The bigger draw are Fuji emulations in the form factor. Sony can software patch so LUTS can be baked into jpg like S5II. Problem
Solved. Until then no internal ND etc will peel away Fuji owners - I like Ricoh better for this. But if Sony did emulations or baked in LUTs for jpg id grab an a6700 or a7c2 and call it a day

Don't underestimate the lure and advantage of the ovf/evf. I have both the X-Pro2 and x-100F and they will be with me till they break. And if Sony does make a X-100 type camera it should have interchangeable lenses. My two cents.

  • @thehotdoglover

I really wanted to love the a7c ii but the design is just as bland as every other Sony camera. The PSAM dial for example reminds me my old Sony handycam from the early 2000s. The body is a sort of attractive little brick but Sony definitely took zero risks in designing it. The silver a7c just feels like a skin they slapped onto an otherwise anonymous hunk of technology.
Anyway, I agree, they really need to dive all-in on some retro styling. I question if they have it in em. "Sony" branding needs to be very subtle. The name is almost the opposite of retro in my mind.

I've been waiting a long time for Sony to release a competitor to the Fuji x100 series. While the a7c series is compact, it's no where near enough in style and workflow to the x100. It needs to be a compact, fixed lens style body with classic aesthetics. I gave up and pre-ordered the x100vi, my first Fuji camera.

While I would love a new RX camera from Sony, I don't see them in competition with the Fuji X100 stuff. If Sony did release a new RX, it would likely be at a price point that competes more with the Q3 or at the very least something like the ZF which of course is also welcome. Even with the price bump, the Fujis will still sell super well given their aesthetic and usability.
All of that being said, if they released a similarly designed full frame body for less than $2500 or so, I'd buy one immediately.

I have the a7C2, but have pre-ordered the Fuji X100vi because: 1 Mainly a street still photographer & I hate the flip screen that has to come out to the side to tilt ; 2 I use the 40 f2.5 which is very compact but still a much thicker profile than the Fuji; 3 I’m looking forward to playing with the film simulations 4 I wouldn’t require a Full Frame sensor, but the 40 mp Fuji permits a useable crop zoom from 35 to 50mm.

    • @Eatmeraw
      @Eatmeraw 7 місяців тому

I've the a7c2 and have just collected my x100vi. Previously owned the x100v as well. A fair bit of advice would be to keep your Full frame setup and have the x100vi as a 2nd camera. In terms of IQ, the x100vi is never going to keep up especially after sundown in higher iso situations. It would however make a fun system for casual snaps. With regards to film simulations trust me on this one, the novelty wears out after a while. You'll find a film simulation "recipe" u really like and prolly stick to that one single recipe, that's about it.

@@MDASHIK-di3vz One is a "Full frame" Interchangeable lens system - a7cII, the other is a "APSC" fixed lens camera. For a beginner who might not know what he likes yet and would want to grow with the camera, a fixed lens system may prove to be frustrating.
I would recommend for you to look at interchangeable lens mirrorless cameras. Plenty APSC systems in the line up from Fujifilm, Sony, Nikon to look at. Don't have to dive into a full frame system or choose between the 2. If you want to only choose between a7cii/r and x100vi. I'd say the a7cii is a lot more "capable" in terms of performance and is the more complete camera.

I agree with you on many of your points, but I differ on a few. Sony should not go a "little" vintage but rather go all the way, dials and all. Your idea of using a vintage Minolta design is perfect. In terms of the film sims, allowing imports from Lightroom is fine, but it will not go nearly far enough. Sony should buy or partner with Kodak or another situation and have real vintage film sims that are modeled after vintage film (think "Ekatachrome"). Most people who will buy this new camera want to use the jpegs and they don't use Lightroom. This is critical if this new Sony to succeed. The other things would include Sony's unbeatable auto-focus, keep it full frame and include a chip to rival the x100vi's megapixels. It would also help if Sony could make some kind of a statement about a breakthrough in color science or something (this is mostly them managing perceptions because their color is generally fine). In body stabilization would also be necessary to take share away from Fuji. Basically, Fuji's biggest problem is delivering on shipments of the new camera. Sony could capitalize on that issue.

