1996. I was 13 years old and I was begging my dad all year for one. He kept saying no. Birthday came around, no Saturn. Then it was Christmas of 96 and not a single gift was wrapped in the shape of a video game console box. I knew I wasn't going get it and I was at peace with it. I still had my Genesis to keep my company. Then I get a gift that's in the shape of a shoebox. Maybe it was Airwalks and that would kinda make up for it. I tear it open and it's old pair of shoes my dad use to wear. There was a note that said "put these on and walk to the hall closet". I didn't put them on but I went to the hall closet and there was a wrapped gift in the shape of console box. Could it be what I wanted and begged for all year?? There was a note that said something like "This MEGA gift is out of this world" and my dad kept trying to get me to guess and would say "MEGA... Out of this world...." I was so excited I couldn't respond and I tore that paper off so fast and there it was. My Sega Saturn. Then another gift that I unwrapped and it was the 3 free games with Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighting 2, and Daytona USA. I also got another game called Solar Eclipse. I remember liking that game a lot as a kid, but playing it now... meh haha. Even though I don't have it on video, for as long as I live I will always remember that Christmas and will be grateful towards my dad for making a fun game out of it because he knew how badly I wanted it. You're very lucky your dad recorded a lot of your childhood. I wish I had that.
I just turned 16 by the time it was Christmas of 96, I ended up getting an N64 that following summer June of 97, i wanted a Saturn but 4 player controller ports and lots of little cousins that came over my house all the time made the final decision...1997 was the best summer ever
Yes very lucky. We never had the money for a camcorder (and so my dreams of being a stop motion animator went down the drain). In my whole childhood, there were only two videos of me, recorded by the school. My mum lost one of them, and the other one she left in the cellar to go mouldy and unplayable. Crazy to think how different it is now that everyone has a videocamera in their pocket and can record everything.
You dad is the best. My parents were so bad on drugs I never had anything or went anywhere we barely had food. I live vicariously through your memories
Tyler your dad is the dad we all wanted to have. Unfortunately I grew up without a father and this brings joy to me because I had a good retro gaming life because of my cousins and siblings who bought me games. Your dad is a national treasure. Love your videos man.
So many positive things to say about your videos, but your Dad…wow. Your Dad was a special dude so ahead of his time. Using all of this amazing footage your Dad shot is a fitting tribute to him.
@@MyRetroLife Your also lucky to have a nice camera at the time to so many of them would pick up the tape motor . We just found my aunts tapes from the 1990s I should put some online. I have one were my uncle unboxes a vcr. I was lucky enough to have the jvc sega cd in the 1990s. I kept it.
Man, the patience your dad had to seek these import titles out is amazing. He truly loved you Tyler. I hope you know how special these videos are, of course you do. This series should be in a vault for generations to come, humanity could learn alot from your story telling and how wonderful of a relationship you and your dad had. God I love this channel!!! Out of anyone on UA-cam, you and your dad have changed my mind about the Saturn the most. I was a Sega kid through and through, but we didn't have much money and after my dad got burned on the 32X it was over. And at that point with 3d graphics the PlayStation was cheaper and did it slightly better. What I didn't know about was the awesome 2D games and imports that the Saturn had. Once again I have missed the boat as the Saturn and it's games are too rich for my blood. Great video Tyler.
Yeah, ODEs and emulation is your friend. It’s not 2007 anymore, you don’t need to have the actual physical games to experience these retro systems. I don’t even use my old collection anymore since they take up too much space (and buying new software is a joke). Do a little research and you’ll be set up for life.

Sega Saturn is my second favorite console of all time, first is the SNES. I loved the Saturn, I had so many games for it, the 3D controller, arcade stick, racing wheel, light guns for Virua Cop 1 & 2, Nights christmas sampler, so much more and I freaking sold it all along time ago on ebay for extra cash, kicking myself to this day for it too. Great video, just brought back some bad memories for me but great for you lol.

I really wanted a Saturn when I was a kid, but never ended up getting one since I chose to wait for the N64. It wasn't until I was in college when I finally got a Saturn and I realized I definitely missed out. However it was't until about a decade ago when I discovered the Japanese library and definitely felt like I missed out. It's amazing you got to experience both libraries of games when you were a kid when it was all brand new, truly special. Anytime I see one of your videos about Saturn I eventually dig mine up and play it. Thanks for keeping this forgotten golden age of 2D/semi-2D gaming alive!
