The bear crearly wanted to take him from a high ground, that's he's always eager to climb the closest tree, omnivorous hunters are very opportunistic and won't act unless they're sure they have advantage.
But camera man never dies !
“Hey bear” is the first phrase bears learn when studying the English language
Pretty sure the bear followed him because he kept saying "hey bear". Bear was all like "yeah what's up"?
Right, like why is he talking?
Yeah I dont think you’re supposed to say hey bear in a soothing manner. Less Bob Ross and more Rick Ross.

I'm sure that was an English speaking bear .
He was baiting the bear, i don't think the bear was in attack mode at all. It was simply a way to make a video and sell a product
Having the camera out to make the bear accountable was definitely the wise thing to do.

He was baiting the bear just to spray him. Who talks quietly to a bear? Being loud dosent attract them to you.
@@anythingpipes3722you don’t yell at a bear if it’s right in front of you. They’ll take it as a threat and most likely attack. Sure if you’re walking in the woods and haven’t encountered one yeah make noise to keep them away. This isn’t that situation.
@BrentChaye who told you that? Grizzly man?

I was intrigued to watch how the Bear was closing down the distance between it and the man. Very subtly 8-10 inches with each
step. Very clever, intelligent stalking. No question the Bear was timing it's attack. Each tree it climbed was 2-3 feet closer to the
man than the last. Nothing the Bear did was by accident.
“Hey bear” is to avoid startling a bear. But when a bear sees you and is following you, you’re waaaayyyyy beyond hey bear.
Bears don't understand English or any other language. Doesn't matter what you say to him, might as well just speak gibberish
@simonthoben189 his tone was probably more of a problem. He is talking to it in a calm, soothing tone. He should be yelling and shouting at it and waving his arms

I worked at the local Cabela's a few years ago. Had a lady call me asking how much bear spray she needed to use on her kids to keep them safe running through the woods.

I had a similar problem on Eglin AFB in 1990. Was walking backward just the same as this guy. Just didn’t have bear spray; only a 12 ga. shotgun. After walking like that for about 1/4 mile, I was beginning to get worried about dark setting in. I still had about 1.5 miles to go to get to my truck to drive out. I decided to stand my ground and try to yell and warn it off. It never left and got closer… I shot the rabbit three times before I felt safe. Never underestimate the danger presented by those cute ears and tail.
Last rabbit I saw @ hunting season. I called out to my cousin because there's no way a rabbit is worth cleaning to eat!
The whole family joined in pointing it out and got my cousin his 1st rabbit. Also his last, smart man!

No one lives through an encounter with the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog. I call this story a fake.
@dammitdan, you would be correct, but this was the swamp rabbit that attacked Jimmy Carter. Not the one you mention. Everyone knows the swamp rabbit isn’t as tough.
Each time the bear trotted towards this guy it was getting closer and closer. That bear wasn't playing, he was getting ready for dinner.
Clearly bears need to get together and ban all assault sprays. They could also put up signs entering any forest that say "Bear spray free zone"...that would help.

I think an indispensable skill in woods-craft is to be able to "read" animals' behavior...to be able to discern what they are thinking when a human/animal encounter occurs. My interpretation of this encounter is that the man did well to back up slowly in order to show the bear he himself had no aggressive intentions. However, after 50 feet of that approach, it became evident he had convinced the bear he had no evil intentions, that the bear was not in the least intimidated by him, and that now the bear was going to see how much he could impose himself on the man. When an animal develops that mindset, further retreat only reinforces further imposition by the animal. Now the animal begins to interpret further retreat as increasing fear in the man, which results in escalating aggression by the animal. I would have taken a stand at about the 50--75 foot mark and shown the bear that I am not helpless...that I have defensive weapons that can make him regret his aggression. This is, in fact, how it turned out anyway. But...had the guy waited too long, and the bear done a full out charge, it might have been too late. After all, how far can you walk backwards through woods without tripping...and triggering a charge?

