  • In this video, we are going to be breaking down all of the features and testing out everything in the Sony PZ 28-135mm f4 G OSS lens on the Full-Frame Sony FX3. The Sony FX3 has some amazing features like blazing fast auto-focus, eye-auto focus, incredible low light performance, and a ZOOM rocker built right into the body, making this lens much better in 2021 than it was when it was first released 5-6 years ago with the Sony FS7.
    There is a lot to go over so here are the Time Stamps:

    Thanks, was waiting on this after you said something about you coming out with this vid. I've always had this on my list for documentaries, but never pull the trigger because the thing with me is the love of f/2.8, and I shoot so much at 24mm (which is about 26mm with active stab on). It is nice to have the added built in controls.

      Yes it is a very specialized lens. Definitely not for everyone or an everyday walk around Lens. Very good for those that need to zoom in and zoom in-and-out While recording, and it would be awesome for documentaries because of how smooth the zoom works, as long as you're able to get past that f4.

      Totally agree. I had 2 of these lenses at one point. I sold one and kept one, which I use all the time still! Just used it on a shoot earlier this week. I wish there was an f2.8 version. That would be insanely expensive though, because this f4 lens costs as much as an a7IV in 2023, and this lens is like 5 years old!

    Hi Ray, great video! I was wondering if you you would suggest using this lens for live-cut sports coverage? or if other, cheaper Sony power zoom lenses might suffice? (i.e. Sony 18-105 power zoom lens). I am looking for lens solution where focus does not shift while I zoom in/out with the servo. What would be your advice for achieving this on an Fs5? Would you recommend using manual focus or autofocus? Any other considerations? Thank you!!

    • @RayValencia
      @RayValencia  2 роки тому

      Hi TreeTop Media!! This lens would be amazing for sports coverage because of the smooth zooming. On the FX3 you can use the Servo zoom on the camera body with 1 finger, or you can use the Servo Zoom Dial on the lens, or the actual zoom ring. Lots of options. It is very close to being perfect ParFocal as you zoom in on a subject too. The FX3 auto focus is amazing, but I usually use this on the a7R3 for a 2nd angle. The manual focus on this lens is RARE for a Sony lens and absolutely a pleasure to use. This is completely linear manual focus and feels like a mechanical focus. The 18-105mm doesn't compare. I wish someone else would chime in here and back this up because it's great!

  • @Bo_Hazem
    @Bo_Hazem 6 місяців тому

    I think this is the perfect wedding/event lens. I usually shoot at second base ISO of 2,000 (HLG3) on my A7SIII and use a CPL to cut some highlights and tends to render the image better or even with the VND at 2 stops while my Sigma 24-70mm set to f4-5.6 instead of 2.8. When it's too dark then I go for 2.8 but keep the CPL inside my PolarPro basecamp matte box despite the 1 stop loss while manually changing WB (full manual exposure). Being internal zoom, optically stabilized, and having an insane range of 28 to 135mm is amazing. But that manual focusing system would mean I wouldn't use follow focus but use my hand which can be a bit less practical. It's still a bit too expensive despite all these years though. A new version would really enjoy some improvements though but overall I think it's perfect for 1-man camera operator. The lens itself looks pretty professional as well.
    Thank you for your amazing review!

      Hey Bo! Thanks, gosh I forget about some of these older videos. This one was fun to make. I still love this lens and I just used it a live event on the FX3 just 2 nights ago. For something like that, with stage lighting and everything the F4 doesn't matter one bit, but the zoom rocker on the camera just works out great. Plus, like you said, our ability to use higher ISOs than ever before makes this lens even better than when it was released, back with the Sony FS7, long time ago! lol. Would like to see f2.8 version of it, but it would be super expensive!

    Are there any Emount zoom lenses with mechanical focus that doesn't have the latency when zooming? I'm trying to find one for virtual production where I've got a rig setup for syncing realtime zoom and focus data to the game engine. My current lens has mechanical zoom but focus is by wire, so I'm looking for something that has both mechanical zoom and focus. So far I haven't seen any Emounts other than this one. Thanks!

