E3 2018: Nintendo Press Conference Review -- CLS Side Quest
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 вер 2024
- Nintendo showed other publishers and hardware manufacturers the exact style of E3 press conference we should get: Something short, tight, pre-recorded, and well-produced. Unfortunately, Nintendo kinda forgot to actually show games, even if we saw Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the first time.

Thank you for supporting Side Quest during E3! I really appreciate your kind words.
Now, it's time for me to sleep. -Colin
Colin's Last Stand: Side Quest I was waiting for your take on this conference. Keep up the good work bro.
Great coverage Colin.
Awesome stuff man! Thank you for this and the other gaming videos! I also love learning new historical facts on your podcast, it’s been amazing to say the least. We truly do appreciate every thing you release here and CLS, thank you again Mr. Moriarty
Good job on the new content. Would you ever consider doing a video on CLS about the Italian mafia? I don't know if you're well-versed in that part of history, but I imagine you are. After all, you're Italian. Much love from Nebraska.
You killed it this E3 Colin!
I DID?
I have to disagree with you about live stage shows. Things like the new GOW reveal would not have had nearly the same impact w/o that amazing orchestrated stage demo. The Nintendo directs just come off as just dry and clinical by comparison, and in what is supposed to be the biggest celebration of the gaming industry, really lacks a sense of hype. E3 is a guilty of being a hype machine for sure - but not all hype is inherently bad or misplaced.
Thoroughly enjoyed these, Colin! Thank you for the content!
Play Hollow Knight Colin! It's a masterpiece in my opinion.
SAME!! I would have recommended it earlier, but I know Colin doesn't really play games on PC. One of the best games of 2017!
Game of the year 2017 for me. But the fact that it's on PC, and was at the beginning of the year, and everyone has a hard on for everything Nintendo, means it got forgotten about. I loved Odyssey but BotW was overrated in my opinion.
I’m loving this quick turnaround. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for this run of videos, you did a great job getting them out so frequently
Colin, you legitimately put out THE most concise and edu-taining E3 content this year full stop.
Keep it up man
Colin the videos have looked great all week. Great job with production and getting these out. Also I listened to the newest fireside chat about Solo and I was so happy that you and Dagan liked it too.
Absolutely. I wish we could hear way more from Dagan and Colin together. Love their podcasts.
Solo was a good film. I think it's just cool to hate Star Wars now. There's a lot of people out there that don't have their own opinion.
Colin had the best E3 showing
Awesome content this week, Colin. Couldn't have been easy to stay on top of it all and produce these videos so quickly.
Colin,
As our sub feeds are filled and cluttered with e3 videos, I thank you for both the quality of your videos as well as their length. Rock on dude.
Excellent E3 coverage Colin, I’d say it’s probably the best on the net. Not only is it concise and to the point, but it’s also packed with information and entertaining. I much prefer this type of content over a “watch along” style. I liked being able to watch the conferences and then immediately after hear your thoughts on them.
Dude I really enjoyed your E3 conferences reviews. If this is what we can expect from this channel, then you just won a new backer my friend!
Thanks for all the e3 coverage!
Just as a tidbit for Colin, Ridley has been a widely requested character from Smash fans for years and years, so his inclusion is a pretty big deal.
And Inkling was just a Mii costume last game
Great hearing from you this E3, Colin. By far some of the best coverage in years. Looking forward to next year!
Thank you for your continued coverage of E3, Colin! You've fast become my go-to for everything E3
Your E3 content has been outstanding, Colin! Thank you so much for the obvious care you put into all of these videos.
Thanks for all of these Colin, perfect length, great analyisis, and they went up so quick after the conferences. Only E3 videos I watched this year. All the best for the channel :)
Been waiting for this since the direct! Your E3 coverage is on point, concise and really well written, keep it up!
You deserve more subs for the quality of your video essays. Keep it up brother.
I waited for you to inform me on Nintendo, man. I am tapped out on watching these conferences. Thanks for the hard work!
Thanks for the 7 Video's Colin, Really great coverage and discussion and always love hearing what you to say.
