Climbing San Jacinto Peak in Winter

  • We have always wanted to hike San Jacinto in the winter, but after the recent massive snow storms in Southern California, we weren't quite sure what conditions would be like at the summit. So we packed up all our gear and headed out for a winter hike to San Jacinto in the snow. It was gorgeous, grueling, posthole-y, and insanely windy at the summit, but the hike to San Jacinto mountain made for a glorious day!
    If you're planning to hike San Jacinto in the winter, make sure to bring ALL the gear. Conditions change quickly out there, and we found it incredibly helpful to have our microspikes, crampons, and snowshoes.
    The route we took was the main trail from the top of the Palm Springs Tram to San Jacinto Peak. This is the primary route to climb San Jacinto in the winter. Other routes are certainly possible, but less traveled, and some also require additional mountaineering gear and experience.

    The mountain at the top of Carillion Creek should be accessible. The top is amazing view of Whitney. But the backside of Whitney covered in snow. Including the trail is mind blowing. That's a big drop. So is looking back down the chute when at steep section at top. To steep to go down in snowshoes. Need both crampons and shoes. Backside is the uphill and your walking in snowshoes on a slope. Unless over the trail. Which you cannot see.
    The video 📹 from top of Carillion and if you go up that peak not Russell the easy one would be epic. Wide angle. Stable zoom to keeler.

    Hellloooo Adam and Elise!! Whooaaa....so cool, as always!! We were just in Palm Springs this last Saturday thru Tuesday. We had a few tasks on the condo to finish it up and make it ready to rent this next week. We both really really hope the working phase is over with that place hehehehe. The downside of our departure, besides having to depart, was that we left Palm Springs at 5:30pm. I love the desert crossings....and missed out because it was dark.
    Awesome song, as always, Elise. I have never asked....is Adam involved with the music too? Such as recording, mixing, etc.

    Whitney in real snow or Sequoia? Lol. I am all about that Carillion Creek in big snow. The top is really an impressive view overlooking Lone Pine Creek. And I did not even work up the north ridge approach. Kearsarge is easy money in winter. The road is the pain but it is easy 3-5 miles. The problem is for day hikes, you add 6-10 miles in the snow. So the pass is now 17 to 20 miles. Round trip. Whitney is easiest which explains why I was up there 17 times in two years. It is also user friendly camping. Carillion is a mutha in the creek. We went up the absurdly steep north bank to cliff bottom then walked on top of the creek to top. There is enough shelter to camp at the top. It is flat has one bristlecone type tree wind might not be fun if blowing from valley.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  7 місяців тому +1

      That's a great question, Liam! The reason is that the snow on the sides of the trail was often very deep and unstable (there is a lot of vegetation there) so the post-holing was actually worse on the side in a lot of places. Other times, it was better, so there were a few times when we did go to the side but most of the time we stayed on the beaten path. ❤️

    In terms of difficulty and avalanche risk how would you compare this to Cucamonga peak? Anything more moderate that you can recommend locally?

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  6 місяців тому

      That's a great question. This one is not avalanch-y at all for the most part -- maybe only in 2 or 3 places (like that spot where Adam fell). Cucamonga definitely has more avalanche potential after you get up to the saddle, and is slightly more difficult. Baldy bowl is a great hike, but it also has avalanche potential, so probably San Jacinto is the best bet for a fairly moderate local hike. Baden-Powell is also a nice moderate winter peak, and the avalanche danger is pretty mellow there as well. ❤️
