You risked your live over serveal months, fought monsters from the human subconciounus that could easily tear any human appart, watched one of you friends almost get killed by another your friends, only to still be murdered by your enemies, were nearly sacreficed to the embodiment of death so that she could wipe out all of humanity, by someone you all trusted, learned how much shit the group supporting you and your allies were up to in the past ( Strega, enough said), and than, when you finally thought you triumphed over the embodiment of death after a sheer endless fight with seemingly no one dying, one of your own had to sacrefice themselve to stop the end of humanity. Far Cry 4. Hear me out. The developers have recently confirmed that the canon (and thus true) ending to the game is the one where you unlock it by waiting 15 minutes in Pagan Myn's dinner table. Doing literally nothing but staring at a screen for 15 minutes with nothing happening on it is the weirdest thing a video game can ask you to do as when you play video games you're either doing something, managing inventory or watching a cut scene.

My favorite weird requirement for a true ending is Bravely Second, in which after confronting the main villain, he gets away, his plan succeeds, and the world is overrun with alien monsters, the game says “congrats, here’s New Game Plus!” You then need to start New Game Plus and use a Bravely Second during the tutorial fight, causing the Main Characters from your previous, doomed playthrough to TRAVEL BACK IN TIME and use their future knowledge to redo the events of the game in a way that prevents the main villain’s plans before they even get off the ground. It’s wild and I love it.

To be fair, compared to the rest of games in this list here, Maruki's confidant is the least weird thing you need to do lol. You just need to arrange a weekly counseling session with him and maybe drop by and there before the deadline, no need to get strange items, actually temper with your save files, etc..

    • @TheBlackSeraph
      @TheBlackSeraph Рік тому +17

The main thing with Maruki is that he will often not let you visit for weeks on end, and then I believe it's the last 2(?) ranks that need to be gained in the final week before he leaves, as the last rank can only be gained on the last day IIRC. The game is also kinda iffy about whether or not you need to increase Akechi and Kasumi's ranks as well to access the third semester. I don't think you need to raise them unless you wish to max their personas out, though.

    • @R.J.Crimson99
      @R.J.Crimson99 Рік тому +16

@@TheBlackSeraph You will need to increase Kasumi's rank, but not Akechi's. Kasumi is really easy as she only has 5 stars to get her at max rank in order to get the third semester and gives out helpful moves to be more acrobatic in the dungeons. Plus she can awaken her own Persona evolving it to become stronger.
Akechi is a little bit different because you don't NEED to max him out in order to get the true ending (aka get to the final boss), but his Confidant Rank makes Akechi a much more fleshed-out character this time around compared to his Confidant Rank back in the original Persona 5 game. He does make a 1 second cameo in the True Ending, but that's nothing compared to the screen time Maruki and Kasumi gets after completely their Confidants.
And Maruki is good to manage as all you need to do is get him to Rank 9 before his final day in order to max out his Confidant Ranking. The first 2 stars are essentially handed to you for free so all you need to do is see him for like 7 times. And he appears almost all the time at the school except mostly in the summer cause the kids are on summer break. So obviously you can't see him during that time. But you can see him more in the Fall which should give you enough time to go see him before his date ends.

I guess my quibble is just the length of the game and it being an open world game. Since diving back in after about a year away from it I've been doing much better. I basically have to have some sort of plan before I start it up and I play in short bursts. It helps that I've opted to pretty much ignore the caves, catacombs, and the like unless one is necessary for particular quest. I've focused on Fia, Nepheli, Millicent, Rya, Patches, and that's basically it for the NPCs. I honestly totally forgot about Sellen pretty early on, because I do use spells or anything like that. Whoops, lol. I only did Ranni's quest because of the boss fight, the Moonlight Greatsword (that I don't have the stats to use, because I'm leveling up only hp, stamina, dex, and strength), and because it's tied in with Fia's quest. I honestly can't stand Ranni. I've had a beef with her ever since she butted into the fight with Rennala. I'm doing Fia's quest because the Duskborn ending is the one I'm going for. Thankfully I've maxed out my Bloodhound's Fang now and my Mimic Tear. I want to go get Black Knife Tiche's ashes too since she might be useful for certain bosses. I think Cave Story's true ending deserves a mention. It's not necessarily the weirdest path, but the game's approach to a true ending requires a lot of shenanigans. There are things you need to do, things you have to avoid doing, and a wild, long run & gun sequence followed by the final final boss. It's less weird and more *specific* things you need to do/not do to see the true ending.

