    It was only a matter of time before somebody created a pastelmat alternative, and given all the problems pastelmat seem to have it's great to finally have an alternative. Hopefully pastelmat will up their game a bit now! Great video, really interesting to see the comparison of two different styles.

    • @EmmaColbertArt

      Thanks! Yes I think Canson really have done well here. It's the closest thing to Pastelmat I have felt, but actually takes some of the things I really miss about Velour and adds that into the mix. Very impressed!

    I tested it yesterday and I agree with you in all aspects. I had a hard time applying my pastel pencils - Pitt pastels felt hard and almost scratchy on the paper, but apart from that I fell in love with the paper instantely. I also tried to do a wet underpainting (I don't do these often, but I was curious) and I didn't like the result at all. I applied as much pigment as usually, but it looked less after I spread it with a wet brush and allowed it to dry. It's definitely a great paper in combinition with super soft pastels, because it holds so many layers and doesn't smudge easily.

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  2 місяці тому +1

      Hi Nicole, I have yet to try a wet underpainting as I too don't normally do that. But yes I agree pastel pencils in combination with the soft sticks aren't great, quite similar to Velour in some ways. But the sticks apply so nicely! I'm definitely going to use it for a lot of landscape work. Normally I choose the paper type based on the piece, this just gives me a whole other option!

    Thank you Emma. I brought a blue pad - still waiting for it to arrive as only black had swamped the market and a couple of brown pads, but no showing of how the colors were- pot luck so to say, so fastly sold out, but apparently while it is new, shops have to oder it with demand, so it may take a wee while. Expensive in Germany, but then, what is not.
    Thank you do much for your review, is do helpful.
    It’s nice to have a new good paper as Clarefontaine didn’t seem to want to better their long known faults found in the Pastelmat. So looking forward to mine finally coming to try it out.

    Hello again Emma, lovely informative video. Since my wife did a couple of lovely big cat images a few years ago, I could not frame them as all they did was statically attach to the glass with impressions of the artwork, so those creations could not be sold. As a result, I personally now only use Uart 500, as you say it curls like heck. I normally fix mine with double-sided sheets to MDF or Board making it rigid. Are you saying that the new paper is a velour without the issue that my wife had before? A good friend Vic Bearcroft uses velour and suggested that she not push the pigment into the fibres enough. If I am not mistaken Pastelmatt is cork-based and the glue can release the surface if a wet comes into contact. So I steer clear of that too. However, I am interested in the surface characteristics of softness without fluffy velour issues. many thanks for making this video Emma, best wishes Paul

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  3 місяці тому +1

      Hi Paul,
      If you search the word Velour on my channel here you'll find quite a few videos about it. It can cause problems, I certainly encountered them all in the early days. There is also a video comparing Velour and Pastelmat as I like both. I'll also link you to a video about framing pastels ua-cam.com/video/HFE1am9BdvA/v-deo.html
      Sometimes space between the piece and the glass works well as you'll see examples of in that video.
      This new paper is like a hybrid between Velour and Pastelmat. Kinda feels like Pastelmat with a slight bit more softness like Velour. And the finished piece looks more like they look on Velour, extra depth. Pastelmat can sometimes look a bit flat.
      I agree with Vic about making sure the pigment is well pressed or rubbed into the Velour and not to work in thick layers.
      It's good to think about the longevity of the work though. Hope that helps!

    I'd love to try it, but can't find it anywhere. I do have a question. I am an animal portrait artist and typically put a base of soft pastels and then come in for detail work with my pastel pencils. Do you think this paper lends itself to that like pastelmat does? Thanks for this video!

      I think you will be able to find it most places soon. It's only just come out in Europe so will take a little while to filter outwards. As for the detail with pastel pencils. As I said in the video, it works in a similar way to Velour and I would say that Pastelmat just has a slight edge on it for allowing light coloured pencil marks to show well on top of soft pastel. Not saying it's not possible, but I think Pastelmat perhaps does a tiny bit better in this specifically. Hopefully you get to try some.

      Thank you. It’s seems to be would sold out at most places due to very favourable reviews I know you mentioned acid free but another artist is checking whether it’s archival. She was told by the company that the back is. Not a definitive yes. Awaiting a follow up to see if it’s archival quality on the paper.
      I have managed to find a pad of white which Ive ordered it’s not my normal choice but I wishes to try the paper against pastelmat. As your right in mentioning sometimes the quality can be unpredictable.

      They're planning to stock it so I think just keep an eye on their site or contact them to ask.

      Yes, out of stock everywhere! But I think it will be available soon again and more widespread. There is certainly demand for it!

    Its about time we get a replacement for the pastelmat. I was getting sic and tired of Pastelmats drop in quality.

      Heard a lot of complaints about Pastelmat and had one board which was a bit weird. Apart from that I've had very little bother with Pastelmat, but I think Canson have been clever with this paper as an alternative. It's really good!

    I hope the price of this [Me-Taunts] is lower. The cost of using pastels is a bit out of my price range. Every review I've seen of it has been positive. So far, though, I haven't come across it on Amazon in the US.

    I cannot find the paper anywhere...where is it sold?

      @EmmaColbertArt  3 місяці тому

      It's currently sold out and was only available in a small number of places so far as it's pretty new. I think soon it will be available all over as I can see it being popular. Make sure to ask in your local art shops or online retailers.
