READ ME FIRST: The Moog - Buchla Piano Bar uses infrared sensors -- a flashlight let us play it in real time! A brilliant alternative controller designed by Don Buchla and the late Bob Moog. The black keys on my piano were too short - I couldn't get it working properly on my piano. But enjoy what we were able to do with a flashlight!

Hey Artakas - I had to return it, because it would not work due to the length of my black keys. At least we were able to film this short video! Thanks for watching! - Alfred
Since it is infrared, you could use a remote or a laser pointer for higher accuracy than a flashlight.
I leave it set up with the Piano Bar module connected as needed as sort of a patch bay. I use the sounds from that plus I connected a Roland CP JD800 to it.
The nature of the Yamaha CP80 design does not allow the piano bar to rest directly against the "fall board" or whatever it's called so the bar itself tends to bow a bit in the center. I have a cassette taple case wedged between the piano and the bar to keep it stable. A more particular person could easily make a small woodblock as a wedge
I just got one and it seems to work fine on the Yamaha CP80 in case anyone is wondering, as I was
referencing the YamahaCP80 that I mentioned I use the Piano Bar with.... Well, it's been over a year now I guess. It works fine but I haven't really done a lot with it.
Yes, a shame it didn't work - and good point about having it on a dark stage! By the way, I did buy a new piece of hardware, the Jazzmutant Lemur controller -- so you WILL be seeing a video on that soon! Thanks for watching, and the comments! Alfred.
So, I can just turn up or down the volume of either or all 3 devices, Yamaha piano, Moog module, JD800. I haven't had much trouble keeping the piano bar itself adjusted but from time to time it needs to be raised or lowered and the calibrated which is simple.
There was a firmware update to the Piano Bar that addressed the "black key" issue. We updated ours, and it works just GREAT. It's a shame you didn't keep yours. They are collector's items now.
What is this powerful wizardry!
Very cool video!!
you should have just put a white sticker or something on the black keys where the sensor would hit them end of problem...
Hi Pro - it is amazing - however, it just didn't work with my 'school upright' piano. Bummer. I really didn't want to return it at all!
Hi, thanks a lot for this video. I'm desperately searching for a Piano Bar, but it seems disappeared in eBay and similar. So, sorry for the direct question: maybe are you going to sell your Bar? Or do you know someone that could sell me one? Thanks
Hi Adriano - Actually, I had to return my Piano Bar, many years ago. For whatever reason, it never correctly worked on my Piano. My original dealer was Sweetwater Music, again, mine was returned many years ago. - Alfred.
Thanks a lot for your rapid reply. Sadly I CAN'T find that Bar anymore around the world! I can understand that nowadays something like PNOscan does the job far better, but you can't go around for doing recitals riddling all pianos for hire...
Does anyone know of alternative to this porduct? As far as I know it's discontinued. I would loved to retrofit my acoustic piano with midi.
hahaha that was insane