You do want to back away slowly. DO NOT RUN!!!!!
@@rsvpevents6780
He didn’t say anything about running away. The problem was he was being far to calm and gentle. If you encounter a black bear you want to get as big as you can and take a loud aggressive tone to scare it off.
Make yourself look big and raise your arms and be very aggressive and loud
could have sprayed in the air long ago to send the message
He did the right thing, if it didn’t back off then that’s just the bears fault and would have to taste the bear spray. You should really only attempt to scare it away if you aren’t armed.
The way the bear can run up a tree like a squirrel is scary.
So really no chance of escape if you're unarmed.
They can also swim up to 6 mph, we can't.

He was unarmed
I had to shoot a Grizzly in the head with 00 Buckshot in Alaska at 10 feet, I gave him every chance possible to change his mind. I had to change it for him...
Everyone has an opinion and every situation is different. I think this was handled well. My impression is that the bear is young and more curious than anything. I probably would have sprayed him much earlier. All that backing up was risky. Hopefully yogi will now have strong enough negative experience with humans that he will keep his distance. Thanks for posting this, it is very educational.
Exactly my thought! Was waiting for momma to come out. Lol
They guy literally said he was baiting the bear on Facebook. He was doing a tutorial which bear sprays work best and said always try them out on younger bears first like he did in that video. It was very informative at least now I know which bear spray to mess with the neighbors dogs and cats in my neighborhood lol
@@SoulShadowXYwell I am not impressed to hear this. If he truly was baiting them and subjecting any to the misery of the spray just for his ‘tests’ then I am quite disgusted by it. If this was in my area and I had more info I would probably have passed it on to the local CO.
@@stevehamilton3181 How else are they supposed to test it? It’s unpleasant but its not like its lethal.
@@stevehamilton3181At first I felt the same way but then again they have to test it somehow and this experience will likely condition the bear into being more fearful of humans and less likely to get into close proximity with people, which could potentially be dangerous for both people and the bear itself.
May I make a suggestion, instead of waiting until the bear charges for using the spray, squirt a little into the air as you retreat slowly, the bear is following your scent and so the idea would be that it reaches the scent of the repellent as it is in inquisitive mode and before it makes the decision to attack. This would hopefully cause the bear to break off so to speak and not engage.
Always a genius Monday morning quarterback. He probably didn't want to take the chance of enraging the bear and only sprayed it when he absolutely had to, which is the smartest thing to do.

Amazing how the bear honestly looks curious. Almost like it just wants to play with the way it jumps on the trees. Definitely smart to always keep an eye on them.
I've never seen a bear act like that before! Couldn't tell what he was thinking.
The bear is curious, and likely trying to decide if, when and how to attack this guy. It is not playful, or innocent. It is abnormal for a bear to approach or follow you. This black bear was nervous, yet still pushing himself to follow this guy. The way he used the trees was more about protection for the bear, and when he started to climb multiple trees, it was because his instinct and tendency is to flee danger, but he was pushing his luck and he was nervous about it. In short, this was among the most dangerous situations you can have with a black bear, and the guy should have stopped, and did everything in his power to scare it as soon as he realized it was following him. The longer he allowed it, th more emboldened the bear came and more of a chance he made a mistake like tripping which triggers the attack...
He protected Itself
Is only half grown an is curious about the sounds of the man talking.thats why it was jumping up in the tree's when getting to close.
Yeah play with his food
Spraying a perpendicular "fence " in front of the bear with the spray would have stopped the pursuit in the beginning. This is an example of how to get eaten.
Had an encounter with a black bear just like this last spring. It was only about 150lbs an from the moment it seen me an decides to start following I knew I had to do something. I didn't have bear spray or a gun, and it was backing me into a thicket of thorn bushes. I went from talking to it just like this guy to realizing that wasn't working. So In a split second decision I decided im done backing down. I put my arms up an out an screamed at it as loud as I could while stomping my feet towards it. That bear immediately said F this an went straight up the closest tree.
Thanks for the tip.
That's how it's done with black bears. With grizzlies you stay calm and stand your ground if charged.
How did it happen this spring when it’s still winter?

Correct.
You're much more tolerant than I sir. The first round is a warning to cease and desist, if the bear persists I would be asking the CO if I could put the bear in my freezer so it didn't go to waste. I don't play games or reason with dangerous animals.
Yeah that stalking behavior wasn't going to evolve more than once
When the bear started jumping onto trees, he was just practicing for what he was planning to do to the person. Notice how he started doing that as he got closer and closer to the person. The next time he jumped, it was going to be on the person.
Never take a chance. Young bear or not, there's always instinct and that first time. He's big enough to be deadly. Facing the bear, walking backward is the safe thing to do. He may have been attacked if he turned his back. Talking to the bear was a way of trying to keep him at a distance. Better to hit the bear so he got a snoot full of spray. Make him regret following a human. He'll never forget it. Glad he's ok.

