The mono rig set up I’m using in this video is a 24 foot section of 20 pound Maxima I taper that down with a two foot section of a 12 lb gold stren that connects with a 14 inch 2x sighter (Rio bi-color) to a tippet ring. I then use anywhere from 3x-6x fluoro tippet for the flies. Troutbitten.com would refer to this as their standard monorig formula. I keep my floating flyline on my reel. I simply use a clinch knot to attach my monorig to the loop end of the fly line. You can vary the weight of the butt section of the monorig if you want to go lighter. I like the 20 lb butt section this time of year because it’s heavy enough to throw dries and dry dropper.

@@troutstrike Thank you for the details. I am newer to fly fishing and will try this formula. What is the purpose of tapering down to 12 lb. gold stren? Can I use 12 lb. Maxima instead? Also, do you change from 20 lb. butt end to perhaps 15 lb. Maxima then taper to 12 or 10 lb. before the sighter and tippet ring when water flow and level is lower in the summer?

Tapering is really optional. It think it helps casting and it’s easier to tie a blood knot to connect the sighter. I like amnesia because it doesn’t coil up. But maxima will work fine too. You can make the butt section as thin as you like. Some people fish a straight 5 or 6x mono rig. I would suggest starting heavier though until you get used to the casting. You can then start to experiment from there.
