The reason Cole suddenly became a villain rejected by his family and was forced to accept that he was inherently evil and could never be good is due to the actor playing Cole leaving the show earlier than planned. He was initially supposed to stay until the end of Season 5, but he chose to leave midway through the season. This unexpected departure forced the writers to change their plans. There was originally a script that was not produced, intended for Cole's possession by the Source to be revealed at the end of the episode 'Long Live the Queen,' including an important scene where Phoebe discovers Cole's possession. However, these plans had to be altered due to the actor's early departure, leading to a quick villainization of the character to justify his exit and death
I have heard variations of this, I did hear that yeah, that whole Source!Cole storyline was for season 5 but they pushed it into 4 as they weren't sure they would get renewed past season 4 with the cast and production changes. It's just a shame there was so much going on behind the scenes that it impacted the storylines this way and forced, like you said, such a quick villainization of Cole.
It seems that the arc involving Cole and the baby in Charmed evolved over time. Initially, there were two plans: either introduce the Source arc starting from season 5, or do it around the middle of season 4. In the first case, Cole would have been saved from demonization, and the sisters would have discovered that he was possessed by the Source. Phoebe and Cole’s baby would have been kept, even if Cole was meant to die. In the end, they chose a faster approach, demonizing Cole and eliminating the baby. This change might be due to production constraints and the actor playing Cole leaving earlier than expected. They wanted to speed up the story, which unfortunately led to a darker and less consistent conclusion compared to the initial plans
