Inside a Private Island House With a Modern Interior Design (House Tour)

- Blending into the black of the bush, Mahuika is a private island house that embraces the external environment. Faced with a challenging site, Daniel Marshall Architects (DMA) uses the unique building context to infuse Mahuika with a sense of legend and soul, crafting a secluded home with a fiery past.
A private island house, Mahuika is located on Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand. After a shocking incident that saw the project burnt just weeks before it was initially due to be completed, DMA named the home after the Māori Goddess of Fire. The timber-framed structure is designed so that the living room occupies the architectural cantilever, shading the pool below whilst bedrooms spread across different levels of the home.
In both surrounding context and brief, Mahuika presented DMA with obstacles to overcome. The changeable nature of the Auckland climate meant that the interior design and architecture of the private island house had to complement flitting natural light and striking external scenes. In addition, the design of the house had to be conducive to minimal visits to the shops during the week.
DMA convincingly responds to the difficulties proposed by the project, finding beauty within innovative solutions. The practice embraces the environment as part of the reality of living in a private island house, applying floor-to-ceiling glazing to the architecture of Mahuika in promotion of an authentic lifestyle. In the kitchen, a generous whole foods storage system meets the requirements of the home whilst the sleek surface of Fisher & Paykel appliances reflects the view of the bush and sea.
In Mahuika, the Auckland climate has the ideal subject. DMA designs the private island house to gracefully accept the ever-changing natural elements and vistas, welcoming them as defining features and reflecting them back out as parts of itself.

I work professionally in lighting. It's an incredibly important architectural element, and I want to encourage people that make videos like this to show the house after dark, inside and out.

agreed. not the same but im a landscaper and recently our design plans have had alot of lighting involved in the gardens. honestly awesome to see what some well placed lighting can do for anything design related.

Love it! This is the perfect environment for a home like this. Elevated on the waters edge with huge distance from neighbours. I'd be ok with a tiny house on the property, but this home is next level. A real dream house in my eyes.
Whenever I see houses that look like this I think California, but Australia and New Zealand are just as beautiful and now I want to visit.
I live in Southern California. The only thing is, its almost impossible to get this amount of privacy and land between parcels, even in multi million dollar homes. Homes are so so close here.

This is the most beautiful house I've ever seen!
I love that the architect’s explanation was, while still an artist’s vision, very direct and touched on all the spaces of the building (with panoptic video to accompany it). Sometimes they’re too ethereal and the filming focuses too much on details so you can’t get an idea of the building as a whole.

It's such a beautiful design.Since the landscape which has very lush colorful vegetation and dramatic storms which roll through, is so captivating, it makes sense to utilize a minimalist design for the interior so it doesn't compete with nature. The outdoor barbecue is quite nice. The use of natural woods in the staircase is lovely. The home is dramatically lit at night which is beautiful.
Another incredible home well captured by The local Project. Every home has a story to tell and TLP does it better than anyone! Well done and that view from the living room would make me never want to leave.

Is it bad that the first thing I think of is this being the perfect set for a thriller where some tech billionaire lures in victims to this beautiful, isolated mansion? …Too much Netflix. What an incredible home
This is both a graceful construction and an insightful video. Hearing the story of the history, challenges, and passion of the house instead of just the poetic visions concerning the impression one gains from interaction made for a really watchable video. Most of the other videos on this channel lack that storytelling, and feel less human, but this strikes a lovely balance. And, as some others have mentioned, the lighting shown in the nighttime shots really flesh out the space in less commonly seen conditions. The time-lapse footage of the storm rolling past also helped anchor this building to the site as well. Abstraction combined with practicality is a win.
i wish some numbers would be disclosed every now and again. Whether its total cost, or original budget or current value. At least something more than pretty pictures....so we know how much money we need to borrow :)

so this house just bend good that this did not happen while people were inside it.
Its a perfect home for a murder mystery movie.
The house does a great job framing those views! both bay views and nature views. And the pool location and cantilever living room were a great architectural solution for that site. I am not a big fan of that kitchen, though - a bit too basic/generic but that's my taste.
I love every single building you guys show us. And maybe the price of the buildings is not important, but anyway, could you maybe write the approximately cost in the info box? Thanks!

Was it rebuilt after that?
Are we looking at a house that does nor exist any more?
Not the whole house, but at least half of it. This incident happened when it was a few weeks from completion. The entire thing was restored later, and then completed. We are looking at the final (rebuilt and finished) version of the house.