This E3 Didn't have the suprises many wanted but if you own all three consoles you have a Major game or two you should want for the next 12 months which is amazing if you think about it.
Really enjoying your fresh take on E3 conferences! Found myself nodding along in agreement.
Your E3 videos have been my favorite. Great work!
Great E3 coverage Colin. I love listening to your perspectives on the gaming industry.
A masterclass of analysis. Colin you managed to balance Kinda Funny’s remarks from a distance and for all of us that’s a fan of the both of you thank you.
Great work man, we need a bit of Colin in the games industry! :)
Great video Colin. Missed the Nintendo conference so greatly appreciate the recap
Best e3 coverage on the interweb. Thanks colin
Great break down as always Colin. Love the videos man!
As a casual Nintendo fan and Switch owner (that also primarily games on Xone and PS4) I thought this was the worst Nintendo Direct I’ve seen in a very long time. I liked Mario Party when I was younger but I don’t want to buy more controllers, nor am I sure I’d have friends of family to play this with. There was no new news about the Pokémon game we actually want, no Metroid and no Yoshi. Fortnite was a huge get and probably will be the only reason I even pick up my Switch this year, because as much as hardcore gaming nerds want to rip on it, it is an extremely fun and well curated game that you can pick up and play as long or as little as you like. And obviously the lack of a virtual console continues to be the most asinine crime Nintendo as committed. I’d actually be on my Switch a TON if I could play old NES, SNES and N64 games.
Loved all the breakdowns Col!
Colin. Can I say your absolutely killing it this E3?
These are so well crafted. Good job Colin M.,
Super fans of Smash have been begging for Ridley forever. Ridley was even one of the popular characters that were modded into Brawl using the Project M mod. I think the hard core fans are going to love the Ridley announcement.
Just 4 hours after the post on /r/SmashBros, the thread regarding Ridley is now the 3rd most upvoted post in that subreddit of all time. www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/top/?sort=top&t=all
EDIT: To be fair, people wanting Ridley was more of a meme, but still.
This is fantastic. 10 minutes but has more than enough detail and is straight to the point, unequivocal and not afraid to say it exactly how it is. I always enjoy your brutal honesty Colin. Smash is not a system seller - and as a Pokémon fan but a non Smash fan, I left this direct bitterly disappointed.
Perhaps I was hoping for too much but I really did think at least a skyward sword remake or metroid trilogy remaster was coming. What happened to Yoshi too???? That aside - this was a fantastic piece so kudos to you for that.
Smash is definitely a system seller. No SSB game has ever sold less than 5 million. SSB Melee was a huge system seller on Gamecube, for example. SSB Ultimate will most likely sell 8 to 10 million copies.
Did you say, RIPley? Lol. Good piece as always! Last E3 escaped your criticism, never forget.
Oops, turns out my speaker is blown. He did not say Ripley.
I swear you picked the funniest clips for the beginning of these e3 videos. Keep it up my boy!
A little out of the smash loop my friend and I’d love to give you a rundown if you’re willing. While I agree Ridley isn’t really the greatest pick for people outside the smash community he is one of the longest running memes of all time inside and a pretty stellar way of showing devotion to the long time fans.
There’s been a call for Ridley ever since it was noted that there was a lack of representation of villains in smash way back in melee era. He famously said Ridley was “too big” for smash and put him in Brawl as a boss battle. There’s been back and forth joking banter between he and the community ever since and he stood his ground until now. If you notice, Ridleys entrance title in the trailer, “Hits the Big Time” is at its core just a subtle joke referencing all this size drama.
This Smash title definitely has a theme and that’s to give the fans everything they want as best as Sakurai can (well unless you’re hoping for the glorious reboot of competitive melee in meleeHD... ie another meme at this point). The first few seconds where he decides not to bother with explaining Smash and went right to the changes was a good example of such. But the list of smash fan acknowledgements is so long I could type all day. Ridley is a pretty fantastic way of showing recognition to the fans and a ‘huge’ change of pace from the casual focused mindset we’ve seen ever since Brawls development.
I'm not sure I understand what could possibly satisfy Colin. Not hating. Just an observation.
