Layout Tour - Modern NS Asheville District in HO Scale 2020

- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- The NS Asheville District layout is a modern layout that has been built by my father and I over the past 15 or so years. With much help from friends, we have made a lot of progress since our last layout tour several years ago. Thanks for watching, and please let us know if you have any questions in the section below!
- Josh and Tom
Super cool!!! Unbelievable work. 15 years, that's a long time but what a journey and it's not over.. Well done!
Did anyone else see Mario??
Thanks Troy! Really appreciate it! - Josh
Notice Mario at the Louisiana Ave. yard!
NS years from now you'll look back on these years with your dad as some of the best memories
This guy is the Bob Ross of model railroading
Lol
The more you watch, the more you think about it.
Now that's a comment lol.
😆😆😆😆
yes, indeed
"Our Chips are HUUUUUGE". Great sense of humor. Josh, gotta tell you this is one of the best video's I've seen, and I really appreciate the work you and your dad have put in. Love seeing some of the surprises that popped up during the video, like the sign I referenced, and the mario cart. etc.
Really appreciate the comment Scott! Thanks so much for watching!
@@nsmodeler24 Question, what music did you use through out the video? Asking for a friend
Between this and your layout tour of the BSNF Fall River Division, your narration is most impressive. It's really nice to see you and your dad share this hobby together. I've been an active model railroader since 1975 when I return from Europe. Your workmanship and concepts is a big motivator ( I'm 71 years old) and so glad your on You Tube. Well Done!!!!!!!!!!!!
You and your father have a fantastic layout!!
I noticed you mentioned "spring switches" and could find a way to do it. Well, I needed a way to just that on my two return loops and I found a solution at Azatrax.com It's a circuit that uses sensors to move the points and then return them. It works great, you might give it a look! Again, great layout!! Thanks for showing it! ...Claude
Hey Claude, Thanks for the idea! I'll definitely have to look into that. - Josh
NSmodeler24
Look here: www.azatrax.com. Under switch control. The D2T-3W-SS
Holy crap! Azatrax makes some great stuff!
I would love to go rafting in the empty river
An amazing layout. You, your father and friends are all talented. Thanks for the update as I've been following along over a few years. It's very nice to see it coming together for you. Thanks again for the video update.
Thanks for following and for the kind comment. Means a lot! - Josh
When I saw the comment about “OUR CHIPS ARE HUGE!!!” I thought it meant the woodchips in the rail cars before I finished the video. That is hysterical 😂
Wow, that is unbelievable!
Hi Jaw Tooth!
I've lived in the Asheville area for my entire life, and as a kid lived in Ridgecrest and Black Mountain, and spent a lot of time in Old Fort as well with my grandparents. All of those communities have a rich railroad history, thus my love today for the hobby. Its really entertaining to recognize somewhere that you guys have worked into the layout. Its surreal seeing a model of your home. Very well done to the both of you, and keep up the good work. If you're ever giving out golden tickets to visit the layout, keep me in mind!
Nice video. I have a few questions though. What kind of track do you use? And also, what brand of signals do you use?
When you going to put , Norfolk and Western 611 on it be cool
He has 611
This is amazing. Makes me want to start on mine.
I was just wondering when the next layout tour would be. Fantastic layout!
Thanks! :) - Josh
NSmodeler24 can you run a mixed freight train with a heritage unit trailing
I love that horn
NSmodeler24.
I thought you said there would be RAPTORS in the river 7:58! I thought you might be taking the freelance/prototype layout a little more freelance side. That is such an amazing layout. I just started building my first 4x8 layout to test my skills before I design my room sized layout. Your videos are amazing and very helpful. I have gotten so many ideas even though I want to model BNSF in Illinois.
Where is the heart button cause I love this!
Not the best joke I’ve heard but I can’t disagree
21:42 is that? No, IT CANT BE! Mario is in the top left 🤣
Dude one of the biggest layouts I've seen. Really cool thp
Awesome layout kudos to your Dad for his skills!! I love what you guys have built.
Thanks Ed!
I've seen a few train layouts and I gotta say your's is the most detailed, realistic, well thought of layout I have ever seen.. 👍👍
😮 wow that much train
Funny you mention trying to make a scale operating spring switch. I asked the owner of caboose industries (makers of miniature ground throws) at the greatest hobby on earth tour at Dulles Virginia expo center last month. He said the same thing. There's too many variables to make it work right much of it has to do with weight. I was hoping he said it was in the works but nope. Not even going to try.
