  • A must-see in Athens is the changing of the guard. It’s maybe one of the most unique of its kind in the world. The Evzones, who make up the Greek Presidential Guard, guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier 24 hours a day in front of the Greek Parliament. The changing of the guard takes place on the hour, every hour - it’s a real spectacle!

    It's a 3 hour guard, completely motionless, not an 1 hour one. These conscripts are working out well to withstand this physically demanding task. Btw, it's an honour to serve one's duty in this department.

    • @Rousseau4469
      @Rousseau4469 Рік тому +1

      No way it’s a 3 hour. Probably you haven’t even watched a guard change. It’s one hour otherwise they are in danger of heart disease due to circulation issues. Look how slowly they perform all these moves in order to avoid exactly these issues. Also one hour motionless standing at freezing cold Athens in Winter or at extreme heat wave poses a lethal danger for them.

These are selected soldiers - volunteers, reguralry exercising (mostly jogging -running) to be able to withstand all the 3 hour standing, winter and summer time, no matter what.

      @@nikosz66 propably you watched it very back in time maybe even before dictatorship in Greece where they didn't really care of how their service will affect on them. There's a lot of water passed by that bridge since then and at least since the 80's they serve 1 hour at a time 4 times the day they guard. Not 2 hours not 3 hours no 4 or more. It's inhuman. And in the extreme conditions those officers that are closely are responsible to take care them as best as possible.

    Traditions and symbolism. Every piece of the uniform and every movement the guards make has a meaning, and a link to the past. They are guarding, not just a physical area, but all of democracy and those that fought for freedom.

If you don’t see them wearing their gear you won’t understand what it is they have on them. Their shoes only weight 3 kilos each because of the thick leather and of at least 60 iron nails they have on the bottom. And their moves may seem ridiculous but they have hidden symbolism’s. Like when they stop their leg mid air in a 90 degree angle. Then they form the number 4 inverted which is the first digit of the 400 years of slavery by the Ottomans. Also when crossing each other with their rifles at 45 angles they stop momentarily and then they form the letter X. Middle letter of OXI. In total there are 5 costumes of Evzon’s from 5 areas of Greece. Most usual are 2 of them but there are another 3 for certain days representing local anniversaries. If you look also at the guards of the queen or king of England they don’t exactly wear trousers. Aren’t they ridiculous. Before the 1920’s the majority of the Greek population lived outside Greece. There were native Greek populations from modern day Turkey and Ukraine to Italy and Egypt

      wearing trousers is really recent in global history and was imposed in the middle ages during war. All men around the world wore short skirts and women wore long skirts. It is scientifically proven that men need ventilation around the testicles and women need warmth around the womb, so that they're both fertile. So what we're living now is the joke, because it's contrary to nature.
