the game crashing was something of a blessing just because i could tell you were getting REALLY frustrated and tired, and this game's ending is just way too cool to not fully appreciate. I think it's really interesting that as early as the second game, they started to dispel the notion that Dedede was Kirby's "Bowser," like they were already paving the way for their more friendly rivalry seen in later games

Fun Fact: Dedede WAS going to tell Kirby what he was doing according to the manual, but the combination of his past misdeed and him bathing in the fountain made Kirby storm off to undo his so-called plot rather than hear him out.
He really is a good king when it counts... Even if his actions kind of undermine said efforts sometimes.

Kirby's Adventure is possibly the best-looking game on the NES, in my opinion; it's absolutely oozing with visual charm. The way Kirby flips when doing a big jump, or how he bounces after a long fall, or the copy icon displaying "NOTHING" when an enemy doesn't give an ability and "OUCH" when you take damage, not to mention the excellent designs and colors of the levels and backgrounds... And then there's the intro sequence, the open hub levels, the pause screen art, the pre-level cutscenes...! And that's not even taking into account the gameplay, which is amazingly creative and fun in its own right.
Honestly, for my money, Kirby's Adventure is better-looking than even something like Super Mario World. Sure, the NES hardware obviously limited what they could do graphically, but the amazing animation work and smart use of what resources they had are enough to put it up there for me.

Kirby's Adventure is a masterpiece of what can be accomplished on an NES for sure. Yeah, the cost is some slowdown in places, but I'd almost call it worth it. When I was a kid I never even noticed it, but I did notice how pretty the game was

I love that Meta Knight's first appearance in the series was as an anti-hero who shows up to help Kirby out with invincibility candy.
People who know nothing about the series always think that he's a villain, and yet, he was being this considerate and kind even in his introduction.
There's really only ever been one instance in the series where he acted as a genuine, deliberate antagonist, and even then, there's a lot of debate about his reasons for doing so.
Also, I love the Meta-Knights. I care about them so much. They're just,,, little guys. 🥺

@@shaken_thesaurus2001 So in Nightmare in Dreamland, there’s 3 modes that can be 100%ed, Normal, Hard (Kirby has 3 max health instead of 6, unlocks after 100%ing normal) and Meta Knightmare (play as Meta Knight instead of Kirby also with 3 max health, unlocks after 100%ing Hard)
You can’t REALLY 100% Meta Knightmare since it’s technically considered a Sub-Game and you can’t save (that’s actually one of the main gimmicks OF Meta Knightmare) but you can do everything that you’d normally do to 100% NiDL (all secret buttons, all levels, all optional boss fights & arenas) as Meta Knight IN Meta Knightmare which I would consider another 100%, adding up to 300% total
      TL:DR: there’s 3 modes you can 100% per save file 👍

    Just so you know now:
When you inhale 2 power enemies and get the "Mix" roulette, it's actually not random.
If you let the roullette play out till it stops on it's own, you will get the same result from the same pair of enemies.
Two of the secret switches (that require either hammer or stone) have paired up powered enemies nearby (spark and fireball in one case, spark and spark in the other), and if you get the "Mix" roullette from them and let it play, you will GET Hammer or Stone, respectivey.
If you get 2 Stone enemies together, you can get a garunteed UFO.
I remember there being a wierd thing where if you wait too long to...swallow and start the roullette, it changes the result (maybe the roullette is already "spinning" as soon as the Mix icon appears, and you just join in the cycle whenever you press down??????), but if you initiate the roullette immediately, you will get the exact same power result every time.

10:43 Oddly enough this description of the story actually directly contradicts what the game itself tells you (in case you didn't know, if you wait around long enough in the title screen it will first show you a small tutorial and then tell you the plot of the game in a little picturebook format which i find both adorable and pretty impresive for an NES game), because this description says that dedede stealing the star rod caused everybody to start having nightmares while the game itself says that everybody was *already* having nightmares before that and dedede stealing the star rod caused them to just stop having any dreams whatsoever, which i would say is a vast improvement over having to experiences nightmares every single time you go to sleep.