Kept letting it get too close. Dude is a fool.
I live in black bear country. That bear was an adolescent, just being curious. You don't have to jump around and act crazy but if you would have raised your voice and yelled at it, it would have scattered fairly quickly. Also you could have sprayed the grass in front of you. As soon as it got a snort it would have backed right off.
Excellent idea, that should be standard. It did look like a juvenile to me. I disagree with the commenter that said the bear was in predatory mode. Don't think so, but that's why you have the pepper spray. 💕
I disagree. Because if you cause it pain without touching it you can be sure that bear will most likely never attack a human ever in its life. It will associate humans with intense pain.

My advice is to not talk to the bear like it’s a 3 year old child but to talk and yell like you’re much meaner than the bear! I’m glad the bear spray worked.. but really I think the bear was thinking you were gonna pet him and give him a treat!
The bear 🐻 got a treat...
Doesn't that depend in the kind of bear? Black bears yell aggressively towards them but grizzly bears have calm communication with them?? I've luckily never encountered either but I hike in grizzly country so I definitely carry the hot sauce.
He sounded wounded to me - not the correct tone. Grab a limb and beat the ground and trees - they know what that means......
Probably following hoping he would drop some food. Kid did ok though, the little blast was just enough to give him a mouth full of something he didn't want. Hopefully that will hinder his curiosity. Didn't seem to be overly aggressive but better to be safe than sorry. 👍 both went home, that's a happy ending.
Better to have a curious bear approaching you slowly because you are talking to it like a three year old than a bear running at you at full speed because it sees you as a threat.

The scary part is that they not always work and there's a chance you make them even (more) angry. At least, my dad's words.
When I am bow hunting, I certainly wouldn't rely merely on some bear spray, but also having a shotgun and/or handgun with adequate calibre carried around just in case things goes south.
But since it's a young one, non lethal solutions usually work well.

I know stories about prisoners that didn´t even react on those sprays at all, except they became angrier.
It's important to know what kind of bear territory you are in, and to wear items that create noise to prevent startling the animals. Many experienced hikers use the simple solution of attaching jingle bells to their packs. Identifying the bears in your area is easily done by examining their feces. Brown bears will be full of small twigs and berry seeds. Black bears will be the same with bones from small birds and animals present. Grizzly feces will contain jingle bells and smell strongly of bear spray. Be safe out there!

Sounds like prey
He had his arms down and he was backing away on top of that. Almost everything about what he was doing said "prey"
This shows how forgiving bears can be in an encounter, and how dangerous they aren't.
@@MrZega000 It’s like he had a neon sign over his head: I’m harmless and delicious! Please eat me!
My understanding (from watching another video) is that bear spray should be deployed well beyond the close range this bear gets. The other video made mention of how quickly a charging bear can cover ground and the idea of bear spray is to lay out clouds along the bear's intended path, ahead of the bear so that it has to go through the stuff to reach you. Apparently, this large bear spray canisters has some decent range. And, as noted in this video, as soon as the individual deployed the spray, the bear was off and running, so I think I'd opt for the quick deployment of any bear heading my way.
I have one that sprays 40 feet. The thing about this situation is, if the guy would've been loud and aggressive rather than his soft, friendly, "hey, bear", he probably would've scared the bear off without even needing the spray. Black bears are way more skittish than most people realize. But outside of that, he definitely waits wayyyyy too long and lets the bear get way too close before he FINALLY sprays. And it only took a quick tap of the trigger.
Yeah and your goal should be to deter the bear, not hurt it.
I would never trust my life against a bear on spray. I'm always strapped when I enter Bear country, even a puny black bear. Any bear that wants to attack me will taste some 10mm rounds from my Glock
I agree with you
He waited 5 business days to actually spray the bear then practically waited until the bear was upwind!
I can give an analogy from the human world when politeness is mistaken for weakness. The bear just wanted to eat, and the man behaved like a victim until the last moment. I hope this will be a lesson for both.
Go bear go.!! 🐻. Don't lose your meal. Nature has blessed u with the power.

