In this 45 minute video I show you how to fit a genuine lowline VW retrofit rear camera kit to your Mk7 or Mk7.5 (Mk7 facelift) VW Golf. This process will vary compared to others on the internet as some are fitting used parts and/or looms not made by VW. Also the process is slightly different for left hand drive vehicles, primarily because the fusebox and infotainment control unit are on opposite sides, while for RHD they are both on the left (it's unusual for RHD have benefits but that's a good one!).
While this is a supposedly inferior lowline unit, it's still very good and the lack of the highline version's markers on the screen that change with the steering angle means it does not need costly calibration by a VW dealer. Also VW don't offer a retrofit highline version, just this one. FYI VW charge £605 on a supply and fit basis, if you can get this kit which is currently on back order, you can save at least half of that by fitting it yourself.
*PLEASE NOTE SOME EARLY MK7 GOLFS MAY NOT HAVE THE FACILITY IN THE INFOTAINMENT UNIT TO DISPLAY REAR VIEW CAMERA IMAGES - BEFORE STARTING THE INSTALLATION YOU SHOULD ATTEMPT TO CODE THE 5F INFOTAINMENT UNIT AS PER THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THE VIDEO - IF IT CAN ACCEPT THE CODING THEN YOU ARE GOOD TO GO*

My reversing camera (factory option on my 7.5 GTI Performance) beeps and the auto brakes stops it from hitting whatever I'm reversing into. Obvs yours doesn't have sensors so a reversing camera is vital tbh. Good work on it Andrew 🖖
Thanks! Yes those sensors I am sure have saved a few bumpers, even with camera it's still easy to think no beeps = no obstacle, so far so good though 🖖🏻
Great video again Andrew, I do like a good retrofit!😁, I once retrofitted full factory spec, genuine Adaptive HID headlights, to my halogen headlighted MK6 GTI, that was a big job with a lot of loom, and a lot of coding, and I probably wouldn’t do that particular retrofit again! I did however consider fitting the same kit as in the video to my Mk7 GTI, but as mine was also a 3dr, the amount of trim removal put me off, having now viewed your video, I probably should have done it really.👌 I personally would have replaced the drain hose though, as they go brittle, and having been removed and refitted are prone to dropping off and filling the bottom of the tailgate with water! 😫
Thanks Charles! Headlight retrofit sounds pretty hardcore, the thought of wiring up those level sensors front and back makes me feel a bit ill! I'll keep an eye on that drain tube, seemed to go back on OK with a fair bit of resistance so hopefully won't pop off but I will keep an eye out for it. I think if you can get your head around removing the side trim panel on a 3 door then it's not too bad, after all VW fit them pretty quickly in the factory - I do wonder if that clip that was bent was from the factory as there is no reason why it would be bent from removal
Fitted a highline camera to both of my Golf R's. Second car came with the optional reverse camera but I still replaced it, highline has better image quality and having the wide-angle mode is great. Other benefit is the camera can be enabled when not in reverse, so when maneuveuring the image will stay on till you reach 15mph ish.
And if you connect that cable which is as a switch on/off for the reverse camera to the rear parking sensors instead of connection to reverse light? I suppose the image will stay same as sensors? i am asking, I did not try this yet.
I discuss about that AM reverse camere.
@@Vladd3 Yeah I don't see why you couldn't rewire the lowline sensor cable to a switch rather than the reverse light
@@TomCuthbertson i was saying this because you told about some benefits between AM and OEM. That benefit with enable when not in Reverse I think can be possible also with an AM camera.
The most important difference from my point of view is the total cost for this retrofit.
L.E: I found another solution: installing a delay box enables this feature same as oem camera when you put the gear in D, the camera remains 8-10sec and it shows the image.
Did you have to calibrate the highline? and was it OEM?
@@noz3m I've not bothered either time and it's worked fine. Just used obdeleven to tell the car it's installed. The casing looks as good as OEM and camera quality is good but it's probably not OEM
One comment from me as I’m doing this job now is buy some spare trim clips. On my 5 door golf I managed to deform at least three clips when removing, and then when replacing, the trim panel that goes vertically up from sill level to rear seat top. This one was particularly troublesome!
Also good to note that if you are doing the job in separate sittings it’s best to remember that the rear hatch release will not work until the full job is done. 😂
Good tips 👍
You're a braver man than I, looks very complicated. Well done and very informative.
