  • Social Democracy and Democratic Socialism…Are they the same, or are they different? In this video we’ll be comparing and contrasting core philosophies, economic systems, the role of government, welfare, and examples between Social Democracy and Democratic Socialism.
Social democracy advocates for a mixed economy, combining market-oriented capitalism with social policies aimed at reducing inequality and ensuring social justice. Its core philosophy is to strike a balance between the private sector and the government's role in promoting welfare.
Democratic socialism seeks to transform capitalist societies into socialist ones through democratic means. It advocates for the redistribution of wealth and democratization of the economy, where workers have a greater say in decision-making processes.

Because the name sounds similar and, at least in the United States, a Social Democrat is often accused of being a Socialist in order to discredit them. This has gone on so long that the majority of the population wrongly associate any kind of welfare or government regulation with socialism.

As a Norwegian who likes to discuss, this theme is often up. And I've always had the opinion that even though we are a mix of all 3 "sides" (capitalism, democratic socialism and social democracy) we lean a little more to the democratic socialism side. This is usually a unpopular opinion. Rarely that anyone from this country object, but often those from countries that falls strongly over to the capitalism side. (yeah, that one)
Considering the description in the video, i still say at least 50-50 ds-sd
There is one thing i have learned from this: If anyone says they know for sure which side we fall on, they have no idea what they're talking about, as there is no clear cut answer. Confusion is mandatory.

The UK government from 1945 to 1951 under clement attlee was social democracy, NOT democratic socialism, though the government aimed to "eventually" create it.
The same was true in 1964 to 1970 under Harold Wilson, and again from 1975 to 1979 under James Callaghan
All of these leaders were socialists, but the UK under their leadership was Social-Democratic

I just posted it to a Nextdoor post where someone was yet again believing that any "controlling" aspect to our lives was "communism". Pointing out that our republic is closer to a Social Democracy now than anything related to communism/socialism, I also reminded them that we live in a nation of laws, and are absolutely "controlled" by those. What you call democratic socialism, was the original definition of social democracy. With time, social democracy morphed into what it is today, which really remind more of social liberalism.
Seem like when you sit in power and constantly appease the capitalists enough that they won´t coup you, your political movement will eventually abandon the ambition for actual socialism.

No. Standard socialism is better. Socialism will never be allowed to develope simply with democratic, non violent means. Every time a socialist experiment managed to hold its ground for a while it had to employ force, since the most powerful states in History were hellbent to destroy them. We all wish the owner class would allow a peaceful and democratic transition, but its no more realistic than it once was to expect slavery to end through peaceful means alone. If you think they'd ever allow socialism to develope peacefully just look at what they did to Allende and the whole Condor operation.

In my day... when I was studying Economics.... the controversy was between Americanism, Fascism and Communism and I'm not sure I have ever understood the controversy. There is talk about raising chickens in pens without light or much space to move and how Cattle are raised and fed and I do wonder at times whether this is in the future for Human Beings. I guess it bothers me because I was once told that I was not allowed to have any friends and the reason I was not allowed to have friends is that people were afraid I would not work. At the time it was just before the Prom and I ended up working Prom Night in my Fast Food place serving burgers and such. It was a part time job... maybe 32 hours a week if I was lucky and what would be the problem of having a few friends the other 100 plus hours a week? I simply don't know if any system will make a difference in the future of Humanity or if any change will make anything better. People are talking about Capitalism as slavery but what is Communism. And even if I advocated for Communism would the "form" of Communism matter? I mean, would how Communism or Social Democracy or Democratic Socialism or Capitalism or Americanism ... would the how a system was implemented be more important than changing the system? I did not realize that I'd get the reputation for being a radical if I talked about these subjects so I always go back to freedom, Democracy and Capitalism or American Mixed Economics as being as good as any system because how the elements of an Economy are implemented might be as important as what is implemented. There are so many questions and so many people doing research and it is all valuable ... maybe we will come up with a perfect system or maybe we'll just come up with a very imperfect system but the millions of people who are suffering will have no voice and will not matter because they aren't worth anything. So even while I search for something of value I still come back to hard work and making an effort to be prosperous and successful. And if society has already decided I am not worth anything ... if the decision has already been made... then maybe my battle is already lost. There was a time when improving the system meant something to me... but it also equaled hard work and diligence. If a man graduates from High School and finds employment at $70,000 a year working somewhere such that he has a decent income and all... sure there is more to life than money but the variables are incredible. Does he have a wife and family he loves and does he like his work and is he telling us the truth when he answers these questions or is he lying because he thinks he has to lie? Is he really happy or does he just say he's happy? People can get angry with you for simply asking a question.

I sympathize with the fact you don't or didn't exactly have ideal life because of social relations and norms.
But the fact you are willing to still go with realism even knowing to admit we don't and never will have a perfect life is honorable and noteworthy.
And I want a project that could perhaps help humanity one last time.
A final ditch effort that even United Nations would have to participate in to work..
Replacement of child births with adoption
combined with adopting Protesting nature that refuses violent unless self-defensive actions.
A Common enemy is both overpopulation and underpopulation.
We reach ovepopulation by breeding and we reach underpopulation by not giving Birth.
Best before having the highest Birth months is to relocate any existing children that live in overpopulated nations to parents that are qualified for child care and want a child.
Animals have adapted this nature of taking care of other babies of different species including ours.
So what stops us from doing the same within our species?
      Sadly Ego and Pride.

Would be nice to not have to hear the platitude "generous social benefits" in each and every context where someone tries to explain the Scandinavian model. If you go to the bank and withdraw some or all your savings for whatever purpose you see fit, would it make much sense to talk about a generous bank?

In the view of educated marxists, there is a fatal flaw in each system. Social democracies fail to stop capitalists from exploiting third world labor and stealing the wealth of other nations. Democratic socialism simply never happens because the ruling class of a capitalist society never abdicate their power peacefully.