Spoilers for those not in the know:
      - You can play the game as normal UNTIL you've defeated the boss called "Monster X". This is where the first step towards (or away from) the true ending happens.
      Exact spoilers below.
      - After the boss room, you'll enter a room with a drop and see Professor Booster fall down below. If you drop down to save him, you'll get a prototype jetpack, but he dies, and you've just locked yourself out of the true ending.
      - Instead, you need to cross the gap WITHOUT the jetpack. This can be done with the recoil from a Lv.3 Machine Gun, or with a precision running jump (look for a small red mark on the ground).
      - Then, before challenging the "Core" boss, look for a sparkly item along the floor to collect (it _won't_ appear if you received the prototype jetpack). You will need it to take Curly with you after the boss battle.
      - Assuming you brought Curly with you, there is a small cabin in the Waterway you need to stop at to repair her. It's a tricky jump but if you make it, you'll find everything you need inside (just make sure to take her with you again before you leave).
      - If you did that correctly, when you reach the Plantation you will find Curly awake but she has amnesia. Follow the rumors to find a special mushroom to give to her, and she'll explain the backstory behind the two of you.
      - After defeating the gauntlet of final bosses and destroying the Core for good, during your escape from the island there is a building with the last save point inside it. If you did all the above steps, there will also be a hole in the floor dropping you into the secret area you need to clear to actually _get_ the True Ending.
Fun fact: Physical editions of Cave Story come with a retro-style printed manual, which includes the complete instructions on a "secret page" (the letters are printed on both sides of the paper, so you need to hold it against a light to read it).

It ensures the game can be played if the servers go offline (or you just don't want to connect), but it does mean the 'help with save file' feature is a bluff: Even if you don't, every player will get 'help' from something, even if it is a default set of names. That said, if you DO play online, your save file name DOES populate to a list that CAN be pulled by other people, so there is that.

    • @KrimsonKattYT
      @KrimsonKattYT Рік тому +5

You don't need to max Adachi's SL to see the true ending of Persona 4 Golden. Heck, the "true ending" doesn't require ANY SL to be maxed, just one of them to be maxed and since Teddie always ranks up via story progression, you'll always have at least one SL maxed by the last day.
If you we're aware, here are the ACTUAL requirements to get the true ending in P4G.
1: On December 6th there will be a major story cutscene. The game will warn you about this right before it happens. But basically there will be a guy who seems evil and you have the option of indirectly killing him. Say no. This alone locks you out of the worst ending. Then answer 7 further dialogue options correctly. The correct choices should be pretty obvious minus one of them, being "[spoiler name]'s true feelings." I got it on my first try without a guide but vaguely knowing what I should do from UA-cam videos. Fail any of the dialogue prompts and you'll get the bad ending, but you can just reload your save and try again.
2: The next check is on December 7th. After the cutscenes you will have to correctly select who the culprit is. (the game has a murder mystery theme) You have three options, and if you were paying attention and ESPECIALLY if you're genre savvy it should be pretty obvious who the killer is. Select the correct killer and you'll be locked into at least the good ending as long as you complete the December dungeon in time. You have 3 chances to guess correctly, and guessing incorrectly will give you hints. Fail 3 times and you'll get the same bad ending as failing the prompt on the previous day.
3: As long as you complete the December dungeon by the December 24th, you will be locked into the good ending. In the original Persona 4 on PS2/PS3 the game immediately skips to the last day (April 3rd I think) after that dungeon, but in Golden you get an extra 2 months, January and February, to finish up any side quests or SLs you missed previously and get each characters 3rd awakenings. Though it's actually only 30 days of gameplay due to you being sick for most of the first half of January and a time skip to April and the last day happening on February 24th.
4: Then on the final day after you say goodbye to every SL you maxed, you have the choice to head home. DO NOT. This will cause you to get the standard good ending and lock you out of the true final dungeon and true final boss. After you refuse to hear home return to the Junes food court. Do this and you will be locked into the true ending.
However, there ARE bonus cutscenes you can unlock if you finished certain SLs. Getting Adachi to Rank 6 unlocks additional story cutscenes involving him, and will max rank on the last day immediately after being locked into the true ending route.
Completing Marie's SL before you complete the December dungeon will potentially unlock a bonus dungeon and secret boss involving her. To unlock this bonus dungeon you must not only get Marie to Rank 10 before December 24th at the absolute latest, but also visit the Velvet Room on January 1st and request that Elizabeth "look for Marie." Saying no will lock you out of the bonus cutscenes. After saying yes you'll see additional scenes throughout January and February discussing Marie's whereabouts and on February 23rd, one day before the time skip, you have ONE CHANCE to clear her dungeon or she dies and you get locked out of the bonus cutscenes. Finishing her dungeon and defeating the boss will permanently unlock the bonus epilogue (sometimes refered to as the "golden ending") and unlock additional cutscenes during the true ending revealing more of the lore. January/February, Marie and her content, and Adachi's SL and bonus scenes were all additional content added in Golden. In the OG P4 it just skipped straight to the final day after the December boss.
Also, if you are on NG+ you can fight Margaret in a secret boss fight if you have met certain conditions including 1: beaten every optional boss shadow before you clear the December dungeon 2: have maxed Margaret's SL before February 23rd/the December dungeon (if you're playing the OG) 3: are locked into the true ending route 4: Re-enter the Velvet Room immediately after getting the Orb of Truth and BEFORE talking to a certain NPC and talk to Margaret to unlock the fight 5: Once you've unlocked the true final dungeon head to the Heaven dungeon to fight Margaret. Beating her will give you important series-wide lore.

