The World Is Stone
(composed by Michel Berger,
original French lyrics written by Luc Plamondon,
and adapted to English by Sir Tim Rice)
Stone, the world is stone
It's no trick of the light
It's hard on the soul
Stone, the world is stone
Cold to the touch
And hard on the soul
In the grey of the streets
In the neon unknown
I look for a sign
That I'm not on my own
That I'm not here alone
As the still of the night
And the choke of the air
And the winners' delight
And the losers' despair
Closes in left and right
I would love not to care
Stone, the world is stone
From a faraway look
Without stars in my eyes
Through the halls of the rich
And the flats of the poor
Wherever I go
There's no warmth anymore
There's no love anymore
So I turn on my heels
I'm declining the fall
I've had all I can take
With my back to the wall
Tell the world I'm not in
I'm not taking the call
Stone, the world is stone
But I saw it once
With the stars in my eyes
When each colour rang out
In a thunderous chrome
It's no trick of the light
I can't find my way home
In a world that's stone
Can't say this song is my cup of tea, but hell - I'd listen to Annie Golden sing anything, any time. Her voice is amazing.
Still got that Street Light Shine
Peace

A LONG way from The Shirts at CBGB; but we all knew even back then that Annie was a star. Brava, girl! Keep rocking!
I've seen Annie and the Shirts perform live at least 25 times from '75 - '80. The Shirts were the first live band doing original material that I ever saw. Imagine being 18 and seeing nothing but Zeppelin, Stones, and other big names being covered by local high school and wedding bands, and suddenly, your first real taste of the live scene is walking into a rendition of 'Tenth Floor Clown' at a local club.
You can see how nervous she is as she comes out, with that full orchestra behind her! But she steps right up and belts it out without an overabundance of energy, which would have been incongruous with the music accompanying her. This nearly flawless performance is the best I've ever heard from her! I equate this with her vocals on 'Triangulum' where her voice fades perfectly at the same pitch as the keyboard to finish the cut.
If you happen to know Annie, tell her that 'Perfect Pete', who used to follow The Shirts around with an Instamatic camera had a best friend who still listens to The Shirts and Annie all the time!
I'm just one chick that engaged -understood opera and sang aria.
I hope you see my reply to your comment from 5 years ago. I felt the same way when I first saw the Shirts in 1978. I saw them 60 times between '78 and '83. Our paths crossed many times I'm sure. I have some Shirts videos on my UA-cam channel that will bring you back to those times: ua-cam.com/play/PLrOk6DKce2yT4Kzpkrbz4YOlVuSAEXHNN.html
After watching a few dozen more times, I noticed something interesting. When she recites the line, "There's no love anymore", the orchestra lets out a real trippy musical passage, which has the sound of a Keith Emerson, or Rick Wakeman synthesizer belt-out! I love it!
she's awesome
awesome job great song in any language
norma omg
she looks and sounds completely AMAAAAZING (as she did 30 yrs ago - I hope I look like she does at her age!!)
wonderful
Yup; she is the voice of “Marina” ‘The Pebble and the Penguin’.
she *seems* like she would be kind and endearing.
i'm a new fan (of her music)

Having worked on this production I can tell you that Annie is one of the nicest and hardest working people I've ever met. She had ZERO ego was friendly and personable the entire time.
can't say i,ve heard cyndi's version but hell fire that annie goldens feckin good
Praise Norma!
Praise Norma :) Your Face is in ma Toast xD
Annie does a great job but I think Cyndi Lauper does the best version of this song!
Timing is bizarre. This is a car-crash. Listen to the original by Cindy Lauper.
The original song is "le monde est stone", it's a song (sung first by Fabienne Thibault) from the french and quebecer rock opéra called "Starmania", write by Michel Berger and Luc plamandon in 78 (Later an english version called Tycoon)
Praise Norma!
