Hey guys, this is my first video of 2023. If you missed my last video of 2022, "My Top 10 Favorite Video Games", check it out here - ua-cam.com/video/tktzXdVdRQo/v-deo.html Thanks for watching. I hope y'all have a great day!
Man, the patience your dad had to seek these import titles out is amazing. He truly loved you Tyler. I hope you know how special these videos are, of course you do. This series should be in a vault for generations to come, humanity could learn alot from your story telling and how wonderful of a relationship you and your dad had. God I love this channel!!! THE POWER EDGE!!!
You dad is the best. My parents were so bad on drugs I never had anything or went anywhere we barely had food. I live vicariously through your memories
So many positive things to say about your videos, but your Dad…wow. Your Dad was a special dude so ahead of his time. Using all of this amazing footage your Dad shot is a fitting tribute to him.
1996. I was 13 years old and I was begging my dad all year for one. He kept saying no. Birthday came around, no Saturn. Then it was Christmas of 96 and not a single gift was wrapped in the shape of a video game console box. I knew I wasn't going get it and I was at peace with it. I still had my Genesis to keep my company. Then I get a gift that's in the shape of a shoebox. Maybe it was Airwalks and that would kinda make up for it. I tear it open and it's old pair of shoes my dad use to wear. There was a note that said "put these on and walk to the hall closet". I didn't put them on but I went to the hall closet and there was a wrapped gift in the shape of console box. Could it be what I wanted and begged for all year?? There was a note that said something like "This MEGA gift is out of this world" and my dad kept trying to get me to guess and would say "MEGA... Out of this world...." I was so excited I couldn't respond and I tore that paper off so fast and there it was. My Sega Saturn. Then another gift that I unwrapped and it was the 3 free games with Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighting 2, and Daytona USA. I also got another game called Solar Eclipse. I remember liking that game a lot as a kid, but playing it now... meh haha. Even though I don't have it on video, for as long as I live I will always remember that Christmas and will be grateful towards my dad for making a fun game out of it because he knew how badly I wanted it. You're very lucky your dad recorded a lot of your childhood. I wish I had that.
I just turned 16 by the time it was Christmas of 96, I ended up getting an N64 that following summer June of 97, i wanted a Saturn but 4 player controller ports and lots of little cousins that came over my house all the time made the final decision...1997 was the best summer ever
Yes very lucky. We never had the money for a camcorder (and so my dreams of being a stop motion animator went down the drain). In my whole childhood, there were only two videos of me, recorded by the school. My mum lost one of them, and the other one she left in the cellar to go mouldy and unplayable. Crazy to think how different it is now that everyone has a videocamera in their pocket and can record everything.
Tyler your dad is the dad we all wanted to have. Unfortunately I grew up without a father and this brings joy to me because I had a good retro gaming life because of my cousins and siblings who bought me games. Your dad is a national treasure. Love your videos man.
Your dad was so awesome. What truly makes a father happy is making their child happy. He knew that we all grow up and life hits hard so he made sure to make your childhood care free and filled with fun
I really wanted a Saturn when I was a kid, but never ended up getting one since I chose to wait for the N64. It wasn't until I was in college when I finally got a Saturn and I realized I definitely missed out. However it was't until about a decade ago when I discovered the Japanese library and definitely felt like I missed out. It's amazing you got to experience both libraries of games when you were a kid when it was all brand new, truly special. Anytime I see one of your videos about Saturn I eventually dig mine up and play it. Thanks for keeping this forgotten golden age of 2D/semi-2D gaming alive!
I’ll never stop saying this…thank you thank you for all of these wonderful episodes. Thank you for allowing us to witness your wonderful relationship with your dad and family. ❤❤❤
One of my earliest memories at the age of 3 was a Sega Saturn being brought home. My brothers and I loved our Saturn and played it for years, but didn't know any other kid who owned one
The footage of you playing Metal Slug with your friend really got to me. Makes me think of sleepovers in the 90s playing Genesis co-op games with my buddy. Great memories.