My guess is that Nintendo's way of keeping their switch momentum going is by using their more frequent directs (one every few months or so) to highlight their next major game on the horizon while also showing us what we can play in the meantime until that tent-pole title releases with games in the indie, AA, and port markets. The switch doesn't seem like it will ever have the myriad of AAA titles like xbox or playstation, so metering themselves might be an act of necessity. Im no analyst, but I think this would be a pretty smart game plan since nintendo cant pump out high quality zeldas, marios or smashes without sacrificing their polish.
TLDR- these 'one major title sprinkled with other more minor games' nintendo directs might be nintendo's only way to realistically keep their foot on the gas with switch.
Great series of e3 videos! Way to go!
A tear of joy escaped my eye after so much Smash Love.
I personally like a live presentation. I mean if there are awkward stops or 'cringe', it doesn't bother me as that's part of most of presentations in any medium that involve very different genres.
I personally find the direct lack personality or that faint quirk.
I am kind of tired of hearing about franchises that "don't move units" since there are multiple reasons why a giving franchise at a giving time wouldn't be on the most popular system at the time.
Switch is a popular system right now. Smash is a popular series that sells extremely well. Pokemon is a popular series that sells extremely well. Of cause the new games will move units BECAUSE they are connected to a system that people want to buy and that is unique in the marked place.
Whether or not Nintendo can keep the pace up in 2019 is yet to see and their 2018 line up surely isn't as strong as last year. But Smash and Pokemon will push them forward this holiday.
While I believe it was a good conference overall, I personally found it disappointing, I don't play Smash or Pokémon. I was after Metroid Prime 4, the new rumoured Star Fox racer or whatever retro is working on and a port of Xenoblade Chronicles X. I got none of these. The only game that peaked my interest was Fire Emblem which I've never played before and Octopath Traveller which I already know about. The rest that interest me I already have on PC (Hollow Knight & Wolfenstein).
Being that Metroid Prime 4 only got a logo last year, I didnt expect to see anything this year. I am excited for it but still.
The one game I was surprised wasnt shown at all was Yoshi. Last year, we got a half hour demo of the game. I was surprised to learn the it was delayed to 2019.
Nintendo generally only shows things off when they have gameplay. Given that they announced that they were starting work on MP4 last year, I doubt it's in a showable state yet.
I'm glad you covered e3 this year. It was fun to get your opinions.
Colin joo Daa mehn brah. Much love , keep it up my dude.
I completely agree with you Collin. Nintendo showcase wasn’t awful but it didn’t show any surprise third-party support.
Collin I love your videos, but I truly believe there has to be a better way to promote your patreon, the 1 minute add in front of every video is really not working
Pablo Ovalle I think he should put it at the end of his videos
Steven People wouldn't see if its at the end
Kc Wright sure they would. I see other youtubers do it all the time
he now also uses ads from youtube. oh and it is an 'ad' not an 'add'
especially considering he already has 5000 patreon so its not necessary to make it that obvious
I have to disagree Colin, the live conference, when done well, provides a great experience both for those in the room and those watching at home, and is potentially more effective at generating what we in the radio business call the 'sizzle'. (More commonly known as hype.)
It's kind of like saying you should just watch one of Metallica's music videos rather than go see them live.
That said, I've been enjoying your reviews this year. Great work!
I really enjoyed what nintendo brought this E3 and want to remind people that they are the one company that regularly does updates direct to customers throughout the year with a direct every 3 months or so. I do have to ask though, where is that 2018 yoshi game?
I was wondering the same thing about Yoshi. I had assumed we'd see more gameplay/ get a release date at this point
It was delayed to 2019. Ign released details from a nintendo exec from E3. Apparently we will learn more details later this year.
Daniel Claggett Oh thanks!
There's nothing weird about the Ridley announcement: fans have been requesting him as a playable character for a very, very long time, and the developers kept pushing back against it, claiming he was too big to implement correctly. He's probably the single most requested character in Smash.
A good overview of the presentation. I think Nintendo has more to show us throughout the year. They've been less and less reliant on E3 to get their message out, relying more on their directs throughout the year.
