The Beatles recorded this Lennon track, which is a reference to their drug taking on April 17 1966. It was a simpler song to record than Tomorrow Never Knows and other experimental songs from that album
Seven takes were recorded featuring John Lennon on his Epiphone Casino, Paul McCartney on bass, Ringo on drums and George on maracas. Overdubs included vocals, Lennon's harmonium and Harrison's lead guitar on Gibson SG
Take seven originally included an extra verse and chorus that was cut. John played rhythm guitar during the 'Well, Well Well' chorus but this part was also erased from the final mix. I'm including it in this cover
I'm using my Epiphone Casino, just like John's. This is plugged into my 1965 Fender Bassman amp with what else? But an Aclam Doctor Robert pedal! This overdrive pedal was specifically designed to replicate the tones off of Revolver. It's a clone of the Vox UL730 circuit, which is the amp that John would have used on this song
George Harrison's SG lead guitar was probably plugged into a Fender Showman or Bassman amp. George Martin then put stereo ADT (Automatic Double Tracking) onto this guitar track, especially during the choruses. I recreated this effect by simply doubling my SG track in Pro Tools and sliding it over so it's only slightly delayed, then sending that delayed guitar to the other side of the stereo mix
My Gibson SG is from 1970. Unlike George's mine is an SG Special, not Standard. The Special has P90 Single Coil pickups instead of humbuckers. I used a Tube Screamer pedal into my Fender Pro Reverb, then boosted the midrange in Pro Tools to match his original tone

Amazing, bud. Our Dr. Robert pedal is absolutely happy to be in your hands. Keep rocking! Thank you for your support, mention and your videos, Sam.🎸
Love this pedal!
George’s guitar part is brilliant!!
Sam, So far your the most authentic Beatles expert out there,Keep it going my friend your inspiration is touching not only me but I’m sure thousands,You have the touch, and that’s unique. GBless
That’s very kind, thank you. Guys like Michael Sokil, Ably House, manwithnoexpression, Dom rossi and mattiboo are even better
As often with them, there were a lot of creativity and inventiveness.
Guapísimo
Still remember hearing this when I received the cassette of "Revolver" on my 9th birthday! Excellent work and such a timeless classic!
Your parents had very good taste !
brilliant track, what a wierd chord change in the verse, john Lennon was very good at that completely unexpected.
and Paul McCartney as well, but especially John Lennon, amazing, being a guitarist who knows about these things, you can use strange chord changes but the trick is to put a catchy melody over it , they were experts at it, without a doubt
@@sampopkin your a man? for fuck sake.
I thought you was an itchy chicken, blimey
Superb. Nailed the tone perfectly. George’s parts always fascinate me because they usually are so restrained and yet perfectly compliment the song which you realize when you see them played in your videos. The Martha My Dear part still stands as one of my favs.
Paul played most of the guitar for that song
@@derangedQuiver check out my cover of Martha where I dissect the guitar part. It’s just George on Les Paul! ua-cam.com/video/HbG8TgOuwZU/v-deo.html
@@sampopkin check out my cover of ur mom in my bed… it goes like this… AGGHH!!! DONT STOP!!!
George was a brilliant guitarist.. So clever..
Superb. I’ve always felt that Lennon’s more guitar based tracks on this album never got the acclaim they deserved. Probably due to the more experimental tracks and the fact they they were butchered from the US release.
This song is also a good example of why I love George's playing. He never showed himself too much, but played with good taste.
George’s fills were consistently magical
I always really liked this song on Revolver. With the story behind it and it also just sounds amazing! Your cover just like the song! Keep it up man!
Brilliant. Just love the Revolver tones.
Man, you nailed it. Tone, groove, execution, precision... Bravo! Adore this song.
Dr. Robert appeared on 'Yesterday and Today' in the United States.
Revolver is still my #1 Beatle album.
I listened on my little record player in 1966. I was 10.
Wow, this is pretty spot on. Great job. Paul didn't play anything on the basic track, he overdubbed his bass.
This was always a weird song to me. It fit in so well but compared to literally everything else on Revolver it’s so straight forward.
I personally think that fits more on rubber soul
And in her eyes, you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years
...
MMMM BAP BADOO BAP BADOO BAP BADOO BAP
It’s kind of a forerunner to the white album in that all the songs are distinct in sound and style
This song is super revolver I can’t imagine it on any other album,
Always struggled to play this correctly and with ease. This helps tremendously! Amazing job!!! ❤
I know John isn't the most talked about in most of these videos, but damn I'm surprised no one is talking about him for this song. One of the catchiest riffs John ever came up with, with that amazing sort of crunchy sound. You know it quite literally carries the whole song when Paul didn't even bother playing bass on the basic track.
