I really like it when all the recipes are connected with specific cultures or regions. The new Witcher cookbook is the same way (but with slavic food) and honestly I really want to try it out. It looks really clean!
It's wonderful that they were so thoughtful when creating this cookbook. Mixing regular flour with cassava flour is something that a lot of people resort to doing since it's VERY hard to work with.
African cooking is criminally slept on. We all know the jokes, you haven't had much Ethiopian cooking and neither have they, but after learning of Shakshuka I wanted to know more what people can do when they have very different spices or ingredients and giving it a modern lens through Wakanda's high tech secret civilization sounds amazing. Even Caribbean is kind of underrated for how unique it is and having access to many cultural inputs and sourcing ingredients. Glad to hear the three recipes came out and I might have to check it out, not an obsessive Marvel fan but ya African cooking through a modern perspective sounds amazing either as something to mix things up or just get inspiration for other dishes.
Not to sound cold or nationalist (or anything else for that matter), but it feels to me that just about everything African, other than the wildlife, is slept on.Back in middle school we were taught that Africa was this strange place full of natural resources, exotic animals, and a whole bunch of poor government induced poverty and child labor. Seriously.
@@fredfry5100I KNOW! It’s really sad. Frickin ENORMOUS continent and most Americans (even me!) know so little about it. I randomly got mad about that and decided to learn all the names of the countries in Africa and where they are, just to start, and wow it was humbling… Millions of people live in countries whose names I had barely even heard of 😢
Basbousa is my favorite desert its usually made with semolina flour and that tends to make it end up darker but the ones you made look incredible, ill have to give it a try.
Miso found a new archnemesis: Casava flour 😂 This cookbook looks great, would be a great gift for both comic fans and for people who enjoy African cuisine.
Damn, those recipes look amazing! I am fascinated by the Oxtail, a part of the bovine i never saw in my local grocery-stores. I always just heard its one of the more tender cuts. Another book for the wishlist, wakanda forever!
Very tender! It was surprisingly hard to find though as my local grocery store didn't have it. I had to get it from an Asian grocery store a bit farther away
I looked around a little and it seems you might have had cassava starch (and there might be some mislabeling or using terms interchangeably involved) When you mix certain starches and water you get ooblek a non newtonian fluid. Several descriptions of cassava flour i found said it should be less fine and maybe yellowish?
I have to say, i wasnt sold on just a wakanda-cookbook, because i dont care much about the character, but damn this is perhaps the best looking dishes you did so far! If it tastes just half as good i really wanna purchase this one.
i really like how you are being honest with your mistakes, i would have never guessed cassava flour behaved like that and thanks to you i know to be better prepared for it when i get this cook book 😄
These all look incredible! I can’t wait to grab this cookbook and try these recipes myself. I’m a bit concerned it might be a challenge to find all the ingredients, but it’s gonna be a fun adventure searching for them regardless!
@@MisoHungrie this might be a translation issue. The bag in the video said 木薯粉which does usually mean starch. Chinese cooking doesn't normally use actual cassava flour, only starch so if it's got Chinese characters on the bag it's probably starch. You could try those health food cassava flour which seems like more of a flour alternative.
Perhaps one of the best episodes yet. I thoroughly enjoyed both your narration and the sneak peak into the book's recipees. Really one of the best books you have reviewed so far! Would love it of maybe you revisited this one and some of the best other cookbooks sometime!

If you could represent more often some vegetarian recipes (not just the deserts) I would be very happy. But still enjoying your videos even though I can't use most of the showed recipes.
Eu acho que o livro podia ter tido uma curadoria um pouco mais acurada, mas foi legal de ver um pouco de uma cozinha mais africana sendo explorada e foi MUITO divertido ver o gringo descobrindo a farinha de mandioca auhsuahsu
Ox tail soup is the best and I am upset that it is so hard to find where I live, and that it is not as normal or known. My mother made it for me the first time, and the broth is completely different with the tail compared to anything else. I do like the image of T'Challa having a royal dinner, somehow the idea of the everyday life of such a grand role in such a different land and culture is very interesting; food is something that everyone has in common, and it is always fun to see something we all share be made and eaten differently both across cultures but also ranks. I had hoped, if they would rather have comic panels rather than food pictures, that there would be more pictures of the characters eating, but then I realized that superhero comics taking space to just sit and eat might not be as common as I would like to imagine. Perhaps I will check some recommended comic books of Black Panther and Wakanda. About the pictures, it also makes me wonder the reasons for some books having less pictures than others. I know Victoria Rosenthal does her own pictures, and she mentioned once in a podcast that food photography was, at the time, not an independant field yet. I assume the recipe authors have to make all the food they list, so why not take pictures? Is it an extra payment to it that the book company does not want to give? Would the author have to purchase their own equipment and that might not be reasonable? Or is it just individual preference? It makes me curious.
You should pat yourself on the back for the dumplings honestly, that was impressive I'm sure there's a scientific explanation for it but it ain't coming for me lol. Love the videos
This is not the basbusa I grew up with but it’s very similar down to the pistachio it’s just that mine was more bread like and I mean it was kinda fluffy but crumbly but the sugar held it together either way I like it
Your oil wasn't hot enough for those wings thats why they didn't turn out crispy enough for you. Pro tip if you take a hair drier to your chicken meat after patting it dry you will get giga crispy chicken.
I don’t like Black Panther at all, but these look good! I have no idea how authentic these dishes are, since I know very little about African cooking, which… shame on me!
When you accidentally make non-newtonian fluid instead of dumplings.
Yeah I don't understand how those were intended to work lol. Plop them in really fast?
came here to say the same thing haha
Must be similar to to potato starch or something because that was pure oobleck or how ever you spell it
It's actually pretty cool to have actual African dishes. Only problem is I've got a too many cookbook problem.
I agree!
I like to request that my local library purchases it or do an interlibrary loan, then copy the recipes I didn't have time to try while I loaned it.

It looks like the casava dumplings almost should have been similar to a Korean teokkboki. Maybe look into that recipe for an idea?
You're right, it reminded me of teokkboki a lot in terms of its consistency
As a South African, it’s so cool to see food that reminds me of the ones I commonly see around me.

Actually tried the wings myself! Unfortunately I didn't make the sauce good enough and it was more jelly than anything...
Ahh yeah mine gelatinized when it sat too long in the fridge. Adding a bit of water or stock when reheating put it right back to sauce form though 👍