I love the "picture frame" snow scene!! what a cool idea
I have been following along for more than 7 years and it’s just awesome to see what you and your Dad created. Can’t wait to see what you guys think up next. All the best, John
John, thanks for following all this time. Really means a lot! -Josh
I'd love to hear the story behind the Mario Kart at 21:40
I wonder as well
@@MemphisSubRailfan Haha my did hid it there a while ago and waited to see how long it would take for me to find it! Excellent hiding spot if I say so myself :)
The scenes are so good looking that something like that totally caught my eye as soon as the camera panned by it.
man I remember you commenting on MSTS videos over 10 years ago, small world
And funny how things never change after all those years!
I like the old design of the Taco Bell restaurants even the design before the one you have vs the modern shoe box look. Nice layout btw.
Wow! Dream Layout... love the detail
Thanks Doug!
Really nice layout! I enjoy coming back every now and then to see what you guys are up to. Thanks for sharing.
Very nice work Josh, I'd love to visit the layout when I'm next over in the US
Cheers from Melbourne Australia
Give me a holler if you're ever stateside. Thanks for watching! - Josh
In 1994/95 I lived in Swannannoa (East of Asheville) and railfanned from Asheville to Old Fort many times. I chased and rode the N&W 611 steam excursions through there, too. I've driven under the small bridge you modeled at The Loops. There are several tunnels between Asheville and Old Fort. I've hiked the tracks and actually walked through all but two of the tunnels. The first tunnel from Asheville is about a quarter-mile long - too long to walk through safely. The last tunnel on the line I never found until one winter day when the leaves allowed a view of one end of the tunnel. One short tunnel is the subject of local art for sale in the shops on Black Mountain.
And, I'll never forget the smell of the wood chip pulp plants West of Asheville.
I know the actual amount would be impossible to figure out but if you were to estimate the dollars that have gone into this layout/collection over the years how high do you think the figure would be?
At 21:40 i see mario in the top left corner lol.
At this point, it’s basically real life
21:41 I saw Mario don't think I didn't.
That was a great tour with wonderful narrative job. That’s some layout.
Wow! Josh, You and your dad own a spectacular layout and have done. a fabulous job with the help of friends along the way!
Could you make a video in the future explaining in detail about the Digitrax setup and how you have it wired?
Haven't thought about that one, but that's a great idea for a video. I'll add it to the list. Thanks! - Josh
One of my favorite parts of the layout is Asheville yard. I loved the yard job video from the east end of the yard but I found some of the switches and track formations on the west end interesting, if you could make a video of a yard job working the west end that would be amazing.👍
Awesome, you guys have done well, Too bad its not N scale LOL. I live in Virginia Beach, not sure how close you are but I would love to see it in person if you ever allow open houses? Thanks
Just a wonderful layout , incredible detail my friend 👌
Hello, how are you? Excellent video and what a beautiful model. Congratulations!!! I really liked the layout because you knew how to make the most of the space you had and also the organization of your studio. Very good!👏😃
Wow, I have been to some of those scenes in real life! I filmed the inside of that caboose sitting by the station. That is in one of my videos from when I visited Asheville and the loops
Hey Jaw Tooth
I would like to know how you control all the locomotives and pushers when they're in different directions?
Josh you and your dad are AWESOME modelers.... I have been watching you for almost Ten years. I know I went back too watch from the beginning when I found you guys channel. I could watch you all everyday for hours without a break! It really is a beautiful layout. As always, I look forward to any new video brother. God bless YOU and your family! - Gary
Gary, thank you so so much! Always encouraging to know that our layout and channel has been encouraging to others. Take care, and God bless. - Josh and Tom
I have a question with the digitrax system can you run dcc and dc trains at the same time?
Only one dc at a time. The rest dcc. I believe that is true of most systems.
Tom
Great video! Amazing layout! Definitely want to see more on the ctc part.
Imagine having such an awesome relation with your dad. Thats the best part of all of this. Cherish these moments.
Stunning work.....love your work bench its so tidy.....
Thanks Josh! Your Railroad is sincerely becoming one of the best I've ever seen! It's obvious that you've put a lot of love into it! It is a true inspiration for all of us who have not had a chance to build something this complete but dream of doing so! It's a simple railroad, but has amazing amounts of flexibility and staging, on par with much bigger layouts! It must be really fun to do operating sessions! Again thanks so much for sharing!
This layout continues to be a huge motivator for me to start my own layout up again. Amazing work to you and your father.
