Bjørn's Tesla Model S #1: Oslo - Trondheim Norwegian winter driving
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 гру 2024
- My very first road trip with my brand new Tesla Model S P85 Multicoat Red. The trip from Oslo to Trondheim is 535 km and has a max elevation of 1026 m. This puts the Model S on a real winter test.

It's so funny to watch this after 10 years ! 😁
Been a fan for a couple years, and I'm not sure why youtube randomly recommended a 5 year old video but I like it! Cool to see where the legend started ;-)
yea, I also got it on 2020 - 7 years later :)
Me too got this video recommneded in 21. Bjoern Nylands early videos contribute heavely to the high sale in Norway. Already the first trip shows that Telsa Model S could be a Long trip Number 1 familiy car. I ordered my own ModelS 85D 10 okt (D-day) 2014 rogether with a whole lot of other Norwegians.
A legend is b(j)orn!
Great to see this again after several years. Now Millennium Falcon is back.
Watching this video was the turning point that made me buy my first Tesla. That's more than 5 years ago now. Then one year later yet another electric car. Once you go b... electric, you never go back. Thank you for all the videos Bjørn.
Oh no - it's 6 years! OMG time flies. It's 2022 now.
Wow, it’s been over 10 years already. What a journey it’s been!!
Crazy to see how Tesla developed in six years.
Yes, looking back at these old videos really “hammers” (excuse the pun) home how much things have developed in 7 years now - and it’s crazy that new EVs are released to the market today that barely charge as fast as a Tesla from 7 years ago!
Crazy to see how Tesla developed in nine years.
@bjornnyland you have improved greatly in the last nine years. I have been watching your videos since november 2020.
It's great to see how it all started for the second time. In this video Björn was a noob, now he's an expert about EVs, such a big change, he's also a lot more confident in front of the camera and makes better music choices - but I miss the days when every video was an adventure!
Wow! What a nostalgic video! I remember watching you back in the day... this is what got me excited about Teslas and made us buy a S85 -2014... now we own a 2017 Model X. Super happy!
Please bring back the winter roadtrip videos. With lots of shieeeeeet and ramen noodles and extreme winter weather :)
OMG! Its been nearly 3 years since I subscribed and started watching your videos. You came a really long way! Keep it up! I'll rewatch this video just to bring back some nostalgic moments :D Take care Bjorn!
This comment also reminds me that I have to get back ASAP to making road trip videos again.
MrLocalman123 me too...Back then Bjørn had only around 2000 subscribers..
How wonderfult to see this "retro" video with the good old Tesla UI
THANK YOU! Finally a good electric vehicle review in cold with crappy weather and eleveation issues! 4 D Win!
Omg I was holding my breath from like 21:30 to 23:00 for you! :-) thankyou for such a real TESLA video. Even under some of the worst conditions I've seen so far the car performed fantastically.
Agreed! :D
Hi Bjorn, thank you for the video. By far, this is the best and most realistic one I've seen so far. It gave me a real perspective of what issues one might come across when owning a Tesla. Thx.
Thank you for the feedback :) When do you get your Tesla?
I am more leaning toward Model X for the size and function.
Just wanted to say thank you for the videos and I hope they continue . I am 23 year s old and saving as much as possible for thst car .
Much appreciate the time and effort you put into filming and editing.
Cheers from Canada
Thank you for the feedback :) I will make more videos as soon as I get home from vacation.
Watching from 9 years in the future. Did you get a Model S?
Hands down, the best Tesla video out there!
Thank you :) I'm flattered now!
This was a great tutorial/ owner experience video. I didn't think o would watch it in its entirety, but you were entertaining. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching :)
Michael, I though I was just going to watch just the quick 30 seconds of the clip but I'm with you. The part were you were down to zero was scary...
This just poped up in my recommended. Been watching you Bjorn for years. Great to see this classic video :D
Very cool road trip, my friend ... reminds me of all the road trips my wife and I go on ... music, smooth road, cheap snacks, good company ... best times of my life ... thanks for sharing
Thank you for the feedback :) Yes, I also love being on the road. It's a nice sense of freedom.
To see this first Tesla road trip video from the master "Tesla Bjørn" is so cool after knowing your last 2 years of youtube development.
