I feel like the definition of "port" has kind of gotten lost in recent years. "Porting" a game is just taking a game from its native platform and making it run on another platform with the experience generally unchanged. An enhanced port, like MK8D, is a port but adds some new content like characters or items and maybe fixes or tweaks some elements, but is still largely the same experience. Same graphics, same stages, same racing physics, etc. It added a whole new mode, which is significant, but that mode is built using the same foundation and many of the same key assets as the original game.
I don't see how Smash Ult can be categorized as a port in any way. Yes, there is content coming back from past games, but that's true of every Smash game. Smash Ult has new branding, new menus, new mechanics, some new characters, new stages, remastered past stages, new music, new versions of mainstays like Battlefield, new character models and animations, a new rendering engine... Any way you slice it, this game is new in every respect. It just happens to also focus on bringing back a lot of stuff from the past. But the stuff it does bring back has been upgraded. The experience of playing the game is still fundamentally a new experience.
It's an amalgamation of past smash games with its own iteration of the core smash gameplay. You could compare it to something like Sonic Mania. Mania draws a lot from the past, but gives it all a new spit and polish as well, as well as new content. It looks a LOT like old games, but it's definitely not a port of any past game.

Artsy Omni I agree. This is definitely not a port. So much has changed. In my opinion, the most telling aspect of whether this is a port or not would be the single player content, and I have a feeling that single player will be seeing a massive overhaul from Smash 4. They said in the direct that you're going to start with an extremely small selection of characters and then build your way up towards a massive roster as you unlock more stuff from the game. That's extremely different from Smash 4, where you actually started out with a sizable majority of the characters already available. To me, that hints towards a totally different single player experience, and if that is indeed the case, then calling this a port just seems absurd.

That was one of the biggest problems.

Let's face it the main reason most people were so hyped for Nintendo's E3 was Smash itself, considering all the countless months of waiting and speculation videos, and wish lists of characters people wanted to see. However I'm not even a huge Metroid Prime fan but even I was kinda surprised that they didn't touch upon Prime 4 at all.
Okay let me settle a few things here because I’m sick of people still arguing about this subject.
1.) Smash Ultimate uses the same engine as Smash 4, the credits were for the whole presentation not for Smash alone.
2.) Just because it uses the same engine does not make it a port, that’s like saying Bloodborne is a port of Dark Souls; or that Skyrim is a port of Morrowind just because they use the same engine.
3.) Just because there’s improvement in the visuals is not a confirmation of it being either A.) Run on a different engine, or
B.) A sequel.
It could be simply due to improvement in the hardware they are running the game on. The Switch is more powerful than the WiiU
4.) This game IS A SEQUEL, if you think otherwise you are wrong, and here is why:
•New Characters are here
•New Stages are here
•Completely revamped battle mechanics/features
•Completely revamped UI
•New Animations for many of the characters.
•New balancing techniques for many characters
•New Final Smash system
•New Items
These not only take what Smash 4 had and improved upon them but also added a ton of new features and content. This game IS a Sequel and if you’re just saying “ER MAH GURD ITS A PORT” simply because you’re salty because the WiiU community was small and you think of yourself in some form of morally superior position then you have to grow up.

They confirmed that Yoshi on Switch was being delayed for more development time to 2019. So Yoshi is waiting until next year.

JoseTabuu I can kinda understand why Wooly World took long because of the complex art style, but a Yoshi game with a somewhat regular art style really shouldn’t take this long.
Well, there is no longer that much of a use for Nintendo to put Yoshi in 2018 because the year is kinda filled up enough for them.
I think FE was delayed so it wouldn’t be overshadowed by other holiday releases same with Yoshi I guess...
TweekPark You are assuming yourself. Just because Nintendo PR states that said game is being pushed back for development time doesn't necessarily meant it needed to be. Nintendo PR can easily spin the truth, since delaying any game can naturally give them more time to develop the game.