One final comment now that I'm through. I absolutely loved watching you two discover the origins of so many Kirby things and gushing over how pretty this game can be. Sorry the NSO emulator crashed on you. More than once. That's the actual worst.
Some more thoughts on the game: Orange Ocean is the most evil world in the game. I think it's literally the only world where every stage has a button to press, and a lot of them are really mean with invisible doors. In comparison, Rainbow Resort is practically relaxing, even though the enemy placement really starts reaching into bs levels there. The DL1 throwback is so cool. I'd also like to point out that the moon secret is actually older than this game. Maybe the next time you play DL1...😏 Nightmare is the series first "eldritch" being, and in my opinion one of the few that actually counts as such. The scrolling parallax in the Nightmare orb fight is so gorgeous, and overall I feel like if Adventure was released as a "retro" indie game now it would still be hailed as gorgeous. And the amount of expression they got into the tiny sprites is so good, Dedede pleading with Kirby to stop, Kirby's annoyed look as he punts Dedede away. Gah
A small point about the importance of this game, in a weird way. The manual and intro cutscene play up "Dedede is up to his old tricks again, go stop him" and you're led to think this is just another Bowser type scenario where Dedede is gonna be Kirby's recurring nemesis. And then they pull the Nightmare twist on you. And that moment is the moment that made current series director realize that games could tell stories and made him want to make games. Adventure is at least partially the reason we have Shinya Kumazaki leading the charge from Return to Dream Land onwards, and giving us crazy stuff like the entire mood whiplash that is the finale of Forgotten Land.
Also it's been really fun watching Ian start to develop an instinctive feel for the kind of places Kirby games hide stuff. The modern games are way fairer about it, but it's just so cool to see.
Super Star Ultra is absolutely multiplayer, but i don't know the best way to set it up. If you end up playing the og Super Star instead, I have one small request: Sit on the title screen for each mode long enough for the cutscene to play. It matters only in one mode where it makes the ending make more sense, but it's interesting nonetheless for the others. Ultra does not have this problem and will auto play the cutscenes when you start each mode, much like how the modern games do. Ultra has more stuff in it in general, and has some qol fixes compared to the og, but if you decide to play the og instead i think you'll still enjoy it. Super Star is a classic no matter what

58:06 I'm still largely in this camp. While it is possible for a game to be fun without challenge, it's rare. The Stanley Parable has basically no difficulty to it, Mario Paint was enjoyable despite most of the game not having difficulty, but some genres can't pull it off. A game without difficulty is like a story without a conflict, it *can* work, but it needs to be a particular type of story for it to still be engaging.

It's a shame what happened with the Crash and all, but I honestly was expecting after the Nightmare Orb fight because that's exactly what happened to me when I played through Adventure.
But aside from from bs emulator stuff, Adventure is such an excellent Kirby game. Definitely a Top 10 Kirby game imo. The addition of Copy Abilities, the levels are fun, it introduces Meta Knight, it's the first real look of Dedede being a hero in his own right, and god it looks so good for an NES game. Even if it means it pushes the NES so hard that lag is very much an issue.
For the next step, if you want to do Dream Land 3 next, I'd recommend doing Kirby 64 The Crystal Shards after that to wrap up the Dark Matter Trilogy that started with DL2. Also, yeah I'd recommend playing Super Star Ultra over base Super Star. The original does have reasons to play it over the remake like arguably better graphics and music as well as far easier multiplayer, but the new content in SSU makes it better for newer Kirby fans.

