When my mom was in the hospital and dying, I prayed so hard for her to be healed. When she died, I went into the hospital bathroom and sat on the floor crying and praying and was telling God that I prayed so hard for Him to heal her and He didn’t. As I said that , I realize He had indeed answered my prayer by giving her ultimate healing, taking her to heaven where there is no more pain or tears.

No, because it would hurt him. I like to believe that when God says no to my prayer requests, He knows that this request may hurt me or is not His will for me. Totally. I heard a Buddhist over a decade ago pray "for the greatest good". She explained that by doing so it leaves open better options then we may not know about since God is omnipotent. I thought that was a good tagline and I include it in prayers for help or for people in bad situations.
Wonderful analogy. Often times the things we pray for can hurt us. I’ve taken to thinking about what I want before I pray for it, considering like what consequences might come, even from “good” things. Kind of like ‘be careful what you wish for’ the wish always has negative consequences. Though I would probably let him have the shiny knife 😅 I loved to collect knives when I was really young and I still have most of my fingers

Prayer has changed me so much. The rosary of the Seven Sorrows has been my lifesaver. Kept me away from serious sin, brought healing to my family, converted the hearts of those I love. Everything Our Lady promises she has done. Please consider the daily praying of the rosary. You will never be the same

This is what I have red in a book too! the book is called "The Game of Life, and it stated there that whenever you are praying for something, pray that if it is for you by divine right then you will have it (yes!) but if it is not, then you will receive its equivalent (I have something better for you). In this way, a right idea was substituted for a wrong one, therefore, there was no loss or sacrifice involved!

One day, out of nowhere, while I was washing dishes at work, I felt an extreme peace and joy, and love of God, and I heard a “voice” in my mind say, “God only says No when He has something better in mind.” I was not sure in particular what this was referring to, but it resonated as true. The very next day, after not having talked in a while, my friend contacted me and it resulted in a conversation where he rejected me for a final time. This would have shattered me but the consolation of the prior day helped. Still, I was in turmoil about it for a week, considered looking at convents. One day I was laying on my college dorm bed crying and suddenly decided to just go out, talk to people, and forget about my problems for a while instead of wallowing in it. That very night I met my future husband.
Just sequence of events. Has nothing to do with prayer or lack of it. What will happen will happen. We attribute every positive thing which happens to God and attribute every negative thing to "oh, well it is for my good" just like the Fox said "the grapes were probably sour, anyway".
I pray every morning with you Father Mike and Bible in a year! I have rediscovered my Catholic faith and you are a large part of it even though you and I have never met. It began last year when my parish priest helped me with my first confession in 30 years, encouraged me to pray every morning and I started reading scripture and praying 30-45 minutes every morning, then I discovered you and ascension presents, God must have willed it. I have missed your videos, but I keep watching out for you and today you made e video that I was happy to watch. You must be busy, but I pray for you and my fellow Bible in a year friends and I want you to know you have helped me come back to God and Jesus and Mary. Angel, our stories are very much alike! I returned to my Catholic faith after more than 30 years as well. I can't really tell you what the catalyst was but I just felt a longing for Him in the Eucharist! I looked for a general reconciliation guide online, printed it and began working through it. It bases a general look over your life and where your failings to follow the 10 commandments have led you. I was mortified at how far away I had strayed! After about 2 weeks of this reflection, I emailed a local parish priest and set an appointment with him to make my confession. It is so worth it!! It has completely changed my life!
Since praying the Rosary,I have found faith.. become Catholic and I'm addiction free..and away from all prescription drugs..also a lot more peace in life .I really feel like I've been found from being so lost in darkness..Hail Mary and Praise God 🙏🏻✝️💕..
Not the greatest source of theology (or the greatest movie, haha), but one of the musings on prayer that really stuck out to me is from the movie Evan Almighty -- God, appearing as a waiter, says to the mother character in a restaurant "When a man prays to God for patience, does he just ZAP him with patience, or does He give him the opportunity to practice patience? And when a woman prays to get closer to her family, does He just force them closer together, or does He give them the opportunity to grow closer together?" Prayer, to me, has a primary purpose of "getting in line" with God's plan. If you know a particular area in which you're lacking, prayer can be a great way to re-align yourself to God's plan to provide to you in that way, since after all, He already knew you were lacking in that area and has been waiting for you to ask for help, and now that you've prayed, you have the chance to actually be more aware of all the ways and opportunities God is providing to you to become more like what He wants you to be.
It is difficult sometimes to determine whether it is our "Yes, no, or wait" or God's. We must be certain that it is His will that is being done, and not ours. Thank you so much, Fr. Mike. God bless.

