      can u please tell me, where i can get the foam, that u used to modify the 1990 pro to cool down the highs?
      and does this modification actually do a great job of getting rid of the the spike at the highs in the frequency response curve, according to u?

    DT1990 Pro always beat the rest of my headphone sets by far, including LCD2C - Beyerdynamic T1 2nd Gen - Sennheiser HD660S - B&W P7 & P9 Signature and Focal Clear which allegedly its a superior model to Focal Elex/Elear. No matter what model I'm using I always end-up returning to the 1990's because of the sound.
    They're not perfect as you said, but they sound magical and very musical to my ears. I also put some foam to avoid sibilance on some tracks and some grainyness on some bright recordings. Other than that they're utterly perfect for me.
    I wish Beyerdynamic would made a DT1990 Pro Special Edition with a Y cable (also hate headsets with single cables) a more comfortable headband and some minor sound improvements as we're entering in 2019. Or maybe a T1 3rd Gen inspired on the DT1990's? I was happy with T1 2nd gen until I bought the DT1990's which allegedly are lesser model.
    Hi-Fi High End world its weird ...

      I talked to a technician at Beyerdynamic here in Germany about the comparison of the DT 1990 PRO (which I own) with the T1 2nd Edition. He told me some things about both of them in comparison to each other and here I want to mention that he told me that even the T1 2nd Edition is the more expensive headphone it is not that extremely more detailed as the price is differing between both headphone models. Also the T1 (even if it is a very detailed headphone) is not showing all kinds of detail. If there are any mistakes in mixing, small popping-sounds through cutting mistakes or or other things like that, the T1 is hiding them more for enoying the music and not to be focused to much on mistakes. The DT 1990 would show these nistakes more clearly. And the reason why write this commentary is: The guy from eyerdynamic told me that the Telsla driver that is build in the DT 1990 is more evolved that the driver in the T1. But The driver in the T1 is build in slanted in the cups for there is a better listening difference for sounds coming from slightly behind. I like that on the T1, but overall the T1 sounds too boring and unobtrusive/reserved to me. Also the soundscape is too wide for my taste to the left and right. Some instruments sound to far way. When you imagine, that with the DT 1990 you sit inside a bubble and enjoy music, all the music and instruments arestill inside the bubble. But to me it "felt" like some sounds/frequencies/instruments are played from the outside the bubble. So it felt to me like I wanted to get these parts from the outside to the inside of the bubble. That feeling distracted me overall from listening to music (I listened to the T1 2nd Gen. at Beyerdynamic in Gemany directly in their showroom at the moment I already owned the DT 1990 for some weeks.) I like the DT 1990 much more, because the sounds there a catchier/punchier to the ear in comparion to the T1. But depending on someones listending behavoir on the other hand the DT 1990 is not recommended for relaxed listening (where the T1 is more recommended). If I listen to music, the DT 1999 (which I really like) is consuming almost all of my awareness the "headphone wants to have". I can barely do two things at once. I can either do something actively on the PC, but I feel myself disturbed by the headphones music then. Most of the time I have to choose between work on the PC without music from the headphone or completely focusing on music and the fantastic detail the DT 1990 offers. :-)

    The DT1990 is currently my best and favorite headphone, with the next one being the K712. I use the analytical pads and some slight EQ. I use a FiiO X5II into an EL DAC/Atom combo at home via coax and a Chord Mojo for portable. Only EQ adjustment I make is dropping the 8k slider down by about 3.5db to tame the peak some and it's perfect.

    I'd LOVE if you included such an imaging drawing for every phone you review, and also explain a little how they would fare in a gaming situation.
    I recently tested all my cans for imaging, especially between directly forward and 90° to either side where the DT1990 seem to be less great, and the race was between ATH-AD 700x and Hifiman HE-4XX and IMO the Hifiman perform better in that critical diagonal area which us why they're my Go-To for CoD Black Out 4 atm.

I'm looking for a great competitive gaming headphone and was considering the T1, but I think you've convinced me to go with the 1990. I wasn't really happy with the sound of the DT 1990 Pro as I'm looking for more of a "fun" headphone. However with the Dekoni Elite pads these sound so much better. The low end is louder and has a satisfying rumble that you can really feel.
    Also I noticed in your review you mentioned these only have around 100 dB SPL, which is a spec I couldn't find before. That would explain why they are distorting lol... I like to listen music around 120 dB. I think a planar headphone might be better for my preferences. I'm considering Fostex T20RP with 1840 Shure pads. The T20RP MKIII have more bass than the T40 or T50 and pretty good midrange/treble. (Ideally I'd like Argons but I'm not willing to wait 14+ weeks to get them.) Hopefully my Topping A90 amp can drive them loud enough (110+ dB).

    I can see how you speak out in favour of the soundstage and imaging of the 1990 because it has better separation and instruments are better wider positioned left / right in the soundstage. But I feel that you're missing one point here. Audio tracks aren't mastered for your taste / flavour of listening, and definitely not in the first place for headphone listening. What if the audio engineer really meant to put certain instrument in the 45 degree angle left and right off centre in the soundstage? That would mean that the DT-1990 can not reproduce that mix as well as the ELEX can. A good mix is more than just left and right for instruments and vocals (forward) in the centre. I think it is a bad habit that has been creeping up on people who listen too much on headphones and not often enough (or regularly) to a good pair of speakers that image well.

