You are missing some pages. Goku just wanted to see how strong Gohan got by taking the punch. Other than that Gohan couldn't touch him the rest of the time. Gohan started to panic and get upset. Goku then stops the match so to gauge his power against everyone else's.
IMO I think Goku was seeing what Gohan had to offer in his Beast form all along. I believe Goku has leveled up his MUI and we just got a glimpse of it. Just my thoughts.

The writing in Dragon ball has fallen off a cliff entirely at this point. Gohan is the Half-Saiyan equivalent to Frieza. He can grow exponentially fast, especially when encountering strong fighters. Gohan can just grow very fast. He's been blessed with potential. It might take others long and hard training (Goku & Vegeta), or wishes (Granolah & Gas), but gohan just has the potential to reach great heights with tremendous speed. What might take others a year to master, some just learn in half the time.

I guess people forgot that Gohan was the original “potential man” before Broly. Although he trained more in the past, he still invented ssj2 and surpassed everyone in the cell saga at 12 years old. Gohan usually bounces back with a little training, so he’s always been able to keep up in the end.

Gohan is the Half-Saiyan equivalent to Frieza. He can grow exponentially fast, especially when encountering strong fighters. Gohan can just grow very fast. He's been blessed with potential. It might take others long and hard training (Goku & Vegeta), or wishes (Granolah & Gas), but gohan just has the potential to reach great heights with tremendous speed. What might take others a year to master, some just learn in half the time.
Goku can still win. He can use UI + Kaioken. Game over.