Please look up the 15 Promises Mother Mary gave to St. Dominic for those who pray the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary every day. Before immediately thinking “I don’t have time,” remember these are PROMISES given by Mother Mary! Skip a TV episode, wake up 20 mins earlier, pray at night as a family etc. Praying 3-4 Rosaries a day has completely transformed my life, and I urge anyone reading to pray at least 1 Rosary every single day.

I’m wondering if you could make a video on setting boundaries with people as a Christian. I have struggled with always wanting to help people even when it’s to my detriment and even when I’m being taken advantage of. Especially because I live in a culture where asking for money is not taboo and giving money to struggling family and friends is expected, it can be hard to say no. On top of that, the Bible talks about helping those in need and how if you see a brother suffering and do nothing to help, it is wrong. I struggle with this almost daily- finding the nuance between being compassionate and helping, and protecting myself. Could you please consider making a video on this? Our prayers unlikely change God's will, but BV Mary's prayers may change it or at least is what God wanted we know since the wedding at Cana. There are impossible cases with not much of a hope, but at the end everything goes surprisingly well, we don't know if God changes his mind, likely his teachings being perfect do not change, but Cana's wedding speaks by itself.

Father Mike, I have been struggling with this question for a long time. I have consumed a lot of content seeking to answer this question but no one has been able to put it into terms as easy for me to understand as you have. It may be that I didn't like the answer I was given. I have a friend who is suffering through a leukemia diagnosis that has come back after treatment. She's 34 and was just married last year and things don't look good for her. In my heart, I was hoping to use my prayers to try to save her. It's a helpless feeling to watch loved ones suffer, prayer may have been something I thought I could selfishly hijack to save her. I guess I'm seeing now that my will is not to be brought forth through prayer, it's always God's will, but my participation l, if done the right way, is not for nothing.
I was hoping you could do a video discussing the person of Mary, especially the saints' reflections of her. I realized that I know why we venerate her and about her role in salvation history, but I want a personal relationship with her as more than an admirable motherly figure. I want to know about how she lived the virtues, and how she, the archetype for authentic & godly femininity embodies womanhood, if she is said to have a sense of humor or a fighting spirit. I know you said that prayer changes us and not God, however, I still struggle with why ask Him for things if it's not going to change His mind? Such as, to have someone healed from something or for the conversion of souls. Thanks!
Hi Amanda. I have had this exact same thought so many times... it is comforting to know someone else (many someone else's) feel this way. I suppose the thing that we want to happen.... the healing for example.... maybe it WAS God's will for that to happen whether we prayed or not.... or maybe in praying for someone to be healed, we work through many of our fitful feelings and difficult emotions about the situation.... our fear... But I would love if Father Mike addressed this. He won't see it, though. Maybe we need to go to God in prayer with this and He will answer us. May God bless you. 💙💫✝️

I have prayed more than most ever Have And not Gotten God to do what I want so I have no confidence in My prayers . God has been telling me no on everything I've asked Him my whole Life .
lol people who ask this are really saying "why do I have to participate? just do everything FOR me God". You weren't created to sit back and be taken care of. You were created to be in communion with God and actively participate in your relationship with Him. That's what prayer is
"You weren't created to sit back and be taken care of" You seem to know more than the creator as to why we were all created! Yes, why do we have to participate is a valid question. Because we cannot see what God sees. So, placing your trust in God's will and letting him get on with it, demonstrates a huge amount of humility and acceptance to God's supremacy. Pushing us to "participate" is just like a kidnapper taking you hostage and forcing you to constantly engage with him.

on the pratical angle too, i always think that God reserves special gifts for ourselfs and others conditioned on prayer, as an encouragement to, as father mike said, getting closer to Him and experiencing change in ourselfs.

