I was an animation major at FIT in NYC and my history of animation teacher was none other than John Culhane, the person Mr. Snoops was based on. He was a big animation buff that the animators at Disney were so amused by they made Mr Snoops a caricature of him. An incredibly friendly, enthusiastic person. So anyway, the way I heard it, there are several reasons why they made a sequel to The Rescuers instead of any other of their major films: First, it had the hook for it. The basic premise was extremely sequel compatible. In fact Disney considered making several sequels to The Rescuers. They thought it might be nice to turn it into something like James Bond where the mice would have many adventures together. However, Eva Gabor died (and to be fair, she was 76, so poor planning on their part), so they decided to shelve the series out of respect for the actress. Second, Disney was in a slump before The Little Mermaid and The Rescuers was actually one of their more successful recent films. It was in production well before The Little Mermaid so they didn't yet have their winning formula that would dominate their 90s films. They made something that seemed safe because the first one worked. Third, it was the first Disney animated film entirely using digital paint (except, as I recall, a scene or two in The Little Mermaid) and they wanted a lesser known franchise to be a guinea pig of sorts. Personally, I think The Rescuers and its sequel are among my favorite of all Disney films.
It's my favorite movie too. This movie doesn't deserve to forgotten and underrated. This movie deserves more love and respect. This movie fits perfectly in the disney's rennaisance era, even there's no musical and fairy tale story.
A shame though that we never got the third movie, due to the deaths of John Candy and Eva Garbor the production of the third movie was cancelled shortly after.
At last! This was complete animation I was waiting for and is the last time we’d see this character (aside from her appearances from ‘House of Mouse’). Also I’d love to see Jake the Roo mouse in some shape or form.

That is fascinating! Thanks for sharing!
The Rescuers Down Under was Eva Gabor's final film role. She passed away in 1995, five years after the film came out. Rest in peace Eva.
