Great stuff, and so clearly presented! One other option that's worth keeping in mind - the "cheat code" for a one-stroke drop out of the bunker... stroke-and-distance! It can be especially useful after a short approach, or even a chip, that's been mis-hit into a diabolical greenside bunker. In this case, for just ONE stroke, you can come back out and try again from the spot you just played from. It can be a good lifeline in that type of situation. Did this on Bethpage Black #18 on a day when bunkers were a major weak point (hadn't watched your bunker videos yet. Now I love bunker shots.). Great drive on the last hole, the kind that keeps you coming back for more. Pulled a wedge hard into a deep left bunker. Let out a big "NOPE" and dropped another one down to use that one-stroke, stroke-and-distance option.
Excellent Video. You provided great clarity as to how to proceed when you need a ruling in a bunker. In particular, the loose impediment information was excellent. There will always be a playing partner that will argue you can’t move that rock or leaf but you sure can! Keep up the great work and look forward to more of your content. Cheers!
Hi Hannah, great vid, are you able to practice your swing in another bunker local to the hole you are playing touching the sand prior to then going to the bunker you are in and playing your shot?
Interesting video Hannah. I think that leaning on your club or placing your whole bag in the bunker is likely to cause controversy so if you could quote the rule that would be useful, so we too could quote said rule. Thanks
Great Bunker view! You explained the rules extremely well, which I greatly appreciated. Question what's the rule if the bunker is watery or very wet heavy sand? Thanks in advance Hannah!
This depends on what local rule your club brings in! The committee can bring in local rule F-16 which allows you to drop out of the bunker. If that isn’t in play you have to drop in the bunker or take a one shot penalty to drop out of the bunker. If the sand is just wet and not under water you just have to play it as it lies

As a handicap player, it helps a lot to know all the options for relief because bad shots are simply a big part of my game. When playing a while ago, one of my friends hit into a bunker and we noticed that there was no rake. He said that if there's no rake, the area is treated differently in the rules. I'd never heard of that! Can you clarify?
Well that was very interesting; lots to consider and think about. It would probably be worthwhile carrying a copy of the rules in your bag or taking a rules official out with you? LOL Great work Hannah!
The other case for bunkers is when the bunkers become temporary water. With all of our rain this year, our bunkers were basically ponds, so many times we were dropping out of the bunker in the nearest point of complete relief.

Another great video! Thanks. One question. Is it correct that you can test the sand with your club in another bunker, just not the bunker your ball is in? For example, a nearby bunker? Thanks, Hannah.
what's your thoughts about the rake in the bunker incident? i feel if the rake was not in the bunker the ball would not be where it is, therefore place the ball where it was and if it roils down to the Centre , then so be it.
Good question! Everyone has different opinions. I think if it is outside the bunker it can stop the ball going in which is unfair. It should ideally be in the flat part in the middle of the bunker so you have a chance for the ball to roll down to the flat .
You talk about taking relief in the bunker under the unplayable ball rule and explain you are allowed 1 club length when taking lateral relief. I’m sure when taking lateral unplayable you are allowed 2 club lengths. Liking the content, just need to tighten up on the correct club length options so players new to the game are given the correct information. Chinny
@ Hi Hannah, thanks for your reply. Not sure I fully understand what you mean by “1 if you are going back on line” Lateral relief for unplayable ball is 2 club lengths in any direction, no nearer the hole of course. If you are taking Back on Line relief you can go back as far as you like inside the bunker for 1SP or outside the bunker for 2SP but you must drop on the line you don’t get 1CL either side of that line anymore. Chinny
@@hannahholdengolf Hi, sorry if I confused you, you must drop on the line but your ball can roll up to 1 CL in any direction. You are not allowed to drop “within” one club length of the line. See clarification 14.3b(4)/1
19.2c allows lateral relief of 2 club lengths from reference point (no closer to hole etc) The demonstration only indicted one club lengh in either direction no closer to hole?
As an older golfer, I'm 74 and recently added another 8kg,I've noticed that you seem to have lost weight (or is it the black clothes?). Has it changed your game one way or the other? It's not strictly a golf technique question but I'm thinking about trying diet to "improve" .
It defintely makes me feel lighter to get around the golf course which leaves more energy for thinking and making good decisions!! I have been doing more gym strength work which is the side that helps more with your swing
No it’s classed as playing the ball from the wrong place if you do, you have to move it back to where it was. That’s why it’s important to put the rakes in a flat bit of the bunker so people don’t get annoying lies!
If the rake is moved and the ball moves I would think it should be played where the ball rolls to. It would’ve ended up there if the rake wasn’t in the bunker 🤔
Q/ If I’m unplayable in a bunker, can I not take stroke and distance penalty? So go back to where I played my last shot under a one stroke penalty. What’s to stop me doing that?
@ thanks for your rapid reply Hannah. I’ve searched the rule book for ages but cannot find this particular ruling. I fully understand all other bunker rules - including two shot penalty for dropping outside the bunker - but needed clarification on this particular situation.
@@LionelMessi-ct7tuSo I’m looking at the Official Guide to the Rules of Golf that I got from the USGA and R&A, which has all the clarifications, diagrams and everything you can think of. I found Diagram 19.3 on page 263 which shows 4 relief options for an unplayable ball in a bunker. They are for 1 penalty stroke for stroke and distance, 1 penalty stroke for back of the line relief within the bunker, 1 penalty stroke for lateral relief within the bunker, and 2 penalty strokes for back of the line relief outside the bunker.
@ Thanks for that Mike, I fully understand that particular rule. My question is, if I’m in an unplayable lie in a bunker can I not take relief under another rule, i.e. the stroke and distance rule whereby I would only be penalised one shot. Hannah has advised that I must play by the bunker rule. I’m willing to accept that but the point I think I’m trying to make is that the rule book doesn’t specifically say “I can’t use the stroke and distance rule”.
