Railway are built for the least expensive solution, for the problem experienced for the route required, to provide a service in the restriction of the landscape.

We end up in Lauterbrunnen , and there were indicator signs at that station for Interlaken and Jungfrau.

Centre rail is a rack on to which a gear on the loco engages to drive at large percentage inclines. It also acts as a braking element down hill.
@@briancooper562 I wonder why this (mix of normal track & rack railway) is not used at many other places! It could save many detours.
