  • Series: Insight
Episode: “Locusts Have No King” (1965), prod. No. 157
Executive producer and host: Ellwood Kieser C.S.P.
    Writer: Gilbert Ralston
    Director: Ted Post
Cast: William Shatner, Geraldine Brooks, Kent Smith, Henry Beckman.
Synopsis: A businessman must decide if it is his civic and moral duty to stand against criminal political corruption in his municipality. Preserved by UCLA Film & Television Archive; episode presented courtesy of Paulist Productions.
The long-running religious anthology program, Insight (1960-1983), holds a unique place in the history of public service television programming. The revered series, which has obtained underground cult status for its outré storylines and late night airings in the 1970s, was broadcast nationally in major markets for over 20 years without commercial sponsorship. Created, produced and hosted by Fr. Ellwood Kieser (1929-2000), the series boasted a long, diverse list of Hollywood contributors, including the likes of William Peter Blatty, Michael Crichton, Ida Lupino and Flip Wilson-all drawn by the show’s reputation for consistently stretching the creative boundaries of television. Offbeat and experimental by design, the series won numerous Daytime Emmy Awards and received critical praise for addressing social issues (the Vietnam War, nuclear proliferation, and suicide, to name a few), often with black humor or stark realism, and almost always with a humanist theme.--Mark Quigley, the John H. Mitchell Television Archivist.

Shatter is amazing in this episode. This is really fine example of his skill.

For those who say Shatner is a ham actor haven't seen this. He's a fine actor with a very dynamic range.

To be honest, William Shatner has on occasion " hammed it up...a bit ", but I think that's part of his charm as an actor and as a human being. Look at the acting of Leonard Nimoy over nearly the same period of time (mid 50s to...?), he seems to have always kept himself " in check ", for good or bad. I don't believe there was ever an instance of Nimoy obviously appearing to enjoy his role in anything...again, for good or bad effect.

Been dipping into lots of his performances here on UA-cam, for which many thanks.😊.
What comes over is a natural , believable, consistent, reliable style and solid ability....
Delighted to listen to a nice interview recently, during the pandemic, where he is approaching 90 :
    April, 2021.😊
He gives generously on thoughts about life.

It blows the mind that a program of this caliber was actually aired on television - but that was 1965. I wonder how it would be received today, in this world of unlimited and unbridled permissiveness? William Shatner had a wonderful acting career before he came to command a starship!

All you have to do is put his name in the search bar in UA-cam. He was all over the place. All those casting directors couldn't be wrong! He was much in demand. That's why his name came up for Star Trek. They sought him. He didn't seek them. He was in NY when they called.

A couple fine Canadian actors there. Henry Beckman and Shatner. The Shat was so busy before Trek. A successful working actor with leading man potential. Then Trek typecast him and made him unmarketable for the next 10 years. He ended up living in a van down by the river while taking the odd guest star and movie roles (think Hawaii Five-0, Kingdom of the Spiders and Pray for the Wildcats). The Trek movies save him, but for some reason he was no longer typcast and went on to other major roles...

Priests have a bad reputation nowadays thanks to the acts of a few rotten apples. Also, I think this country is not as religious as it was during the years this series aired. I don't think it would be received favorably if it were aired in 2022. Some changes would have to be made.

William Shatner was no catholic certainly, having come from an Orthodox Jewish community in Canada. And it seems a bit strange having a priest doing the intro. But it's a broad morality play and "Under God" had been added to the pledge of allegiance just a decade before. Bottom line is that Shatner has always had an insatiable work ethic. Even now in his 90s. Pity that Geraldine Brooks' life was cut short. She's marvelous in this too and oh that voice! 🥰 There's no accounting for that hair though. 😉

While I have also noticed that aura of leadership in many of his roles, there were also several (admittedly early in his career) where that wasn't the case. His appearances on The Twilight Zone spring to mind. In any case, it may be as much about the roles he took as it COULD be a natural trait of Shatner's acting style.

The morality speech about "eternity" by the priest is one of the most absurd things I have heard in a while. William Shatner was terrific in this drama. Sorry "Father" Kieser, but coming from a catholic priest, your talk about moral principles and integrity reeks of hypocrisy. Humans do not need a god to have principles or integrity.
