Video Idea: Cheap Film and Good Scan VS. Pro Film and Cheap Scan
Alex Rodriguez Pro film. I can rescan later when I win the lottery 😂
cool idea!
NegativeFeedback Or maybe even something along the lines of; Cheap Camera and Pro Film VS. Pro Camera and Cheap Film. Using the same lab or scanner.
would be good to do this as a blind test. i cant help but feel like the comparison is biased.
Alex Rodriguez cheap black and white is actually not bad. I've used it a few times in medium and 4x5. I dig it!
The quality of that drum scan was so sharp I got a paper cut watching this.
That VX2000 brings me back to early 2000s skate vids. Now we just need to slap a fisheye on that bad boy!
yaaas
Yeah it's damn cool for sure. Still think I prefer the videos on the a7s tho
ofcourse, vx1000 with the mk1 century lens is the perfect setup for skate filming
SD for life. loved it for filming skating.
hell yeah, ive got a vx1 but no mk1 atm, dope af tho
Thank you, you've no idea how valuable I've found this.
Awesome! That's great to hear
Thank you for this episode, it's very interesting !
Thanks George and labs for this great video.
Makes a huge difference to it!!
I don't even shoot film and I watch diligently every Negative Feedback video!
oh my god this couldn't have come at a more perfect time you guys are the best
Good Video as Always! was a pleasure to watch :)
Awesome video guys, well done!!
Thanks for sharing! We live in the states so we don't have access to your labs and the labs here are okay at best. Usually film needs to get shipped from our city to San Francisco if you want any kind of high quality scan. We just use the Epson V600. You're right it definitely takes some practice and a boat load of patience but you can get great high res scans if you put in the time. Luckily you don't need to deal with that! Great video George. See you in the next one!
my new favourite channel because all your videos inspire me to take pictures of my own! thank you :)
Great episode, happened to be sat here scanning negs before I'd even seen this weeks upload. That file from the drum scanner looks amazing!
Thank you! Really useful information here.
Must be nice to live in a city with decent scanning options :/
i relate to that on a deep level
Must be nice to live somewhere with civilisation
I second that.
Thank you so much for this video!
This is really helpful and informative! I do have a home scanner but I might consider getting the occasional roll professionally scanned when it's something special.
Great video, really helpful.
Who develops your film usually?
I fucking love this channel.
THANK YOU FOR THIS !!
Great video. Would love for you to do a review on the G2!
"snappy snap scans" :D that drumscanner btw, completely devouring that 35mm neg, insane (love that particular photo as well!).
Really liked this video. I do all of my negative scanning from home, and I'd never heard of the drum scanner. Very cool Process.
Recorded on sonyVX2000.............LIt
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
I really enjoyed this video format
What ccd scanner did you used?
Great quality!
Ty for this video! And can you do a comparison on the Canon 300v (film cwmera, and the camera you have in this video right now, using some Fuji film film
I’m brand new to film but how do you Include the film rebate with your negatives like 6:38? Does the lab send it to you like that and you can crop it out yourself?
Ahhh lovely G2!
Love your videos ❤
What was the lab you where useing
FYI for film shooters in the States: Indie Film Lab offers uncorrected hi-res scans for $10 on their Noritsu scanner. You have to add contrast in post but, it will save you some $ in the long run. I've tried Indie Film Lab, Richard Photo Lab, and The Find Lab. All produce great results but, I think Indie is the best value for your dollar. Can't beat $10 a roll for hi-res.
Great tip! I am from Spain and Dev+Scan in 120 ends being steep. 35mm Frontier scanned I outsource to a Russian lab nowadays (7-8€/roll!), but the turnaround is slow, courtesy of Soviet post.
I'll inquire about return post. It's a fantastic service if I am again a few months out of home (no scanner) or after a trip. I want to do some SE hopping and having MF on board!
Have a V550 which does take care of home scanning, still, sometimes it feels slighlty underwhelming -- I shouldn't look that much at 100%, bad perception.
35mm V550 scans are too frustrating to me. Lots of resolution not passed from the neg and tedious process. MF I bear with, actually color can be from quite easy to really annoying. I recommend everyone to try home scanning for a while.
Snappy snaps...That name! The song in this episode is soooo good!
I use the Epson V550 as well...the lab situation in my area is completely lacking. Great viddy vid.
Timothy Ditzler I thought about 550 like 55 (fifty-five) and then thought how 550 might sound. came to the conclusion that it should be "fifty-five-ty".
How do you feel about the V550? I'm thinking of getting one.
It's pretty basic but it gets the job done!