@@TheBlackSeraph Yeah but the golden ending and the true ending are completely different endings, though the "golden ending" (I prefer to call it the "golden epilogue") is more so an add-on/expansion of the true ending rather than being entirely it's own thing. So saying you need Marie for the "true ending" is technically false as unlike Persona 5, the true ending of P4 wasn't added in the updated re-release. Golden just added more context to the true ending via Marie's arc and how she connects to the true final boss. Honestly Golden has one of the BETTER additional content of any of the Atlus re-releases. Compared to stuff like SJR which outright retcons the original story into some weird time travel plot it's god-tier. Marie isn't even a bad character, it's just that her haters REALLY don't like Tsunderes.

I feel like Persona 4 Golden has its own weird way of getting the true ending. When it comes to the base portion, you have to convince three of your teammates to not put the guy who put Nanako on the brink of death and is clearly a little bit of a loon in the TV to die.

That was already a thing in the original version and it only leads to the good endings. For the true ending you have to completely ignore what the game tells you to do, talk to some specific people, go to a place that has no point at that time and call all of your friends only to unlock an antire new Dungeon and the True final Boss. All of this on the very last day of the game when you main misson is to just say goodbye to everyone.
And for a nasty little tidbit, if you get the Namatame thing wrong and can't convince your friends not to kill him, Nanako dies too, Teddy just vanishes and no one shows up when you leave.

I 100% agree that the two scenes where you just NEED to know to press x in X-2 are obscure to the point of being ridiculous, but in fairness to "needing to watch EVERY cutscene, which is tedious" bit... this game actually technically has like... 140-ish % completion. You only need 100 to get the perfect ending (assuming you knew to press x in those scenes and therefore get the GOOD ending). You really are meant to "complete" this game through TWO playthroughs, since you can new game plus and carry over your completion percentage. There's a major choice at the beginning of chapter 2 which drastically alters the story and events of two locations in every chapter carrying forward, which is where all the extra story completion points come in. Just make the different choice on your second playthrough and you're actually free to skip the occasional scene or miss some stuff outright. Between both playthroughs as long as you at least VISIT every location each chapter, odds are you'll get enough points. If anything, it's nearly impossible to 100% the game in ONE playthrough, even if you do everything right. Even painstakingly following a guide, you'll probably end up 1-2 points short - and in fact, depending on which side you choose in chapter 2 you literally CAN'T get to 100% in your first playthrough.
Another "fun" obscure way the game can screw you out of points? There are several points where you have to sit and listen to Maechen, the lore and exposition guy, talk for minutes on end. You're given multiple chances to tell him to keep going or ask him to stop, but the correct choice is to DO NOTHING. Even if you're wanting to hear more, you miss out on points by INTERRUPTING him. Instead, just put down the controller and let him drone on for several minutes.

Triangle Strategy also has a bit of weirdness, it's already a game where some of the decisions are particularly grueling, forcing you to choose between your friends, or two equally terrible decisions, in branching paths that lock you out of the other path until NG+
    SPOILERS
To get the true ending you have to do a lot of things a normal player would do (avoid burning your own kingdom, defend the innocent and persecuted, and visit your father when asked) but you also need to implicitly aid an illegal smuggling trade instead of trying to expose the very creepy smuggler. If you decide to be honest (usually a good tactic in JRPGs) and gain evidence to expose the smuggler instead of being cool and just smuggling the goods, you'll lock yourself out of the true ending.
To be fair, the final battles of the true end have a steep difficulty curve compared to the other ends, so it's easily possible that the developers wanted you to go through the other endings first and build your party before tackling the true end.