Thanks Steve👍Question is would I do it again...probably but I wouldn't want to do it for the first time again and film it that's for sure!
Great video - have no idea how you managed to get it done - good job all round. I'm on the verge of buying a 7.5 GTI PP with the Nav Pro, but no RVC so was very interesting in this, but I think this is too much for me - maybe I'll give it a go one day. Been using your old content on the GTI to inform the cars I'm looking at. Leather and DCC are a rare combi for sure!
Glad the vids helped with your purchase Jonathan. I guess the main message of the video is if you want an RVC it can be done whether DIY or by the pros, either way it's good value for money. Leather and DCC are indeed super rare and much harder to retrofit :)
@@volkswizard I think I could definitely do it - probably the thing holding me back is not fitting the trim back properly, or breaking clips etc, or introducing rattles. It does look very doable. If I manage to pick up the GTI that I want then I might leave it a while before I attempt it. Fingers crossed I come back to this in the future and give it a go! Would you bother with it if you already had rear sensors? Keep up the good work - am loving your content
I was taking my old car in to have a reversing camera fitted, as I was parking I backed into a concrete post. Luckily the damage was only a few mm.
Oh dear, sorry to hear that, it's all too easy
It’s the one thing I miss on my current car, an Audi S3 8v…a reversing camera. Having watched this video I’m encouraged that I could have one fitted but looking at the wiring I don’t think I’ve got the ability to install one myself…I’ll use a professional!
Keep up the good work Andrew, I’ve long been a fan of Volkswizard since my mk2 golf, my first car…i was always looking at your website in the early noughties for a mk2 gti big bumper but I was always going to be too young for insurance! 😂
Thanks Benny! Well it's interesting you liked Mk2s all that time ago and are now in an S3 8v which is in many ways the modern day equivalent. For most people whose time is precious, using a professional is undoubtedly the way to go I think. Unfortunately I don't think this video encourages much DIY but it does make the professional installer charges seem very good value for money :)
Excellent tutorial but just made me decide not diy for me, I’ll go to Redditch to get it done on my lowly 2017 1.4tsi. Liked and subbed
Redditch? That's going to be at VW Retrofit isnt it? Alex there deffo knows what hes doing.
Thanks👍
The patience you show here is miraculous- I was hoping for a plug and play solution and was even considering for my Megane as I have the 265 Cup which got the rear park sensors but not the camera the premium got but after watching this no way hose A. I’d rather repair or replace rear bumper 😝. I would have thought the wiring would be in situ and not require so much retrofitting- labour for this job would be huge - maybe just me as my AC evaporator has failed and A$6k (2k labour) quote to replace has me wishing for your skill set as dash out job 🎯👏👍🤪
I think Audi used to fit the wiring on the B5 A4 for odd things like CD changers in case you wanted to fit one but this rare. Back in the day the big job on Mk4 Golf was running the cable for your boot mounted CD changer - same old same old in many way! Importing a bumper from France and painting it in that yellow **so it matches** must cost a fair bit - just as well you've got the sensors! As for patience, this was filmed over 3 days (possibly 4 with the testing) and my patience was most certainly being tested after day 3 especially when it came to refitting the rear side panel - got better after I removed the sodding bar - should have done that before but you think it's going to be better integrated than 1 bolt each side!
Nearly perfect timing for me, I've brought a 3dr Clubsport 40th Ed (on the back of your videos) and was thinking of upgrading to a rear camera from sensors . Really helpful video on where all the clips are for trim removal and how it comes and what to take apart. At least with Mk7's all the trim is cheaply available (obv not the bespoke CSS/CS stuff) should something got busted. The only reason I say its nearly perfect timing is that deutsche-parts have sold out & can see why at that price. Shame the rattle is not solved if it was a squeak I'd say oil the good lady's earing 🤣 PS hope you never got stung by wasps while recovering the CS documents....
Ha ha thanks Steve! Only spotted the wasps when watching it back. Yeah I did retrieve it and go to say C&M bins are the cleanest I've ever seen. The only scary bit of trim is that side trim panel, the rest as you say is generic apart from the sill cover but that's hard to damage I guess. Hope you enjoy your new car, if I had to have one car, I think now it would be a Mk7 Clubsport Edition 40. As a do eveything car spec for me would be 5 door DSG buckets panroof DCC, 18s (hard choice but..), carbon steel grey or maybe white. Not exactly lightweight but one hell of a package.