I still remember my dad taking me to buy the Sega Saturn when I was 9 or 10 years old. I had Virtual Fighter and WWE in your house game. Great memories. I'm glad I found your channel it reminds me of my dad who passed in 2002. I get to revisit my childhood and memories with my dad
10:56 Love how that neighbour guy comes over and takes a picture of the Saturn shaking his head in disbelieve 😂😊 you gotta love the 90's. Magical time ❤😢
I’ll never stop saying this…thank you thank you for all of these wonderful episodes. Thank you for allowing us to witness your wonderful relationship with your dad and family. ❤❤❤
I love your dads enthusiasm for gaming. When I started collecting the Saturn was the first console I picked up as I wanted to experience the 2D fighting games like Darkstalkers as I knew it was a 2D powerhouse.
Funny Congo was advertised on the back of the box, it ended up being cancelled on the Saturn. Though an almost complete build was leaked a few years ago.
1:48 I will never forget and ALWAYS love this screen. It looked like a CD, totally zoomed in. And it gave me that feeling: From now on, all you get is from CD.
If Sega would of reduced the sticker price by $100, included the original JPN Saturn controller, improved it's 3D Engine to match PS1's, Canned the 'surprise' out of nowhere store launch, brought over more of it's incredible line up of 2D titles from Japan, and maybe kept the original Saturn logo and gold label art work, it may of very well been able to go toe to toe with PS1. Looking back, Astal was the star of the show in my eyes, based on what was released in NA. Unfortunately for me, i never got into importing, and winded up selling my Saturn a few months after PS1 released.
Man I LOVED the Saturn! Even before the launch, I traded in a bunch of old SNES and Genesis games to FuncoLand to earn enough store credit so that I could make sure that I would pick one up on launch day. I had expected to pick it up in September but I was shocked (and delighted) to learn that it came out several months early. That meant that I got an entire Summer vacation to play and enjoy my new Saturn console, which I got along with Clockwork Knight, Bug, Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter, and Panzer Dragoon. I still have my Saturn to this very day and keep it hooked up, though I have since modded it to play games off an SD card. One thing's for sure, from 1995 to 1998 I was team Saturn all the way! Thanks for the awesome video, it was both touching and nostalgic as usual.
11:41 "and if you can't be yourself then who are you?" good quote, you guys were true to the Sega Saturn and Sega themselves and that's great to see. What a find with that Sega Saturn game cabinet too.
I love these videos Tyler! Your dad first and foremost is a legend and what a great father should be providing love, shelter, and presents . I myself loved video games as a child and we celebrated birthday's and Christmas just like you guys! I stumbled on your channel 2 weeks ago and am hooked to it. Keep it going brother!
One of my earliest memories at the age of 3 was a Sega Saturn being brought home. My brothers and I loved our Saturn and played it for years, but didn't know any other kid who owned one
I skipped the Saturn and PS in the first year and thankfully it didn’t take long for both to be under $200! The only time I wasn’t an early adopter and it paid off!
I've been spending a lot of time lately, and I mean too much time, thinking about the past, and what I would give to go back and do it all over again. You are blessed that you're dad recorded so much of your life and time together. Some of my favorite memories are the mid-90s playing my consoles with my friends or just by myself. Now, 25 years+/- later and I'm buying all of the consoles and games I once owned, and for a lot more money. Mostly because I want to go back to that time. Great job keeping your memories alive and sharing them with all of us.
Another great video. I remember reading the book Console Wars and Tom Kalinske fought Sega of Japan against the surprise launch but they made the decisions. They saw the early success of Playstation in Japan and thought they had to do something drastic and launch early in the US. Made a lot of retailers that didn't get early shipments upset with them.
This was my first system. My parents forced me to send away to my poorer cousins once I got n64 (worked all summer for it) and I was pretty unhappy. I wish I still had it. One of my favorite systems and I loved playing Daytona virtua fighter etc. This system captivated my imagination. It had so many add ons and stuff and just looked futuristic and badass. Thanks for sharing, big fan.
Your dad inspired me ❤. I now try to record as much as I can of my kids, 3 and 5 year old doing anything from the mundane to playing awesome retro games with me. From what I have seen of the footage of your dad, he definitely was a great father and someone I aspired to be. He is truly legendary.
In 95 I was 14 and a die hard Sega kid. My parents wouldn’t buy me a sega cd or 32x but came through that Christmas with the Saturn. Absolutely great system to this day
The initial focus on 2d/2.5d has made the Saturn age incredibly well compared to most of its janky polygon peers imo, especially all those awesome arcade ports.
