@@ramonwill3543 I did my homework. I never mentioned where the engine comes from. It's a joint venture within renault/mitsubishi/nissan. At the end of the day, it's not a Mercedes. That's why no one bought them. Premium price tag for a "non premium" pickup.
You don't need a catch can you need to blank the EGR off. The soot is the problem, when you remove the oil from the soot you're turning it into dry abrasive crap that is even worse because it does more than just block your intake up.
All good and well until the car manufacturer claims that its caused the issue and voids warranty. Nissan navaras for example the rear main seal blowing out, Nissan claim the relief on the catch cans has not allowed it to vent and has caused back pressure
Lot's of opinions - I have mine, and voiced it - but then I remember when fumes went straight to the road, so I'd rather play it safe and catch it rather than burning it!
With the utmost respect. There’s no way catch cans are a mandatory addition. A well engineered and functional engine, operated as the engineer intended should be fine. Some people certainly have issues, but I don’t personally know a single person who would have benefited by one. Same with additional water separating filters if the OME has a separator.
We'll just have to disagree there - the engineers design engines to pass emissions standards - there is and never has been a reason to feed oil fumes back through a motor. And that is not good. I've seen it in my own 76 where the intake was halved after 70K - when I bought i -and in several other vehicles, usually with 100K or more. Agree on the extra fuel filter with reservations - that being if it's easier to see and drain then it's a benefit. And the TT filter is a much finer one - I like that. At the end of the day I agree with ouy that most problems are maintenance related - and some dealerships are the worst for that.
@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY yeah like I said. I’m certainly not saying hard and fast that catch cans are no good. In some circumstances they may be 💯 necessary. I just don’t think that they are a must for everyone. Those vapours (in theory) should be completely goneskis if working at optimum temps for sufficient times. I’ve had three diesel 4wds… they run at optimum temps 99% of their running life .. no issues with the inlet at all. All my work vehicles are the same, they run all day, rarely doing cold starts and no issues. But different engines are gonna operate differently. I’m just saying that they are not a mandatory addition. I’d personally wait until i saw direct evidence that i needed it, before spending the money. And I’ve heard some engineers say, that PCVs and EGRs are actually relied upon to operate as the intended. I know what they do and why they exist…straight up… my engine runs perfectly with out it.
They're a good thing actually - but I'd never 'endorse' one, and would never buy one either. That's just personal - Mahindra is India and they've always been on our side.
Yes I know. I know and respect John having worked with him but never seen him in a workshop on the tools - and I'd point out as he does, in reverse, that his site is funded by sales of NEW vehicles.
with grossly over priced toyotas there's starting to be more an more curry cruisers and even chinese 4wd's on the road, plus sponsored or not is the curry cruiser was garbage i seriously doubt Roothy would still have it, he's just never seemed to be the type, plus if the mines are starting to use them then they can't be sh*t
@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY Well anyone who buys a new 4WD usually is very keen to get it off-road, you've had yours a while and I haven't seen many trips with it? I'm beginning to suspect that it isn't as capable as you make out? Of course, I don't own one and likely never will, I like older 4WD's so, we're all waiting to see, I guess. The problem I see is that most 4WD manufacturers (USA Excepted) make the trucks for the Aussie environment, Mahindra have just imported an Indian designed truck for the ute market and I reckon that's its issue right there.
@@Vacublaster1 what it means is if the mines are using them then they must be a reliable an solid rig, time is money for the mines and they wont put up with shitboxes breaking down all the time and can't haul a load . the average 4wder wants reliability and not be charged a million dollars for an old farm truck like 76-78 series cruisers that doesn't even come with cup holders an shit seats
Look up John Cadogan, he's burnt more bridges than any other car journalist in the country. He's also an automotive engineer and makes a very cogent argument against catch cans. He would also turn around that accusation and say the endorsement of catch cans comes mostly from ignorance OR people sponsored by the makers of superfluous and gratuitous ad ons for cars. I have a shitbox 2010 zd30 patrol that's never had a catch can, it has over 350 000 Ks on it now and hasn't grenaded. Plenty of people with catch cans have had their motors blow. There is very little evidence that they make a positive difference in modern well designed engines. They might void your warranty however or if you get a shit catch can blow out your oil seals.
I know Cadoges, have done for thirty years - and if you look you'll see his site is paid for indirectly thru new car sales - he's a good operator, but you need to go talk to mechanics to find the problems caused by feeding goop back thru the inlet.
@JOHN ROOTH thank you for the reply. I appreciate where you're coming from but my understanding is that it really depends on the vehicle in question and how it's used and what else you've done to it. Certainly a bad catch can is much worse than no catch can as my best friend who runs his own mechanic shop has had a few cars blow their PCR valve from a bad catch can. Most engines have an oil vapour separator on them that works essentially as a catch can that returns the oil to the crank and I've had just asany mechanics advise against catch cans on new engines as those in favour. My old shitbox ZD30 patrol has other mods but no catch can and gunk build up over 300 000Ks has been pretty minimal when I gave it a big clean out and I've seen plenty of blown ZDs with knackered PCR valves with catch cans so I remain unconvinced. It's something I probably would do to an older diesel but I think I'd rather just pay for a deep clean of the intake manifold amd valves every couple of years on a more modern engine. EGR systems have gotten a lot better with newer CRD engines too with less soot clogging shit up which probably mitigates a lot of the problem too.