My guy, I have no nostalgia for any SEGA consoles, but I'm experiencing deep nostalgic feels seeing your excitement for the Saturn, and especially the Saturn Demo/Arcade unit. THAT would be absolutely wild to have in the house these days (back then too, of course). Grateful for your channel, and that your dad always kept a camera rolling. Bless.
This was my first system. My parents forced me to send away to my poorer cousins once I got n64 (worked all summer for it) and I was pretty unhappy. I wish I still had it. One of my favorite systems and I loved playing Daytona virtua fighter etc. This system captivated my imagination. It had so many add ons and stuff and just looked futuristic and badass. Thanks for sharing, big fan.
Another great video. I remember reading the book Console Wars and Tom Kalinske fought Sega of Japan against the surprise launch but they made the decisions. They saw the early success of Playstation in Japan and thought they had to do something drastic and launch early in the US. Made a lot of retailers that didn't get early shipments upset with them.
The fact you and your dad were important games back then is awesome. I took love the obscure unknown. We are so alike it's scary. My childhood is similar
It's great to see you and your father have something very special! I enjoy it and pretend that's my childhood because I wish to escape. Fatherless, growing up in the ghetto, I didn't get these opportunities, like you did. Very envious but hey at least I can get high and relieve these false memories. From someone escaping reality, thank you from the bottom of my heart! ❤
Your channel is awesome. Brings me back to my early days of 8-bit and 16-bit (I am most likely 10 years your senior). Seeing your daughters reaction to video games...so nice. I will introduce my young family to Super Mario. Awesome stuff. Really nice touch to incorporate your childhood videos..
3:37 😂😂😂😂😂 Dude your dad cracked me up here. In this whole video, actually - perfect, wholesome Dad Jokes at their finest. Saturn Steve approved. 👍 👍 😊
I had a Saturn never owned a ps1 , got a N64 later , my dad and had a gamestore in the city that sold Saturn JP imports so this video hits right in the feels. I know exactly how it felt to enjoy incredible Saturn games when it was " officially dead" over here in the West.
It’s unbelievable that your dad managed to import so many Japanese games. I can’t even imagine how expensive and rare they would be back then. It must be the greatest feeling in the world to play some games months before the US release. I remember when Kingdom Hearts 1.5HD released on PS3 it inspired me to learn Japanese. Prior to that release, it was a region locked exclusive in Japan.
1:48 I will never forget and ALWAYS love this screen. It looked like a CD, totally zoomed in. And it gave me that feeling: From now on, all you get is from CD.
When everyone else in Junior High had Playstation, N64, or Dreamcast, Me and one other person had Saturn. I played so much Virtua Cop 2, I knew where the enemies would appear before they were on screen.
Happy New Year Tyler! Thanks for all the vids! We had very similar childhoods with the games.. so seeing Christmas and birthday and all the Nostalgic vids really bring me back and brings a tear to my eye!. It's amazing! And wow do you and your Dad sound alike. Now that you're older you guys have the same voice! He's gotta be so proud of you and how you're bringing this joy all over the world on UA-cam.. and especially because of how you are raising your daughter in the special way that you were raised... ! Have a good one Tyler and thanks again!
Tyler this was a spectacular video! It warmed my heart seeing how much you and your Dad loved and appreciated the Sega Saturn! When you showed Metal Slug and started talking about, and then hearing your Dad say "No it's made by SNK. You know SNK Neo Geo." I had a big shit eating grin on my face hearing your Dad say that, and that he knew SNK for their Neo Geo hardware!!! Thank you for uploading these old videos from your childhood!!!
I had an old 12 game arcade machine i got at maybe 10. Had Frogger, Asteroids and a couple weird ones like video poker. My dad left it in the rain when he was cleaning the garage😢. Thats why i made it my life goal to get arcade cabs as an adult
I traded in my entire Sega collection at Funcoland for Saturn. That was the only way I could afford it. I never regretted doing that. Saturn was never going to be the headliner, but I didn't mind. I think I enjoyed being part of something different and relished in the fact that my console was so different. Great video. Dad really took you along for the coolest ride. Glad we are all part of it now.