The footage of you playing Metal Slug with your friend really got to me. Makes me think of sleepovers in the 90s playing Genesis co-op games with my buddy. Great memories.
3:37 😂😂😂😂😂 Dude your dad cracked me up here. In this whole video, actually - perfect, wholesome Dad Jokes at their finest. Saturn Steve approved. 👍 👍 😊
My guy, I have no nostalgia for any SEGA consoles, but I'm experiencing deep nostalgic feels seeing your excitement for the Saturn, and especially the Saturn Demo/Arcade unit. THAT would be absolutely wild to have in the house these days (back then too, of course). Grateful for your channel, and that your dad always kept a camera rolling. Bless.
The fact you and your dad were important games back then is awesome. I took love the obscure unknown. We are so alike it's scary. My childhood is similar
Your channel is awesome. Brings me back to my early days of 8-bit and 16-bit (I am most likely 10 years your senior). Seeing your daughters reaction to video games...so nice. I will introduce my young family to Super Mario. Awesome stuff. Really nice touch to incorporate your childhood videos..
I remember I had a really hard time choosing between the Saturn and Playstation consoles. I could only afford one but I remember that being one of the toughest choices I had to make for a generation. Had the Genesis and loved it but ended up going with the Playstation. Twisted Metal and Crash kinda won me over but it wasn't easy. I'd like to add after seeing the Metal Slug segment of your video, my uncle would always buy me one game for my birthday and sometimes before he even left for the night I'd already have beaten the game he bought for me and he'd always get bent out of shape about it. I'd try and tell him I'd play this a million times over, back then games weren't very long at all and were meant to be replayed over and over again but he never got that lol. He'd pick out the hardest games on purpose for me just because they'd last longer. I still remember when he got me Metal Mech on the NES and Shadow of the Ninja, some really tough ones. Remember playing Metal Mech and struggling with it and my dad seen that and he said "It's not hard, you just gotta figure it out" and I sat with him on the couch and he was reading over the instruction manual with me and my mom took a picture. Mom has it in her photo album still. Never forget that.
It's great to see you and your father have something very special! I enjoy it and pretend that's my childhood because I wish to escape. Fatherless, growing up in the ghetto, I didn't get these opportunities, like you did. Very envious but hey at least I can get high and relieve these false memories. From someone escaping reality, thank you from the bottom of my heart! ❤
I accidentally walked into the surprise launch of the Saturn in May of 1995. I was just checking things out at a local Toys R' Us and there it was, the Sega Saturn. I immediately purchased it and while I was checking out, there must have been a Sega rep there, because she had walked up an congratulated me for purchasing the console. It's still one of my favorite consoles.
Starting to watch your videos the other day I thought you were just one of those rich kids who had every game and console... but it turns out, you were just lucky to have a dad who was obsessed with video games!
I was a young kid in the military and wanted this sooo bad. Saga cd was the best I could do with deployments and long days training Thank you for your channel! The nostalgia and videos, especially with your dad are a great watch with my kids. Showing them how far we come From Mario on NES, to Elden Ring and COD. Evolution of our childhood Though we would tire of Mario eventually then jump on bike ramps and off roofs with parachute trash bags; or both at the same time 😂
Your dad is a legend, It's sad he is not in this universe anymore. Maybe in another parallel universe he is a UA-camr just like you. At least you have all this videos to remember him and how great he was. I don't have anything from my father, except bad memories.
I remember getting the Sega Saturn with the 3 pack that came with Daytona USA, Virtua Cop, and Virtua Fighter. My dad also picked up Alien Trilogy and eventually Panzer Dragoon Zweii. What great memories.
I had a Saturn never owned a ps1 , got a N64 later , my dad and had a gamestore in the city that sold Saturn JP imports so this video hits right in the feels. I know exactly how it felt to enjoy incredible Saturn games when it was " officially dead" over here in the West.
The was a great watch, that footage captured and stamped the Saturn period so well. I bought mine on launch [UK] I played it for a short while, then it was put away, I've just very recently discovered it again, thinking I had lost it due to house moves over the last 27 years. I did locate some games a few years back but sold them thinking I had lost the console.... and yes, it fired up at first time of asking... thanks for the video.
I traded in my entire Sega collection at Funcoland for Saturn. That was the only way I could afford it. I never regretted doing that. Saturn was never going to be the headliner, but I didn't mind. I think I enjoyed being part of something different and relished in the fact that my console was so different. Great video. Dad really took you along for the coolest ride. Glad we are all part of it now.
