Its called a lotus flower because traditionally, you can pick up a lotus flower by its stem and twirl it between two hands (like one of those helicopter toys) and it will fly on its own. You have to unlock the puzzle by turning it upside down and spinning it by the screwed in piece (stem), just as you would a lotus blossom. That is how you unlocked the mechanism the first time if you pay attention closely.
It's called the "Lotus Puzzle" because a lotus blossom blooms twice. It gives you the first coin (when the lotus shoot comes out of the mud), and the second coin (when the flower blooms).
Watched it 3 times it never says do not shake... and also shakes it hard? ..... When? I'm gonna say shakes it briskly.. but hard? You judge harshly to say so.
It just has to do with UA-cam stats and trends. However, now that you're here I will say all of his videos are of really nice quality and authentic. I enjoy them.
Actually Japanese was based off Chinese and they have a way of writing where you would use cninese characters with japanese characters so yeah. He thought it was chinese
Its called the lotus because the lotus always blooms twice and the second time is prettier than the first. This puzzle has the first "bloom" which is the coin with the hole. And the second "bloom" which is prettier than the first is the second coin.

Reading through some of the comments and my own research, I'm piecing together some hints shared by other people regarding the "reason" behind the name. Kelsey Megan mentioned twirling it between two hands to make it fly - there are martial art movements called the Lotus Spin where you jump in the air and put your legs in a cross legged position while spinning in the air. I take it to depict the way that the lotus can spin and fly in mid air if you twirl it, hence the spinning action required to solve this puzzle (maybe). Also as a few people have pointed out, the first coin that came out is a Japanese 5 yen. The image on the 5 yen is a rice plant, which is planted in water. The second coin is a chinese 5 jiao, which is something like a 50c coin, and the image on the back of that is of a lotus. After looking for info on the lotus I found that the lotus (also grown in water) grows on a rotation cycle along with rice plants (the 5 yen). The lotus is harvested in July and the rice can then be planted in the same field, forming a rotation and making good use of the field. Perhaps the spinning action also represents the rotation of crops? I'm just making some educated guesses here. Btw awesome puzzle, and new subscriber :)
I have no idea how I ended up here but I really liked this! I find even the simplest of these puzzles impossible to it was very intresting to see your approach to it! You have a very nice informative layout of your videos
I keep coming back to this video, and it never loses its tranquility and finesse. The music and light clinking of the puzzle is just an amazing combination
I kept waiting for you to spin it the other way, not flat on the table, but holding the screw-in post and dangling it to spin; this would give the illusion of a lotus flower viewed from above. Then even if the coins are discovered and removed, the box is still "hiding" a lotus flower. I feel like after the second coin is out the weight would be balanced on both sides of the pin to help the box spin evenly... But there's no way I would have gotten that far to try it myself. Lol
I was watching beauty tutorials, then I was looking at fire ants farming and escaping fire ants , and now I am here.. Not sure how I got here, but this was super interesting!
That moment when the music stops and you start the timer again, telling us "nope, we ain't done with this thing" It had a sort of, cinematic quality to it lol
Have you ever thought to yourself while watching his videos "Come on Chris it's obvious that you have to do this or you have to do that" and then he tries it and it doesn't work. Then you just sit there and think how bad you would be at solving puzzles. Because I do that a lot
If only I can post a screen shot of what time I'm watching this 😂 we're the same, and guess what, I have to wake up early while I'm here commenting on YT upon done watching a vid like this 💀
I don’t see how people have the patience to do these things If I was doing this 5 mins in I would’ve yeeted it at a wall or something Edit: thank you for the likes 😄