      The only Sony branded lenses with mechanical focus are the 3 PowerZoom Cine lenses PZ 28-135, PZ 16-35, and PZ 18-110. And I have the Sony 90mm Macro, which I believe is the only Sony lens that has mechanical focus clutch (just like the PZ lenses have)... but none of these options will be what you need. I'd look into Cine Zooms. The Angineux EZ Mount Cine Zooms. Sigma Cine Zoom 18-35mm, 50mm-100mm. Or if you shoot in apsc mode, the Fujinon MK e-mount Cine zooms.

    Can you recommend a camera that can do zoom with a buttom (toggle, no idea what those are called on camcorders), but that can also do good depth of field? We are trying to find something that can do cinematic looking interviews with out of focus backgrounds but we also need to be able to zoom in and out during a shot... What cameras or lenses have this power zoom feature that can do a smooth zoom but also maybe a 2.8 apeture or wider?

    Nice video. Would this lens be a good one to pair with the Sony A7s3? I wish the other option (18-110) was a full frame lense. But ohh well. Also do you know when sony is going to come out with a new updated version of this?

    • @RayValencia
      @RayValencia  2 роки тому

      Yes, to be honest, I use this lens on my a7R3 more than my FX3 because my FX3 is usually on the gimbal and this lens is better for the tripod, it's beefy and heavy. Bu the a7S3 is wayy better at Auto Focus and Low-Light than my R3, so you will be in great shape with this lens! Not sure if they will update this exact lens because Sony just made a TINY little Power Zoom lens that is the PZ 16-35mm f4 (and prior to that, released a 16-35mm t3.1 PZ Cinelens). So they may go either of those routes on the updated version!

    Very nice video! I recently got an FX3 and was looking for a PZ lens to go with my FX3. I was just wondering if you've ever noticed any noise when using the rocker zoom? I saw some people say that the power zoom on the lens itself is very quiet but when using the rocker zoom on FX3/FX6 at the max speed the noise is somewhat audible. Did you have such experience with this lens? Thank you a lot in advance!

    Slightly confused about the zoom. If you turn off servo is there a mechanical linkage? Or is it always zoom by wire, even in manual mode? The reason I ask is I want to have full mechanical control for crash zooms. Thanks.

    • @RayValencia
      @RayValencia  2 роки тому

      Hey Steve. The focus has a mechanical Manual focus mode, but the zoom does not. Whether in manual or Servo zoom. In Manual is has a slight delay if you Snap Zoom. (Which I think is what I think you meant tp type by "Crash" Zoom? )

    I've been trying to have mine set up with a shoulder rig and relocating zoom control via some kind of remote but the only compatible option I found is the cheap "Sony RM-VPR1 Remote Commander with Multi-Terminal Cable" which doesn't give me variable zoom and is not super ergonomically adapted to be retrofitted on a handle. I've tried a friend's FX9 handle, which also has the Multi-Terminal connection but it does not seem to work. Do you happen to know of any other variable zoom option that works with the FX3 / 28-135 combo? Thanks.

    • @RayValencia
      @RayValencia  2 роки тому +1

      This lens is fast on auto focus tracking, even when fully zoomed in. This lens has the AF and Manual Focus clutch system, which is VERY rare in today's world of Focus by wire lenses. It seems to lose a little Sharpness when fully zoomed in, although I haven't done rigorous lens tests on it with charts and everything, so I'm only judging by using it on a regular basis. I still use it weekly! But I have the FX3, which has the Zoom rocker on the body, and I've just put in an order for the FX6 so I this lens is great for my camera systems! It makes sense on any Sony camera, but people are overcharging for these online currently. But it all really depends on what kind of material you shoot if it's right for you.

    • @RayValencia
      @RayValencia  2 роки тому +1

      Hi, H E! Very good question. This lens costs as much as an a7IV, so it really depends on what price range you're looking at, and focal range? I have super wides, like Sigma 14-24mm and Medium, like 24-70mm. If I only had thr budget for 1 lens, and didn't want to break the bank, and needed the most Zoom range with the Fastest Aperture I'd go for the Tamron 35-150mm f2-2.8. The extra light you get from the f2 would be awesome, but if you need the most affordable PowerZoom (like this lens), probably the Sony 24-105 f4.