Handled very well.
A harsher tone of voice might of helped to scare it away. Yours was more of a friendly welcoming tone.
This guy is crazy for not using the spray before, because imagine if another bear came from behind him because he was too focused in the first one.
Or if he tript over a log .. dude was playing with his life

Bears aren’t pack animals
@@Sniperboy5551 nobody said they are pack animals, but this guy been walking backwards for long distance so it could happen that he accidentally enters another bear territory and he gets attacked from behind so.
Yall are straight idiots if you think that bear was a threat. He endangered himself more than that bear did.
The bear was an uncompensated participant in this commercial.
He just seemed curious more than anything.
To people who aren’t outdoorsman, this is not aggressive behavior. This is strictly curiosity and playfulness out of a juvenile. if that guy would’ve stopped, moving around, the bear would’ve lost interest and went his own way more than likely. I’ve had bar encounters where they’ve literally walked within five or 6 feet of me and turned around and left…. Yes, use caution and if something doesn’t feel right, do what you need to. But please don’t assume that every animal in the woods is out to get you.
To people like you "who aren't outdoorsman", a black bear following you like this is among the most dangerous situations you can have with them. It is abnormal for a black bear to approach you, or follow you like here. This was not a habituated bear that was walking the same trail and met, or caught up with you, it was following you with intent and either looking for the right moment to attack, or deciding if it was going to attack. So, it is impossible to know if he was curious, or in fact acting predatory, but both are bad for you. In that regard you need to change their mind as soon as you realize they are approaching you at close range, and worse following you. The best action is to stop, hold your ground and do everything in your power to scare them. yell, clap, look big, even pick up anything to throw if that fails. I can speak more to all the details of this if you like, however the longer this bear followed, the more danger he was in. In this instance had he tripped, or turned his back, it likely triggers an attack.
But you are correct when you later state "don’t assume that every animal in the woods is out to get you". Bears be it grizzly or black unless habituated to some capacity will commonly flee as soon as they are aware of you, often before you knew there were there. It is extremely rare to be attacked by either species. Speaking directly to black bears, they are timid by nature and will almost always flee a threat, even when you accidentally get too close and startle them, and in many instances even when cubs are near (just not in between you and the sow). That is not to say they won't attack in these situations, but that their first instinct is always flight. Most black bear attacks on people are offensive in nature which means food is involved. So, either you have a habituated and food conditioned bear that associates humans with food, or you are the food.
Again, it is rare to be attacked by either species. Hollywood had created the culture of a man eating grizzly, but if you are going to be consumed by a bear, it is more likely to be a black bear. Regardless, pay attention, never approach them and you will likely be fine. But make no mistake, in this video, the guy was lucky he was able to deploy the bear spray because his actions of allowing the bear to follow increased his odds greatly of becoming a meal...
The strength of bears is scary strong ,the way they can move vertically just as easerly as along the ground never ceases to amaze me,
I would've probably sprayed long before he did lol,it's incredible how surprisingly agile these animals are,so light and fast that I don't think he should've allowed it to get as close as it did
That's what I was just thinking. Idk how far that spray can go, but I was just reading a guide that said to start spraying when they're coming towards you and within about 30 feet away.
The spray that I carry is rated for 25 feet,I probably would've started spraying at 30 lol
Yes you’re suppose to release it in the air before it gets near you. And let it rip at 15 ft (while holding a high caliber hand gun, in my case)
Waiting almost 3 years for only 2 seconds of spray at the end is crazy
The way he was saying “hey bear” even I woulda been curious
As soon as that bear started hopping onto the trees, I could tell it was becoming excited and the hunting instinct was kicking in.
I’m glad you had your camera, but more glad you had bear spray!
Why does it climb the trees like that when hunting?
If he wanted to hunt him down he would. He was just curious.
The bear saw him as a competition, not as food, that is why he climbed trees, to look bigger and tougher.
@@Korovkin_Pavel It was a young bear. It was being playful. But a playful bear can mean a dead human. This guy had way more patience than me. The second that bear started running my direction, bear spray would have been all up in his face.

