- Episode 734: BG Chap 10
Arjuna taught us the humility that a student seeking initiation should have. Pride stops illumination called Jnana from flowing into the heart. It prevents the limitless illumination transmitted by Sadguru from flowing into the disciple’s heart.
Can Sadguru not stop that obstruction? He can. Towards this, He tests the disciple in many ways. Upliftment is difficult in the disciple who, after winning those tests, attributes the victory to his own efforts and prides in it. By adopting the qualities shown by Arjuna, one can become a supreme disciple.
sarvameta dṛtaṁ manye yanmāṁ vadasi keśavanahite bhagavan vyaktiṁ vidurdevā nadānavāḥ‖14
Keshava! I believe your statements are true. O Bhagavan! Neither Devatas nor demons can know your origin, energies & influence as You are the primordial Lord for even the Devatas. Your statements are aligned with Vedic proofs. There is no illogicality.
To emphasize that he believes Krishna to be Paramatma & that he has faith in His words, Arjuna addresses him as Keshava. Ka is Brahma. Isha is Shiva. He who blesses Brahma & Shiva with his gaze is Keshava. To convey that He is omniscient Arjuna called Him Keshava, says Madhusudani commentary.
Aiśwarasya samagrasya dharmasya/vīryasya yaśasaśśriyaḥ
Jnana vairagya yōścaiva ṣannām bhaga itīraṇa
Completeness in prosperity, dharma (virya), fame, wealth/radiance, Jnana & dispassion are called Bhaga. He who has them all is Bhagavan.
To say that neither the Devatas, Maharshis, danavas, or humans can know Him completely Arjuna said Bhagavan.
Mahabharata says- Krishna/ Narayana, the resident of the milk-ocean, left his serpent-bed & came to Mathura.
By saying your statements are true, Arjuna clarifies that Krishna did not boast. Paramatma does not distinguish between Devatas & demons. Even some demons attained liberation with sadhana. Even the wisest demons could not perfectly know Him. Saying, ‘No one knows you perfectly’- indicates ‘So You reveal it’.
swayamevātmanātmānaṁ vettatvaṁ puruṣottamabhūtabhāvana bhūteśa devadeva jagatpate‖15
O creator & ruler of all! O Lord of all! O Lord of the universe! Only by Yourself you know yourself.
Knowers of the Supreme become the Supreme. Vedas extoll Paramatma as- Tvamēva tvām vēttha yōsi sōsi- only I know about Myself. I refers to Paramatma. There is nothing called I and You. Only You exist or I exist. Hence only You should know yourself. Else I should know about myself- is Arjuna’s opinion.
If the Supreme Essence is beyond the grasp, why did Bhagavan say- Yo mām ajamanānidam ca? To dispel this doubt, He had said- dadāmi buddhiyōgamtam. Recollecting it, Arjuna extols Him as Bhutabhāvana bhutesha etc.
Fearing that Krishna may ask, ‘With my explanation will you understand that which is incomprehensible?’ Arjuna extols Him as Purushottama. He in comparison to whom all others are lower is Purushottama. ‘So with Your blessings, I will understand it’ Arjuna implied. The 4 ways of extolling used in the 3rd and 4th parts of the verse, also strengthen His Purushottma-level.
Bhutabhavana is He who creates all, who is the primordial cause & father for all. As He governs all & is loved by all, He is Bhutesha. He is Devadeva -worshipped by the Devatas who are worshipped by all!
Not all whom we worship offer protection. But through the Vedas, He gives instructions, ‘this is right, that is wrong’, & protects all. So He is Jagadpati. As the father, king & Guru for all, He is Purushottama.
vaktumarhasyaśeṣeṇa divyā hyātmavibhūtayaḥ yābhir vibhūtibhirlokān imāṁstvaṁ vyāpya tiṣṭhasi
Narrate all your vibhutis by which you pervade this creation.
You are beyond the perception of the ordinary. Your Essence is unfathomable. But we long to know it. Hence you should reveal it- Arjuna humbly said.
How can we, who cannot understand the fascinating existences in visible nature learn Vibhutis of Paramatma who is its root?
Vaktumarhasi- You alone have the competence to narrate your glories. Humans can narrate only a few of His vibhutis. Maharishis can explain more. Devatas can explain even more. But He alone can completely narrate them! Hence Arjuna prayed, ‘Explain all’.
kathaṁ vidyāmahaṁ yogin tvāṁsadā paricintayankeṣukeṣu cabhāveṣu cintyosi bhagavan mayā‖17
vistareṇātmano yogaṁ vibhūtiṁca janārdanabhūyaḥ kathaya tṛiptirhi śṛṇvato nāsti memṛtam
O Mahayogi! How can I know You & eternally meditate on You? What are the bhavas with which you should be meditated? O Janardana! Explain in detail Your yoga & vibhuti. Because I, who am drinking the nectar called Your words through my ears, am not content.
‘I will meditate on them’- is the reason why Arjuna wants to know them. Yoga or Aishwarya is Ishwara-shakti. He who has it is a Yogi.
O Mahayogi! You are supreme. I am small-minded. How can I eternally meditate on you, turn large-minded and know completely about you, who have absolutely no carrier?’