I was a RX1Rii owner, sold it, regretted it ever since. But never got round to getting another one. Honestly, I've shot way less family stuff since selling it, as it was small enough to have on you all the time. It was slow enough to really get you thinking about composition and be more purposeful in taking shots. A great travel camera and the wide fixed focal length was perfect. You've hit the nail on the head, the third iteration needs all the new tech, AF and EV. I'm currently considering a A7CR for my 3rd body, I have a7rV and a1... For me the body size would be something absolutely crucial for such a camera. I mean when I look at the premium compact cameras we have now, then Fuji for me has the best body size to battery capacity ratio. The batteries in the Sony RX1 series are just tiny and Leica Q series is anything but pocketable. And like you mentioned, the Minolta designs would be awesome as well. If Sony can make that happen, then I'm all in!

It’s going to happen fall 2024. With the craze with the Fuji X100 line and Leica Q series, Sony wants a piece.
If they are smart they’ll make it affordable.
33MP full frame. 35mm F2.8 to keep it small. US$2,600. I could even go without video and IBIS! It would be a smart move. It’s ONLY a camera and not hybrid like what Sony tries to do with all their cameras. They’ve geared enough cameras to vloggers maybe it’s about time they make a photo only camera. When I use my smaller daily camera, the few times I might want a video clip, I just use my phone now anyway. It would sort of be the reverse of the X100 line, it finally has usable video.

Want a Sony rx1 iii with the lense of the Leica D-Lux 8 (24mm- 75mm) f 1.7-2.8. I am aware the D-Lux 8 is 4/3 but I am looking for a special lense to accommodate the small Rx1 full frame body. All Sony has to do is create the lense everyone wants to match the small bodies. The key here, is the small expandable lense. I don’t care how big the lense expands while I am using it. I want it to collapse when I am finished so I can put it in my pocket. Home run. What people want is a pocketable “full frame rx100 like camera.” Work on the lense!!!! Everyone has the body small enough. Marry it up with the lense and you will create the holy grail!

With the advancement you mentioned and Sony’s pricing model for these cameras, a Sony RX1R III would likely cost $4,000 to $5,500. I had various Fuji X100 (og, T, F and V), liked them all a lot but the X100V that has terrrible tree leaves redering imo so finally i used the A7C a lot with some nice primes before switching to the A7CII especially for the amazing video performance.
Long story short, i agree with almost all the points you spoke about, but I will add something that I miss with all my Sony cameras : the Multiple exposure mode.
Yeah, the mode that is in every digital cameras on the market.... but Sony. It's such a great feature to play with. Since it was there in the Playmemories app released years ago, they should be abble to reproduce it in 2024 ! And please guys don't tell me about Photoshop, since you can't directly frame multiple shots in your camera, it's a totally different approach. ;)
Like I said, every other cameras companies has a mode like that (Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm), even the small ones like Ricoh.

I doubt Sony will ever beat those X100V numbers with that camera. That RX1 is STILL priced at 3200 bucks! Sony isn't known for dropping the prices of their cameras or giving firmware updates like Fuji. If you owned a Fuji XT2 when it came out, Fuji was still giving it firmware upgrades 2 years later. It was like you got a new camera via firmware. Fuji buyers totally appreciate that. Sony just makes you buy next next model.

your wish list is way too long. i too hope Sony will make something that is better than Fujifilm (i also use Fuji)
    here's my short list:
    - camera size is less important that lens depth. Make Camera Slim.
    - put a7RV's 61mp sensor and AI tracking in it, i don't mind taking a hit on the IBIS
    - the lens can be a 35mm f2.8, but it MUST be flatter than the sony zeiss 35mm f2.8 less
    - sony is known for modern design, do not change that. just make it minimal, we all need 3 dials and a joystick
    - nobody buys this for video - do what you like, so long as you never increase the size
    - ensure body n lens cater to 3rd party accessories - X100V / VI needed SquareHood to look good.
    the end.