Bjørn, all the best for the next 5 years.
My wife and I test drove the P85 and the guy told us not to drop it to zero. It's nice to see that it has a little juice left and as a back of of the back up, the regen helped out as well. I was cracking up when you say.... "give me the juice" lol. very nice clip.
Thank you for watching :)
please keep making tesla videos, loving the blog touch to it, real funny and informative too, loved the suspense when the battery was drained !
A few independent websites have reviewed my videos. It's worth checking out what they write about this crazy Norwegian :D

I guess I am :D I never thought my videos would be that useful.
Bjørn Nyland Dude, your videos are AWESOME! I've looked for a long time for videos of people just driving a Tesla like it's an actual car instead of racing them around and showing off or going on test drives. It's very nice seeing some real world uses by someone who's just driving it as a car. And hearing your experience as just an owner is also very cool since it's not likely I'll be able to buy one until they figure out how to make their cheaper consumer models.
babybirdhome Thank you for the feedback :) Yes, it was my intention to make Tesla videos as an independent and regular user not sponsored by anyone :D
Ha ha yeah! I noticed that! I was about to bring them to your attention but it seems you're aware of them. It may help that I post your videos here and there when sites try to show how Model S MAY perform in winter conditions. I'd post your video show how it DOES perform in cold winter conditions...
Link340 Good point! :D
Lol. Was totally holding my breath when you were going back to Dombås! Like watching a thriller.
I'm glad you like it :D
thanks youtube for putting this in my recommendations, 2013 bjørn was already awesome
It's still just as nice to see your first video with the Millennium Falcon that is now back with you.
started watching his videos around his Model X tug of war and winter videos. soon subscribed. Now I did start watching his old Model S videos for fun around the holidays.
Most amazing moment in this video: that ginormous frunk! It truly is HUGE. :)
I just wanted to add also that I'm really enjoying your Tesla videos. I think it is because you give a great view of what a new user would go through or wouldn't realize until later on. The maps, graphs and other statistics are a nice touch and make it look professional.
Thank you for the feedback :)
That was a great and very useful video on the Model S. The price is worth buying because you won't have any expense filling up gas. I totally love this car!
Agreed :)
So cool to watch the Millenium Falcon 9 yrs later in 2023. tried to scroll through your videos to get to your fist and gave up when it took like ten minutes to get just through the years 2023-2021 😂🎉 I onder whether this was the first video ever that you did.
Millennium Falcon, welcome back
Thank you so much, Bjorn! I am in California to test drive and maybe buy. I liked the 22 minute mark where you about ran out of charge - amazing that you made it to the station. Looks like a great car - nothing but improvements to charging will come!
Thank you for the feedback :)
This is still my favorite Tesla video
Man what a nostalgic video! You’ve come a long way and your fame is well deserved!
Old skool Bjorn. Class
Thanks Bjorn! It is great to see real life use of a Tesla Model S. Winter driving is on top of my list and from what you have shown the Model S performs really well.
Thank you for the feedback :)
Very helpful video. Dombås is not where it is all at, but it is where most of it passes by.
Crazy how much that has changed in these few years when it comes to EVs and what cars you see on the road here in Norway. One of few EVs back then on the road. Now they are everywhere
Wow, it was hard to "put down" this video. Something about your Tesla videos that is just addicting. Great job! Please keep it up. We'll be watching.
Thank you for the feedback :)
Thanks for making this quality video. Great job. I was happy for you that you could reach the SC in time with about 0 km left. Good lesson, that taking a little bit more time for the uploading can give you a warmer car in the winter and no stress for range until the next SC.
CONGRATULATIONS!!! One year Millenium Falcon, 90 000km, a lot of fun and great videos - thank you sooo much! Enjoy your Tesla-Party today and don´t forget the one-year-celebration-film :-)))))))
Greetings from Berlin
Chris
Wow!!!
Nothing like watching your roadtrips. Keep em coming
Wow you were definitely one of the Tesla pioneers back then.
