to avoid flares or "starbursts" from light sources, usually shooting at any aperture under 5.6... the lower you take your aperture, the less this flare will occur. from my experience it comes from the aperture not the exposure time.

Please explain or do a video on how to use a light meter.I have been trying to figure out for a while but im not sure how to determine the aperature and shutter speed based off the lux.

Try pre-flashing your film. That will bring down the effect of reciprocity failure significantly and get you much better shadow detail.
Also low ISO films like Ektar 100 are actually better for multi second exposures than fast films.
Pushed pre-flashed Portra 400 or Cinestill could be the ticket for handheld nighttime film photography.

An 82A or 82B filter will help greatly with daylight films. They don't block as much light as an 80A blue filter, so they're slightly easier to use.
I was waiting for you to mention tungsten film when you did towards the end. Some of these photos may have been better with it vs Daylight film.

Cool video and that's a beatific camera. I'd love to see a similar test with 35mm (much less forgiving grain wise) and also shoot the rolls out all around a similar time of day. Looks like you started at dusk.

Maybe you already figured it out, but there's an iPhone app called Reciprocity plus or Reciprocity+

Since you were talking about metres. If I'd use a Full Frame DSLR to metre light would it translate to the same settings or is the ISO sensitivity scale on MF film different?

If you're wondering about long exposures on slide film, I would suggest checking out Ben Horne's channel. He shoots landscapes on 10x8 film, mostly Velvia 50, and truly works magic with it. Many of his images are taken at predawn and such.
Cool video guys! I've been trying to figure out a way to take photos of myself painting various sculptures with my medium format camera - in order to see the motion in about a 30second time period. Would this work for that? Also, would I need a friend to stand there holding the cable or do they sell timed cable releases?
I believe you can buy locked cable releases (so the button holds in, but you would still have to un-trigger it) or on more modern 35mm cameras (Nikon F100 as an example) there are sometimes ports for timed release cables.
got itttt okay so id still have to run around and shut it of myself, or find someone and pay em a fiver.

I use for long exposures at night Provia 100f. The reciprocity failure starts first at 4 minutes!!!
You recommend getting a dedicated meter. I noticed that using a DSLR as a meter in spot meter mode struggles at night time (even on, say, the ground under a street lamp it shows simply "too dark" etc). Specs show similar low-light sensitivity between most cameras and the current model Sekonic spot meters. Is there a difference in real world use?

This might sound strange, but damn that color grade! Do you use a preset or your own grade? It looks like a film stock, almost Reala 500D

Curious at night what do you usually meter for? I'm assuming the key focus of the shot rather than the shadows.
This is what I have been struggling with I've been trying to strike a balance measure multiple parts of the frame then take an average.. but not sure this is the correct method.
Look out for Johny Patience's blog "how to meter a film" in net. It's a very practical, easy yet analytically explained
I've noticed something that usually happens to me, though I use digital cmareas and don't shoot analog: many photos taken during the night or very dark seem to be in daylight. I suppose that is due to big apperture or very long exposure. The point is how do you know if the exposure is right and the photo will look natural? Many times seem to be really artificial.
I know this was 4 years ago, but they can look like daylight when you follow the guidance of the in-camera light meter. It's attempting to give you info based on what it understands a properly exposed scene is and day vs night are very different. Using the cameras live view viewfinder is much more accurate imo than the ev suggestion.
how many rolls do you tipically shoot when you just go and shoot because you want to, not to test multiple films?

Most seem to recommend choose not the brightest, but somewhere near the brighter highlights