Thanks Roothy. Like you I think the Mahindra will be exremely popular once the wave comes in. Remember when Landcruisers first came to Australia, everyone said nah, wont sell here. Well , I think this is history in the making again, and its going to happen .

Oh I do like your program, but it you new ute designed for Australia conditions? I drive a Mercedes X class ute and just love it. It has the widest and longest carriage range, plenty of horse power. And it is a MB which is the most comfortable ride in style hehe cheers
Sorry to burst your bubble but it's a Nissan navara.
There's a reason why Mercedes stopped selling them.
You can still buy a MB ute only with a V6 engine
@@ramonwill3543 Propably leftovers. They stopped production in 2020.
It is a Citroen engine if you do your homework
@@ramonwill3543 I did my homework.
I never mentioned where the engine comes from.
It's a joint venture within renault/mitsubishi/nissan.
At the end of the day, it's not a Mercedes. That's why no one bought them. Premium price tag for a "non premium" pickup.
Sounds fully sic.
You don't need a catch can you need to blank the EGR off. The soot is the problem, when you remove the oil from the soot you're turning it into dry abrasive crap that is even worse because it does more than just block your intake up.
Great content 👌
Greetings from south africa 🇿🇦
Check out the karoo dusk fx4 for the SA Market
Thats exhaust is sexy as! Love the welds and mandrel bends
First item I installed on my 2016 FJ Cruiser was a catch can.
I'll take one of those exhausts
The mahindra looks promising but that efs suspension, nah I'll give that a miss after past experiences with their shocks not lasting very well at all.
Yep, their shocks aren't great if pounded off-road but none of the stock modern stuff is. I've replaced mine and had no dramas since.
It would be nice if you could get a long range fuel tank for the Mahindra
All good and well until the car manufacturer claims that its caused the issue and voids warranty. Nissan navaras for example the rear main seal blowing out, Nissan claim the relief on the catch cans has not allowed it to vent and has caused back pressure
That's sounds like dodgy Nissan stuff to me - I'll investigate, thanks for that mate!
Roothy everyone bangs on about a Catch can? Is this a deficiency in this vehicle?
Lot's of opinions - I have mine, and voiced it - but then I remember when fumes went straight to the road, so I'd rather play it safe and catch it rather than burning it!
Sounds like the Doves that live in my garden.
You're getting curryed away with it! 🤙
hahahahaha!!!
Not much point having a catch can if the egr hasn’t been blocked off
@@gtbtp2036 … not sure how you come to that theory.
@@operation4wheelz strange
roothy would endorse a greatwall ute for a dollar
They're a good thing actually - but I'd never 'endorse' one, and would never buy one either. That's just personal - Mahindra is India and they've always been on our side.
09:55 Bloody fruit bats 😂
I'll come out to play john
Another $10,000 or $20,000 and that Mahindra will be sweet
You ARE kidding aren't you Rooth? Like you said, the vehicle has to get you home. No solid front axle, the first red flag!
just wondering what new vehicle has a solid front axle these days apart from some big trucks?
@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY all the 70 series Landcruisers have a solid front axle Roothy.
Of course you're right! Sorry, I should have qualified that - I meant in this class. Well picked!!!
wait, the mines are now using curry cruisers?!?! hmm if that's true that's huge news!
I know where to turn up
But big note John Cadogan reckons catch cans are bull-shit..
Yes I know. I know and respect John having worked with him but never seen him in a workshop on the tools - and I'd point out as he does, in reverse, that his site is funded by sales of NEW vehicles.
@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY lil
I don't think the Mahindra will sell that well.
We'll see won't we? Maybe people will get over their prejudice and give it a go -
with grossly over priced toyotas there's starting to be more an more curry cruisers and even chinese 4wd's on the road, plus sponsored or not is the curry cruiser was garbage i seriously doubt Roothy would still have it, he's just never seemed to be the type, plus if the mines are starting to use them then they can't be sh*t
@@arronjohnston742 Yes, but the mines have a different requirement to the average 4WD owner, they are probably looking at costs more than capability.
John I'll pay you a motsa, how beautiful you are,I thought all was lost
EGR systems have gotten a lot better with newer CRD engines too with less soot clogging shit up which probably mitigates a lot of the problem too.
eww torsion bars like an older Paj....
EFS ! IN MY EXPERIENCES WITH SPRINGS and SHOCK ABSORBERS, THEY WERE SHIT PRODUCTS.
Catch cans void your warranty.