@@volkswizard Good choice Andrew! That's exactly I have spec-ed mine (with Belvederes).
How do you open the boot now? The boot latch on my 7.5 is the rear emblem
The new camera is integrated into the boot latch so it operates just like the old one
Cvbs type signal camera giving?
Clever old you. Well done. My RS3 came without a rear camera, honest, and I got the dealer to fit a rear camera. It cost nearly £800 but I would hate driving it without a reversing camera.
Thanks David. It wasn't easy but right now I've got more time than money so it was worth the effort for me (just about)
@volkswizard, do you have a link to the printed instructions for this? I ordered my camera from eurozone tuning and their forum site is down which contains all the instructions. I’m also in NA with a LHD car, so I’m trying to figure out the intricacies I’ll face.
Hi Andrew great video as always can I ask which camera did you buy low or Hi as I understand there is two ? Not sure of difference? Also can I ask how much the camera was from Deusche Parts , looking to do the same on my mk7.5 GTD , just need to find someone to code it. Thanks Matt
Thanks so much Matthew! Highline or Lowline is interesting - firstly if you want a genuine retrofit kit from VW it has to be lowline. You don't get the markers on the screen that move with the steering but you do get static markers and when you learn to trust them I honestly can't imagine there is much difference. Resolution is very good and in every other way it seems to operate in the same way. Technically a difference is that it hangs off the existing infotainment control module rather than having its own module that you can read with diagnostics but again academic to end user. You can of course buy a highline emblem with camera as a part but you either need a used loom or an aftermarket loom at which point you are deviating from the approved VW route and with electronics, that's not ideal. Maybe you can buy the loom from VW also as a spare part but there would be no instructions on what goes where. There is also calibration of the markers needed on highline which is not really DIY or able to be done by most garages. Coding really is 0.01% of the whole job so don't worry about that too much until it's in. It was £261.10, they are back order at the moment unfortunately.

@@volkswizard Thanks for this explainer, Andrew. I was curious about the low and high differences and you've explained it perfectly. Now I want to clobber to death whoever specced my Mk7 even more as I've the Discover Pro 8 inch unit. Anyway, I wasn't convinced I could do it after watching Mr-Fix' video but after seeing yours and considering mine is a 5 door, I believe it'll go fine even though I never spliced wires before. I did however recently removed the hatch trim, twice, for drain tube and wiper grommet replacement after it started letting in water and found it trivial.
Can I just say how much I enjoy like really in-depth, niche videos like this? As an Up! GTI owner, doing mods like this to VWs is properly fascinating. Keep it up👍
Thanks so much Ethan ♥ Stay tuned as there might be a few similar mods to my Up! GTI 👍🏻
What a job! Looks kinda scary, but i really want to do this myself
Be brave and give it a go but only if you have loads of time as it's not a job you can do in stages very easily
Hi Andrew, wow, nice video as always, very informative! I am just wondering if you are intended to make a video of dismantling and installing the rear safety bar? With the bar, I suppose it’s really hard to load and unload luggage. I tried to loosen the net, but it didn’t work. Is removing the bar the only way to have a more spacious boot? Thank you!
Thanks! It’s too easy for a video, literally 2 bolts and it’s off, you need to unpick the net if you want it out fully though. Maybe leave net attached and keep bar in rear footwell? Huge boot then with no back seats getting in way!
Well done Andrew a very interesting video and amazing the work involved to install the camera but a great upgrade all the same hope you are both keeping well Daniel
Many thanks Daniel! All keeping well thank you, hope you are too ♥
@@volkswizard all good here thanks Andrew off to Cornwall Friday for 8 days can’t wait
No step by step, which model camera? Will it work with infotainment system in vw golf se 1.4 tsi 2013?
Great job Andrew we’ll worth the time spent fitting 👍
Thanks so much Jay👍🏻👍🏻
Great video, very informative 😎🤙🏽
Any know if i can do this with a scirocco
Does the rattle happen more at high RPM? I found on my Golf MK7.5 R it had a super annoying rattle which turned out to be the SoundAktor speaker - essentially the build of the speaker is cheap plastic which is programmed to be too loud from the factory, so when it gets loud it starts to rattle internally. Use OBDEleven / VCDS and lower the volume to 50% - rattle gone
I've switched my fake sound off and yes it did rattle, such a bad idea from VW. Sadly that wasn't it.