I have an A7RV and an A7CII. I'm quite happy. The A7CII is a great small camera and would be an even better one if Sony made a good quality full frame pancake lens to attach to it, making it even better for street photography. An RX1RIII with a compact lens would probably sell well but, based on the price of previous version, it wouldn't be as serious a competitor to the Fuji X100VI as one might think. It's only my opinion, of course. That being said, if the RX1RIII happens, it needs to be priced to compete.

We need it to be a true 28mm F2 with good manual focus options and most of all zone focusing like a Leica Q3 but cheaper…price it around $4500 and it will sell like hotcakes!
Or go ultra minimal like a Ricoh GRIII but with way better focusing and full frame…and that would be sexy…could even copy them and make 2 versions 28mm and 35mm…I’d buy them both

Pancake lenses for the 7C series could achieve the same result. I doubt that Sony could win over brand fanatics from F or L tribes.
For those who want to make pictures&video only, Sony already has the RX100VII.

Appealing for Sony to make something 'Vintage' including the colour sims might be off brand for them.
They should approach it with 'luxury' or 'chic' or 'minimal' where the colour sims appeal to new tastemakers.
Magic, I think you're right to bring up the demand for such cameras. I don't know if approaching it the Fuji-way has much appeal for the Sony business folk... but it is a compelling story to tell if you look at the $$$$$$.

I love my RX1Rii and really I don't need any update at all. For as long as it keeps running, it will be an amazing camera. There are a number of small areas that could be slightly improved, but there's nothing that could be added or improved that would be worth the price of a new camera for me, above what is already in the RX1Rii. It is already so good, I could not justify 5k (guess of price) for any minor upgrade. Many years in the future, I would look at it second hand though.
But, to play the game and say what I would like; weather sealing, built in ND, ridges on the aperture ring in the right places, joystick, a c2 button. A small improvement in autofocus would be fine, as would a small improvement in battery life as long as it didn't mean size and weight increase.
I would not want many of the other features that have been mentioned if they would add size and/or weight, which would defeat the purpose for me. Once the size matches or exceeds that of an A7C, there is no sense to fix a lens to it, in my view. Sony would be better served to somehow develop a flat, fast 35mm lens and market that with the A7C. I would actually prefer that to a new RX1R.
For what it is worth, I don't see the Fuji X100 or the Leica Q3 as being in the same class of camera as the RX1Rii. If someone specifically wants a full frame compact camera with 35mm lens, I can't see them deciding for the Fuji or Leica instead, because they are not that similar. The fuji will be a lot less than half the price of any new RX1R and it is crop sensor. You just can't get the same images from it. The leica would be a similar price, but is quite a lot bigger and heavier, and is 28mm. And some people want their camera to have a red dot on it regardless.
In any case, thanks for all the great content and enthusiasm Magic. Keep up the good work.

But not priced so high please. I had an X100V last year. Images were great. AF was frustrating with a energetic kiddo and found myself wanting to bring my A7M4 around more often just for that reason. Sold it. Bought the 40mm 2.5G for the A7M4, and been happy ever since.

I don't know how many times I googled rx1riii in the last months to find somone saying it will be made by Sony. And I've just done it again because I was thinking about buying the X100VI but If I do it is because there is no updated full frame compact camera to beat it in the market. I can't understand how don't they understand how good a pocketable (and not too expensive) full frame camera would be. I had the Rx1rII and gave me incredible pictures but sold it because of bad batteries and slowness. But I loved it so much. The metallic feeling was incredible. It is an art piece waiting to be updated. The A7C is bigger and the lenses are too and do not compare to the 35mm f2 size and to the fixed lens feeling. I also had the x100v but full frame has been always on my mind for many reasons and then sold it. Please Sony, do it again!
This video is an excellent idea. But in my opinion no vintage looking for the design, please. I love the design of the rx1rii. And I love the hidden viewfinder. I don't need a built in flash. Of course a smaller lens would be ok but no probem with the current size. f1.4 instead of f2 would be incredible but f2 is ok. I don't need all the modern features. I only need the same thing but faster and with better batteries. But something I would really like is the feature on the GRIIIs and the X100V of taking pictures by touching the screen in the point where you want to focus (touch screen mode to focus and release the shutter). Also 40mm would be incredible. And I don't want the 28mm Leicas Qs.