That means a lot, and is the whole reason that we share our videos. Thanks! - Josh
Just stopping by for some drooling. Extra foam for me, lol. I cant help but notice that some of the industry track looks very beaten and rough, This is something rarely seen, does it cause any operating issues at all or was it difficult to get the effect without causing problems?
Just when I thought you and Tom couldn't improve on this awesome layout you fooled me again with you both having a keen eye for detail, it's just beautiful. I do wish you would show us how you do your ground throws with the orange handle and also tell us where you found your kudzu. Thanks for a extremely job well done on the layout, keep up the super fine job!
Thanks David! My dad and I are reading your comment together, and are so appreciative of your continued encouragement. I believe the Kudzu is part # 1554 made by Heki (ordered through scenic express). It comes in a matt that you just unfold and lay over the scene! Hope this helps :) - Josh
@@nsmodeler24 Thanks Josh!
@@nsmodeler24 Thanks, just ordered some.
ANOTHER GOOD VIDEO VERY INTERESTING AND IMPRESSIVE JUST WONDERFUL LAYOUT AWESOME NICE AND VERY COOL 🤌👌👍👍👍👍👍👍👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾NORFOLK SOUTHERN RULES. IT'S A VERY GOOD LOOKING LAYOUT AND A CREATED WITH YOUR FATHER AND IT SHOWS IT WILL ALWAYS BE JOBS AND IMPROVEMENT THINGS AND JOBS WILL POP UP AND ITS A GREAT JOBAND A TRUE JOY REMEMBER THAT NORFOLK SOUTHERN RULES AND A TRULY WONDERFUL RAILROADING HISTORY. AN AMAZING AND AWESOME LAYOUT. 👍👍👍👍🤏👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👌👌👌👌
Great layout Josh!!! One word to describe you and your dad's layout "Awesome". You guys are very inspiring for other modelers!!! Thanks for the tour!!!
Thanks so much for the kind words! Means a lot to us, and thanks for watching! - Josh and Tom
I like the ditch lights dimming when flashing in the opening scene. It's just that extra touch of realism that really stands out.
Wonderful video. I've enjoyed many of your episodes as you and your Dad have built your RR. And it was good to meet you in person on the Fall River Division.
For spring switches, see Andy Sperandeo's Workshop Tip on page 24 of the Feb 2011 Model Railroader magazine. Free moving points (easier with a purchased switch vs. handlaid), a dead frog (no problem with modern diesels), and a long thin music wire (0.012" dia. or so). Check operation with your lightest flat car, weight if necessary, and you're in business.
Jim
You should paint an AC6M to this paint (NS moving the weight of the world)
Wow what a great layout. The attention to detail is awesome. I would love to see it in person. Your narration in your videos are great. You and your dad have done a superb job.
Absolutely Beautiful!
Are the cars 1/64 scale like Hot Wheels, Matchbox, etc.? They look great. 👍🏼💯
There is a large assortment of brands that make 1:87 scale vehicles for HO layouts. Herpa, Brekina, Wiking, MotorMax and NEO to name a few. Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars are a bit large for HO, they are closer to 1:64 I believe
Ummm... NSmodeler24, I didn't like the way you said a bad word before the 23rd min of the vid. You didn't cuss AT ALL in alot of your videos. But this time you did. Just try not to cuss again, plz.
Brilliant modeling. Tree kits? That’s a level of realism I can’t fathom. I can’t even imagine the amount of time, money and knowledge that went into this pike. I reckon a layout like this is never done. To borrow from Chief Brody in “Jaws,” I think you’re gonna need a bigger house. I love the guitar soundtrack. Who’s playing?
Josh, I didn't catch it? But what is the estimated size dimensions of the room, the layout is in?
Also, what's your diesel roster (collection) size up to now?
Awesome 👌 layout, Josh and Tom.
Looking forward to some more Utah Belt Line, layout run-throughs.
I know the trains are expensive but what about the scenery for the layout? I’m new to model railroading.
Thanks, Josh, for the overview of the layout .......... very impressive! You and your father have done a magnificent job of modeling a portion of the NS in HO scale. There is so much beautiful detail throughout the layout ....... I especially like the old retired track through the road crossing at Louisiana Avenue. Very well done and keep up the great effort! Mike
Mike, Thanks so much for the kind words. The Louisiana Ave scene is one of our favorites as well! - Josh
21:41 wait a sec that's Mario!
cool video of the layout too haven't seen an in-depth tour of the layout before.
Did you hear about the NS sd80mac’s being sold, so sad 😭
Definitely a bummer. They live on in the Asheville District!