Great video! Thanks for sharing. I always wanted a Saturn. I had a PlayStation growing up but decided to get a white Japanese Saturn a few years ago. My favorite games for it are X-Men vs Street Fighter, Gunbird, and Assault Suit Leynos 2 (which is super underrated and so much fun).
I accidentally walked into the surprise launch of the Saturn in May of 1995. I was just checking things out at a local Toys R' Us and there it was, the Sega Saturn. I immediately purchased it and while I was checking out, there must have been a Sega rep there, because she had walked up an congratulated me for purchasing the console. It's still one of my favorite consoles.
Wish I lived on your block growing up. My family didn’t have the money whenever a new console came out, but I did whatever I had to do to get my next system. I got the PS1 N64 and the Dreamcast when they launched before any of my friends did, so I too was kinda a big deal.
Thanks for this Tyler. I never knew the imports they had... definitely would have been interested. After PS1 hit and i got hooked on 3D gaming though, with games like Twisted metal, Tekken 2, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider idk if i would have had any interest for years later. But now, looking back. Yeah it definitely would have blown me away to have those JP imports and Metal Slug. Shoot, Metal Slug alone might have justified the $400 + price tag with how much i would have replayed it. Great episode as usual.
As we look back at Virtua Fighter, the graphics are pretty bad, but like you said it was ground breaking back then. I remember working at toy r us and unloading the truck and seeing these sega boxes. After opening up and seeing the Saturn I was so excited and surprised! At that time the internet was nowhere’s near to what it is today so all I can tell was my friends.
Awesome Saturn arcade! I wonder what your dad would think of some of the graphics of modern consoles, I can feel how passionate he was about gaming and spending time with his family. God bless Tyler, thanks for sharing.
Huge Sega fan but PlayStation 1 was the first non sega system I purchased. Never went back to purchase the Saturn yet though. Still plan on picking one up with a handful of games one day just to complete my sega console collection. You and your dad had very good taste back then. I find out about a lot of this stuff now but it would been amazing to be excited about 3 Wonders and Cotton Boomerang in the 90s!
Every time I watch a UA-cam video that refers to SEGA Saturn's 3D prowess, and a person says that the 3D ability was thrown in at the last minute, it makes me sick. I also hate how people blame those "last minute" additions as part of the reason the Saturn was hard to program for due to a complex board of chips. SEGA ALWAYS wanted the Saturn to be a 2D/3D powerhouse. Most of the tech SEGA was banking on was responsible for their arcade legacy: Virtua Fighter, Virtual Racer, Virtua Cop, and other AM1/AM2 games. SEGA wanted the 2D powerhouse ability to finally do justice to the awesome arcade legacy as SEGA AGES was definitely already in mind to show off great home versions of SEGA's super scalers. I like your channel. I'll be watching.
One of the best systems for imports, I have a lot of Japanese games for it. If I could play them during the original release I think I would have dug it more back then. We all had Playstation, I only heard of one person locally having a Saturn and I never even played it until many many years later after it was discontinued.
At that time I was still rocking the snes. I wanted the Saturn so bad that I played the McDonald’s monopoly anytime I could because one of the top prize was the Saturn. Unfortunately I did not win, but though eventually was able to get one. Forgot how I was able to acquire a used one that came with vf2, Virtua cop 2, fighting viper, Sega rally, Daytona USA and Die hard the arcade game. Sadly I traded it all for credit towards an N64.
The Saturn was cool, and had a ton of great Japanese games, but back then (in my area anyway) the cost of importing titles was prohibitively expensive - just one imported game from Japan would easily cost as much as 2 normal games off the shelf.
the saturn was very unique. if the japanese library was made more available and a true sonic game came out, it would've done better--i still have my saturn to this day
I never thought about the Saturn being designed for 2d. The change to 3d kinda put me off gaming for a while and I’m still kinda split. I feel like my gaming is always retro, which for me is almost always 2d or current which usually isn’t. I need to dive into the Saturn lineup deeper. I’ve played the most popular games but I’ve never dug deep.