Magic. If you want an RX3 it’s easy. Just get the x100xi. Lol. Just kidding. Honestly I’m not 100% if Sony has it in them to nail the vintage aesthetic. They have to go all in. That’s why I - don’t kill me - just got the x100vi 😳 but I’m still hoping Sony gets into that game. I still have my original rx1 but just got tired waiting for the v3. I agree with everything you said. I think sony can get 90% of what you mentioned done. It’s just the design that I’m not sure they can do.

Get a second hand one (do it fast because the prices are shooting up) and just go shoot instead of dreaming of upgrades and new models. Upgrade your skills instead.

For Sony to make a top selling camera….they have to make a Fuji x100…..the Fuji x100 was popular right from the start….sony can do it too just make a x100…..Sony size and aesthetic doesn’t appeal to the public. Fuji has history and variety of knowledge in all fields and Sony lacks this…..their only claim to fame is autofocus and only recently some lens.

I’m down with everything you say… though to clarify I need manual dials for ISO and Shutter speeds. I think your idea for interfacing your Lightroom settings into your camera is genius. Cameras are getting to be more like computers nowadays so Sony should be able to do this… they do make laptops and should have a software group. Although I think at this point they need to do these things and more… matching Fuji is not enough - they need to do something compelling here - I’m a longtime user of Sony cameras and I’m thinking of switching to Fuji because I don’t have time for post processing/production … I want the photos to come out perfect out of camera. Enough with the editing of 1000’s of images. It’s not fun

the rx1 bodies are already TOO small. beef up the body to x100 ish sizes, then the bigger lens won't seem massively awkward like they do now. add quality silent shutter, the all over every angle flippy screen, the bigger battery like my a1. 2 card slots. a cute attachable flash like the old Olympus em1 or was it the em5? that lil one that you could flip up or down to turn on/off. retro design. and give us LR like controls for jpg tweaking. And please for god's sake no more dcim standard and numbered images, just timestamp the file name like phones do.

Price point was a big factor for me. I looked at the RX1R II, and as of today, it's still over 3,000 at some retailers new and more than an X100vi used. My main body is Sony, and I looked at the A7CII, but even with some of my smallest primes, it would be clunky to put in my pocket.

I had an RX1r and was my fave camera of all time. The combo of size, iq, versatility is still today, IMO, unmatched.
Besides all good points made by magic, here are my wishes:

    1) New battery tech of the newer cameras
    2) Make it modular. The flash idea is nice. Also, an optional EVF, a grip to add more batteries, adapters to go wider or longer FLs.
    3) Implement better manual focus tech (small square magnification like fuji or split image, snap distance like ricoh).

4) (if possible) Make a tri-elmar like lens with 28-35-50. Most used street FLs.

And of course, all the advancements from previous cameras like great af, fast start up time, updated sensor ah… and make it metal. I feel like some cameras area leaning heavily in composite materials.

I'm not seeing it. With the A7C moreso A7CR, paired to the right compact high quality lens, (i.e. 50mm, f2.5,G) why do you need a new RX1R MIII? It doesn't seem necessary, besides that thing is so small it looks like it's really hard to hold as it. It looks like you are going to drop that thing. And then how much is it going to cost? Right now the RX1R even though it is 8 years old is $3200 new. Conversely a A7CR new is $2800. Now, I have never iwned one and can't say I know anything about this magical experience some say they have had with it, but on paper I'm not seeing why anyone would buy a RX1R of any kind? Makes no sense to me.

    • @Cthames123
      @Cthames123 7 місяців тому

The argument on making the RX1R small contributes to the biggest knock on the camera: its horrible battery life. The camera must be bigger to house a battery with better capacity. If you're going to make it bigger to accommodate a bigger battery then go with a A7C body and pair it with the plethora of small lenses at your disposal in the Sony E mount line up.