I saw someone else mention Cave Story, which is kind of amazing in the amount of necessary shenanigans. Loved that game. I'm also reminded that the "true ending" of Hollow Knight (well, one of them, but the main game non-DLC one) takes... a lot of work, haha. (Spoilers ahead.) To get it you have to defeat the _real_ final boss of the game, the Radiance. In order to fight the Radiance you have to first reach the standard final boss fight by killing the three Dreamers, which makes sense. Before going to the boss fight though, you have to gather 1800 Essence with the Dream Nail to Awaken it, then visit two extremely out of the way areas, speaking to the White Lady in the Queen's Gardens to get one half of the Kingsoul, and then visiting the White Palace to get the other half which is located after a ton of quite difficult platforming (there is a non-mandatory sub-area of the White Palace called the Path of Pain which is _sarcastically_ hard). After getting the two halves, you then have to enter the Abyss while wearing the Kingsoul charm and smash through the floor in a particular spot in order to find the Birthplace, where after navigating a maze and killing a bunch of enemies you get to do another long platforming section before transforming the Kingsoul into the Void Heart. After all of that, during the standard final boss fight, the character Hornet will grab the boss to allow you to strike it with the Dream Nail and enter into his dreams, where you get to fight the Radiance -- basically, you decide to duel what looks like the Sun at first glance but turns out to be the manifestation of an infection in the shape of a forgotten moth-god. The fight is a long and very difficult struggle combining both super high intensity combat and intricate platforming, and every time you lose you have to start over from outside the "normal" final boss arena and fight through him to get to the Radiance. Oh, and with the Godmaster DLC, they introduced extra hard versions of all the bosses, including the Radiance, taking the form of Absolute Radiance who is, to reuse a phrase, _sarcastically_ hard and only possible to fight after a boss rush of 43 of these extra difficult bosses. Each attempt takes 45 minutes to an hour to complete, and there will be *many*. Luckily they also have the possibility to practise each boss fight on their own in a special hall, but goddamn is it a test of endurance.

Well, while the part of Persona 5 royal's true ending is technically correct, there's slighly more to it.
Because: since it´s the enhanced version of Persona 5, you have an additional requirement to it, and even ANOTHER additional requirement if you want the full extent of the royal true ending (yes, there are multiple versions of it, with only ONE of them showing the full extent.
In order to get the full extent, the first requirement would be to (as it´s been said), max out Maruki's confidant before the deadline.
On top of that, if you want the small bonus-scene, you´ll also have to max out the Justice-Arcana AND pick the correct option during one of the conversations somewhere in the middle of the confidant-progress.
ADDITIONALLY: you must reach the og true ending in the first place, which is one dialogue-choice before the og path splits up into the bad, neutral, good and true ending and THEN:
AFTER the og true ending concluded, you must yet another time give the correct response to a question.
While failing the Justice-Arcana only results in a slight difference in the final cutscene, failing ANY of the other checkmarks will result in a different ending. And the amount of possible endings is HIGH.
If we consider any game-over-screen that brings you back to a previous checkpoint or save, that would be:
-failing to aggree to the "contract" at the beginning of the game (the first thing you do when starting the game)
-missing a deadline for a palace
-giving the wrong answer in the final dialogue before the game splits into its different endings (this is 2 alternative ways to get the bad ending)
-giving the wrong anser in the following dialogue if you are on-route to the true ending (splits into 4 different endings)
-failing to get Rank 9 of the Counsellor arcana before November 17th
-failing to get Rank 8 of the Justice arcana before November 17 (that´s the minimal different bonus-cutscene you miss)
-accepting the offer you get on either January 9th or February 2nd
    -dying (yes, that´s a seperate ending-cutscene)
This brings us to a total of 9 total endings if you account for all variations

Another one is Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer. You need to find 3 mask fragments scattered throughout Rasheman in order to get either the 'perfect light' or 'perfect dark' ending. Yes, MotB actually has *two* 'true' endings, depending on how much of a monster you decide you want to be.

To Asura’s Wrath’s credit if I remember right it wasn’t originally planned to have to buy a dlc for the full ending. There was originally going to be a sequel but when the game didn’t perform well enough for that they instead adapted the plans for what would have been the sequel into the dlc so they could tie things off properly.

You can totally ignore both of em, actually. You only need to max them out for their Third Tier Personas, Yoshizawa's Showtime with Joker, and Akechi's cameo in the ending. It's only Maruki who needs to be maxed out for it to happen, but it's a SUPER common misconception that you need to do all three.

So to get the true final boss of Octopath Traveler, you have to complete two seemingly unrelated sidequests then backtrack through an area you have no reason to go to, talk to a mostly ignorable NPC and suddenly wow! You've unlocked another whole boss and finally you can work out how all eight storylines tie together. How anyone worked it out without a guide is beyond me.

Not sure if this counts, but if you want the best ending with the biggest fireworks display featuring a Star in Super Mario RPG for the SNES and its recent Switch remake, you have to buy 5 of the Fireworks item from a random mole in Moleville and keep them in your inventory through the final boss fight. Especially since the Fireworks are very expensive and only explicitly said in-game to be used as a trading item for the Shiny Stone to fight Culex, it's rare anyone would find this out on their own.

If you tell her the truth she accuses you of lying, but lying requires you to admit to a bunch of stuff that makes you look like a jerk.
