After watching this video a few times now, the question comes to mind.. why on earth are we still driving on oil... imagine how enviromentally safe these cars would be. No more polution at all, i hope in the near future we all can drive these cars.
Brian Fernandez Burgos BlueStar/Third Generation/Model E (or whatever other moniker it has out there) is, from what I've heard anyway, a 30-40k scaled down version of the Model S...not exactly a Kia Soul or something price-wise, but still much closer to affordable. And supposedly its only a few years away...
Well currently it would be impossible for everyone to drive one tomorrow even if they were free to own. People driving cars each day consumes more energy than the national grid transports everyday. So the grid would have to transport over 100% more power each day which isn't possible without major modifications. Also power generation would have to increase by over 100% which is huge, and depending on what your local power stations run on might increase pollution, but at least it's concentrated in one place, I suppose that's good for people who live far away from it.
Thanks for sharing this Tesla experience. Great to see all the technology that is implemented in this car of the future. Fantastic to learn that an electric car can be updated by firmware in the same way as computers. Funny idea is : that the older your car, the more up-to-date features are added. I wish the owner a lot of happy moments with his beautiful Tesla Model S in my favoured colour.
What most people who don't drive manuals or shift their auto transmissions accordingly know is that using the engine, or motor in this case, to slow down the car is much more effective for slowing a car in adverse conditions than the breaks. As a performance oriented driver who "plays" on gravel and winter roads, I have learned the value of using the engine resistance for slowing down safely in situations where applying the breaks would have locked the tires or not provided enough stopping power to stop in a short distance. The regenerative breaking is a safety feature without even trying to be.
Jim Gamble If this were an essay for English class or something, OK. I still understood what he was trying to get at, though; isn't that the point of communicating? I appreciate proper spelling and grammar as much as the next guy, it's just low-priority in a scenario like this is all.
Awesome video, getting feedback right from someone that actually had to buy the car and use it as the main car of the family for some time is really useful and is the kind of thing that people need to see more, Tesla has solved everything in electric cars, the charging is still really slow at home, but oh well just plug it every night (:
A couple of years ago, my daughter & I took a test drive in the roadster in Menlo Park. She hit 60 mph when we went from the showroom to the driveway! Scared the crap out of me. It's a fun car to drive, and you hardly ever need to use the brakes because of the regenerative system; backing off of the accelerator does the job. Very quick!
I was just reading an article about this in the Silicon Chip magazine. I can't drive due to disability, but I really like the idea behind cars like this due to the amazing design and engineering and technology behind the design of cars like this. I just worry that people are going to spend so much time customising the settings to make the car work the way they want to whilst they're driving, I'd like to hope the car will prevent you from altering the settings too much while driving. I also don't think having a touch screen in a car, in a car that has physical controls you can feel what controls you're changing whilst you keep your eyes on the road, but you need to look at the touch screen to see what you're changing. I think that a car like this should have voice output to verbally tell you what's going on and what the car's doing.
agreed i was looking for that as well!! also this is the perfect opportunity for a self driving car!!! as technology increases their should be cars even disabled people could drive easily!!
He said in the video you could press most of the buttons out of memory without having to look at the display. In the video it also shows him trying to change the car settings but the system is locked because it was in "drive state".
Pretty sweet car, and I never thought I would hear myself say that about an electric. I would miss petrol powered cars, you can't beat the sound of a rumbly V8 or a raspy V12, but the future is looking bright and performance wise we have nothing to worry about. I think pedestrians will have to watch out and rather than your petrol car not turning over in the morning we will have to worry about BSOD in our cars, but I'm sure these problems will be ironed out. Good vid :)
So true. My mom paid a thousand dollars for a VCR when they first came out. I paid the same for a PVR when they were introduced. Now they're free with your cable subscription. :) Electric cars like this - even better than this - will be fully within your price range, whatever that is.