I'm sure it's been said before. I'm sure your dad would have loved being a UA-cam star. Your videos are precious. Not just for your family but for all of us. Amazing! I'd just watch the vid with your cousins in; but couldn't comment on that one.
Thank you 90's Tyler. You just convinced me to pull the trigger on Metal Gear Anthology. Love the channel. Love seeing the old home movies. Takes me right back to that period in time.
Hey, as soon as a new vid is uploaded i'm here!! - I know this is mainly based on your retro "gaming" life but the channel doesn't specifically say so, and I honestly feel you could (should) upload everything from your past. People here just love to see you and your family, all the fun & love that's clearly shown from your mom, dad, dogs etc. I think everyone watching would love to see more of what we already see, it doesn't have to be game related. Don't get me wrong, I love the gaming aspect which is why I found this channel but I've grown to love everything about it! Videos which slightly deviate from gaming when you show longer videos don't remove any love or magic from the video and keep me tuned in. People are now here for you, the young you, your amazing dad and his humor. I honestly think you should share all your footage. It's now almost like watching an episode of "The Goldbergs", meaning the footage could be about anything, we just want to reminisce by seeing the 90's play out through you! The Birthdat eposide shows a large portion of Nurf gun footage which isn't technically gaming but so fun to watch none the less. I'd watch the episode without the gaming aspect.- Great channel, love it. Sporting "My Retro life" sticker in my room :) - Would love to hear what you think?
My cousin Tyler got the Saturn when it came out and I’ll never forget playing virtual cop … I got a Saturn myself about 15 years later for around $33 on Craigslist with some games … I love the Saturn imports .. I would always say if Saturn in America got all the Japanese games then it would have been remembered differently… great video your dad was amazing RIP
Happy New Year Tyler! Thanks for all the vids! We had very similar childhoods with the games.. so seeing Christmas and birthday and all the Nostalgic vids really bring me back and brings a tear to my eye!. It's amazing! And wow do you and your Dad sound alike. Now that you're older you guys have the same voice! He's gotta be so proud of you and how you're bringing this joy all over the world on UA-cam.. and especially because of how you are raising your daughter in the special way that you were raised... ! Have a good one Tyler and thanks again!
i remember seeing of those for the first time in canada when i was 10 years old. the person who owned it was the older brother of the girls i stayed with. saw daytona, virtua vighter, fighting vipers, mortal kombat 2, virtua cop, a bunch of sports games but my all time favorite was the house of the dead. these days any maniac can emulate these systems. the saturn emulator however has come a long way but it still needs optimization to run as intended. all in all, this system will continue to live on.
You were so lucky to have a Dad like that. I wouldn't say I was unlucky of course, I love my father and Im extremely grateful for everything he's ever done for me. But he weren't a Sega Saturn Dad! I never gave up on the Saturn, but sadly when the video games store gave up on the Saturn, I didn't know of any way to import or anything like that. The very idea to me back then was insane.
I still remember 1993 when the Amiga CD32 was launched, Commodore put a huge billboard advert right outside Sega's head office in London. It said 'To be this good will takes SEGA AGES.' lol. I was always a Commodore kid growing up. Had C64 and Amiga. Never owned any games console until the PS4. Believe it or not.
Tyler, I bet you and your Dad were very close. When I was a kid, I usually loved to be around with my Dad as well. He wasn’t a gamer, but he did enjoy watching me play them. Everyday now, I miss him asking me, “Did you beat it?” Those were great memories.
Hey Tylor love your videos. I was born in the 80's and always loved video games, really re-live some of my childhood through your videos. Keep up the awesome work.
Sega Saturn was such a huge hit in Japan with alot of awesome games apparently. One of the reasons why I'd like to start importing games from Japan so many hidden gems.
Tyler this was a spectacular video! It warmed my heart seeing how much you and your Dad loved and appreciated the Sega Saturn! When you showed Metal Slug and started talking about, and then hearing your Dad say "No it's made by SNK. You know SNK Neo Geo." I had a big shit eating grin on my face hearing your Dad say that, and that he knew SNK for their Neo Geo hardware!!! Thank you for uploading these old videos from your childhood!!!

Love this! We loved getting the Saturn early and really just enjoyed it’s entire lifecycle
Keep it going brother!
dude what a special dad, just seemed like such a good dude, hope him and my dad are talkin up there in heaven. The world lost a good man
All these awesome videos just push me to be a better dad to my boy, thank you always for sharing
I got my first Saturn just 4 months ago. Never played it before and there are so many gems for the system!