Rattles are very hard to diagnose especially without me describing fully it so here goes;
It's a rattle, not a squeak or creek
It's at the front of the car
It occurs when the front wheels hit an imperfection
It is evident independently on left and right side of car, you hear left more often as road edge is bumpier but hit something with right wheel and the noise occurs on the right hand side of the car (so it occurs in 2 different locations, dependent on which wheel hits). It's hard to tell when driving but I'd say it's scuttle/top mount/instrument cluster level. On 'ring trip I heard it once or twice in 1000 miles, minute I get back to my village and I hear it 3 times in 200 yds.
If the road imperfection is minor, it will be heard on its own
If the road imperfection is medium, it will be heard along with the usual noise caused by suspension compression.
I've replaced front top mounts, shocks, arb drop links.
I've disconnected ARB, no difference
I've removed front bumper and checked crash bar etc, all tight.
I've checked subframe bolts, all tight
I've removed scuttle cover and checked for loose bolts, tools etc, nothing
I've removed both arch liners, nothing in them.
Brake pads are original and are tight in calliper
Rear brace bar is tight (now)
The car looks untouched both in paint and body and not modified when purchased (rattle was there from the off) and doesn't appear to have been messed around with or taken apart.
nice. where do you find the document how to install ?
Great video Andrew, I've been looking at fitting a rear camera to my mk7.5, but I don't have VCDS, so may bite the bullet and pay someone to fit it for me. Thoroughly enjoyed the Video.
Thanks Brian. I can see why VCDS is an obstacle to DIY but it's £10 drink money for that easy coding tweak, while the physical installation is the big time consumer. Having said that professional installation fees are good value on reflection if your time is better spent doing other things. Glad you enjoyed the video either way!
I had a rear reversing camera installed on my mark8 and it works well but does flicker for a few seconds when you put the car into reverse. The installer said they do not know how to fix this but I can live with it. If there is a resolution to fix this it would be appreciated
That's unusual, do you know what they fitted? New/used etc?
It was a new unit from VW and had it fitted by vw authorised repair garage @@volkswizard
I loved watching this retrofit, having installed a rear dash cam and doing similar. Really methodical and addictive to watch, the only thing is I don’t have a Golf! But that’s testament to your great videos! Back to surfing the classifieds…!
Glad you enjoyed it, very kind of you to say what you said. It was a tricky one to film but glad it's being appreciated. Now you just need to get a Golf 😀
@@volkswizard if you wouldn’t mind finding me a mint G60 Limited, that would do nicely thankyouverymuch…!
Hi Andrew I know this is a better cheeky but do you have a copy of the instructions I could use buy or down load?
That model did it not come with reverse camera standard ?
Reverse cameras were never standard on mk7 in UK market, the last 7.5s got them though
Can the golf camera you used be used on other models? Like passat?
Unlikely
Good job Andrew, OIM as well
Thanks Alistair! Never like cutting wires as prefer plug and play but if VW says cut it, who am I to argue :)
Can this be done for Seat Leon as well? Are the parts the same?
There is a retrofit kit but it's just a normal camera, not one in the badge sadly
vagtec.co.uk/eshop/seat/leon/genuine-seat-oem-retrofit-kit-rear-view-camera-leon-5f.html
@@volkswizard thanks!
Anyone else hear a REALLY high pitch screeching?
Not my end.
I just yellt ad my daughter to stop doing what ever it is se is doing, but it was in this video 😂
Nope
No
Weird. I paused it a number of times and it stopped. Was really distracting
This is awesome. Wish i had remotely the confidence to do it. Apart from my general hamfistedness, and no experience with electrics, i'd also be scared of introducing rattle or squeaks into the interior trim. So i think i'd better keep myself away from this haha.
Thanks mooferoo! We all have our different skill sets, in the ideal world I'd be earning enough money doing something else and getting a pro to do the work for me. Having said that it's quite satisfying to do and it's nice to get to grips with your own car every so often, but it's not essential to be hands on to enjoy cars (and got to agree, adding rattles would be a very bad thing!)
Trayectory camera or with static lines?
lowline = static
Great video. I was goimg to do this to my CSS but was worried I broke something.
Thanks! It's not too bad but VW trim clips have a method and you don't want to be learning on a CSS. On plus side every piece is generic Mk7 apart from side trim panel and sill cover
Thoroughly enjoyed this video.