The beauty of this car isn't about how it looks; it's about the genius behind the revolutionizing anatomy of motor vehicles. The "style not worth its money" debate should be put to shame next to its genius technology design.
Dr. Nikola Tesla was ahead of his time as well and received little to no credit for most of his discoveries; they'll manufacture a vehicle which brings reverence to, not him, but, his studies. Society should enshrine a statue of him. That's a refined, tasteful vehicle nonetheless.
Wow such a good review. In the pass i was a skeptic/ hater haha of electric cars but this really opened my eyes. After the issue of the slow home recharge rate and the means of electric production in the country becomes more efficient this type of car will replace the glorious combustion engine. So many advantages from the low center of gravity, the mountains of cargo space, to the streamline aerodynamics this review has changed my mind about electric vehicles.
This is such an amazing product of science and engineering. The only drawback is that its really just local commuting car and its real range of travel depends on those recharge stations.
I really liked this - thanks for taking your sweet time and showing a lot about the car and explaining what it's like day to day! I wish I needed a car and had the funds for this!
Very cool and well made review! It was a pleasure to watch it. Many points were covert! Thanks for doing that and have fun with your car! I would definitely buy one but in Germany it is to expensive and costs near double as in USA sadly....
10:46 He says a standard gas car will inch forward, but that's incorrect, gas powered cars with a torque converter automatic transmission will inch forward, but manual and dual clutch transmissions wouldn't
Hydrostatic transmissions slip too, if your car has one of those (I'm sure there's one out there). Most combines have them, I'm fairly certain. Continuously variable transmissions in tractors can creep forward, as well. Also, although not continuously variable, John Deere's PowerShift transmissions (up to, like, 18 gears) use some sort of hydraulic wizardry to creep forward AND backward if that floats your boat. Or backs your implement up. Whatever you want.
Good idea, but not even close to have enough power. On the other hand having more panels on the roof of your house or back yard where you have more area could do it.
As many others have mentioned already, the price for these kind of cars will drop when there is a proper market for it. Every new tech is expensive till it becomes more popular, just like flatscreen tvs, smartphones, computers etc. 50K is a remarkable achievement compared to other EVs
Don't worry about that. They didn't mention that you get a range or collection of different plugs that you can attach on to others. There's a plug that can connect to the Model S' charge port to a regular public charging station. There are even plugs for different sockets of 120 and 240v, whic the US has for some reason. In short term, with the Model S, you can be able to adapt to most plugs, especially charging stations.
I agree, I like this kind of review. The owner seemed extremely knowledgeable. I guess with a car like that, you are more likely to research it and know a lot about it if you are going to buy one.
I've been keeps a close eye on Model S even before the launch. I seriously want one but bought my current car only 1 year ago. Love what i am seeing so far, truly is a game changer as a whole package. But i guess i'll wait for 2nd Generation when the bugs get ironed out and I can justify getting a new car.
i want one. bad. but i live in the sticks in canada where 3 feet of snow is a slow day. i saw a volt just the other day though, the electric car is here to stay finally!
So I would imagine living in a cold winter state the range would be less because of batteries not working as well in sub zero weather. The other thing is how would you charge it if you lived in a apartment or wanted to take a road trip.
The Tesla S seems like it is getting to be a better solution for people that an Electric vehicle makes sense. The range is decent for most people. The lack of charging stations is still what I see as the biggest limit. If you live in a city (apt. living), you don't have the option of charging overnight (think, street parking cities or no reserved spots). Too bad there isn't just 1 standard plug type for charging electric cars. That would really help get more charging stations.
Through a software update, the Tesla Model S now has a creep option, voice control, and a sleep mode that reduces the car's functions when it is "off". Tesla can make the car smoother, update the car's OS, make it faster, solve problems, etc. through a software update. This is truly Car 2.0!
It isn't like there will only be 4 charging outlets. The idea is that you go to a store and use the chargers that the store provides. They might give free electricity as an incentive to shop at their store vs. one that either doesn't have chargers, or charges you money to charge.