Love your early videos
Loved your movie! As an electric car enthusiast I converted my Toyota Hilux in 2007 long before it was possible to buy something like this beautiful model S. I guess what I like most about electric cars is probably the sport of the thing: the planning and charging and conserving energy to achieve various drives. Interestingly my lithium powered hilux achieves about 250watt hours per kilometre too when driven very economically. I couldn't help but notice your speed when nearly running out of charge. Slowing right down helps a lot and I thought if it was me I would be driving really slowly! Thanks for taking us on a wonderfully exciting and fascinating electric car adventure.
Yes, I also learned that slowing down makes the biggest difference. Thank you for the feedback :)
Excellent video Bjorn. It reminds me of our winters in Canada. Regrettably, there are no Tesla Superchargers available at the moment. I will test winter driving with slower third party charging stations. Thank you for posting so many helpful videos...warm regards from Canada.
What kind of charging speeds do you get then? 22 kW?
Wow! When you halve your speed you double your range. That cold air is thick and harder to push through. Great car and fantastic video. I'm impressed. Thanks
Thank you for the feedback :) The density doesn't affect the range that much. But cold air moving faster over the wind screens will cool down the windows faster. So the car will use more energy to keep the cabin heated. That drains a lot of energy.
Bjørn Nyland
drag force D=Cd*(1/2*p*v^2)*A
ecomodder.com/forum/showthread.php/temperature-drag-relation-24454.html
The v^2 shows the drag force D goes up as the square of velocity, but linearly with air density p. If we double the speed we get 4x the drag force D for half the time for the same distance. So halving the speed will double the range. I've measured it. It's true.
True the air density has only a 10% reduction in range, but my little MiEV with only 16 kWh of battery encourages my to think about these things.
Nice music, nice car and a nice video!
I have enjoyed watching this.
Thank you for watching :)
First time you ever supercharged... hard to imagine the Tesla wizard not ever to supercharge before. Also your Style is there already! Nice. Memories.
Thank you for sharing this video. The added drama not knowing if you're going to make it to the charging station was a good experience for me to learn. I've had my Tesla for about four months now and I'm still worried about running out of energy. I try to always have more than enough energy.
This experience was very valuable for me. After that trip, I always planned my route and added extra margin in case of bad weather or congestion. I have never been that close ever again :)
It is nice to watch after 9 years :) Bjorn, you are so much better now, but it wasn't bad at all back then. Maybe not as crazy as today ;)
ahh classic Bjorn such a memory throwback.
great video and nice trip, it was my pleasure to watch...
Thank you for the feedback :)
Cool, thank you all for the work done, it is nice to see. This is my favorite car, fell in love, I hope that she will also be my first car, a dream to buy TESLA check her Russian winter. That's just one problem. In my city there are no charging stations Car Closest in Moscow, and it is 200km. I have to charge the car at home.
I can't imagine how I'm going to travel by car in my country.
Ты можешь заряжаться где только есть розетки :)
Best Tesla range video I've seen yet. Good job!
Thanks Bjørn - great video. By the way - no need to exit the car when you reboot the 17" screen.
And I agree that display brightness is the best setting for the scroll wheel. I've had my Model S for nearly a year and I quickly settled on this setting.
Thank you for the tip :) A Tesla rep told me that I had to exit. But from my experience Tesla enthusiasts usually gives more correct information. So by holding the two buttons I only reboot the screen and not the whole car? What happens if I do this while driving?
Bjørn Nyland There's no problem rebooting while driving. You'll lose the 17" display for a while (obviously) but all the driving controls continue to work. There are a few seconds when the indicator (turn signal) sounds disappear, but your indicators are actually still working fine.
You can also reboot the instrument cluster while driving, but you lose the speedo, etc. for a few seconds.
There is no such thing as "rebooting the whole car" - unless service do it. You can reboot the 17" display (and associated computer) and the instrument cluster. That's all you'll ever need to do unless something serious goes wrong. Service can reboot the individual control modules - such as the door handle controllers.
Thank you for the info :) That's good to know.
Bjørn Nyland One other tip - use the seat heaters rather than the cabin heater. it is MUCH more efficient on power use.
nickjhowe I will :)
Congrats on your new MS and the - somewhat scary - trip! Nicely done! "Gimme the juice!" made me laugh... those violin sounds made the 0km scenes REALLY scary! :)
Thank for the feedback :) Yes, it was a scary moment!
Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed watching your experience with the Tesla. I have to admire that machine!
Top job on the video editing too!
Thank you for the feedback :)
Cool video. Here's a tip for saving range. Turn on the seat warmers in addition to turning the climate control down. The seat warmers use less energy. Also, lowering your speed works pretty well too. The optimal speed is somewhere around 25-35 mph.
Thank you for the tip :) Since that last video, I discovered that Range Mode does wonders. By reducing the speed by 10-20 km/h, setting temperature to 19 C and using Range Mode the consumption went from 220+ Wh/km to less than 200 Wh/km.
Great video! That was really cool to see you still make it to supercharger station running on extremely low energy.
+Chris Fletcher Thank you for watching :)
I really enjoyed watching this road trip especially in these conditions.
I'm glad you like the video :)
I really like your video's about the Tesla trips. Keep 'em coming!
Thank you for the feedback :)
The early days! You rock, Bjørn! :)
I'll admit, I've learned some new things about the Tesla Model_S from this video. So far I've seen 3 Model_S's on Canadian roads. Most recent was this morning on my way to work. It was around -10°C. BTW, nice video!
I'll wait on it with much interest, because I think the Model S will be my next car. Greetings from Germany
Good choice my friend! And by the time you get it you will get power folding mirror and other goodies :D
So it’s been four years, did you end up getting this car.
My friend told me that Norway is a beautiful country and people living there are very good for each other and also for tourists :)) I hope one day i will visit Norway :D Greetings from Poland ! :)
greetings from Malaysia! nice to know the batteries work well under pressure with the cold weather.. I wonder how it'll work in our hot tropical climate..
It should work great in hot tropical climate. After all, Model S was designed to work in hot California. Many of the modifications to cold weather was done after the initial release in 2012.
wow, you are brave to drive this car in norway in the winter. i have driven there and you need a robust car for those roads, i think. wery interesting video, thank you for sharing your experience.
Great videos Bjorn. i cant believe i watched all your vids. they are that good :)
Thank you for watching them :)
Bjørn best Video ever !!!!!
Hoppas på fler filmer snart!!
Tex värma upp en kall bil med appen etc!
Tack
Thank you a lot for this video! Very useful to have a better idea of the Tesla S.
"I just hope I don't run out of electricity and freeze and die"
Haha, morbid man!
Nice trip, good recorded) Thanks Bjorn from Azerbaijan)
Thank you for the feedback :) Wow, so many fans from all over the world!
I love your car, Amazing Technology !
Thank you :)
At 3:43 it seems to be charging at 100 kW (362 volts * 278 amps). For comparison a hair dryer should be around 1,5 kW, in other words, that is some serious juice going through that thick Super Charger station cable : )
Oh, yeah. And that's the old superchargers. The new ones deliver up to 118 kW.
Interseting live report of winter driving with an electric car. I love the scene with just 2 km left. in the batteries.
This just randomly popped up in my UA-cam home feed recommendations, and not only do I get to see their skeuomorphic UI they used to have before they completely phased it out with V9 (I think), I also get to see the elusive early Aero wheels they had before they tried again with them for the Model 3, at least according to an article I stumbled upon.
Loved the video, altho I got anxious when you were running REALLY low on power. I bought Tesla stock a couple of years ago after reading about it in Wired magazine, and would love to buy a Model S, but my wife won't let me. We live in Upstate New York (lots of snow); maybe your video will change her mind.
I hope my video will change her mind :) Show her the cat :P
Thank you for your honest and great review.
man that was a close call ;) Hitting 0 km just at the peak.
but thanks to regen you got some back.
cool ! rgds
Yes, it was pretty close. But I have never been that close ever again. Thanks for the feedback :)
Bjørn Nyland haha that is certainly to be an experience far worse than running out of gas... you can't just walk to the gas station and fill up the can. This is the only real negative I see with the car, however it can be countered by just not pushing the limits of the car to that end :P
But the advantage is that 220 V power is available anywhere. So in an emergency I can just ask someone nicely to plug in my car. It will take a while though. The trick is to charge when you can.
Du er best Bjørn! Jeg drømme om tesla!