Rather than Leaving a lot of smaller comments I'm gonna put one big one for the whole video in order so I might end up repeating things. However I must answer the most important thing first, Kirby Super Star Ultra is completely playable co-op but if you play on official hardware you need two DS's and two copies of the game. If you emulate it I don't know how you would play co-op but I'm sure someone has made a guide on how to do it.
First off Meta knight appears at multiple points in this game helping Kirby with invincibility candy which is missing in the remake.
In terms of the emulator lagging like the NES I know some games actually were programmed or planned around the lag so removing it could cause problems in some games (most would probably be fine though).
I know you already noticed this but a few of the abilities got combined into one in later games.
Ok, full transparency, I actually made notes on my phone to make this comment all at once after I finished the video but this one I put "What changed like Kirby" and I have no clue what I meant by that. Edit: I remember now, it's related to the next sentence.
Part of the reason you probably weren't as into Kirby is that you played 2 spin offs and Squeak Squad, which isn't a bad game by any means but I do think it is a weaker entry in the Kirby series.
The green blocks underwater in Yogurt Yard were changed in the remake to be more clear by changing to metal blocks.
The boss that's in the water in the first stage of Orange Ocean is definitely the most annoying part of this game I'd say.
It's not much clearer but the bomb block on the boat does make a damaged spot on the ship in the remake.
I know you find the hidden doors annoying but clearly the game taught you how to find them because you were able to find them. That said you would definitely prefer the remake in this aspect as most secret doors were made visible at least.
In the second stage of Rainbow Resort (the boss rush) you actually can do a harder boss rush by entering a secret door above the main door.
In stage 5 of Rainbow Resort I'm impressed you were able to get into the canon as that is certainly the hardest challenge in the game.
One thing that I love about revisiting these older Kirby games (as I also played some of the earlier ones for the first time recently too) is seeing that Kirby ever since the second game has loved it's own history. Especially with the secret switch being one of the few secrets from the original game.
Seeing the error screen pop up during the final boss was truly the best way this episode could have ended seeing as how we heard about the problems you've had with finishing this game for a while now.
The pause screen descriptions for bosses actually started in Super Star Ultra (not the OG but the remake) although in that game and the original Return to Dreamland it was only big important bosses.
I know you've already basically played through this game twice but I actually would still recommend the remake, Nightmare in Dreamland, even if you downloaded a completed save file and only played through Meta Knightmare as it is the first playable instance of Meta Knight.

This game has released in 1993. The Super Famicom released in 1990, and the Super Nintendo in 1991. The NES was already in its deathbed, yet Sakurai wanted to develop a game for it anyway, because he felt there was much untapped potential for the console. It is pretty clear for people well familiar with NES games how much of a technical marvel this game is for the console. Which comes with the unfortunate downside of lots of slowdown. Ian is right though, emulated games shouldn't come with slowdown nowadays, that's one of the reasons people agree that the 3DS version is the definitive one.

While I haven't played Air Ride (I don't think so anyway), Canvas Curse and Squeak Squad, I know that Air Ride is one that takes time to learn and enjoy, Canvas Curse is an odd Kirby game with it's gameplay, and Squeak Squad from what I can tell is one of the least liked mainline Kirby games. So I can understand why Ian may have had a bad first impression with Kirby. The games I think are still worth playing at some point though.
For Super Star Ultra Multiplayer you need 2 DS and 2 cartridges to play the entire game together. Otherwise you can play minigames and the first adventure of Spring Breeze together with Download Play from 1 cartridge.
Still I will say, with Kirby's Adventure, while later levels are rough (Hi Orange Ocean... you cause me much pain) I think this is one of my favourite Kirby games to replay. For an NES GAME, this game is gorgeous, and does so much with it's abilities and level design. and this second game is where we start getting stuff like character development with King Dedede, and the eldritch horrors, with our first one being Nightmare.
and what is cool about Nightmare, is that it got to be the main antagonist for the Kirby Right Back at Ya show. Normally being a background threat who creates monsters and who took down many star warriors (which in the show Kirby is one of them despite having the maturity of an adorable baby). Honestly loved Kirby Right Back at Ya as a show despite it not following much Kirby lore and being it's own separate thing, and was how I was introduced to Kirby (before I even knew it was a game series).