I like the way he talks about keeping the car for, maybe 10 years, but knowing how the auto industry survives by people buying a new car every few years, I can't see the auto industry being too happy if people buy these in huge quantities and keep them a long time.
That's one of the reasons why the dealerships hate Tesla Motors: EVs, especially the Model S, require minimal maintenance, which is where they get a large part of their profits. By eliminating the middle man, Tesla has unintentionally flipped the bird to dealerships. Doesn't mean I don't still love TM and the Model S though. :D

"gas pedal" is obviously wrong, but he still uses it simply because it's so ingrained in our vocabulary ... "accelerator" is the obvious substitute, but I think we need a catchy, new term ... "watts pedal", maybe ???
What's regenerative breaking? And why not let momentum take the car when you want to let momentum take you towards, say, a red light that will turn green soon, or just down hill or any situation where you want to let go of the gas and coast but not slow down too much? (just curious; not familiar with any of this)
don't expect 18650 cells to last long. they sometimes last 50 cycles in electrical products and fail and lose capacity and the voltage suddenly drops to zero on them under load
Tesla really needs to talk and go into detail about replacement battery prices or some form of battery swapping. That really makes me want to hold back on the technology but at the same time I want one.
The Model S is awesome. The interviewer seemed spastic and kept repeating EXACTLY what the owner just said and saying what we're seeing like he just wants to hear himself talk.
Yes, individual drivers are insured. Some policies cover any car the policy holder is driving, others only cover the policy holder's personal vehicles.
@grahamhg im pretty sure tesla already made contact with small cars when they made the roadster! And being big and technical is working for them very well. In fact they are one of the most successful companys I have seen in years.
Here is something to remember about "electric" cars: a battery is not a source of energy. Rather, a battery is a storage vessel for energy that is produced at your local power plant. So, if your local power plant is a coal-fired power plant, then your Tesla Model S (or other electric car) is a coal-fired car. If you are going to use hydrocarbons to power your car anyway, gasoline engines are a much better deal.
- The same way every car gets A/C, except with the compressor being powered by the battery. - People said a similar thing about the cost of computers vs. typewriters/paper, but now compare computer usage and prices from 1980 to 2000.
I know, right? He talked about each feature on the touchscreen menu in sequence: left-to-right, and just sorta skipped the camera. Hard to believe that wasn't deliberate.
Tesla fan? Watch our video on driving the Tesla Model X with autopilot! ua-cam.com/video/UNAa5-uCowY/v-deo.html
Lol yes
17:56 "Yea, the unlatching mechanism unlatches pretty good"
By far the most advanced and impressive feature of the vehicle.
I chuckle every time he refers the acceleration pedal as the "gas pedal" when he's in an electric car lol.
My dad just bought the P90D ludicrous last week and he loves it, he said he doesn't want another car :)
that was the best tesla model s review i've seen so far
After watching this video a few times now, the question comes to mind.. why on earth are we still driving on oil... imagine how enviromentally safe these cars would be.

brianmgs2006 you and me both buddy, they are still pretty expensive, perhaps in the future...

And supposedly its only a few years away...
I checked into a Nissan Leave and the break-even point was 10 years for my driving. A Tesla should be around 30 years for me before I save anything.
Well currently it would be impossible for everyone to drive one tomorrow even if they were free to own. People driving cars each day consumes more energy than the national grid transports everyday. So the grid would have to transport over 100% more power each day which isn't possible without major modifications. This is the most thorough & honest review that I have ever seen of a Tesla Model S. It makes me want to buy one now even more. Decisions decisions!!!
This is hands down the most informative thing I have seen on this car. I want one SO bad.
CLEARLY explained the cell pack idea i was wondering about. even more impressed with this car now! hopefully this will be my first car
This is one of the best reviews done on Tesla Model S!
He really knows his car
wow, one of the best Tested videos in a while for sure
Thanks for sharing this Tesla experience. Great to see all the technology that is implemented in this car of the future. 6:44 most interesting part in this video. Seriously no joke.
That was a great review... all thanks to your great friend who lets you drive his new Tesla!

Brakes...braking!!
I have dyslexia! Leave me alone! At least I spelled it right!
Jim Gamble
If this were an essay for English class or something, OK. I still understood what he was trying to get at, though; isn't that the point of communicating?
I appreciate proper spelling and grammar as much as the next guy, it's just low-priority in a scenario like this is all.
Nothing like it anywhere on the planet for any price! What an amazing machine!

Really awesome of him to let you review his car. The Tesla is awesome.
Thanks so much for sharing your car with us Christian!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS CAR!!! it makes me happy and optimistic about the future of automobiles and our planet!

He allowed it because as stated in the introduction, he is a fan of tested and actually contacted them.
wow the idea of adding features your car via a firmware update is very appealing
Very well done interview, thanks!
That was a great review. Thanks for the inside look.

