Using the lens in the hybrid AF/MF mode allows you to get focus on objects as close as 16 inches from the front of the lens. It cannot be manually focused but pushing in the AF button on the FS7 quickly and accurately focuses on below the 1 meter you described.
Seb, you didn't discover the whole potiential :-) put the focus ring to AF/MF but switch AF off at the camera. From my experience the distance at 35mm focal length and below is about 40cm. The subject is about 25cm away from the front lens. Pretty good for a zoom with that wide range. Off course it is no macro lens. I was shooting real life jobs on the field in the last few weeks and I am very very happy with the lens. It's sharp, easy to handle and behaves pretty good on a Ronin as you don't have to re-balance for different focal range.
Hi Stefan, I was about to comment too on the AF/MF thing. I noticed this is something more Sony lenses do, like for example the xdcam PXW-X series. I seriously don't know why or how sony decided for this behavior. Is it something mechanical? Maybe you have an answer. I have never found an answer somewhere online.
An older review but definitely a good one. Small details, like regarding reversing the zoom for Nikon style shows mastery and makes me appreciative of his expertise. Only complaint? No mention of a recommended macro lens. Anyway, a nice concise review of the Sony 18-110, which makes a very good use of my time. Well done . . . and thank you!
I have this lens and breathes new life into my 10 year old Sony VG20 but I still carry my stunning Zeiss Distagon 21mm with Speed Booster when I need proper wide angle in low light (F/1.9) At the other end, I use a Zeiss Contax 100-300mm APO zoom for a longer reach. With these three lenses, I can travel anywhere and shoot anything in any light.
Nice review! I have just got this lens for my FS5 , and it works beautifully. A very versatile and feature packed lens that I'm still finding more of it's strengths. Worth the money any day of the week! Cheers Gregg.
Nice review! Two question: 1. What do you spect about the image stabilization? Better than gymbal of 2K? 2. Limited focal range? 1 meter with 110mm (in crop sensor) is not close enough?
Excellent explanation of the mechanical manual zoom ring at 3:45, thank you, and the demonstration of crash zoom at 2:22. As for the zoom rocker switch you are talking at 3:55 you didn't mention that this is a variable speed toggle. The build in zoom button on the CN-E 18-80 is not variable speed at all. If you need a real rocker you can buy the extra $500 accessory, Canon ZSG-C10 Zoom Servo Grip for the Canon CN-E1880. On the other hand you can choose from a couple of remote commanders for Sony cameras to control the zoom with variable speed.
Hi! I'm using this lens now for +/- 2 years with my FS7m2. I'm very happy with it for run and gun work. The (big) downsides of the lens are: not being 100% parfocal (despite the fact that Sony says it is), lack of sharpness when cropping in on a 4k shot. Looks always a bit soft. I tried the Fuji MK 18-55, and the difference is really unbelievable...soo sharp, even at 120%...
I have a Sony FS5 but Ive been hesitant on this because of the f4. I feel like thats too dark for some of my run and gun weddings or corporate shoots. If I knew I was filming outside the whole time no question, but I feel like I gotta test this baby out first.
Rico Roman Yeah, I hear you. Shooting anything other than brightly lit scenes basically makes S-Log profiles unusable with an f/4 lens. It would struggle in true low light, but would be okay in sporty indoor lighting in a STD profile or HG1-3, for example.
I rented this lens recently to use with a Sony PXW FS7. I had noticed there were issues with soft focus when I was wide at 18mm after zooming in to 110mm to check focus. Is the lens not parfocal. In all my footage when I did wide shots, I had to adjust focus at the lower 18mm or 35mm zoom. Have you heard about any back focus issues with this lens? To compare, I used the old PZ 28-135mm f/4 on another shoot and had no issues with back focus.
Can you please tell me about full frame coverage? If i use this lens on sony a7iii and 24 fps that covers the whole sensor, how much clear zoom id need to use to avoid vignetting?
@@muziqfreek But i want to know how much clear zoom i need to apply. if i need to apply 1.5 which is apsc territory im not intrested as im losing the full frame picture. some apsc lenses can project large image circle
great review. can u tell me about the optical performance for still photography? i shoot both video and stills and while the sony 18-105 covers the range, the aoptocal sharpness is not good enough. the 18-110 maybe the do all lens for my video and photo needs if the sharpness is good enough (like as good as the zeiss 16-70 or the canon 24-70 etc)..?
Sam D'Cruz This Lens takes good stills and Video as far as IQ, it's not as good as an G master but it's still good as a G lens. The purpose of this lens isn't in one area or one strength. It's an all around multi purpose Lens, run and gun type of lens thats really easy to jump out an shoot on the spot, interviews, weddings with the right lighting, good for outdoors and so on. it's only real weakness is in low light being an F4 it's challenging at times in a darker environment, close focusing and it's a little heavy and wide on the a A6000-A7 series cameras, it will work good for the A7 series in crop mode with out any vignetting. Other than that it's one of the best lens for Sony setup, reliability and workflow for a consistent outcome with little or next to no effort. Yes i have one, but i have tons of E mount lens and love them all. not bias :) hope this helps, Good day
Michael Mystro Pierce yeah cheers for the reply! it would be great if someone did some 100% crops in lightroom comparing it with other lenses like the zeis 16-70 and the sony 18-105 etc
You must have a bad copy of the 18-105G! Although I have an A9 and lots of FE glass I use my A6500 and 18-105G for travel stills and video. Very sharp indeed! See sample here: 500px.com/photo/292927441/machu-picchu-iconic-view-by-orville-griffiths?ctx_page=1&from=user&user_id=505142
@@CliffFennell Yes, you would end up with 10.6 MP crop image on A7III in auto APS-C mode. If you disable auto APS-C mode you could potentially squeeze out few more MP, depending on focal length used.
Shield S. Unless you shoot in 4K on the FS7 (since that camera can’t correct optical flaws in 4K- only 2K). The FS5 will correct the 18-105mm in 4K though.

anywhere, its a SmallHD Focus

what would you recommend for working with the new Alpha 1 or the A9II
can I ask what lens you were using when you showed the close up details of the actual lens (like at the 4:00 minute mark). Thanks!
The automatic lens corrections that you're showing at 4:40, where is that in the Sony menu? it's something i can turn on/off?

i don't understand 1:45, can i use this with sony fs5 m2 ?
Yes you can it's a S35/APS-C lens ; but you also can use a FF lens, BUT the crop factor would x 2 (50 mm will be 100 mm with the FS5)
do yo have a link for the lcd

you can get 80% of this with the $500 powerzoom f4