Thanks Alan, good to know 👍
could you share the install manual?
Don’t have it any longer but TBH it wasn’t very comprehensive
Great mod but you need to get a soldering iron and do the job properly.
I thought that but an experienced tech put me right - butt connectors are far more reliable than solder, quick google will confirm that, even NASA think so
www.reddit.com/r/CarAV/comments/qaouq3/for_those_still_arguing_about_crimping_vs/
monroeengineering.com/blog/crimping-vs-soldering-cable-connectors-which-is-best/
@volkswizard experience tells me different. It's all in the execution of the soldering and insulating materials used.
A very good effort with an excellent result. Top marks for persistence. Certainly not for the faint-hearted. Was that a factory kit as supplied to dealers or a kit of genuine VW parts assembled by a third party? If the former then it's a shame it's not copied by other manufacturers as there must be thousands of owners who would like the upgrade; myself included.
Thanks, appreciate it. That kit was assembled in the factory as is exactly as supplied to dealers. It's on the official VW UK accessory page including fitting but supply has been very poor this year so while they list it, getting it is another story.
That's what I thought, but the quality of the "destructions" made me reconsider...
Great video 👍
Hi Andrew , What are your thoughts on VW group scrapping the 5 year cam belt change on 1 July 2023 ? I run a 2019 02 Up! GTI so due in 6 months so am quite pleased and will go with the 15 year check. Just wondered your opinion on this subject. Thanks Mark.
I suspect a Dieselgate type saga was (and still may) develop about why they are quoting different times for a change between UK and Europe e.g. "Do you own a VW Group and have had a cambelt changed recently.." etc. They may still be laughing when we have to buy engines at 6 years old when it breaks :) Is 15 year check right? It really needs checking before that. Rubber cracks and the bearings can fail so there needs to be visual checks and listen out for noises every year.
Thanks for reply and did think that was a factor. Yes will have mine looked at in service intervals.
Lol ... like you would throw the book pack away
Artistic licence 😁
Very complicated process. Don't think I could do this myself. Very interesting though as I had so many problems with my dealer when they fitted it on my Mk8.
Sorry to hear that, what problems did you have?
@@volkswizard Long story. They said it would be fitted as per factory but when I went to pick it up all they'd done was place it on the rear bumper! I said that's not right and after threatening to pull out they agreed to have it done the VW way. The company they got to do it refitted it but then didn't know how to code it so had to find another company down in Surrey and eventually 2 weeks later I finally picked the car up.
Thanks for sharing the trim tips great video.
No problem!
I though most mk7 R and gti had reverse camera and dcc
Quite the opposite, both quite rare on both
Nice job.
Thanks!
Indeed very challenging .My son did he's Mk6 Gti and with the rear back seat permanently removed and 1/2, the trim gone it was a 4 hr exercise
Congrats to your son for giving it a go Ivan!
@@volkswizard He is a Sparkie so he goes hard to the point of frustration
Superb job mate ! You made that look so easy to do 👌🏻👌🏻✅
Thanks Rob👍 Long winded but not one of those job that frustrates too badly
Always great videos:) thank you for the in-depth episode you are helping so many people with the confidence of doing this themselves. Vdub :)
Happy to help JB :)
Lots of patience. Thanks, RickGTI….. 🇺🇸
Thanks Rick, patience is the top tool in the tool kit :)
Don’t think I’ll bother.
I can see why the video might have that effect Ron!
Go to whoa (excluding editing) time to do and film, Andrew?
I did it over 3 days in the end as first time to learn job and film is heavy going. I think a few hours next time around.
@@volkswizard I understand the editing can also be very time consuming. 😬 Very interesting. 👍
I was going to do DIY, after watching this. NOPE,I am cool with no camera.
I get that, TBH I wouldn’t do it again, well not film it as that makes it 2x harder at least
So much work. Not really for a novice. The factory fit works best. In fact there was a four month hold on GTI and R due to the reversing camera not being available on cars for Australia. That meant a breach of our design rules and no cars could be sold. You did well.
Interesting re design rules Philip. I think in some countries rear view cameras are mandatory for safety reasons, is that what happened in Aus?
@volkswizard yes safety gear is mandatory. Reverse cameras can save lives.
Please work on your audio. It's hard to listen to your videos with the unclear wording.