Junior offroader LT
I grew up on a farm
0:13 What the heck is Bill Murray doing there?
best tested episode ever !!
Instead of glass, wouldn't it be better to have photovoltaic panels embedded in the roof to charge your car while its parked in the sun?
Good idea, but not even close to have enough power.

i now know what gluttony hell feels like. 21, no money, want that car more than almost anything else in life. damn.

Love the "feel" of this test drive. An inexperienced EV driver cooperating with the "noob" :)
Great review, enjoyed it a lot, i think it will be my first electric when the revenue will permit it.
Most informed car owner ever, hes probably an engineer.
By sun energy. So ..... very clean.
These stations are reserved for TESLA drivers and .... FREE.
No cost at all.
What a great advantage !
i want one. bad. but i live in the sticks in canada where 3 feet of snow is a slow day. i saw a volt just the other day though, the electric car is here to stay finally!
So I would imagine living in a cold winter state the range would be less because of batteries not working as well in sub zero weather. The other thing is how would you charge it if you lived in a apartment or wanted to take a road trip.
lithium batteries are not much affected by weather
They work well to -30°C, actually many Teslas drive around Norway and Canada without any issues.
Michael from GTA?
Lol
The Tesla S seems like it is getting to be a better solution for people that an Electric vehicle makes sense. The range is decent for most people. My favourite part was when Norm stops time and they talk telepathically.
Majorly jealous. And the video covers a lot of stuff most of the articles and reviews didn't! So, go Tested!
thank you for an intelligent and informative video.
Glad you enjoyed it , but stuffed if I know where the "stupid " part is? Cheers.
Great interview - good questions - green with envy ! Can't wait to own a Tesla ! Super job ELON !!
Tesla gives new owners a pretty thorough, in-person, rundown of what's what.
Most beautiful sedan ever made :). One day I will own one.
Through a software update, the Tesla Model S now has a creep option, voice control, and a sleep mode that reduces the car's functions when it is "off". Tesla can make the car smoother, update the car's OS, make it faster, solve problems, etc. through a software update. This is truly Car 2.0!
Great review!... are there any downside after 6 months of use?
It isn't like there will only be 4 charging outlets. The idea is that you go to a store and use the chargers that the store provides. They might give free electricity as an incentive to shop at their store vs. one that either doesn't have chargers, or charges you money to charge.
laughed really hard at the chevy volt in the back
HEHE maybe I went too far. Of course that there are many other beautiful cars out there....but.... When you put together such an amazing piece of mechanical and technological piece of machinery you get the most amazing car out there...

ablosutely fantastic video, thaks for sharing!!
Ive been in at this, when Eli Moss gave a lecture at Oxford University last month :)
Genuine Tesla, ahead of its time.
MOST PERFORMANCE I'VE EVER HAD IN A CAR. This guy must have never driven a 6 cylinder
I'm a little uneasy about the quiet ride thing, I like hearing a car coming you know.
Tesla really needs to talk and go into detail about replacement battery prices or some form of battery swapping. That really makes me want to hold back on the technology but at the same time I want one.

Fantastic car. You get 2 trunks in this car :) Nice.
This was cool. I subscribed.
Yes, individual drivers are insured. Some policies cover any car the policy holder is driving, others only cover the policy holder's personal vehicles.
I see these cars everywhere lol, beautiful car indeed
Im pretty sure the door handle doesnt affect aerodynamcis at all. It just for 1. Looks cool, and 2. it might help with security, might help.
Every time Norm gets behind the wheel of a vehicle I get flashbacks to the last time Vader gave him the keys to the Super Star Destroyer
It depends on which state you live. In California the driver is insured. In Pennsylvania the car is insured.
dude was clenching up...about to see his 100k car ruined by a geek
Wouldn't you? I hate letting anyone drive my 5k € piece of shit car. I can't even imagine the horror of letting anyone drive my 80k car.
They have a show room in santa monica, ca. Car kicks butt
How big magnetic field this car produce? It's safe for peoples with pacemaker?
@grahamhg im pretty sure tesla already made contact with small cars when they made the roadster! And being big and technical is working for them very well. In fact they are one of the most successful companys I have seen in years.