There is a bit of learning curve especially if you are scanning colour film but you won't find better in this price range. I would also recommend getting a glass film holder if you are scanning medium format
Timothy Makeups same here for labs. None exist that do more than 35mm. I found thedarkroom.com, which does $11 per roll/sheet, but once I made the move to 4x5, I started self developing to save money. Because fuck Mailing like, 10 sheets of 4x5 out at that cost. It's been way cheaper to do it myself at that point.
Great content!
Another quality video
what about the imacon film scanner? its second to drum and best dry film scanner.
What editing software do you use for your videos? Glad I'm subscribed to you!
Before I even watch this, I gave you a thumbs up because this is exactly what I wanted to learn! thanks!
Thanks 4 sharing!
could you do a video about shooting portraits with black and white photography?
you mentioned in one of your previous videos about a "virtual" drum scan...how does this method stack up to the lab scans (was thinking about getting the Hasselblad Flextight model) thanks...
Does anyone know how to achieve the black border around the images saying what film it is while scanning 120 film?
How did you process the films? Process them yourself?
What about dedicated scanners like the plustek 8xxx series? I don't know if there's a medium/large format equivalent for a similar price, but it would have been nice to see something like that next to the flatbeds and drum scanner.
Great video
Would you recommend any websites for developing and printing?
Which Snappy Snaps did you go to?
I know you buy film at Photofusion in Brixton, any thoughts about their processing / scanning efforts?
Really liked this video
I'm currently making my portfolio for university and am about to send my film off to be developed and scanned, what size do you think I should get it scanned at for a A4 portfolio?
thanks dood!
u should shoot more over at the barbican centre, it's so good for film photography x
wheres bayuex?
Hello, just wanted to ask if you ever consider making video about Zenit TTL or ET?
Love your videos ! are you planning to do another zine anytime soon ? cheers mate !
Not so keen on the big white border - on a mobile phone I was almost reaching for the magnifying glass !!
Gotta appreciate a guy shooting content on a VX2000
Love the filming on this vid
wow, I love the look of that Sony VX2000 footage
Are there any online places I can send my film? There are no places who take film in my area :(
How about the top of the line consumer scanners like the nikon coolscan V or 9000? I guess it would be interesting to compare these scanners with lab scans and see how far you can get .
Happy I could add a little spice, probably cause i'm half Indian isn't it?
Any chance you'd do a video going into more detail on your own scanning technique? Especially for dealing with color. I've always struggled with the Epson scan software in that regard.
+R Kumar I second this.
R Kumar I gotta give the people what they want I guess!
very informative!
Hey man. I got my first roll of 35 processed onto CD from my local Tesco. I have to say, the files are grainy and there is not much resolution. They also seem inconsistent in terms of exposure even shots I know I've taken at same settings. As if their Fuji machine did some kind of auto exposure. Is this possible? With a bit of editing I've figured that -1 stop on the Exposure makes it a lot bettrr am I doing something wrong? The files are not even 1 mb even high res ones. Lol
I made the mistake of getting Boots to develop and scan. 500kb per file. awful. thanks for the video
ouch
I recently had a roll of film developed and the service was absolutely horrible (pixelnet in germany).
It took two weeks until I got everything back. Half of the negatives have fingerprints on them that are impossible to remove.
These fingerprints are clearly visible on the prints and scans and the biggest file has 170kb.
And that's why I have a scanner now and develop film at home.
GentleYeti we’ve all been there at one point.
Thank you George for another helpful video. I'll give Bayeux a try. For 'togs in London who don't want to spend a fortune the trick is to ask around at different Snappy Snaps shops. They are a chain but there is a lot of variation in developing/scanning options. The Snappy Snaps at Liverpool street isn't particularly special but the one at Aldgate does same day B&W and decent TIFF scans, including WeTransfer. I trust them with my 35mm and 120 films, then splash out for expensive scans for only the best photos. Keep shooting and I hope to see you out on the streets one day.
Yes because I believe snappy snaps is a franchise
If you ask at snappy snaps they offer hi res files delivered through wetransfer as well! I only know because I did this a few days ago, if you're interested to see the quality let me know.
Also I'm looking for a film camera that's great for multiple exposures, my F-301 often pulls the film about an eighth of a frame when I'm trying to get it to stay put ready for the next exposure. Any advice would be appreciated!
Woah that tim fellow sure is handsome
Finally got to see the famous Tim that I always see in the comment section 😝😝
the one and only ;)
Would LOVE a video on you making/explaining film double exposures!!