Ridley has been in the intro for Melee, constant trophies, a boss in Subspace, and a stage presence in Wii U. This character has been requested way longer and was much more deserving a spot especially with Metroid only having one rep since the beginning (no ZSS doesn't count) sorry fam.
I'm just going to say this. This is an off year. Reason? SO MANY releases last year. The rest are so early in development, when they were announced, they couldn't even show a cinematic trailer! And in all things being even, smash bros? It's arguably nintendo's best selling franchise, even beating out 3d mario, etc.
And yes, I'm a smash fan, but even then, this e3 was only for this year (minus a few exceptions)

Chris Griffin, that's completely fair, but I was mostly looking at the home consoles. I don't even need to look to tell you that melee sold better than pokemon Colosseum :P I was looking at the Gamecube and wii, namely (64 is a tad too old to really apply, and the wiiu/3ds was a weird story). And Jeyd, both those times. I have varying numbers for melee, but it sold up to 1 million more copies than super mario sunshine, and brawl sold only a little more than galaxy 1.
Chrona Trigger You can't compare Pokemon Colleseum to Super Smash Brothers Melee since one is a spin off and the other is a main game. The best selling Super Smash Brothers game (Brawl-14 million) has sold less than the worse selling Pokemon game (BW-16 million) not including remakes and third editions. Even if we did include the remakes and third editions, Pokemon still sells more. For example ORAS sold more than all the other Super Smash Brothers games including the 3DS version even though the 3DS version released much earlier than ORAS and ORAS released on the same night as the Wii U version. About Mario, the 3D Mario games so not sell as well as the 2D Mario games which sell quite a bit. New Super Mario Bros DS went to sell 30 million

Furkan Karsandi, I compared that one to melee because it was on the same console. I'm not comparing BW to melee, for example, because they are on different consoles, and different time periods. And I won't compare smash 4 for 3ds to sun/moon because of the split between two consoles schewing the numbers. Not worth getting into. But yes, I get the point.

The engine is Unreal 4, which is indeed a new engine. Most of the animations are from Sm4sh except in the case of Ganondorf.

Basically, 2018 is going to be a lot more mellow than 2017 was. We're getting Smash in December, which is definitely huge, but unless they pull an eleventh-hour reveal on us, that's really the only big thing. And that's fine; 2017 was about starting the Switch with a huge bang to get everyone's attention. Now that they've accomplished that, they're quietly slipping into normal mode with their announcements and releases and letting the Switch's momentum do the rest of the work.
Mr. Math don’t forget that they periodically have Directs with more reveals. This is not all were getting for 2018. I can tell you that.
Could be. I'm very skeptical that it will be anything Smash-level huge, though. Nintendo is not in the habit of announcing something that big and releasing it within 6 months. 8 or 9 months has been the absolute minimum. Games that do release faster are generally smaller things like Mario Party, or ports like Mario Kart 8.
I’m hoping some time from now to December they announce a Mario Maker port or sequel, if not in that time I hope some time early 2019. Mario maker sold well, and it was on the Wii U, image how well it would sell on the Switch.
Now Mario Maker sounds like something that *could* still happen in 2018. It isn't really huge the way Smash or Mario Kart are, so 6 months seems reasonable. But it was still pretty popular, which makes it a good choice to bring back. The main issues are how to deal with the touch screen functions and the online system, but I'm sure they could figure it out.
Looking back on this comment, I am so glad 2018 didn't become "normal mode" for Nintendo. 2020 removed for obvious reasons, it looks like the Switch is having a lot better off years than 2018.

I really liked Mario Party and Smash, but there wasn't much for me beyond that. I'm looking at indies this year, Pode looks really good and is coming out this month.

Objection Sustained I don’t get how people don’t understand that E3 to Nintendo isn’t as important as it is for the other companies. This was just another direct. And they have another one in a month or two. They have multiple Directs a year. No one does Directs but Nintendo. I'm excited for smash but the lack of a "one more thing" was so disappointing. Fire emblem looks amazing but I expected more, considering they kept us in the dark for SO long. it was an ok direct but all the smash was like watching/reading patch notes. "Look! The wii fit developers weren't satisfied with our face model! Are ya happy now?"