Takk :)
Great video
Thank you :)
Hi Bjørn,
Great video. I live in Trondheim and my Model S is arriving in January, so this is a very relevant video. Your next video to Molde will also be very interesting to me because my wife's family lives near Kristiansund. Making that trip with a car full of people and luggage in the winter has been a big fear ever since we ordered the car.
If I can make a suggestion regarding your video: maybe you can clearly state how much charge and rated range you have before leaving and at all your charging stops. For me, at least, the information would be invaluable. Also, as many details regarding your average speed, how high your heat is set, and eg whether you preheated the battery or cabin would help give valuable insight regarding the real world range of the car in Norwegian winter conditions. Of course I realize you probably have better things to do and I appreciate what you've uploaded. But if you have the time and willingness, is for one would appreciate the addition.
Thanks again!
Thank you very much for the useful feedback. From now on I will include more stats after my videos :)
Dear Bjorn, first of all, thank you for all of your awesome videos :) Secondly, I have a question. How does the 3G connection work? I know the car contains a built-in 3G modem, but I also read somewhere, that this service is free just for only a year! Is it true? Do you have to pay for the 3G after a year, month-by-month? Oh, and another thing: does the 3G work in every European countries? Can you cross the borders without paying extra fee for having internet in different countries? Thank you for your answers in advance, and keep up making these really nice videos! :)
From what I heard, the 3G is still free. It hasn't been announced yet if it's going to change or not. So for now it will still be free. I have only tried it in Norway and Sweden and it worked fine there. I will test 3G in Europe later this year.
Can't wait to see those videos :)
Great video!!!
Brilliant video! what a great car (I have a Nissan Leaf) I have yet to drive my car in the snow, good to see you still have range anxiety even in an 85kwh electric car! looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
Retractable door handles and huge navigation system screens. I feel like an 80's guy watching some futuristic movie. LOL Thanks from the hot Brazil!
Very good video, thank you for making it and sharing your Tesla experience.
It was rather brave of you, I think, to undertale such a long trip on the first day you had the car. Most people would not do that, even with a more traditional car.
Thank you for watching :)
That's not just a car, it's an adventure.
Agreed! :D
Best car in the world, GO Tesla! Nice Video. I await the Model E and hope this will sell good !
haha you are right. it is great and selling really well! 4 years later
great documentary of trip, good job man
Thank you :)
Bjorn, realy like your videos. Tesla is an awesome car and I am glad that an young persone can afford it and drive it like it like you are ,to the full potencial. Hope to see more of your journeys . Maybe you will drive to Nordcapp.
Thank you for the feedback :) Yes, I am planning on doing a trip to Nordkapp this year. It's going to be interesting :P
After first chrging it showed 400 km and after traveling it showed 117, 400-160 = 240 and not 117, why so bad estimate of remaining battery energy (distance) ? Is it something to do with elevation or speed or any clue?
It was displaying rated range which is way too optimistic. Besides, the route from Lillehammer to Dombås has a 450 m elevation.
Bjørn Nyland Hey nice to hear from you. To be precise, the estimate was 2X optimistic, which is way too much. Also, I was biting my nails, when you were about to run out of battery. It scared the shit outta me. I wonder what you would have done, if it would have happened? Scary to imagine, in Norwegian winter!! By the way thanks for the 20 mins thriller :).
To go from paying 15 or 16Kr per litre of gas (over 9 bucks a gallon) to paying nothing has GOT to be sweet.
It's very sweet indeed :D
Great videos, very informative. Thank You!
Very nice! Good job!
Thank you =)
Hi Björn.
What kind of a tires are you running on?
Do you have one of those studded tires?
I have Bridgestone Blizzak WS-70, studdless. VERY good. Especially on a AWD/4WD car. But they are so soft that I do NOT look forward to put the summer tires on my rims. You see.
But since the Blizzak cost your head off Iðm not gonna drive on them this summer.
I use Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 studded tires. In my opinion the best tires, but I haven't tried Hakkapeliitta 8 yet.
Bjørn Nyland Har du prøvd Bridgestone Blizzak? Eksempelvis WS-70?
I really like this video Björn! :)
I'm glad you like it :)
Bjørn Nyland It's a very nice car! Hope i can own one to, in the future!