    Just got the 1990s so thanks for your review and head to head. Can you talk or do a video on the foam mod (how to do it) v analytical v balanced v Dekoni pads. And describe the sound between each?

    • @orionxavier6957
      @orionxavier6957 4 роки тому

      I'm guessing the foam mod just smooths the treble a little. Since people complain these headphones are "too bright." I don't feel fatigue or pain from their treble, just hear more detail from it. And female vocals are more pleasing to the ear.
      Analytical pads are like a 4" midrange/1" tweeter set. Very anemic with bass, but very good midrange and treble.
      Balanced pads are like a 6.5" midbass/1" tweeter set, like a typical desktop speaker set. Great bass impact around 90 Hz+ (drums, etc.) but sub-bass is lacking.
      Dekoni Elite pads are like just keeping everything the same but adding a 12" subwoofer. 😄
      The balanced pads aren't tuned properly for strong low end. For example BASEMENT JAXX - Something About You, there's bass impact around 30 Hz, but the tesla drivers just make a sudden "PUH!" sound. Because all you hear is the drivers moving abruptly and noise produced, instead of a TUNED low end sound produced. That's what you get with the Dekoni Elite pads, they're tuned to give you the FULL audio experience.
      Of course these are "studio" headphones though so you can't expect them to get super loud with sub-bass, like DJ headphones can or "fun" headphones like Fostex.
      But I would say as someone who is somewhere between "basshead" and audiophile, the DT 1990 Pro with Dekoni Elite pads are very satisfactory for listening to music and movies. I know there's room for improvement though in sub-bass and with SPL, which is why I'm still looking for my "endgame" headphones (without spending over $3K). But if I had to settle on these headphones with the upgraded pads, I'd be very content.

      Not sure if this will help at all, but I have the elex and audio technica a990z(also had the a900 before them), both closed back on the ATs. For gaming, I don't think the elex is a step up for positional sound or enjoyment (depending on the game). For music it's no contest though, the elex is much better. The audio technica's are really good for gaming. I do prefer the closed back versions though (for gaming).

    2 important aspects missing from your reviews is 1. Price. DT1990 is much cheaper than the Elex (500$ vs 700$) and 2. The Elex can be run balanced, DT1990 is only SE. I personally pick the DT1990 because they are good at everything and is more useful in my studio environment (for music creation) but I’m sure the Elex in balanced mode would be pretty special.

    • @muna5066
      @muna5066 5 років тому

      He mentioned both of those things... 1) he said that the Elex has balanced and the DT1990 doesn't. That's why he used single ended for both. Said that in the beginning. 2) Also he mentioned that the Elex costs more when he said "it wouldn't be THAT much more of a step up in price to go to the Elex" it was $580 vs $700 at the time of this video so he was right and they were in the same price class. Now that the 1990 is down to 520, the gap is widening a bit more.

    Hd 58x, hd 6xx or He4xx for mainly gaming but also listening to music a ton. Wich one would you recommend guys?

    • @PhantomGett
      @PhantomGett 5 років тому +1

      TL;DR - I recommend the 58X personally. Reasoning below.
      The 6XX and 58X are pretty similar for soundstage imo. The 4XX is quite a bit wider, especially balanced. I liked my 6XX and I like my 600's as well, but I'd probably say the 58X for gaming, because of it's brighter signature and just-wide-enough soundstage?
      The 4XX was alright for gaming, but honestly I didn't like the comfort compared to the senns and I, personally didn't like the 4XX soundstage for gaming.
      For music? My personal preference is for either of the Senns. The 6XX will scale better with higher-end upstream gear, but I beat on my 58X and used them as my daily drivers (mixed use) until I donated them to my mother for this Xmas (tomorrow).
      Especially if it's your first headphone and you don't wanna make a huge investment, I'd say go for the 58X, spend some time with it, and then maybe borrow the 6XX and or 4XX to see if you like them.
      But that's my personal opinion and experiences. Your ears and preferences may well be different from mine, so I generally recommend trying things for yourself if you're interested in them.
      The 58X is a low-cost, low-risk intro to Sennheisers, that is competent for music and games. Intimate/Accurate Soundstage.
      The 6XX is an HD 650. It's great for music and competant for gaming. The comparatively darker sound signature (less treble) to the 58X can make it less enjoyable for gaming. Intimate/Accurate soundstage.
      The 4XX is, to my ears, brighter than either of them, but just as bassy. But it's wider soundstage makes it somewhat less accurate in the imaging department. Again, to my ears.

    • @DatHombre
      @DatHombre 5 років тому

      I have the HD58X and 6XX and think the 6XX sounds better on like 90% of the music I put through it (not just acoustic/vocal centric stuff like a lot of reviewers say they're best for, there was a lot of exciting music they were better for too ime). While there are certain things I like about the 58X (more oomph to the bass) it always feels like it's missing ~7% of the detail to my ears (emphasis on *my* ears) and the treble always feels sorta.. Muffled, I don't know. It's really subtle and I get why everyone likes them so much, but I think the 6XX definitely has some clarity that's missing from the 58X.
      Buttt with all that said, you'd did say primarily for gaming- the 58X's really do have fairly noticeably better imagining (Pausing where I was in god of war and switching headphones immediately showed this because rather than hearing a voice next to me, I could hear a voice to my right. I wasn't purposefully even trying to check for imagining here either, it just hit me right when I unpaused it)
      So all in all, I'd say to get the 58X's and invest in an amp/dac. (or 4xx as I have no experience with those)
