.38 Special was my dad’s favorite band, and this was his favorite song. He passed away from a massive heart attack at the age of 64 on Dec 6, 2013 after going for a walk at a local park. This was the last song that he listened to during his walk, and it was paused in his iPod. Losing him has been very difficult for me, and this time of year gets especially hard knowing the anniversary is coming up. I found your channel today, and knew I had to watch this one. Thank you for your reaction. It always makes me feel good when I know someone is listening to his favorites. He would tell you to turn it all the way up! I bought him a T-shirt for his birthday earlier that year that said “If it’s too loud, you’re too old!” My favorite .38 Special song is “Caught Up In You”. You should check that one out!
This has to be the quintessential pop-rock song of the early 80’s. A little too formulaic but the excellent guitar soloing throughout elevates it beyond the repetitive formula. The guitar work is very upfront but it doesn’t take away from the strong melody. Yes, it could have used another verse or a different bridge rather than the last couple of choruses. A nice simple but effective message.
Really like your analogy about how when you grip a handful of sand too tightly its falls away quicker. I think that captures the essence of the song. Hold on loosely.
Fun fact that I bet you weren’t aware of. But the lead singer for 38special, is Donnie Van Zant, the brother of Ronnie Van Zant, the original lead singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd. Try “Wild Eyed Southern Boys”.
Thanks for the unique perspective. I think the lyric and meaning are universal because somehow we can't avoid holding on too tightly and loosing control. Its easier to know it than to do it.
I suggest something totally different. A sound with influences of indigenous music sung in Akwente Xerente (Indigenous language) - Arandu Arakuaa - Huku Hêmba - @
So happy you liked the song, it is apparent by the smiles, head bobbing, and sing along sessions. Love the lyrics to this song even if they are difficult to live by at times. My ex-wife used to tell people out relationship didn't work unless we were around each other 24/7 and I felt suffocated. 17 years I didn't leave her for another woman I left her so I could breath. Hold on loosely kept my parents together for 59 years...