It's not about being patient, it's about seeing the fun in solving it. You'd probably be thinking you have other things to do that you'd consider more fun or fulfilling than solving this puzzle, although subconsciously.
Have you ever thought about collaborating with another youtuber (someone into metal work) to make your own puzzle box. I feel by now you could come up with something fiendish.
So I started on this one a few days ago. I got the first parts out and knew the next step had to be using the rods as a tool. I also felt the spin move was somehow part of it, but nothing worked! I fought with it for the longest time, then decided to watch this video. The first thing I noticed was the long thin pin that you were using was not part of my collection of pieces. Since I moved from the couch to the table so I could spin it better, I went back to see if i had dropped a piece! Voila! There it was between the cushions in plain view! I was able to solve it after that! So glad I watched the video or I’d still be struggling! Lol
Wow Chris, your way of analizing life blows me away. I'm really happy that I came across this channel an year ago. Your way of understanding the world has given me the tools to overcom many adversities. Thank you! By the way, you were one of the people who inspired me to study philosophy as a career!
This video is good but don't let it distract you from the fact that gru is the most powerful person in the world First according to the height of a Minion (which is 3.5 feet on average) Gru is 4 minions tall, which means he is a godly size of 14 feet tall. Second if any of you remember the original Despicable Me, you Know there is a scene when Vector kidnaps the three girls and shoots a series of heat-seeking misses at Gru, he then dodge them all. According to the speed of an average ballistic missile (1900 mph) and the size of the missile according to his ankle size, Gru can perceive and move at such a speed that the missiles only move 9.5 miles per hour, 0.5% of their original speed. Plus after this Gru punches a shark and it is paralyzed meaning its spine is probably shattered, to remind you it would require a force greater than 3,000 newtons to fracture the spine. That’s equal to the impact created by a 500-pound car crashing into a wall at 30 miles per hour. I rest my case.
Poets use lotus flowers to inspire people to continue striving through difficulties and to show their best part to the outside world, no matter how bad the circumstances may be. So, while the flower blooms it's special qualities cause us to bloom (poetic - it blooms twice). This is a revered flower with much symbolism attached in many cultures - out of the mud, stem through the water, flower opening at day break, showing both the petals and fruit at once. (I had similar thoughts but this is from yahoo answers and they put it better than I ever could)
The true reason why this puzzle is called "Lotus Flower" is, that the puzzle has two coins, old one and new one. Both of coins hidden inside puzzle are 5 Yen, but first is very very VERY old one with a hole in coin's center, other is contemporary 5 Yen coin without hole. This is reference to Lotus seed's extraordinary durability, which can last virtually thousands of years. Thus, meaning of puzzle is, "relic" Lotus seed (old coin) being planted and blooming new Lotus Flower (new coin) Ultimately, the true answer to the puzzle, in terms of puzzle's mechanism , is, a synchronicity: as second coin, is designed to be obtained through accidental, but reasonably expected event. (well, spin mechanism itself requires "expected accident" as it is expected to be solved by spinning, but requires some "luck" for actual success.) - P.S. Little tip for folks who are curious about the reason why there is hole in old coin: it is hole there to allow the coin holder to hold a coin with tiny rope. (More precisely, it was not actually a rope hole; the hole was just part of coin's aesthetic feature, which represents ancient view on the Universe: the sky is round, and the land is square. Eventually people used that hole for roping coins though.)
Sorry but you are wrong. The modern Japanese 5¥ still has a hole at its center. And it is exactly the one that the video uploader found first. The second one is not a Japanese 5¥. Not against your will of informing other people, but stop to act like you know stuff that you have not knowledge about.
@@hellspawn4654 Yen and Yuan are two different currency. The first user was saying that the two coins are both Japanese Yens. So I don't understand your point.
As someone who grew up in China, I almost instantly recognized the lotus coin as the 50 cent yuan coin, even though you didn't flip to the side that has a 5 for the camera lol. Very interesting. First unlock gives a Japanese 5 yen coin, then the second gives a 50 cent Chinese coin. I like that.
The fact that you kept messing around with this puzzle and didn't quit until you knew it's meaning says something about you. I've seen some of your videos before and you're so cool, sweet, and earnest. I love the determination (And honest frustration) of your videos. I think i'll stick around :3 (Also, Steve Ramsey the wood worker here on YT showed how to do that impossible nail through the wood thing.)
Agreed. To try, to keep trying, to stay determined despite failure and defeat, perseverance... says alot about a person. The harder the challenge, the greater the satisfaction of winning!
What a metaphor!!! Don't get distracted by decoy treasure, commit until you get to the real thing. I'm here because of the Tom Holland interview and it was SO COOL to enter into this whole new corner of UA-cam!
God I'm such a nerd. If you have ever seen or heard of Naruto: "the lotus of the leaf blooms twice!". (leaf refers to the village they reside in) Whenever you hear these words, get ready for a hype train. (The Lotus is a set of typically illegal moves as they are very powerful, but also damage the user. The "bloom twice" refers to a second state, or "final state" *spoiler* that unleashes unimaginable destruction/damage.) What I mean to say is, most would stop at the first coin. Most would see it and be satisfied, but the lotus blooms twice, and takes it a step further. For those who stopped at the first coin, they were rewarded, but those who took it further were greatly rewarded, not just in the lotus coin, but in the knowledge that they did.
It might look like Chinese because it's only Kanji, but it is in fact Japanese writing on the coin. The front of the coin: 五円 means "five yen" in Japanese. The back says: 日本国 which means "Japan", and beneath: 昭和五十八年 meaning "Shōwa 58 years". So it's a Japanese 5 yen coin from the Shōwa period. If you google "5 yen" you will find an image of the same kind of coin almost immediately. I don't actually know what the 58 years are referring to, as the Shōwa period lasted from 1926 to 1989.
Maybe you translated it wrong? I'm not doubting your skill it's just that 58 years is 1984 and unless it came from the future it cant be from 58 years after it ended And since it didn't end that year it couldn't be celebrating its end and how long it lasted But 58 seems like an odd number to celebrate(why not 50 or 60?) It might be some Japanese cultural lucky number(like 3 or 7 here) but I'm ignorant to their culture so I don't know
Adding up to this, the second coin is the 50 cents coin from China RenMinBi (aka RMB). The lotus 50 cents is actually the new version in China starting from 2000. Just a FYI
I love rewatching this episode! I always like watching that moment when you press start again knowing that there HAD to be more. Like, the definition of a puzzle solver. You’re the best man ⭐️👍🏿
I just researched them and didn't even figure that out. I just heard about how they come from often ugly ponds and they go under water and reemerge but that is not a great metaphor for the puzzle really. Yours makes perfect sense if that is common knowledge about lotus flowers.
I think this pulls more from the Buddhist symbol of the Lotus flower, which is that it symbolizes purity and detachment. If you fell for the first coin, you wouldn’t understand why it’s called the lotus, but you also would have fallen to a worldly attachment, the five yen, symbolic of industry and agriculture.
Its called a lotus flower because traditionally, you can pick up a lotus flower by its stem and twirl it between two hands (like one of those helicopter toys) and it will fly on its own.

