It was only a matter of time before somebody created a pastelmat alternative, and given all the problems pastelmat seem to have it's great to finally have an alternative. Hopefully pastelmat will up their game a bit now! Great video, really interesting to see the comparison of two different styles.
Thanks! Yes I think Canson really have done well here. It's the closest thing to Pastelmat I have felt, but actually takes some of the things I really miss about Velour and adds that into the mix. Very impressed!
Emma thank you so very much! Sadly I live in the United States and cannot get my hands on this paper as of yet. I saw Jason's review of it but was waiting for yours because you and I have similar styles of work.
I think it will be available everywhere soon as there will certainly be demand for it. And if you work like me, then I can definitely see you liking it!
I tested it yesterday and I agree with you in all aspects. I had a hard time applying my pastel pencils - Pitt pastels felt hard and almost scratchy on the paper, but apart from that I fell in love with the paper instantely. I also tried to do a wet underpainting (I don't do these often, but I was curious) and I didn't like the result at all. I applied as much pigment as usually, but it looked less after I spread it with a wet brush and allowed it to dry. It's definitely a great paper in combinition with super soft pastels, because it holds so many layers and doesn't smudge easily.
Hi Nicole, I have yet to try a wet underpainting as I too don't normally do that. But yes I agree pastel pencils in combination with the soft sticks aren't great, quite similar to Velour in some ways. But the sticks apply so nicely! I'm definitely going to use it for a lot of landscape work. Normally I choose the paper type based on the piece, this just gives me a whole other option!
Thanks for the review Emma. Always appreciate your view on new products. My paper arrived today -fortunately I was able to get some ordered before they ran out. It arrived in under a week from Spain. Can't wait to try it out. :)