It looked like it was just curious but boy did it get close.
Bear encounters are extremely common in my province. I've seen a black bear nearly every single day this summer. Just yelling loudly and aggressively will get them to back off. Also stand as tall as you can and lift your arms to appear bigger.

@@IcySyncand people go on about how dangerous Australian wildlife is haha
This is pretty textbook as for what to do when running into a bear. Be calm, don’t run, and slowly back away. The other other thing, like a few comments mentioned, is to put your arms up or make yourself look as large as possible, and maybe make a loud noise while doing so. Still, sometimes none of this works, and that’s why a can of bear spray is an important thing to have while in the woods.
Maybe don't keep calling the bear..
Plan A….. Make sure you have a rifle in bear country
And a .357
Eh, I’d never shoot a bear. There are a lot more humans on earth than bears, and they’re just doing what they do. We have our own numbers to spare.
@@cgimovieman you're funny af. The only reason why you shoot a bear is if it tries to attack you. You're right, we can definitely spare you.
The bear is showing him there's no point in running or trying to climb a tree...
Bro really said "Cameraman never dies"
The best way to keep a bear away is to start being as loud as you can. Other options include opening up your jacket, like wings, and try to appear as large as possible. If you're with multiple people, group together. The main thing is to show the bear that you aren't worth the energy to take down. Generally, bears have poor eyesight so doing the things I mentioned are likely to succeed.
Or just shoot it in the heart and lungs

Wouldn't go around in Grizzley country with just spray. You'd want a high powered handgun or a .308 rifle.
Bears rely on there sence of smell to hunt, once peppered lost that for a min. and re assessed the food thought.

Notwithstanding the fact that this BLACK bear is brown this is an excellent video! At 0:50, bear is at least 50' away and it is small (150 pd) but steadily closing the gap. Note how it climbs a tree with each approach and pay attention to the tree shadows because this little bear is more than curious. In fact, it has bad intention and it is listening intently (ears up) but it isn't in attack mode (ears tucked) and Curtis is lucky he had his bear spray or he would've been fugged
Note at 1:45 bear is licking his chops and note how quickly it went from nowhere to up a tree at 2:00. Now multiply that by 10! That gives you an idea of how FAST a bear can be and note how there are no more shadows at 2:30. In fact, Curtis is out of trees and yet bear is still approaching. Only now his head is down and his ears are slightly tucked and do not be deceived by its small size. If it was hungry and Curtis didn't have his bear spray this little 150 pd bear bear would have had him for lunch!
Well it is a black bear though.
That young bear was getting bolder and bolder, it was thinking of attacking you from the moment it saw you but was intimidated; none of his prey stand upright like that, the closest reference on how to take that animal down for food would be charging the trees like he’s doing (could also be an instinctual response to test your intimidation) but in short he was out foraging and when he saw you was thinking of making a human sandwich.
No, he just looked curious. Believe me if he wanted to hunt him down he would.

bears climb trees when they feel insecure
From what I've gathered I don't think there are many animals that would actually eat humans as we quite literally taste horrible to them but hunger is always the dominant side when close to starvation so you can never be careful.
I don't know much but it seems like if you have a deterrent that you should use it sooner and not keep backing up for so long. If you're walking backwards you're more likely to fall and then you'd be dead. Just remember when in bear country the best deterrent is to take a slow Uncle with you.
The longer her backed up,
the higher the UA-cam views
Where has it been filmed ?
The way he had many chances where he could’ve very easily made one wrong move walking backwards and tripping on one of the many logs on the ground😭 I was so worried he would fall on his back and the bear would come storming
Yea, we've been primed for that scenario by countless horror movies where someone falls and can't get up or the car suddenly won't start.
That's what I was thinking too
Ehh, he was walking very slowly. And likely looking backwards more often than you can tell with the camera. Not very easy to trip when you are being calm and slow like this dude was.
Tripping while doing the walking backwards thing is a massive hazard and shouldn't be discounted.
It was quite intense.that big bear moved fast .I thought it was going to pounce from the tree.the guy dealt with this scenario very well.
Easy to say from behind a screen, but backing away was making you seem like prey. Loud and firm is the way.
And also easy to say loud and firm is the way until it charges then you are truly prey