Yeah great job Colin yours and the easy allies were the only opinions I looked to after the pressers x
Relic of the past but I like seeing fan reactions.
Excellent points Colin 👍 Let's not forget however that Nintendo does Directs scattered across the year, not exclusive to only E3. Smash is indeed a system seller. It's not Smash's fault it released on 3 duds (N64, GC & Wii U) in terms of hardware. I've been holding off from buying a Switch just for Smash alone.
The one game I was SO EXCITED to hear about was Yoshi.
Come to find out, the game was delayed to 2019 most likely to march similar to the spot kirby filled this year.
I found the Nintendo Direct a little bit thin too. Only 3 things they showed are things I'd buy, one was announced previously, one is a port, and the other is DLC.
You gotta pair the style of Sony's reveals with Nintendo's format.
It was weird because Nintendo certainly has titles on the pipeline that could have beefed up their presentation but were somehow absent. Namely Bayonetta 3, Yoshi, Metroid and a few Wii U gems that haven't been remastered yet, but can be huge such as New Super Mario Bros Wii U, Super Mario Maker, Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2...
cant say i agree. i like the grand old school style. there's something to be said about the digital style but i prefer the up close and personal style MS and Sony are known for. Its like saying sports stadiums should have no fans since you can watch games from the comfort of your home. still love your content though
I prefer the live conferences, i find them far more exciting, also allows you to add the live music which can really add to the show, in my opinion.
This is the first time I've been excited for a Mario Party game in over a decade.
Loving your coverage, Colin. To fill you in, I believe Ridley is fan service, as he/she/it is popular in Sm4sh online communities and big in the community Melee remake. Core Smash fans will be going ape shit.
Agree with a lot of this. I enjoyed Nintendo's stuff and they're the only console maker that really matters to me. The substance of their presentation was: ok. Not poor by any means but it definitely needed at least one more heavy hitter. I'm generally positive about what they showed but I'm not over-the-moon about it.
But in terms of style and control of presentation I give it an A+. I'll never be at E3 in person, so the pomp and circumstance of the live shows is lost on me. And when your average presentation this year was between an hour and 90 minutes I felt like I ran a freaking marathon without the sense of accomplishment.
Great job again!
I don't know how you're able to beautifully edit these videos so fast right after the e3 conferences meanwhile some people (not saying any names) wont drop a video until these conferences is over
Pokemon Go is far from dead, it still has an active playerbase of millions worldwide, and in most major cities you can easily find players to raid with (the Game's main co-op content).
The switch got me back into gaming. I feasted on UA-cam videos to see what games were out and bought a lot of games even from limited games way more than I had for my ps4. So when I watched e3 I was excited and was expecting new games and old games and got nothing. Even a hint at releaseing games from the old systems would have done it for me. Unexpectedly watching e3 got me back into playing my ps4 and buying a Xbox one.
Ridley in smash is an answer to a long running joke of it being too big to be a playable character. Also, people need to remember Nintendo has 3 or 4 directs per year, e3 is just one of them, not even the biggest one these past 12 months. Great analysis as usual, btw.
THank you Colin
Fair and reasonable take.
Hey great coverage man. I think Nintendo is good shape for the rest of 2018. From what I've seen from Nintendo diehards I follow there's a lot to be excited about. I only have Breath of the Wild, but there are some thing I'll be picking up later this year. I think Pokemon will do a lot better than expected even if it's not the core game everyone wants. I wish they did talk more about their online service this year, as well as what Retro Studios is working on and where Metroid is at. I think by the end of the year I would expect to have a few directs that showcase what's coming in the first half 2019. Smash looks fantastic and since I skipped out on having a Wii U I'm really hyped for it. As someone who use to play a lot of smash they showed exactly what I wanted see (it's an ultimate package for fans of the series.).
Like you said, not a home run, but a good hit. We'll have to wait and see and hopefully there is some substance to early 2019.
Why isn't this channel growing more?
"No cringe" - Really?
SO PUMPED FOR FIRE EMBLEM!!!