Four hours is a bit long for me to stream of consciousness comment. So instead, here's some of my general thoughts about the game
Kirby's Adventure was my very first Kirby game ever, and probably one of my first *games* I ever played. I have very fond memories of curling up on my grandmother's spare bed, running through random levels and restarting the console so I could play the minigames over and over. I was too young and too distracted to beat the game or anything. But it was bright and simple and made way more sense than stuff like Zelda. As I got older, I remember practicing REALLY HARD to beat Quick Draw. I actually succeed a few times! As an adult, I looked up the frame requirements, and some of them are so absurd.
For the longest time, i thought this was the ONLY Kirby game. I had no idea about the others for YEARS.
I got a Wii in college and got this game on the virtual console. I resolved this time to actually beat it! The finale of this game BLEW ME AWAY. I managed to play it without being spoiled and it was so good.
Interestingly, the actual official manual says nothing about nightmares. It only says that the people can't dream at all. This game also features an intro cutscene that says the same thing, that no one can dream, but you didn't sit on the title screen long enough to see it.
Also as a point of interest, this game features the first *Kirby* HAL room, but apparently the company had done it in games prior even. It's in an early stage and requires something that i think is only possible on an NES. I don't expect you'll find it naturally, so no shame in googling that lol
Anyway, I'm just going to sit back and enjoy. I hope this game doesn't make you too mad. I know it's got some obtuse stuff going on with LITERALLY INVISIBLE doors and stuff. I'm just glad 100% isn't required for anything other than getting all the minigame doors and stuff

56:00 actually merry magoland has Samurai Kirby from Kirby Superstar, which is a completely different minigame which may or may not have potential passing similarities to this completely different and unrelated minigame called Quick Draw.

anyway this isn't 100% because you didn't do Extra and didn't perfect clear the minigames and probably missed some 1-Ups and didn't get that light easter egg in that one room that I don't remember what it is but I remember you didn't get it /hj
As long as you can both play Superstar Ultra you should do that because I think it's missing 0 content from Superstar (if it's missing any it's very little, maybe some cosmetic stuff? one sec ima google... according to what i'm finding it requires 2 systems and 2 game carts for co-op btw but i don't know if that applies to the version for the console known as the Nintendo PC? I couldn't find anything substantial that is missing from Ultra meanwhile you miss out on a LOT by going raw Superstar, so it's probably just worth it to go Singleplayer Ultra, or if you can preferable Co-Op Ultra.) and it has a lot of extra content. If anything it might be worth as a Singleplayer thing, even though I prefer the co-op stuff. (Like I said in the Parentheses, OK look this part was typed non-linearly and I just don't feel like quality controlling it)
(tl;dr Yes, Superstar ULTRA is preferable, even Singleplayer but if you can do Co-Op Ultra that'd be cooler, just probably not Kirby Superstar Non-Ultra unless you wanna play both or somethin')

Afaik, the only things really different is that some of the treasures in GCO are different (same puzzles just different sprites) and they re localized the dialogue in RoMK (which I think actually makes it more accurate to the Japanese text)
Otherwise the main changes are new modes, tweaked physics, I think they introduced chip damage for when you get hit while guarding (I think og only has it for large hits and ultra has it for any attacks), and qol stuff like not needing to make a helper to drop your ability

So you were supposed to go up to the very top turn on rock and then it would go underwater in rock form, and you would break through. Funnily enough, so anything the rock can break the hammer can break so you manage to brute force an alternate solution. I was an agony the whole time. Great episode though but still: agony. 😉