The fundamental changes to the universal mechanics make it impossible to reasonably call it a port.
It's basically a definitive edition for every game in the series. Hard to call it a port of any specific smash game. According to a lot of people who played it at e3, it seemed to feel different that smash 4. One major thing was that it is allegedly faster than Smash 4. I would say it's closer to a new game than a port.

I don't understand why everyone is up in arms about Nintendo's E3 this year. We are getting Mario Party and Smash, Fire Emblem is being worked on along with Metroid and Pokemon. Animal Crossing will come in due time. And of course, OCTO EXPANSION COMES OUT TODAY AND SPLATOON 2 IS GETTING FREE UPDATES UNTIL THE END OF THE YEAR! Just because it wasn't shown off doesn't mean it's not coming. Nintendo has directs throughout the year to show off their games even if it wasn't at E3. We will get everything within a couple years, people just need to chill out and give Nintendo the time they need to make the games we want.
Steven Plunkett you’re really missing the point of E3. Like I kind of want to see gameplay or at least mention of metroid, animal crossing, and fire emblem. It isn’t about “oh it’s coming”, because maybe it won’t came until 2020, 2021, 2022, I want to see the game’s progress.

My only wish for this Smash was to have every character in it. And no, it's not a port. Updated graphics and redesign for almost everyone, new mechanics, items, stages, etc. It's a new game and only a non smash player would say it's THE SAME GAME. Like they'd say melee and brawl are the same.

I Hope they do ... but It will be a better sale if they get us to buy This Smash and Another. One full of old heros and one full of new heros ... the fact that from what I see, were only getting one new addition onto this roster ... tell me.. they probally have some on a back burner and in or completed development. As A sales man I'd DLC costumes, maps, modes and even new objects but not characters... why would we buy another Smash, if we cant get all the new characters on download?

It's confirmed a new game. They don't consider new smash games sequels. This was built from the ground up and guess what. Every previous game reused assets. Technically they just reuse assets whereas this one as they've actually updated textures. And they're holding back on showing new stuff. They're saving that to build up hype.

To be fair, Smash could totally be used as a way to catapult Arms a bit. People see Springman in Smash and that might boost Arms sales. It is a little surprising, though.

Yeah, I saw that one on the Smash Bros. subreddit. I would say it was pretty impressive since that leak was less than 24 hours away from the actual reveal.

Nintendo announced 35 games coming to Switch. 10 of those games new games coming. Another 10 are 3rd party. The other 15 are games that we knew about. That’s definitely not a failure. Plus there’s many more games that are coming that we know about that they did not show. Should they of shown some more games & gone less on Smash? Possibly. But looking objectively at everything that Nintendo announced I’d say that was a really solid E3.

Well it turns out nobody likes this E3 as well. Because it's so hard to actually enjoy something. This E3 was pretty good. Everyone wanted Smash, everyone got Smash, and luckily it's not a port. I don't know why people thought it would be a port, but it's probably just people not being able to enjoy stuff anymore. We still have another character that hasn't been revealed, so who knows, maybe we can still get a baby Waluigi.

Fire Emblem was initially stated as 2018, Yoshi officially has been delayed to 2019 but I’m not sure if they ever officially said 2018 for that.