Wish I caught them more
You and your father have created a great model railroad. My one very mild criticism is that the scenery is too perfect. For example, while you do have a lot of difficult to model kudzu ("the vine that swallowed the south"), I didn't see one tree that the kudzu had killed or one power line pole in danger of being pulled down by kudzu.
HO Scale Norfolk Southern locos... How much are those?!? I bet those were a pretty penny!!!
Nicely done...
You should have 611 and the southern heritage pull a train like in 2016.
I live in Marion but work in Old Fort. I work at a factory there that makes automotive parts. NS brings us hoppers full of pellets that we use to coat the back of our automotive carpet. A long time ago we used to ship out everything via rail but now we just use NS to bring us the pellets. There used to be a set of tracks running in the building to shipping docks. The docks are still there but the tracks are torn up. The hoppers located right outside of the facility.
VERY GOOD AND INFORMATIVE THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO AND YOUR INFORMATION AND THOUGHTS AND COMMENTS. VERY NICE LOOKING LAYOUT ROOM SO MUCH BETTER THAN MINE. YOU AND YOUR DADARE MASTER BUILDERS. VERY GOOD INDEED. JIM KAMMERER OF PHILADELPHIA PA 👌👍👍👍👍
Hello. My son and I are modeling Southern Railway from Linwood to Iman yard. I must ask how you modeled the signal bridge at Biltmore. What brand did you use?
Awesome layout I have been inspired by your layout and pretty soon I will be building a 54 foot by 12 foot layout in a house trailer I got a couple years ago my layout will be showing a CP route in Alberta Canada layout has some old style buildings like wooden grain elevators and Stations so looks like the 1950s And the trains are modern 2011 to present it will be cool to get started you and your dad are so talented it’s amazing
The LeMasa Model Railroad club has a video explaining how they built spring switches. You might want to check them out.
Excellent job of narrating. Very impressive layout. Thanks for sharing.
Great layout man one of the best layouts ive ever seen alot of detail and you get into the farest detail love your layout man hope your staying and thank you for the video very educational 👍
Nice layout👍 I guess putting in a realistic homeless camp behind the Mickey D's in Biltmore would have been too realistic.
Are the Mario’s I found supposed to be Easter Eggs? Nice layout!
god dammit what's that song? I've recognized it for years, but with every video I've watched that has the song I haven't had the chance to find the name.
Edit: after so many years... ua-cam.com/video/7S-u77tlKyI/v-deo.html
There's NS 1072 and 8099 the Southern and Illinois Terminal heritage units.
From another video, it appears the paper mill at Old Fort also serves as Canton on the Murphy branch, now the Blue Ridge Southern?
I saw the word modern and was about to pass. I clicked it on, and saw the first few seconds and thought...I thought this was supposed to be a model railroad. I was blown away. Awesome layout and A great description.
Wow! What a super cool layout. Great work, Great video. Thank you for sharing, Russ from Oregon
Very nice railroad. You are doing a super job on it. Love that it is a father/son layout. I wish that just one of my kids or grandkids had taken an interest. Thank you for the tour. Best, Andy K.
Disappointed from the off, very first train shown, obviously empty, no driver or locoman in cab, so despite what else you may have done, ghost trains do not count. In fact there are no people anywhere, so false representation. Gave up at ten mins.
Very nice build -- you couldv'e built a real RR with all the time/$$ you must have put into this awesome model RR :)
the track at the cement plant is half destroyed, suppose that's prototypical 🤣
a "Knight industries" truck is missing at 16:38
supermario kart at 21:41 🤣
1:04 looks like dale jr and tony stewart stopped for coffee
Very nice layout. I bet it's fun to operate. Vice that your working with your Dad. My son doesn't like trains.
Fantastic layout and modeling, and excellent videos. Thank you for sharing!
I love your layout and videos man!
BEST HOBBY IN THE WORLD YOU AND YOUR FATHER ARE GREAT MODERS.😷😷🙏🚂🚂👍👍👍👍👌
I grew up in Lambert's Point, Norfolk, Virginia.
This is awesome.
Wondering if you tried pushing or pull springs. Pull type could be very fine.
Nice work.
What's the intro music? It sounds super familiar, and makes me think of trains, but I can't place it X)
Do you have a diagram of this layout you can make available?
Excellent work, very inspiring. Love it.
This layout is a real labour of love, and the results are amazing! I have been a fan for a few years now, truly inspirational modelling ! 👌👍
Thanks Matt! Means a lot :) - Josh
Absolutely fantastic. Very inspirational 👍
Awesome video I am so grateful you are part of my community keep up the good work