Lol

All metal puzzles can be opened easily, a hacksaw is an amazing puzzle solver.
It's not about being patient, it's about seeing the fun in solving it. You'd probably be thinking you have other things to do that you'd consider more fun or fulfilling than solving this puzzle, although subconsciously.

I rest my case.
yes please do.
but how did you know that the minions are 3.5 feet tall?
This right here. This is the best comment.

(I had similar thoughts but this is from yahoo answers and they put it better than I ever could)
This is the first video I ever watched from you. I still come back to it every once in a while. Love your work, Chris. 😁

That was a Japanese Five Yen (basically 5 cents) not Chinese
The first one is Japanese 5 yen, the second is Chinese 0.5 yuan.
Hahah
I speak Chinese so I would know, similar as it says 日本 which means Japan in Chinese
Cool
It means Japan in Japanese too. They both use kanji.
Thus, meaning of puzzle is, "relic" Lotus seed (old coin) being planted and blooming new Lotus Flower (new coin)
Ultimately, the true answer to the puzzle, in terms of puzzle's mechanism , is, a synchronicity: as second coin, is designed to be obtained through accidental, but reasonably expected event. (well, spin mechanism itself requires "expected accident" as it is expected to be solved by spinning, but requires some "luck" for actual success.)
-
P.S.
Not against your will of informing other people, but stop to act like you know stuff that you have not knowledge about.
yes it's a Chinese coin, 5 jiao

As someone who grew up in China, I almost instantly recognized the lotus coin as the 50 cent yuan coin, even though you didn't flip to the side that has a 5 for the camera lol. Very interesting. First unlock gives a Japanese 5 yen coin, then the second gives a 50 cent Chinese coin. I like that.

God I'm such a nerd. If you have ever seen or heard of Naruto: "the lotus of the leaf blooms twice!".
(leaf refers to the village they reside in)
Whenever you hear these words, get ready for a hype train. (The Lotus is a set of typically illegal moves as they are very powerful, but also damage the user. The "bloom twice" refers to a second state, or "final state" *spoiler* that unleashes unimaginable destruction/damage.)
What I mean to say is, most would stop at the first coin. Most would see it and be satisfied, but the lotus blooms twice, and takes it a step further. For those who stopped at the first coin, they were rewarded, but those who took it further were greatly rewarded, not just in the lotus coin, but in the knowledge that they did.

🤯 OMG sooooooo true I didn’t think about it like that
You know ....
(Kushina)
If you didn’t know

Just use google
Wow
I'm not doubting your skill it's just that 58 years is 1984 and unless it came from the future it cant be from 58 years after it ended
And since it didn't end that year it couldn't be celebrating its end and how long it lasted
But 58 seems like an odd number to celebrate(why not 50 or 60?) It might be some Japanese cultural lucky number(like 3 or 7 here) but I'm ignorant to their culture so I don't know
"The 58th year of the Showa-period" or just Showa 58 I think. The Romans did their calendar like that too in the Republic Age.
Adding up to this, the second coin is the 50 cents coin from China RenMinBi (aka RMB). The lotus 50 cents is actually the new version in China starting from 2000. Just a FYI
we still use those coins in japan lol, i recognised it immediately, its just a regular 5yen coin

Lotus flowers always bloom twice. I assume that has something to do with this before watching.
I just researched them and didn't even figure that out. I just heard about how they come from often ugly ponds and they go under water and reemerge but that is not a great metaphor for the puzzle really. Yours makes perfect sense if that is common knowledge about lotus flowers.
2 coins
The whole time he solved the puzzle all I heard was Rock Lee saying the lotus flower always blooms twice.
wolfieismydog lmfao me too holy shit
I think this pulls more from the Buddhist symbol of the Lotus flower, which is that it symbolizes purity and detachment. If you fell for the first coin, you wouldn’t understand why it’s called the lotus, but you also would have fallen to a worldly attachment, the five yen, symbolic of industry and agriculture.
Guy sensei has taught me that the lotus flower blooms twice!!!
mr thicc eyebrows.
This, the holding upside down and spinning, ANd the coin all explain it as the lotus and that’s extremely cool. This lotus yielded two coins
