I have this Chinese ETA movement in my Noob V8 submariner replica. It worked for 5 years 24/7 on my wrist. Now it’s being serviced at €200. The watch smith said it’s worth the effort as the movement is comparable with the original.

People fall in love with the history of a watch and logo and branding it's everything. In actuality if the Swiss were to put out the cheapest watch that they can produce and stamp Swiss made on it, itWill always command a greater price over a watch that might be a much more higher quality watch but the fact that it says made in China it automatically devalues that watch. My take on it is that the Chinese are quite capable of producing high quality things if paid a fair price. But if you pay them to produce a cheap $10 watch well that's what your gonna get. I have had some Chinese watches and mostl kept very good time.

The teeth aren't cut as well as ETA's. We also don't know about the metal quality, spring life, how precisely the movements were oiled, how old they are (oil ages), how well they were stored. I hope China do well and make some better watches. ETA movements are the lowest rung of the Swiss ladder these days (30 years ago there were lower quality Swiss movements that this). A good star perhapst, but now it is time to hand finish some supremely high quality China designed movements. With labour so cheap in China, and clearly no shortage of people who can assemble watches, some genius Chinese designer should produce a real work of Chinese art, and get it made by the best of the best.

Still ppl willing go for the brand for the gurantee quality control over the cheaper China made, although they perform almost the same. In fact ppl believe in “swiss made” quality. Even though the China quality up par and beyond Siwss made, but China can't charge same price as "Swiss Made". Let say if the product almost same price CHINA vs JAPAN, I believe people will still go to Japan, because of their reputation.

In China the public pays extra to get "made in USA" products. They have a phobia from their own products from years of inferiority. That will change over time if everyone sits on their duffs and wait for them to catch up. Catching up is inevitable so all you can do is push to constantly improve and keep it a moving target.

Sellita and Claro Semag mechanical movements are made by Tianjin Seagull and finished in Switzerland.

Equivalent Seiko movement is more accurate than Swiss. True.. Doesn't mean a $50 Seiko compares to a $10,000 Omega. Rather a $2,500 Grand Seiko compares to a $10,000 Omega. A $90 Seiko compares to a $!90 Tissot.
Same thing here, except not.. Chinese movement still doesn't have the fit and finish of a Japanese or Swiss. It took Japan decades to get there, and it will take the Chinese a while too. It will be extremely rare you will find a Chinese watch today that is anywhere close to the Japanese or Swiss in terms of accuracy.
The ETA 23 Jewel movement here, or even a equivalent Miyota can be found in $500-1,200 watches from several makers, is accurate to within and the Seagull 23 Jewel movement is found in $200-400 watches from several makers.
That is why, even on the Repica market people prefer Japanese movement over Chinese. A watch may be an ascetic, but more importantly it tells the time. If it fails it's primary function, then it will end up on the shelf and people will lose interest in Horology.

Informative and subversive -- I love it! Thanks for taking the time to show the qualitative/performative differences.
I don"t really agree with insinuations (and outright accusations) that Chinese manufacturers are ethically challenged when they reverse engineer products. It's not as if European or American companies don't employ identical tactics. In fact, that is the essence of innovation -- to copy something and make it better.
If Swiss makers spent more time and money staying on the technical tip and less on marketing, they might achieve efficiencies and/or innovations that keep competitors at bay. How old is the ETA 2824-2 anyways? Fifty, sixty years? It's crazy to think they still produce that movement compared to what seiko has produced in the same time period.
I am very tired of the Swiss hype and I appreciate that your video takes some steps to expose the fallacy that Swiss (or anything not Asian) is better. Please make more vids like this one. I have just subscribed!