      @@RayValencia Awesome, I didn't expect you'll reply, thanks for your valuable time bro, Btw, won't Tamron 35 - 150 mm f2 - 2.8 reduce the detailing/quality of the video due to its cheap optics? @RayValencia  2 роки тому +1

      @@he3446 Ah, ok. You mentioned economic, so I thought best bang for your buck. I personally do not own any Tamron lenses, but I've played around with that one at a wedding. So this option isn't cheap, but personally I'd go with the 28-135mm because it has the clutch system for manual focusing with the focus marks on the lens, and the zoom ring is awesome to use, manually or in Servo mode. It came out on the Sony FS7 cinema cameras, if that lends any assurance on where it falls in the Sony lens line-up. The 24-105 is all focus by wire.

    FX3 and 28-135 do you also use it on gimbal?

    • @RayValencia
      @RayValencia  2 роки тому

      Not regularly bc I have plenty of smaller lenses, but you can balance it on the RS2. The 28-135 has a tripod lens collar on it and you can balance from that point.

    I think Sony confused a lot of people by releasing a full frame zoom kit lens with the FS7. Astute FS7 owners have changed up to the 18-110mm as it is a proper S35 servo zoom. I have the 18-110 on my FS5 where the combination is a match made in heaven, especially when rigged for ENG.

    hey! I have to ask this.. does this lens reset the zoom when you turn off the camera or the camera sleeps?

      Hey Winter Kat! No, this lens does not reset the zoom or F-stop when camera is powered down. It keeps everything locked in.

      @@RayValencia let me get this clear. So, if I were to leave the lens at 50mm length and the camera goes to sleep, will it turn on at 50? unlike the sony 18-105 f4 lens. if this is true then this is awesome... also thank you for replying. was searching for the answers alot.

      @RayValencia  2 роки тому

      @@winterkat8693 Yes. I have it right here in my hands on the Sony FX3 while I'm writing you, and I can zoom in to 50mm, power off, power back on, and it will still be at the last focal length I was at, in this case, 50mm. This lens is older than the 18-105mm. It has a Mechanical Focus, or Focus by wire. It has a Manual zoom or Servo zoom. Either way you prefer to use it, Manual or Servo Zoom, it will save your last focal length for you.

      The 50mm 1.2 looks incredible. This lens has a lot of great uses though. f4 vs f1.2 is a big difference, so it depends on what you need. I just bought the Aputure 60X. Very cool and affordable smaller light.

    I can't decide between this or the Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8 ): I do stills and video

    • @RayValencia
      @RayValencia  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Rafael. Wow, that's tough. If I was Hybrid Video/Stills I would go with the Tamron, to be honest. The 28-135mm is hard to find for one reason. It's a constant f4 which is great, the focusing is great. Aperture on the lens. Servo Zoom on the lens. It's a dream lens for zooming and Video Production. Although, my friend and fellow youtuber, Dan Watson showed me that Tamron lens and for me personally, the 2.8 at 150mm and having f2 at 35mm is insanely useful for low light (and blurring background). And it's way smaller and lighter. I carry the Sony in a Pelican case with a Manfrotto plate attached to it. Not a backpack friendly lens!!!

    • @rafaeljimenez197
      @rafaeljimenez197 2 роки тому

      @@RayValencia wow you replied, thanks so much! Yeah this is not a lens I've seen often. Someone is selling one local to me for 2K which is a fair price. The Tamron is being scalped a lot and is going for 2.2k for me.
      The constant F4 seems like a hindrance for stills, a DP recommended me to get a prime, either a 35/1.8 or a 50/1.8 for candid blurry background shots if I intend to get the Sony.
      Also, you use gimbals? The Tamron focuses externally and that's a huge no on a gimbal. The Sony doesn't, seems like the perfect lens for that ...