IT Was a good show indeed but as you said not a home run. Nintendo is infamous for it's "oh one last thing" that blows it's fans away. Unfortunately it came in the way of pleasing Smash fans alone. Ripley has been top pics on the requests of Nintendo's internal studios plethora of characters. (Goku of DragonBall outside of Nintendo) But almost everything they showed is in a 12 month release window. A big one more thing missed the sweet spot of the bat this year. But, we got plenty of Directs coming sooner than E3 2019. Great Job on all the coverage this year Colin. Pleased and impressed you got all this out timely too. As Your lone wolfing it!
Pokemon needs to be reintroduced to the wider public. I'm a 37 year old guy and certainly familiar with the IP, but I have no idea what type of game a Pokemon game would be. I could even take a moderately educated guess.
Miss your writing, more of this!
Hollow Knight is what got me the most hyped, I've been waiting for that to come to Switch for a while.
There's no feeling like the crowd cheering when an awesome game is announced or laughing at a funny moment on stage.
I don't personally participate at any E3 conference, but whenever I re-watch a trailer on youtube, I prefer the recording from E3 just because of the crowd reaction.
Watching pre-recorded stuff is OK, but kinda lame at the same time
I just noticed that these videos have more views than Kinda Funny E3 vids. Interesting.
Fair review! The presentation was nicely presented but a bit lacklustre! In the end, I think Nintendo will be coasting on Smash and Pokemon for this year, and as a fan that's a shame.. :(
Good and solid analysis, well done. I appreciate your opinion.
Thanks Colin, these were awesome, but wow the Nintendo Direct totally bummed me out. My Switch is collecting dust for now.
An error I find in your assessment of Smash's console selling ability is the fact that the has been the top or one of the top selling games on each system it has been on. The reason why the Wii U didn't sell more units is because the game was available on the 3DS.
Reggie stayed that this e3, the direct was going to focus on 2018 games. Which is why we didn’t see any Metroid.
I think Nintendo should have shown a sneak peak for Metroid Prime 4 and should have announced the Switch Mini.
And I do think a one peice switch that's a little more durable would be the "third teir" so parents would feel okay buying them (multiple ones) for their kids Christmas time.
I skipped a generation of Smash Bros due to not getting the Wii U, but I have to say my experience of the Smash Bros Ultimate section was completely different to yours. I was on the edge of my seat anticipating each and every small detail, from minute changes to character damage aesthetics to gameplay changes. Not a single moment of it felt wasted to me. The only thing conspicuously absent is mention of the complete featureset when it comes to modes. They confirmed 8 player brawl but no word of a singleplayer, or rather story mode. Hopefully more to come in the following months.
Awesome just present the facts. Good Stuff.
great content this E3, though i wouldn't say everyone has stopped playing Pokemon Go when it's the largest earning mobile game currently
The last time I was truly excited over an E3 conference was Sony’s 2016 show. That was phenomenal. The past two years have been fairly tame, though. I guess Microsoft won 2018, but that’s not really saying much in my opinion.
You know Ninty don’t play by the rules. They’re saving Animal Crossing, Metroid etc. for their own Directs.
Great E3 coverage!
I wanted Mike Tyson's Punchout 2, a new Kid Icarus with Horizon Zero Dawn type gameplay, and a proper Ice Climbers game with new mechanics. I'm dreaming, I know.
I thought that Nintendo spent way too much time on Smash. I think we would have been fine with maybe half of that and leave the rest open to expand a bit more on some of the "Nindies" instead of just a few seconds of gameplay of them. Overall, I still think it was a really good direct!
Great job on the E3 coverage Colin!
Nintendo has several directs year around, them focusing on Smash most of this e3 doesn't matter. Pokemon Lets Go is a huge game and it was announced outside of e3. Animal Crossing and footage of Metroid Prime will probably do the same thing.
I think you're way off in how important smash will be for the system. having smash on the go will be a game-changer. it's much more casual, accessible, and quick than the other competitive games like kart or tennis aces. and it has depth for the core fans. I think it will be a top 5 in the switch's lifetime. I was very, very happy for the in-depth (also a melee bro).
