I've done a lot of reading in recent years on the Haitian Revolution. I hope one day you guys/ladies get to do a show on this. Haiti is probably the only example in modern history of a country that was created by former slaves, as well as the largest and most successful slave rebellion in history since the Spartacus led revolt nearly 2,000 years earlier. Keep up the good work and know that you are loved and appreciated by all of us here!! ❤

Speaking of Horst Wessel, in 1936, Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine (navy) commissioned a three-masted training ship and named her the Horst Wessel. The ship was taken as a war prize by the United States after World War II. After repairs and modifications, it was commissioned on 15 May 1946 into the United States Coast Guard as the USCGC Eagle (WIX-327) and remains in service to this day.

They all have some competing rationale for joining in but must learn to work together for their collective goal. The final bbeg is an evil king with a funny mustache. The epilogue warns of a former ally of convenience - with yet another mustache - rising in power.

The Cold War is largely boring. It wasn't wall-to-wall tension. There were crises here and there, like Korea, Suez, Hungary, Berlin, Cuba, and Vietnam, but mostly it was a long, drawn out chess match. It would be better to focus on the individual crises and proxy wars (which is currently being done with Korea).

'Horst Wessel Lied' reminds me of when Paris, a small town marching band here in, Texas tried to do a WWII tribute at halftime about 20 years ago. They waved flags of many nations that took part in that war, including rather regretfully a Nazi flag. And they played that song, too. IIRC, the crown threw trash and soda cans at them.

    Great job.
Finding the old articles by media across the political spectrum, then adding appropriate voice acting to it, I find quite entertaining.
Indeed we have many of this still for reference. Why is this interesting? After 1933, the free press is crushed and they all to start to sing from a similar song sheet. It is very easy to forget this period afterwards and assume that Germany was a monolith before then. It wasn't and the press and political rhetoric, social products of civil society in Weimar Germany make that perfectly clear.

Once again, a brilliant format. Could you do a special discussing the different fonts used by the various papers, and their political implications? It was the NDSP that, when in power, mandated a change from the old Gothic script to the more universal Roman script in order to facilitate the integration of Germany into the global economy. This was a bit schizophrenic. Officially, Germany would use an alphabet that allowed foreigners to read and interact with German businesses, a progressive idea. Domestic propaganda, however, was often printed in Gothic fonts to emphasize "German historical greatness." The newspapers you cite choose fonts that emphasize their conservatism (Gothic) or "progressiveness" (Roman).
Totalitarian governments often mandate changes to language in order to erase the past. The Bolsheviks dropped a number of letters from the language to make it more difficult to read historical documents. The Chinese government "streamlined" Chinese characters to make traditional philosophy inaccessible.

Hi Indy, why was the German artillery and the Luftwaffe unable to cause enough damage to the Dunkirk pocket to prevent an evacuation of the BEF and the French? It seems to me that if successful, the allied surrender of soldiers by the hundreds of thousands would have been catastrophic to the war effort. Love this project of History and love for you!

I heard Horst Wessel was a pimp, and he was shot by Ali Hohler, a rival pimp over whose girls could hang out underneath the lamposts. Yes, Wessel was a fascist and Hohler was a Red, but the dispute was about economics and turf, not so much politics.
Until Goebels made it into a propaganda opera of Wagnerian proportions. A hit song helped.

I was a big fan of 'Babylon Berlin' series when it came out. I'm trying to align the timelines from those episodes with these discussed.
Pretty sure it took place in the 20's(?)
Would also be fun to see the timeline intersection with 'Peaky Blinders'

Apparently, the first three series took place in 1929, so immediately before the events in these videos. The fourth series of Babylon Berlin was set in 1930-31, so in parallel to what we will see here.

    • @Lonovavir
      @Lonovavir 2 місяці тому +1

Seasons 1-3 occur in 1929, S4 in 1931. Season 5 will apparently occur in 1932-33. It's a good if bleak show, I like the (mostly) accurate vintage fashion and own a 3-piece suite because of Babylon Berlin and Boardwalk Empire. You can't be half an SPD politician.

I have often wondered if things could have turned out differently? What if Hitler had not existed? He had died as an ordinary soldier in World War I or had never even been born. But I am increasingly convinced that, unfortunately Germany at that time was doomed to revisionism. The sense of disappointment and injustice after the Treaty of Versailles was too great. Any politician who would have appealed to them would have achieved a gigantic electoral success and would have taken power in Germany, and certainly in the 1930s, during the Great Depression. If there would have been no Hitler, there would have been someone else - extremely racist, imperialist and anti-Semitic ideas were also popular in other parties, e.g. in the DNVP. And this someone (maybe Alfred Hugenberg) would still have sought to revise Versailles, perhaps more gently and by other means. Perhaps his claims would have been more modest than Hitler's, but there would have certainly been some and the policy of appeasement on the part of France and Great Britain would have been pursued anyway. Anschluss would have occurred, Czechoslovakia would have had to give up the Sudetenland, perhaps after a plebiscite, Lithuania would also have had to give up Memel. Claims against Poland would also have been made. Weimar Germany was unfortunely a "republic without republicans."

There’s a line from It Can’t Happen Here which was written in the period about a fictional American… government of the type popular in the 1930’s.
There’s a character that explicitly says that the dictator (Buzz Windrip) isn’t important, he’s just a symptom of the “sickness” of economic desperation.
Would it have been exactly Adolf? No, but it would have been close enough:

The Nationalist party would've been the villains instead. Perhaps the Communists, the Weimar Republic didn't have sufficient popular support to last.

I've heard a lot of doomsday comparisons between Weimar Germany politics and current US politics....while I'll grant that there's definitely some parallels, one key difference stands out from watching this episode: the lack of an equivalent to the far left. The US definitely has people who embrace some version of Marxist ideals (though most of those I've encountered see the rather obvious failings in the Soviet implementation thereof), but there's no organized Communist thugs brawling (and worse) with the far right's thugs.

All I've seen is Antifa burning and destroying and creating mayhem virtually unopposed - even by government and law enforcement. The political violence today is coming from the Left, not the Right. I don't know where you are seeing far Right "thugs" committing violence. If this was really happening, it would be all over CNN and MSNBC. A person on the Right today can't even accidentally bump into someone on a sidewalk without bogus 24/7 news coverage decrying Right-wing violence. But Left-wing types can cave people's heads in during a demonstration, and it will be described as a "mostly peaceful protest."