I'm sort of disappointed that they didn't announce any other titles like Pikmin 4, new 3DS Zelda etc. Actually, they didn't bring up the 3DS at all this E3, which is kind of strange when you think about it because there are still first party games coming to 3DS...
(Little Animal Crossing "why is it not here yet, I wish we had something!" rant, don't mind me.)
The salt in the wound for me is that they keep using Animal Crossing-related assets everywhere (Mario Kart and Smash models, music in presentations and other videos), but have not even said the words "Animal Crossing for the Switch is in development", at any point, and it has been six years since New Leaf came out in Japan, so it HAS to be around the corner... But I've been thinking that for over a year and a half, at this point.
So far, before we even have a whisper on AC Switch, these things have happened:
- Metroid Prime 4 has been announced;
- The Elder Scrolls 6 has been announced;
- One main Fallout game has been released, another one (spin-off?) has been announced;
- Ridley has been added to Smash;
- One Smash Bros game was released (two if you count the 3DS version), and another one is on the horizon;
- Mario Party actually went back to its roots, which a lot of people thought would never happen;
- Pokemon X&Y, ORAS, SuMo and USUM have been released, the Let's Go spin-offs are coming soon and new main games are in development for reveal next year;
- Two main series Fire Emblem games have been released, and a new one is revealed and confirmed for next year;
- And a lot more I could go on about, but everyone gets the point by now.
Basically, I'm not even mad, I'm just... surprised. I'm also happy I never made any bets on when a new AC would be announced, because I would have consistently lost everything. Also, it's very easy to say "but look, they made Amiibo Festival!", which was made by the Mario Party 9 and 10 devs, so that's irrelevant. You can also claim that Pocket Camp is a thing, but it's also as much of a proper Animal Crossing game as Paper Mario Sticker Star is a proper Paper Mario game (which is to say, not at all - also, if the team making Mario Odyssey started focusing entirely on Super Mario Run and kept delaying Odyssey, that wouldn't have made any sense, would it?) - so that's one more irrelevant thing out of the way. The most relevant part is that the dev team for Animal Crossing, from what we've heard, is shared between AC and Splatoon - but... why? Why not hire more people to handle both series, considering they're completely different games for completely different demographics? It just isn't logical to me.
And I'm saying this as someone who has 400 hours in Splatoon 2, mind you. I just think they could have logically divided teams better to have more work on AC Switch sooner, considering it's still one of their biggest series, despite not being on Mario or Zelda level. It's big enough to have gotten 400 collectible cards and a metric-ton of merch, right? So it's just... odd, to me. We'll see AC Switch sooner or later, I'm just genuinely, honestly surprised we haven't seen a speck of it yet.

Daemon X Machina is the best thing I have seen at this E3. The dev team is STACKED! This has to yield an amazing game.
Daemon X Machina is nothing compared to Metal Wolf Chaos, an original Xbox game released only in Japan and developed by FromSoftware has been remastered and is coming to Xbox One after years of growing a cult hood status. I mean, who doesn't want to play a game where your the president of the United States and gets to deal justice in a freaking mech?

We get 3-4 of these directs every year, so unlike last years E3 where they were looking 2-3 years ahead with Metroid, Pokemon RPG and apparently Yoshi lol. This year though Nintendo focused on things that are coming out in the next 6 months, they said that a couple of times within the show. I understand why a lot of the fan base is a little disappointed but we're probably getting another one of these in October/November. It was clear that this one was focused on the Smash community and in the past they have generally focused a Direct on 1 or 2 specific games.
While I would've loved to see Metroid footage; a Pikmin or Animal Crossing reveal on top of what we got with Fire Emblem, Mario Party or Smash, It's not out of the realm of possibility that we'll see these things being announced in the next 4-8 months. I think if this wasn't an E3 direct then maybe people would be reacting differently, this is just all my opinions though

For some reason Street Figher Alpha is considered a series of games that just happen to have the same characters and sprites with updated stages, music, roster, etc. and revamped mechanics, but this game is considered just a port. If you call Dark Souls Remastered "just a port", you're justified in saying so. If you call Smash Ultimate "just a port", you have no idea what a port is.
Smash bros ultimate is NOT a port, it's like a celebration of all smash titles running on the same engine as the Wii U one.

In all seriousness the game count was low, but there was still a lot. If nothing appealed to you I can understand disappointment, but that really isn't anyone's fault. Mario Tennis, Smash, Mario Party and TWEWY are gonna be 4 massive games. Octopath traveler and the new xenoblade dlc is actually a standalone game that Xenoblade 2 holders are getting at a discount basically. So if you don't like smash, Mario sports games, Party games, rpg's or mario rabbids, than ya I can see how you could be disappointed. But that is hardly because of a lack of upcoming titles.
It was confirmed to be a sequel during an interview, plus it is using a different engine than smash 4 and had altered character models and a completely different UI so it is definitely a sequel.