True, to expand on it, (with Hugh Ross' idea) Imagine a ball. This is time in 3d, the equator from west to east is our timeline and since it's curved all those points merge at the pole God can see all history as one moment and control all events and weave his plan through our choices.

Hi Fr Mike, thanks so much for your great videos. I’m a big fan of your messages, watching from central Africa. I’m wondering if you could make a video on setting boundaries with people as a Christian. I have struggled with always wanting to help people even when it’s to my detriment and even when I’m being taken advantage of. Especially because I live in a culture where asking for money is not taboo and giving money to struggling family and friends is expected, it can be hard to say no. On top of that, the Bible talks about helping those in need and how if you see a brother suffering and do nothing to help, it is wrong. I struggle with this almost daily- finding the nuance between being compassionate and helping, and protecting myself. Could you please consider making a video on this? Our prayers unlikely change God's will, but BV Mary's prayers may change it or at least is what God wanted we know since the wedding at Cana. There are impossible cases with not much of a hope, but at the end everything goes surprisingly well, we don't know if God changes his mind, likely his teachings being perfect do not change, but Cana's wedding speaks by itself.
Prayer can just be for solace. A connection.
We pray because God is good.

Father Mike, I have been struggling with this question for a long time. I have consumed a lot of content seeking to answer this question but no one has been able to put it into terms as easy for me to understand as you have. It may be that I didn't like the answer I was given. I have a friend who is suffering through a leukemia diagnosis that has come back after treatment. She's 34 and was just married last year and things don't look good for her. In my heart, I was hoping to use my prayers to try to save her. It's a helpless feeling to watch loved ones suffer, prayer may have been something I thought I could selfishly hijack to save her. I guess I'm seeing now that my will is not to be brought forth through prayer, it's always God's will, but my participation l, if done the right way, is not for nothing.

I was hoping you could do a video discussing the person of Mary, especially the saints' reflections of her. I realized that I know why we venerate her and about her role in salvation history, but I want a personal relationship with her as more than an admirable motherly figure. I want to know about how she lived the virtues, and how she, the archetype for authentic & godly femininity embodies womanhood, if she is said to have a sense of humor or a fighting spirit. What is she like as a friend? How do we (women especially) imitate her who is the perfection of femininity when femininity is so different from woman to woman?

I know you said that prayer changes us and not God, however, I still struggle with why ask Him for things if it's not going to change His mind? Such as, to have someone healed from something or for the conversion of souls. Thanks!
Hi Amanda. I have had this exact same thought so many times... it is comforting to know someone else (many someone else's) feel this way. I suppose the thing that we want to happen.... the healing for example.... maybe it WAS God's will for that to happen whether we prayed or not.... or maybe in praying for someone to be healed, we work through many of our fitful feelings and difficult emotions about the situation.... our fear... But I would love if Father Mike addressed this. He won't see it, though. Maybe we need to go to God in prayer with this and He will answer us. May God bless you. 💙💫✝️

I have prayed more than most ever Have And not Gotten God to do what I want so I have no confidence in My prayers . God has been telling me no on everything I've asked Him my whole Life .
lol people who ask this are really saying "why do I have to participate? just do everything FOR me God". You weren't created to sit back and be taken care of. You were created to be in communion with God and actively participate in your relationship with Him. That's what prayer is
"You weren't created to sit back and be taken care of" You seem to know more than the creator as to why we were all created!
Yes, why do we have to participate is a valid question. Because we cannot see what God sees. So, placing your trust in God's will and letting him get on with it, demonstrates a huge amount of humility and acceptance to God's supremacy. Pushing us to "participate" is just like a kidnapper taking you hostage and forcing you to constantly engage with him.
