  • I Guarantee I Can Teach You to Master Photoshop. Learn How: phlearn.com/aa...
In today's episode, we show you How to Use the Lasso Tools in Photoshop. We're talking about the Magnetic, Standard and Polygonal Lasso Tools!
    Standard Lasso Tool
The Standard Lasso Tool has it's advantages and disadvantages. It's not great for areas that require a very precise, calculated selection. The Standard Lasso Tool is great for areas that are more of random selections. If there is an area of your image or if you want to create an area of your image that doesn't require a precise selection, the Standard Lasso Tool is the best tool to use. Selecting things like mountains or puddles are perfect examples of when the Standard Lasso Tool would come in handy. In our example, we color the inside of a flower with the Standard Lasso tool. It's perfect for random, unpredictable areas of your image.
    Polygonal Lasso Tool
The Polygonal Lasso Tool will allow you to create polygons. This is great for straight lights and sharp corners. When selection out buildings or different types of architecture, the Polygonal Lasso Tool is a great choice! In our example, we select the outline of the tv in our image. Now because this is a selection, we group it with a New Layer and place an image inside our tv selection. With a bit of transforming and perspective matching, we were able to place an image on the tv seamlessly.
    Magnetic Lasso Tool
The Magnetic Lasso Tool is perfect for tracing around an object. The Magnetic Lasso Tool basically finds the edge of the selection you are trying to make. There are more options involved with the Magnetic Lasso Tool. From the Width, Contrast and Frequency, the Magnetic Lasso Tool gives us enough variety to use the tool to our advantage.
    Conclusion
In conclusion, all of the tools in Photoshop can be extremely useful when used correctly. The Lasso Tools are no exception. They are commonly used to create selections. Rather that selection be a spill on the carpet, which in that case you'd use the Standard Lasso Tool. Or if that selection requires getting around corners and dealing with straight lines, which in that case you'd use the Polygonal Lasso Tool. Or if it's just an object in your image that you want to cut out. In that case the Magnetic Lasso Tool might be the perfect for the job. These three Lasso Tools are great for creating any type of selection that you desire.

I have been "self-learning/teaching" myself photoshop for over 10 years now & am definitely a 'learn by seeing' kinda person. I even have the photoshop teach your self visually books Lol. With that said, I am always searching for video tutorials to help me. Most of the time the videos do a horrible job of teaching step by step and explaining in 'layman's' terms. Just wanted to say your tutorial was EXCELLENT! The steps were super easy to follow and the fact that you explained everything & used examples for each step & feature left me with no questions (which is a first). As someone who learns & lives by tutorial videos & has probably watched thousands on photoshop alone, I just wanted to say THANK YOU for the detail & simplicity in your instruction. Wish I would have found your tutorials years ago! I will definitely be suggesting & sharing your channel!

Great tutorial Aaron, I'm going to refer students to this video to save some breath. May I add something? At 5:32 and 5:50 you talk about switching between the regular and polygonal lasso tools. Not many know how, or even that it is possible, to switch back and forth between the two WHILE adding or subtracting from a selection. While using the regular lasso, first hold down the shift key to begin adding. Second, begin dragging the cursor around the area to be added. Then, while still holding the mouse button or stylus down, release the shift and switch to the Alt/option key to activate the polygonal lasso. Finally, simply click around each point of the area to be added until the new shape to be added is complete. To subtract, simply hold the alt/option to begin removing and begin dragging the cursor. Once the subtraction has started, release only the alt/option key, then hold it down again and the polygonal lasso tool will be active and removing the area as you click points.
This is very difficult for most to master, but it saves so much time because you don't have to switch tools in the middle of selecting. Cheers! Keep up the good work.

I use these tools all the time, and thought there'd be nothing new in this tutorial for me, but I need my Phlearn fix so I watch them all anyway. :) I'm glad that I did. I didn't know that you can switch between the regular lasso and polygonal by holding down Opt/Alt. Very useful! I'm getting complacent with my Photoshop "skills". Tons to learn, which is fun. Thanks again, Aaron!

I love to loose the lasso tool to make selections that in turn protect the area that I am not editing. This also allows me to use a soft brush so the fix blends better. Thanks for taking the time to do this. Laso tool is also good to make a basic selection and then clean up with the refined tool, another quick way to edit hard selections.

I do enjoy your tutorials, however as a seventy year old who finds Photoshop difficult to understand, I would appreciate it if you could talk a little slower and say the various keyboard commands slower to help us oldies to keep up. All you youngsters seem to be able to learn very quickly, unfortunately when you reach my age the little grey cells are somewhat jaded. Obviously I can keep replaying the video to try to keep up with your speed but would welcome a little slower delivery. Thank you.