I'm confused, Paul doesn't play bass on this particular recording?
@@pjamesvee2869 He did it. Paul did not play the bass on "She Said, She Said"
@@pjamesvee2869 He didn't play on the basic track which is basically the foundation of the song and the first thing that's recorded when recording a song. Bass is almost 100% of the time recorded on the basic track ,but no, Paul recorded the bass during the overdubbing. That's what I mean by my comment
what pickups have that epiphone? thanks.. perfect tone both guitars
Gibson USA P90 pickups 😁
@@sampopkin thanks... both guitars sounds great!
You're the first ever instrumental cover channel that is this active
After further review.....All parts are played perfectly, and the sound of the SG is exactly as it should be. Just for grins, if I were mixing this for you I would add a little volume and drive to the Casino. When you have time, maybe try that and see how you like the effect.
This would have been a great song for a sixties classic movie like Mrs Robinson for the Graduate was
That ending was superb. Brilliant job!!!
That tone is so killer!
Fantastic job at separating those parts and playing them with such articulation. And nailing the tone to boot. Nice!
Lovely walnut big pickguard SG Special.
It always impress me how accurate you get on your covers, Sam. I hope someday I can get somewhere near you!
You already are!

Too dead sounding. Not enough hamering on
they made alternative rock in 66
Brilliant cover!!! Revolver is the first Beatle vinyl I bought and this is one of my favourite songs off of it and you NAILED IT!!! Congrats 🎉!
Nailed it, Bud!!!! Great!
A super underrated song for me (if that’s possible). Simple but punchy and very catchy.
Those guitars are so beautiful ❤
Beatles sound is genius
Great job! I always like to hear and play these cool riff...
You hit John's variations accurately. You've done a great job. TY
Tone(s) is(are) spot on! Great stuff
The Beatles were so creative, all their albums had melody surprises and complex arrangements Legends forever!
dead nuts. note fer note perfect as are all yer vids. i'm a BEATLES worshipper as well as an artiste / musician myself and every frickin' one of yer vids are always perfect and exact right down to the guitar tones and everythang.
Flawless!
This sounds so Good !!
This is absolutely ace. Nailed the tone too. 👏🏻
I had the U.S. album 'YESTERDAY AND TODAY'. This track was on it.
Nice cover! How were you able to figure out whether George used his Casino, Rocky, or his SG?
It’s documented George used his SG
This is more detailed than Mr. 12 Foot Chain. UNFORTUNATELY, there are no chords/tabs on screen 😢😢😢
Quel travail d'écoute, quelle précision... Tout y est, même le son est identique !
Bravo pour le travail, c'est toujours avec plaisir que je visionne tes vidéos et j'attends toujours avec impatience les suivantes !
Salut depuis Lyon (France)
Great transcription of the parts. Now all you gotta do is LAY BACK!
Nice work though. 😎
Great! Enjoyed it. Imagine. One of 3 great songs removed from the American Revolver!
Doctor Robert is my favorite from Revolver. Nice work !
Absolutely fabulous- thank you!
Fantastic job - one of my favorites of John, underrated track!
Great work ! you really catch the tone and atmosphere
You sure nailed it, sir. You got the tones down too. Very nice, very nice. Leave it to Lennon and George to come up with the coolest-sounding guitar parts imaginable. Lennon really scored big on 'Revolver': "And Your Bird Can Sing', 'Dr. Robert', 'She Said', 'And Your Bird Can Sing', not to mention 'Tomorrow Never Knows'...all dripping with Beatles magic. Certainly by this point it was obvious to all that nobody else was doing what they were doing. They were somewhere out in the stratosphere.
Couldn’t agree more!
Plus Rain as a single from the same era, 66 John was something else
Are you sure that John played his Casino? He did use the Orange Gretsch on Paperback Writer and Rain along with a few songs on Revolver.
After hearing this cover, I’m damn sure
Which songs did John use his gretsch on revolver?
I was always under the impression he only used it on the Paperback Writer and Rain session. But if there's evidence he used it on other songs, that would be cool.
It’s possible he used it for rhythm guitar on and your bird can sing or she said she said, but I tend to believe those are also Casino
I think he used the Gretsch for this too but the Casino does sound good.
Check out blank pages by Frank James and peacock alley by Damion angel 2 really fine albums
For fans of this song I suggest you listen to an interesting live version performed by Andrew Gold.
That's the sound. Great job!
Wow... I'm not Johnny come lately Dr Robert fan.
the guitar sounds very crisp and nice job. btw ua-cam.com/video/jwLVPUHeecc/v-deo.html
Could it be that Dr. Robert is Robert Oppenheimer?