Dad: kids these days and their video games!
Son: but dad weren't you born in 1984?
Dad: . . . . .
One of my earliest memories at the age of 3 was a Sega Saturn being brought home. My brothers and I loved our Saturn and played it for years, but didn't know any other kid who owned one
I skipped the Saturn and PS in the first year and thankfully it didn’t take long for both to be under $200! The only time I wasn’t an early adopter and it paid off!
what a great dad you have. all that money and bonding time sitting with him playing games on all those consoles.
That was beautiful man. It made me want to order a Saturn right this second lol. Also your dad seems like he was the coolest dude ever.
I miss my Saturn more than all other consoles I had back in the day. That Panzer Dragoon theme still gives me goosebumps.
I loved the raw footage comments from your dad. One of my favorite videos to date!
I love everything about this. Your dad was a treasure, and it’s amazing that you have this footage of him and those times. ✌🏻
Man your dad was hilarious. Bless his heart. A real gamer that one.
Your dad’s commentary had me laughing like nuts throughout the video!
Simply awesome, a Sega kiosk today, the kiosk would definitely be really expensive if you can still find one like that 😁 your father was awesome.
This footage is a piece of history, a proof that you were cool before anyone even thought about it.
I was a huge Sega fan as well. Still am.
I absolutely loved every second of my Saturn.
I love how exited you dad gets to say the features of the console and waits to see your reaction. Amazing man what a great life ❤
Starting to watch your videos the other day I thought you were just one of those rich kids who had every game and console... but it turns out, you were just lucky to have a dad who was obsessed with video games!
I was a young kid in the military and wanted this sooo bad. Saga cd was the best I could do with deployments and long days training
Thank you for your channel! The nostalgia and videos, especially with your dad are a great watch with my kids. Showing them how far we come
From Mario on NES, to Elden Ring and COD. Evolution of our childhood
Though we would tire of Mario eventually then jump on bike ramps and off roofs with parachute trash bags; or both at the same time 😂
Your dad was the man. Still the man in spirit. He reminds me of my old man.
This is so good. Love the Cheap Trick song “Surrender” playing in the background. So much humor and love in this video!! 👏🏻👏🏻🌟
I had a Saturn never owned a ps1 , got a N64 later , my dad and had a gamestore in the city that sold Saturn JP imports so this video hits right in the feels. I know exactly how it felt to enjoy incredible Saturn games when it was " officially dead" over here in the West.
Hahahaha, you can hear it in your dad's voice when he says "Tyler, I searched for it..... for MONTHS!" What a #Saint
I love your dads passion about video games in your videos ! He was way ahead of his time for his generation of boomers .
Dude your Dad is kinda hilarious and clearly a good guy, what great Dad!
Honestly, you just cant understand unless you was there at the time.. having arcade games at home was another feeling man.
Amazing how ahead of the time your dad was, watching his introduction to the Saturn is like watching any modern UA-cam vid.
Your dad had impeccable taste
"These are the games yet to come, so far only 6 have came but these are the ones still yet to come"
Always love that line
Metal Slug on the Saturn was so classic. The Saturn dude the most underrated of the old consoles
i remember seeing of those for the first time in canada when i was 10 years old. the person who owned it was the older brother of the girls i stayed with. saw daytona, virtua vighter, fighting vipers, mortal kombat 2, virtua cop, a bunch of sports games but my all time favorite was the house of the dead. these days any maniac can emulate these systems. the saturn emulator however has come a long way but it still needs optimization to run as intended. all in all, this system will continue to live on.
Hearing cheap trick in the background was super cool, awsome home footage!
They were Dad's favorite band and often found there way into the background of home videos!
I swear whenever Im feeling down, a new video is always here to bring me back up! Thanks for the smiles!
Tyler, I bet you and your Dad were very close. When I was a kid, I usually loved to be around with my Dad as well. He wasn’t a gamer, but he did enjoy watching me play them. Everyday now, I miss him asking me, “Did you beat it?” Those were great memories.
I'll say your dad was way ahead of his time getting Japanese imports. So awesome
Hey Tylor love your videos. I was born in the 80's and always loved video games, really re-live some of my childhood through your videos. Keep up the awesome work.
Hey, thanks! Glad you like them!
4:09 Your father's dad jokes were cracking me up haha Great video, thanks for sharing another fantastic memory