Ooh boy, this one I'll definitely have to watch in chunks, probably one or two worlds at a time. Excited to see it, though!
So, funny thing about my own experience with the game, the copy I bout from a used game store was in French for some reason (I guess a Canadian version???). So I couldn't actually read the text, not that it really did much to hamper my enjoyment.
This game does some absolutely crazy stuff for an NES game, to the point where I think I've heard it described as near-impossible. I guess that's one big advantage of coming out so late in the system's lifetime!
Right now I'm just patiently waiting for you to find my favorite* ability in this game and see what you think of it
*"favorite" in no way means best or easiest to control
It's so fun getting these little BLG lore tidbits about the start of both your gaming journeys.
"That's gotta be the toughest secret in this game" Ian says, as Orange Ocean 3 looms menacingly in the distance. And as far as HAL rooms go, they actually originated here, with an easter egg that I think was meant to not actually be reachable by players?
There's ball! It's so fun in a crazy way, plus it does excellent damage if you can somehow manage to not get hit!
Light ability, AKA the precursor to Wisdom Kirby. I feel like Kirby games do a good job with these sorts of one-off secret powers with super-specific uses, plus the animation for it is neat.
You've definitely got some input delay going on, based on the times on quick draw.
Getting hammer all the way through the stage is definitely tense. Good job!
Fun thing about that room with the horrible throw miniboss in the water: there are some weird properties going on with the door there that can be used to completely break the game.
Oh wow, you are indeed meant to use throw for that 1up, but instead you managed to suck up both the enemy and its projectile, which apparently counts as a double swallow? And let you break the blocks that way instead, removing the need for throw.
Yeah, whatever Ian was looking at was clearly from people who already knew the game just playing straight through.
When it comes to the ability mix, it's actually not random at all, the order of the roulette is determined by which enemies you swallow, so if you wait it out, the same enemy pair will always end on the same power.
And here we are at Orange Ocean 3, the bane of Kirby's Adventure 100%. That first door isn't indicated in any way whatsoever, aside from the fact that the area basically has nothing. The remake made it actually seeable, thankfully.
THIS was where you had that crash?!?! OUCH. No other words can describe that. I'm so sorry for you.
I just want to say watching this has been a delight. Thank you.
Woohoo! First try win against Meta-knight!
Oh hey, speaking of doors with no indication, here's the first introduction of Miniboss Tower (there's an alternate harder version of the level if you go in an invisible door directly above the obvious one, and succeeding gets you a bunch of 1ups, again the remake makes this door have an indicator)!
No, you had not had a BLGQotD yet. As for why pink and green are so pretty together? I don't really know color theory, but i'd bet they're complementary.
Funny thing about the repeated use of suspend points for the cannons is that it meant you never realized the fuse tip respawns off screen like enemies do.
Yeah, Rainbow Resort stage 6 is awesome, like if Mario 3 had had a 1-1 remake as one of its levels. And Ian had learned to enter the moon! Yay! (that particular secret has been around from the very beginning)
Good thing you had that savestate! That was one of the funniest crashes I've ever seen.
And welcome to the start of Teleporting Space(or related) Boss! Nightmare fight has such good music.
Between those two, definitely a loser.
Again, this has been a great time, and I'm glad you enjoyed the game.
Just a bit of advice when it comes to Dream Land 3: there is no shame whatsoever in savestating the minigames. They can get unreasonable. As for Super Star vs Suer Star Ultra, Ultra has a ton of extra content you do not want to miss out on, but I'm not sure if/how 2 player works there, while 2 player Super Star is incredibly fun. So yeah, I'm really not sure how best to deal with that. Maybe you could play the base game in Super Star together, then download a save for Ultra with the base game content completed and pick up from there? Just a thought.
    Croissant.

Between Super Star and Super Star Ultra, it's definitely better you play Ultra IMO, especially with the extra content and certain things it introduces in that version (that you would probably want to visit anyways).
And multiplayer is still a thing on that version, albeit you will need two systems to do it that way. IIRC you can either have two copies of the game for each system to have a screen, or you can opt to play on one system with one copy and you both just look at that. I don't know how your setups work but either of those should work out fine.
And I don't know if you know or not (or if it tells you in-game), but Dreamland 3 does have multiplayer too, and you'll see a good 'ol friend by doing so.
