I totally agree with the idea of spending more time on character development. One of the things that made the first *Alien* movie so great was the uncertainty about who to follow. All the characters were introduced at the same time, which allowed for some solid development.
Brett and Parker came off as jerks, funny, and at times relatable blue-collar guys, which made them feel real instead of just being throwaway characters. They could have done something similar with Bjorn and Tyler by giving us more insight into who they are right from the start.
Also, the surprise factor in who survives really added to the tension in the original film. When you watched Alien, it wasn’t obvious that Ripley would be the last one standing-most people probably thought it would be Captain Dallas. That kind of unpredictability is what kept everyone on the edge of their seats, and it would have been cool to see that in the newer story too!

I honestly don't think they tried to make Rain a replacement for Ripley, but she definitely adapts to her surroundings well under extreme pressure. There was a timidness to her character that remained throughout, but when her back was against the wall, she didn't freeze up. Although there wasn't a lot of major depth to all of the characters, it could probably be chalked up to their youth. These were young adults who haven't lived long, but they are desperate and don't want to live a life of servitude under Weyland-Yutani. The prime of their young lives is just beginning but here they are on a dark, dingy, terraformed planet with no sun, no natural resources, and basically no future.

I was 8 when Alien came out and it, which along with The Amityville Horror and Phantasm were my first exposures to horror films. I'd see commercials that scared me but the imagery was so profound and stunning that it was all so interesting as well. Alien in particular merged my Star Wars and Star Trek-oriented brain with horror concepts and that hooked me. The whole story of Alien and the concepts around the gestation of it, how unnatural and ruthless and unstoppable it was, how the ship and the android and the company all played a role in the plot that included not only the chestburster scene but one of the most shocking scenes in the film (that has since become a familiar trope) where the betrayal of Ash and Weyland-Yutani are discovered. That sort of doomed revelation was stunning upon first watch. Betrayals prior to that had been so telegraphed/foreshadowed - in westerns and James Bond but the Ash revelation was such a kick in the gut when combined with the ferociousness of the xenomorph.
I got to take my father to the premiere of Aliens. He had no idea what it was going to be. It blew his mind completely, and it was the first time I saw him frightened but excited at the same time. So that's a special memory for me.

I feel like there was another theme they were hammering home that you didn't mention...the theme of the human heart and trying to save one person while endangering the many. The whole idea of androids making the logical decision and humans operating from the heart. Also a theme in the other movies at timea

I took a liking to the franchise as a kid because of the inevitably of the aliens. And the thought of a face hugger basically impregnating anyone that it can get a hold of has always fascinated me.
Anyway, I loved this one. The cinematography was excellent from start to finish, the practical effects, all the underlying themes, tying in elements from several of the other movies, I could go on and on. Loved your review 👽

I really enjoyed your thoughts/analysis of the film! I was hoping you'd do a video on this. :)
In preparation of seeing Romulus I was able to rewatch almost ALL of the previous Alien films as they're almost all currently streaming. I also rewatched the documentary "Memory: the Origins of Alien" which actually ended up being my favorite! Worth mentioning; Alien isn't a franchise I grew up loving or watching frequently so when I just recently rewatched all of them most were just my 2nd viewing as I only own Alien and the documentary on blu-ray.
That being said; I was actually really excited to see this as I was curious what Fede Alvarez was going to do with this IP. I enjoyed it, but I don't see myself watching it again once it hits the streaming services. Could be my fault for binging the series prior to watching it, but these movies kind of all blend together. I saw this on Friday and I'm not sure if I could tell you any of the characters' names from most of these films! Also, I did NOT like that Ian Holm's likeness was used...a lot! Nor did I like that the android used Ripley's line from Aliens. I hadn't see Aliens since I was young but I LOVED how Sig Weaver delivers that line when I just rewatched it. I thought that to be an odd use of fan service as Ripley's character made sense to say that at that moment in Aliens where as how would or why would the android character be motivated to say that??? Saw it in a packed theater and only a couple people clapped when he said it.
There was an older couple sitting a seat over from me who were appeared to be terrified while watching the film which made me chuckle a bit as I wished I got frightened like that while watching a horror movie. :)

Thank you! We also had a few people clapping at the famous Aliens line at our screening! 😄 I'm the same as I don't see myself revisiting this one anytime soon. Good to know the other films are on streaming. The documentary sounds fascinating!

I loved it. I liked that it leaned more into the survival horror aspect rather than the action-y side of the franchise.
I also saw Strange Darling the day before when they had an early screening. You gotta see that one. It's really wicked and messed up (in a good way.)

    How have you been?
Sorry about the popcorn bucket struggle. I got that container bucket & Alien cup. Idk why, but my local theater will not sell them early. Until premiere release day. Which is a good idea. Plus going earlier helps too. But not all theaters are the same👽🍿

Awesome review and it would of been cool to have spent more time on the Weyland Yutani planet and explore some of these characters struggles more before going to space but I had fun with the film overall not perfect though.

The 4th alien film has a human/xeno hyrbid of the design is sooo sloppy looking. This guy in romulus looked waaaay cooler than that.

I thought it was fair. I could watch it again for the action. I'd give it a 10/10 the set design and effects a 10/10 except for the CGI character from the previous film. That bothered me and drops it down to a seven. I liked the actor playing Andy and think he did a good job changing between the two personalities, but the base Andy was a little too much of a rube and it took me out. The main character was good. The annoying character was too annoying and the other characters were just there too make obvious mistakes and create a body count. I think it went out of it's way to pay tribute to the original films which got in the way of this being a very good movie. I'd give it a 👽👽👽👽👽👽

@@KatsHorrorCorner Repeated callbacks did not work and detracts from the story being told. Bad deep fake appearance by Rook was what killed it for me. Dialogue was pretty dull a lot of the time. LIKES: The look of the film, the sound design, the practical effects were decent but nowhere near as compelling as Alien and Aliens. The character of Andy and his performance. The ringed planet and the interaction with the storyline was interesting.