Would have been nice to see you include a good quality dedicated film scanner like a Plustek, Nikon or Canon as well as the flatbed, I use a Plustek OpticFilm which gives pretty good results, I'd say somewhere between the flatbed and the pro lab CCD scanners
lovely camera!
Yeah, I'm new to color film here, and I've got a v600 here. When I started developing color and scanning it myself, I thought I screwed up my development of the negative. It took me about a week to figure out how to do the editing so the colors are mostly correct on the initial scan.
I also started doing 4x5 with it. I have to scan both halves and do a panorama stitch with the halves, but that worked.
You should make a video on using a dslr or mirrorless camera for scanning compared to an actual flatbed scanner.
Snappy Snaps in Liverpool Street provide ~3000x2000 20mp tiff scans from 35mm film, the Fleet St one did too before it closed down last month.
So is there a way the development process can change the final image colors?
Jesus Enrique Degollado Maldonado incorrect develop temperature can cause colour casts, as well as dirty/expired chemicals!
I've watched almost all your videos and I really want to start shooting but I don't have a camera :/ love your videos man !
How do I determine if a lab is a pro lab? What type of scanner would qualify them as pro?
Could you share some cool London neighbourhoods/areas for non London dwellers? Maybe make a video about it! (of some photographic interest/or just cool aha)
Anybody know of any good places in Germany (unfortunately, I know)?
I'm more than willing to post my film.
how do u get the filter for this video? I've been looking for ages, it's almost like the filter on the Mura masa video
It's not a filter, it was recorded on a old mini dv camcorder
Just watched the Mura masa video, they replicated the look of Super 8, but it was filmed on a digital camera and graded, cropped, and had a film scratch texture video playing on top of it
I use PhotoExpress in the UK...kinda halfway between pro-lab and high street. Scans always come back great and they have a great turn around time.
Absolutely love Bayeux, even as somebody relatively new to the film world I wanted to get the best out of a roll of HP5+ and they were really great in there, and they give a really good student discount. Bayeux is in Soho if anybody was interested
Do you edit all your pictures regardless of how you've scanned them?
Nikolas Barrera I have that same question
I could totally hear that buyers remorse in your voice when you introduced the Contax as your new camera. hehehe
What song is this?
I use the Plustek OpticFilm 8100 Film Scanner with VueScan software. It yields scans of quality at least as good as the local lab scans.
Would have been great to see online scanning facilities where you send film off! Love the channel
I would have liked to hear more details from Tim about the settings he uses on his Epson scanner, as I have one as well.
You've gotta review that contax g2!
Thenks bro
one of the best benefits of being in college is having access to a hasselblad flextight scanner on a daily basis. Im gonna miss it so much, the scan quality is so good.
Are you from London?? :) keep up these great vids too bro
try to use vuescan on epson scaner and compare it with native program
From my experience there's little difference if you know what you're doing with epson scan. I prefer the way you can sample auto exposure from specific parts of the frame in epson scan which I haven't been able to do on vuescan.
I would like to become a patreon, but as I do not own a Creditcard, becomming a patreon is not possible.. (I also need to have a credit card to connect paypal to patreon) Is there any other way I could support you (and all the other contibuters)?
Why does the video look like it's from the 90s lmao
Surprisingly it wasn't really a bad thing. Really contributed to the whole aesthetics this channel goes with.
You only needed some synthwave thrown in with sad memes and japanese aesthetics and you'd be set.
If I have to go on limited money I'd go with pro Film and CHEAPER scan. Otherwise Pro film and Pro scan...and processing by myself at least for BW films.
I use a Kodak F235 to scan which has pretty amazing results. Only thing is that it's a nice real pain to setup the software and system to scan.
do you develop it yourself or let it develop
So do you develop your own film or do you send it somewhere to be developed?
The same lab that we scanned at also developed the film
Bought an Canon AV-1, which unfortunately isn't in very good conditions. Would be cool if you show us once how to clean old cameras or generally the sensor or lenses. Btw I really like your videos!:)
hey there negative feedback, long time of viewer of your show here in San Jose California!! Not a film shooter yet but becoming one soon. I have a question to pose to you about scanning, and you left out copy stand scanning. It's a growing community and it involves using a DSLR to take a picture using a macro lens of your film itself. Some people just make it as simple as creating simple box frame to hold your cell phone with a macro lens to take a picture using an iPhone. It gives an interesting effect, but unless you're using a DSLR, you get the full benefit of whatever make a pixel size sensor and a macro image of the film backlighting it with a light pad. Thoughts about covering it?? Joe I might of introduced to something new.
