Kodiak Alaska : Raspberry and Afognak Island Elk and Deer Hunt

October 2023 we went in pursuit of deer and elk on Raspberry and Afognak Islands. We spent 5 days hiking and glassing and successfully found many smaller blacktail but nothing that we wanted to harvest. We were fortunate enough to be drawn for Alaska tag DE704 for a bull elk on Raspberry so that was our primary focus. After many miles and hours glassing Kelly and I found a lone satellite bull elk. We spent the majority of the day moving through thick alders and underbrush packed with what seemed to be a bear every square mile to get into a position to harvest the elk. We made it to the top of a ridge to take the shot while it rained snowed and some sunshine poked through for us. The pack out to the beach was no easy task. We completed the 3 heavy trips from the kill site to the beach. We even had a bear visit our cached meat site while we were making our way back for another trip down; fortunately he didnt mess with much and we were able to not meet him face to face in the thick brush with fresh meat on our backs. We would gladly make the trip and push through the challenge of island hunting again!
Thankful for our relaxing stay at Kodiak Raspberry Island remote lodge and the hospitality we were shown by the owners and staff. Highly recommend a stay at their lodge wether you plan to fish hunt or hike.