I bought a Sega Saturn because of the Original released vid. I had to mod the power due to faulty parts but looking to do the FRAM MOD as a battery will not do it. But Japan really did have a fantasgreat library. 👌🏻
Hi Tyler. I see your a fan off metal slug, great game by the way. Have you ever played demon front, it's a great clone of metal slug. I only resently discovered this game through mu daughter who knows I love retro games. All the best 2 u and family in 2023. I'll look forward to seeing more off your stuff. ✌️✌️Peace from England 🏴.
i always wanted a nintendo kiosk or playchoice 10 machine. u still have that sega saturn kiosk? my only fond sega memories were the genesis and also sega arcade games. i moved from N64 to pc gaming really quick but came back to consoles by 2009. i never had saturn or 32x or dreamcast. in a way im glad my last sega memories were genesis and sega cd. thats kinda where i like to leave it. i still cant believe my mom saved up and bought the sega cd for me in 1992. what was it.. $300? we had a camcorder back then and i cant believe i didnt record MY gaming moments.
Never owned a Saturn, but I always thought it was interesting and a shame it never really caught on outside of Japan. Don't know how much the console or any of the games, especially Japanese ones, cost nowadays.

I just flip over in bed
Sega Saturn is my favorite console of all time. i hope you enjoy the rest of your day. happy gaming.😁😁😁😁😁
I love dreamcast and i love your dad and cousins and you bud. ;). ps we're the same age tyler.
Your dads a boss!
Nice, I have been watching all your vids. This gives me major flashbacks.

dude your dad was so awesome. can never get enough of him!
He was a UA-camr even before Google came into existence . Even his mannerisms and the way he talks so cool
Your dad was so awesome. What truly makes a father happy is making their child happy. He knew that we all grow up and life hits hard so he made sure to make your childhood care free and filled with fun
I had a Saturn for X-Men vs. Streetfighter and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Streetfighter. The Saturn slapped hard.
I really wanted a Saturn when I was a kid, but never ended up getting one since I chose to wait for the N64. Bro your pops straight fire with the commentary. He was a UA-camr before there was even the internet. Shout out to your pops Tyler. Love the content
Nothing beats the old days. Miss'em every day.
When the world was still real.
@@thaistomp For sure.

This is so good. Love the Cheap Trick song “Surrender” playing in the background. So much humor and love in this video!! 👏🏻👏🏻🌟
Dude your Dad is kinda hilarious and clearly a good guy, what great Dad!
3:37 😂😂😂😂😂 Dude your dad cracked me up here. In this whole video, actually - perfect, wholesome Dad Jokes at their finest. Saturn Steve approved. 👍 👍 😊

I love your dads passion about video games in your videos ! He was way ahead of his time for his generation of boomers .
Your relationship with your dad is a f\/cking dream, man.
I had an old 12 game arcade machine i got at maybe 10. Had Frogger, Asteroids and a couple weird ones like video poker. My dad left it in the rain when he was cleaning the garage😢. Thats why i made it my life goal to get arcade cabs as an adult

Wow! You were playing Japanese games back in the day. Lucky kid!😊
Dad: kids these days and their video games!
Son: but dad weren't you born in 1984?
Dad: . . . . .
Yeah I played and loved all the Metal Slugs. One of my favorite series of games ever developed.
"Arcade Game Theater". I Love the 90s.
I'm a SEGA kid, I love SEGA, completely agree, SEGA Saturn is underrated
I was legit playing Metal Slug X a few days ago. Amazing fun games that still hold up in today's world.
I still can't believe you only have less than 80 thousand subs dude, it's so wrong, and your dad was way ahead of his time
You always seemed to have envious and grumpy "friends" around. LOL
Pocket Fighter is an awesome game on the Saturn. Honestly one of my favorite games for the system.
