    Since retiring, I’ve been volunteering as a Tour Guide at a couple of historic houses and now under training as a York city guide. Always a pleasure to meet American friends, but here is a few tips to help get the most out of your trip:-
    1) Please don’t ask questions such as “What movies were made here?” Remember that what you are looking at is real. Just try to take away with you, a few bullet points of the real history, not the fiction.
    2) Always respect the fact, that many historic buildings are someone’s home or workplace. So no peeking through windows and taking photos of an old man in his underpants, who forgot to close the curtains!
    3) Visit a pub and socialise with the local people. You will find that any Englishman with a pint in his hand is going to be friendly. You will learn so much this way and also have a very memorable good time.

    • @MoreTravelPlease
      @MoreTravelPlease  5 років тому +1

      Great advice! We absolutely love history, and we love learning about it. I (Harrison) also have a major in videography and film. I mean no disrespect in asking what movies were filmed in a certain location; I have great admiration for it because it has so much to do with my career!
      The second point made us laugh XD I can't imagine being that old man caught in his underwear! I think they would have to owe them a pint at the pub after that haha.
      We did go to a few local pubs and socialize- just off camera. We didn't want to be those rude people who shove cameras into peoples faces while they're trying to relax at a pub. We are in Ireland now and we just had one of our best pub experiences ever just by talking to the locals :)
      Thank you for he great advice!

Mass tourism has ruined so many famous sites in London but fortunately the city is large enough to still retain great areas that are not on the tourist hot spot list and even in the worst touristy areas, except maybe Piccadilly Circus, most of the crowds tend to disappear at the end of the day.

    What a shame that you didn't go into Westminster Abbey. One of the most amazing places I ever saw in London. there are hundreds of graves, marked by huge slabs of marble and effigies as well of monarchs from hundreds of years ago and notable scientists, writers etc. DO NOT MISS IT. The price of admission is nothing compared to what is in there. Americans spend anything from $600. to $3500. just to get to London. DON'T save 20 pounds by skipping places like Westminster Abbey.
    Interesting about the parakeets. They come from north Africa. I don't know if they stay in London all year. I was walking to Paddington Station very early, just after dawn one morning and a FOX crossed the street in front of me and trotted right into the bushes. Amazing.

    • @barrygower6733
      @barrygower6733 5 років тому +2

      One explanation for the presence of those parakeets in London is that they came from Isleworth where ‘The African Queen’ was filmed. They provided background for Bogart and Hepburn.

    • @MoreTravelPlease
      @MoreTravelPlease  5 років тому +1

      It definitely sucks to not be able to go into places like Westminster Abbey, I wish we could have gone in. But traveling for 6 months and not making any money means that we have to be extremely choosey with what we purchase. We just couldn't swing 23 pounds per person, which would have been over 55 dollars. That's our food budget out the window! We were happy to enjoy the free sights of London and take in the atmosphere. One day maybe we will have enough success on UA-cam or support on Patreon or otherwise come into more money to spend on things like that.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed your stay in London. If you haven't already I would seriously recommend getting away from the West End. Piccadilly Circus isnt the Times Square of London, it's even a shadow of its former self when the neon caked the buildings for blocks around (they were slowly taken away to reveal the beautiful facades behind, some of which noone had any idea what they'd look like) from the 1920s to 60s. One corner has been kept for 'tradition' - now it's a tourist trap that Londoners avoid. The 'busiest' part of London is the financial district - 570,000 per square mile by day (go in lunch hour or rush hour), falling to 3,000 by night and quite quiet when everyone's actually in the office again. The main tube stop, Bank-Monument is a mini-city that gets closed down on average every 3 days due to overcrowding - its capacity is 100,000 people aka as Hell.
    For footfall nowadays, Oxford Circus gets something like 560,000 visitors a day. Funnily enough the busiest part of town used to be at night, in Soho/Leicester Sq/ TCR triangle, where half a million punters used to pass through till 5am, and doubling on weekends. However the high rents have now largely decimated this, what was once the worlds largest nightlife district.

This shows the combination of history and modernity in the city." Do I really need to write a dissertation every time I make an obvious observation so that you keyboard warriors don't cream your pants over the idea of having something to nit pick even though it's suchhh a fucking stretch that I believe an old ass building was made FOR the Apple Store instead of my obvious meaning of the Apple Store is in a magnificent building? Why does everybody who visits a city, especially London, for the first time have to do a video with their first impressions? It becomes boring, monotonous, and a good excuse to turn off and watch something worthwhile. Why not go places like Kew Gardens, Hampton Court, and other places that are rarely shown. Sorry folks, but your comment is a common mistake even made by natives of the land. You do no go to see Big Ben because it is a bell. You go to see the clock tower in which Big Ben is located. Never say that Piccadilly Circus is the Times Square of London. They are very different and Piccadilly is older than Times Square which was originally known by another name - Long Acre.
    'nuf sed

    • @MoreTravelPlease
      @MoreTravelPlease  5 років тому

      Hi! People probably often make "first impressions" vlogs because when you go somewhere new and you haven't experienced a lot of it yet, it's better to say your initial opinions of a new city are your "first impressions" rather than present your judgements as fact without knowing the place fully yet!
      And as far as showing places that are rarely shown, this video is only the first of our 6 videos made in London. In our other videos, we do show lesser known places - like The Nomadic Community Garden, Gods Own Junkyard, St. Dunstans in the East, Barbican Conservatory, Nunhead Cemetary, etc. etc. etc. We also have videos outside of London, all throughout England. Feel free to check them out, we have a whole England playlist which you can find by clicking this link. ua-cam.com/play/PLTZhiMPYl0AW_31thRZe0gQOR6DUzlKiH.html
      Also, Kew Gardens and Hampton Court are a bit outside of the center of London, and we didn't want to venture far out of the city as we were pet-sitting. And besides, we wanted to see everything within the center of London, maybe on our next visit to London we will venture more outside of it. But those places aren't what you would see when visiting central London, those are day trips, which is not what this video is about.
      And because we are from the US and most of our viewers are from the US, we used the Times Square comparison because it's easy to understand for most viewers. Times Square is much more well known in the US than Piccadilly Circus, even if the latter is older.

      Well, I lived there for a month and thought it was pretty rad! Still haven't been anywhere that beats the tube system. And I see that you are a muggle・゚* But anyway, that being said, I have never been to London before last year so I can't judge if it's a worse place to visit now.