    • @donaldduck7628
      @donaldduck7628 6 років тому +4

Copying is NOT the essence of innovation. They teach you that in the degraded US school system? How much more do you think the Swiss can upgrade or improve? They are already on the threaded edge, trying to stay within their own definition of "mechanical" movements. The outside of the box was already blown away with the quartz disaster. You can already buy a junk watch with 1000's of times better accuracy for a pittance. There is nowhere for the Swiss to go, or anyone else for that matter. The watch face is the only refuge left, and the reason they say it is 80% of the value of the watch. Eventually even that has its limits. And by the way, the US does not engage in wholesale theft of intellectual property. They teach you that in the degraded US school systems too? The Chinese get away with it because the Chinese government doesn't follow the IP and patent agreements they signed up with. The Chinese courts also rule in favor of their own nationals. For decades foreign companies have had to open Chinese owned subsidiaries just to have standing in the courts to try to protect themselves. I also have to love your management advice. Spend more on the technical tip and less on marketing. I don't suppose you noticed the quartz disaster that decimated the markets way back when? Oh, you weren't born then? History means nothing to you? Marketing means nothing, because you have no clue what marketing is. I suppose you throw away your watch when you get tired of it too. The disposable generation(s).

For craftsmanship that the Chinese have able to 99 % accurately copied the swiss parts, just like Indian pharmaceutical companies usually copy medicines after the medicine's patent expired, so that production is not the hardest part.

...now compare the Valjoux 77xx or the Valgranges A07.211 with their respective Asian counterparts. You won't be so impressed. A07.211 copy has 7 jewels compared to the 25 in the real McCoy. As an aside, in this vid, look at the bluing on the ETA parts compared to the Asian replica. Also look at the quality difference in the jewels on the pallet fork. The tooling marks on the base plate is also more pronounced on the Asian copy. However, at half the price ETA is gonna have to come up with some new and exciting movements. And don't hold your breath for any cheap, reliable Chinese Grand Complications with the finishing work you'll find in a Swiss factory.

ETA Movment has more precisely machined parts, therefore Chinese parts look from far distance identical, but under 10x magnification you will see a big difference in quality terms between these 2 movts. Its unfortunate that asian parts made their way every where around the world this is because the poor its getting poorer so he cannot afford to fix his watch it may lay in a box abandoned, so the watch maker is not surviving either. Unless his using after market parts which will be for both profitable for client and watch maker in these modern days, where highest quality will no longer be mandatory. In almost every industry there is situation where parts comes very often from China.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think it's Michael Hedges. Definitely sounds like Michael Hedges style.

Being in watch forums and knowing watchmakers and etc, I think that it doesn't matter how hard chinese try to do a great watch; maybe they can achieve it, but the problem is the reputation of the country, and in watch enthusiasts and connoisseurs world that is even more important than how accurate a movement is; I'm not saying this is ok, but it's a reality. China will never be respected as Swiss, Japan or Germany in the watch industry. It will never happen not even in a thousand years!.

I'm sure people said the same thing and felt the same way about Japanese products 50 years ago, and now Japan has an excellent reputation for quality goods and engineering.
You can see the quality of Chinese goods improving almost daily, they are building up their quality and research and development, and they mean business!
I'm sure European manufacturers will maintain their cachet for a while yet, but things change, and I certainly wouldn't bet against the Chinese being major players in the quality watch business within 50 years, well within if the Swiss/germans etc. continue to be complacent and the Chinese carry on pushing forward at their current rate.

I'm not just talking about the technology, China makes very good things, but the reputation as a country is a bit messy, and sadly that matters!.

OP.....What goes around, comes around.....I guess you don't know how the Swiss watch industry started. They produced fakes of English horology, which got its start by faking Italian, which ripped off Ottoman -- Which copied? Oh yes - the Chinese, who have the best claim of having invented mechanical time pieces 2500 years AFTER the ancient Egyptians.....So the Swiss are no better than the Chinese and in fact worse because they have China manufacture many watch cases and movements for them (ask yourself how the ETA movements came to be so similar) then exorbitantly over-price their products....Someone once said ""There's a sucker born every minute"....It was probably a Swiss bankster or watchmaker!

Maybe you didn't know: Swiss Pharmacy started with generics. And my granddad was a Swiss Watch maker (no joke).