Thanks for sharing this memory
These vids are awesome.
All the memories you have of your dad and your childhood are
Priceless.
Great episode as usual.
I got my Saturn Christmas 95 and played the hell out of it. I got a ps1 in 97 and the rest is history
The Dad jokes. Priceless man.
your dad is so goofy and funny I love it!
Cotton series is one of the most underrated unknowns in the US.
As we look back at Virtua Fighter, the graphics are pretty bad, but like you said it was ground breaking back then. I remember working at toy r us and unloading the truck and seeing these sega boxes.
You're so lucky to have a dad as cool as that. My family were luddites in comparison
Your dad was awesome
That arcade cabinet is actually a kiosk.
Every time I watch a UA-cam video that refers to SEGA Saturn's 3D prowess, and a person says that the 3D ability was thrown in at the last minute, it makes me sick.

I never had the Sega Saturn but it's pretty nostalgic!
That's pretty good beating Metal Slug at that age the day you got it.
Bro! Your dad was the best!
"How nice of them for four hundred dollars" 😂
I was 10 years old at this point and I passed on segas's consoles. Always went with Playstation.
I couldn’t imagine getting this before it was cool to get this.
Loving this channel.
Yeah, I bought a Saturn long before I got a Playstation. But I had a Genesis long before the SNES. I also got a Jaguar and a 3DO.
Tyler, it’s really impressive how you played all those Japanese imports. Again, your Dad was awesome. Wondering, do keep your video game chops up?
‘Designed for 2D’? It’s quite well documented that it’s designed for both decent 2D and 3D.
"Head for Saturn"
Is.. is that an offer?
The Saturn was cool, and had a ton of great Japanese games, but back then (in my area anyway) the cost of importing titles was prohibitively expensive - just one imported game from Japan would easily cost as much as 2 normal games off the shelf.
this video is nice. very nostalgic feeling
the saturn was very unique. if the japanese library was made more available and a true sonic game came out, it would've done better--i still have my saturn to this day
your dad was a wonderful man :)
Your pops was so damn funny man!
Love me some Retro Life uploads. But why was your dad talking like that xD
Thanks! That was his fun “TV Show Host” / Cheesy Announcer voice. He did it to be funny and for my cousins and I who would watch these tapes
I bought a Sega Saturn because of the Original released vid. I had to mod the power due to faulty parts but looking to do the FRAM MOD as a battery will not do it. But Japan really did have a fantasgreat library. 👌🏻
One of the best channels on UA-cam 🤘🏼
I was just thinking about if u made a video about the sega saturn today lol
Unbelievble release
My dad wasn’t a yuppie, so mine didn’t even play video games beyond Atari.
Your Dad is a good man
Your Dad was UA-cam before UA-cam. Very cool review and you guys had them all. But did you….Neo Geo?? Thanks
We used to have a Sega Saturn back in the days i remember having Daytona USA virtual cop x men children of the atom nights college slam darkstarkers
another great video - and that iMac shirt!! holy sh*t!
i always wanted a nintendo kiosk or playchoice 10 machine. u still have that sega saturn kiosk?
my only fond sega memories were the genesis and also sega arcade games. i moved from N64 to pc gaming really quick but came back to consoles by 2009. i never had saturn or 32x or dreamcast. in a way im glad my last sega memories were genesis and sega cd. thats kinda where i like to leave it. i still cant believe my mom saved up and bought the sega cd for me in 1992. what was it.. $300? we had a camcorder back then and i cant believe i didnt record MY gaming moments.
I’d put 5 dollars you’re dad didn’t see Congo (the movie) yet!😂
I need that saturn kiosk
How did you play Japanese games on a NA Saturn? Was there adapters back then ?
And awesome vid, I want to get one now when I go back to Asia .
Marvelous
I could never get the Saturn to work.
Never owned a Saturn, but I always thought it was interesting and a shame it never really caught on outside of Japan. Don't know how much the console or any of the games, especially Japanese ones, cost nowadays.