The guitars on this song always amaze me. Sounds so good!.........great job

I like the way you went for the royal tan finish❤
Am I the only one who thinks this vocal sounds more like George than John?
i used to absolutely hate this song and then after a while it grew on me. seeing all the parts played on guitar made me like it more too :)
Glad to see new Epi Casino USA put to PROPER use. Splendid cover!
Boy, really good job! Such a great guitar based track, well done!
Outstanding. Thank you.
Beautifully done as per usual 🙏
Ya ever think of doing Taxman?
I’d love to see you do that solo.
Yes will do that very soon
Man ! The Beatles wrote some utter trash outside of their hits !
Nice. Great job on one of my favorite jangly songs by the Fabs. Thanks!
🎸🎸🎸🎸🎵🎵🎵🎵💪👍 buena música jeeee
I love tubescreamers for Revolver overdrive tones!
You nailed this, great work 👏
Congrats young boy. It"s very nice
1:01 I swear this is an open B rather than a fretted one, but I'm sure you've already considered that. What made you decide on fretting it? It sounds a lot like an open B in the song
Where he’s coming from playing the hammer off E-Eb makes it harder to get to open B. But also it would sound much different open, it would’ve been brighter and have more sustain
Love this song and your cover is on the money!
You're a fabulous musicist!
This illustrates graphically the careful mixing of the master tape to achieve the final results.
Hello!
I would love to collab with you! My request is I saw her standing there(ANTHOLOGY VERSION)! I’m a drummer!
Also, I wanna collab with you
Super sound !!!!!!!
loved this
Great job! It's one of my favorite "obscure" Beatles songs.
Best I've seen so far!
Hey Sam I'm a huge fan of your covers and I think you did a great job here. I think you're extremely talented and are super great at picking out whats happening in songs. I just have one query for this one.
I was listening to the main part for John it seemed a little bit emptier than what's happening on the record and so I investigated and found a cover by Mike Pichelli (by no means advertising him or anything I just found it interesting) That has George playing a subtle hammer on riff in the back during Johns chord strumming. Just genuinely wondering how you feel about this part?
ua-cam.com/video/cVp2FMYFOjc/v-deo.htmlsi=KvKUo4Ma5EROGXYX&t=634
This isn't a confrontation cause I can't state enough how much I love your covers - absolutely my favourite on youtube!! I just think it would be interesting to hear your take on whats going on here.
EDIT: He also plays a snippet at the end of what it sounds like at the end and it sounds decent to my ear. I have checked the isolated track and actually agreed with YOU on the part where you hammer on from a Eminor to an Emajor but I feel like that could be played similarly in the other style in order to more accurately recreate whats going on in the record.
Also still patiently waiting and looking forward to a wild honey pie cover. Take as much time as you need though lol
Thanks for the kind words. Wild Honey Pie is something I do actually intend on covering, despite people’s jokes about it
I understand what you’re saying about Pachelli’s version, but don’t think it’s accurate to what’s on the record
While I admire Pachelli as an educator and presenter (and amazing player) I don’t think his videos provide 100% accuracy
I made sure when I did my cover that I studied the isolated parts to a tee, so I feel confident about mine
I hope it doesn’t come off as cocky or dismissive of other people’s videos. I admire pachelli a lot, and I also have made plenty of errors on my own channel
Great to hear back from you so quickly! Don't be worried about coming off as cocky as I know exactly what you meant, and as I've seen from plenty of your other videos - you are super accurate so I trust in your judgement.
Not to hamper on about the playing for too long, but what John does specifically on this track is super interesting to me and I'll definitely have to analyse for myself a little longer so that I can wrap my head around it.
You are good for the guitar hero 🎸🎸🎸🥁
Are you guys by any chance using the new Dr Robert pedal ?
I just bought one waiting for its delivery , probably tomorrow.
If you have used this pedal can you tell me if you’ve tried acoustic guitar through it ?
I haven’t tried acoustic guitar through it but it’s fantastic!
Thank God for the P90!
These guitars combined sound great!
Extreme stereo. Aka Beatles style?
That souned great!
Good cover, I really enjoy your contents! Are you sure this is the proper way to perform the main riff? I’ve always wondered what was exactly played by the guitars in there…
Yes it’s 100% how they played the song. I listened closely to isolated tracks and did tests to make sure
This is where Oasis get their sound
I just noticed (Because of you) that George plays the same shape on this song and on She Came in through the Bathroom window!
Yea!
Excellent cover bro!!!
Excellent 👌🏻
Well well well feeling fine! É isso ae
