People don't realize just how forward the show was bc they just thought of it as old ladies eating cheesecakes. This show has always been a beacon for LGBTQ+ to feel understood and safe. They also showed racial divides, political issues, health issues, antisemitic attitudes. The list is endless. They achieved something at a time when it was all still taboo. I'll always love the Girls. My cars are named after them and I have many awesome GG art.
Part of Sophias' storyline was that she had previously had a stroke, which damaged part of her brain, causing her to have no filter. Although, when they did flashbacks to younger Sophia, she was juat as sarcastic.
I am 46 and still indulge in reruns nightly. I remember when the pilot for GG launched. It is still one 9f the funniest sitcoms created. I will be watching it when l am 90... The Golden Palace was a spin off of GG. It was just as funny but only had 1 or 2 seasons in the early 90s. This show is a comedic gem!!!
I'm 25 and I LOVE the Golden Girls, maybe because my dads raised me on it due to how much they had loved it (it was a show that was openly accepting of gay people and had those hard conversations when others wouldn't) ❤❤ this show transcends age, race, religion and more ❤❤
My elderly mother, 89, moved in with me, my husband and 11 year old daughter in 2007. They had the upstairs to themselves. Every night, my husband and I would hear laughing hysterically. The first time we ran upstairs and mom was in her chair, coming out her granddaughters hair and watching the Golden Girls. We left them alone after that. I treasure and I know my daughter treasures the time she sat on Mema's stool, combing her hair. Now my daughter is 2 months pregnant and wants her Mema's stool for her child. Can't wait to use it.
I discovered this show at 16 (I'm 27 now) and LOVED it. My friends teased me for it because "it's about old women -- how can an old show about old women be good?" I'm like, "They're hilarious! Who cares if they're older? I love it." For me, this is an evergreen type of show. No matter how much time passes, I always rewatch it when I'm in need of a laugh. Dorothy and Sophia were my favorites. Their comebacks and remarks are SAVAGE.
80s baby here, and this is just a TASTE of the comedy this show brings. And it's still airing today! Grew up watching this show and it's a favorite of mine all these years later. You really don't get gems like these anymore and it's so sad. R.I.P. to this wonderful cast
I have been watching this show since I was 20 - I’m now 55 and I watch it every night to fall asleep. Not only is it funny as hell , and still holds up today but it’s soothing - recommend it for anyone. Top 5 comedies of all time
it was a sitcom but it has touched so many serious topics. The legendary line of Blanche, ´AIDS is not the bad persons disease, it is not god punishing for their sins´, is one of the best examples.
I'm 52 and watched every single episode back in the day and still watch it! EVERYBODY loved The Golden Girls...punks, Goths (real ones back then), pro basketball players, millionaires, poor folks, black, white, etc. Such a huge show! 😂😂 You should see some Designing Women as well!
Bea Arthur who played Dorothy on Golden Girls was 5'9 1/2 inches tall. She served as a truck driver in the United States Marine Corps Women's Reserve during WW2.
I was 14 when “The Golden Girls” began in September of 1985. It was on Saturday nights on NBC, and it was a HUGE hit show from the first episode. It was a totally unique show, nothing like it had ever been on tv before. Usually old ladies were old fashioned or just boring or grandmother types. These older women didn’t act (or talk) like the older women you’d see on tv: they had sex, they were raunchy, they insulted each other brutally, they weren’t sitting in rocking chairs and knitting. When the show went off the air in 1992, the reruns were always on tv. The only problem was all the tv stations edited or censored the episodes, so you missed a lot it. Once all 7 seasons came out on DVD all the episodes were restored to the way they originally aired. I have the DVD box set and it’s great to just pop in a disc when you need a good laugh.
I was born in 92. My grandmother loved this show. I went to her house everyday after school and watched them with her. I still watch it through at least twice a year. It's my feel good show when life is too much. I cant talk to my grandmother anymore so when I miss her I just turn on her favorite episodes and pretend shes laughing with me. Incredible show, better than most shows nowadays
Best show on telly in the 'eighties! And yes, Dorothy is savage - but she learned everything she knows from her mother, Sophia (little cranky lady with the bubble-perm!)
Yes! Spread the word of GG. I've been an unapologetic fan since 7th grade. As a late 40's straight male nobody takes me serious when I try to tell them this is one of the funniest shows ever made.
Another savage is Dixie Carter's Julia on Designing Women. She would launch into such biting tirades that the other ladies nicknamed her The Terminator.
Bea Arthur (Dorothy) was 5'10, & a former Marine during WWII, Betty White (Rose) & Rue McClanahan (Blanche) were both 5'4", & Estelle Getty (Sophia) was 4' 10" . . . .
IInexplicable to me, but when my son was a teenager, a big hockey-banging guy, he loved this show. He's in his 40s now and probably still loves itt to this day. Sofia was his favorite.
I still watch this. I've been watching it since I was like 5. I'm 41 now. STILL love this show, especially Dorothy. She reminds me of my dad's side of the family and my siblings and dad before he passed away.. Sarcastic Italian from the city. Gotta love it. 😊
Hard to believe they're all gone now. I didn't watch them much. When they got syndicated in reruns that's when I caught up to them. They were so freaking hilarious even just listening to this bunch of shorts Unforgettable. Thank you for this
It’s such an easy show to watch. It’s my go-to tv show for when I want to watch something I like but don’t want to be bothered by investing into new characters and plots 😂😂
I love this show. Brings back great memories watching it with my grandmother. 🥲😊😅 Dorothy was my favorite....her sarcasm is legendary. Fun fact, Bea Arthur was a Marine and drove a truck
Use to be my little secret loving the Golden Girls when it was shown on Channel 4 on a Friday here in the UK. Looking back now I forgot how savage Dorothy was and also how funny the show was and still is. Those ladies are now back together in heaven RIP.
I LOVE that you watch the Golden Girls! They are the BEST! When I have an awful day or need some cheering up I watch this show and feel so much better. lol...
Love the Golden Girls, I used to watch it here in Ireland with my Nan when I was young, most of the jokes went over my head but I just loved hearing my Nan laugh hysterically at it! Great reaction xx
I grew up watching this with my mother. This show is so iconic, they even reference it on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic with the "Golden Horseshoe Gals"
I recently turned 70 and Have been watching The Golden Girls since the show started in 2985 it is an AwesomecShow with quite a few emonital episodes but they are also Totally Hilarious Enjoy
I loved the Golden Girls! It came on during late high school through early undergrad on Saturdays on NBC. I used to call it the "Saturday Spread": Facts of Life at 8:00, Amen at 8:30, Golden Girls at 9:00, and Empty Nest at 9:30. Dorothy is a savage because Bea Arthur is. She was a savage with her 1970s tv show "Maude". It was another of Norman Lear's groundbreaking sitcoms from the 70s. After you finish the Golden Girls, you should move to Maude. Rue MacClanahan was a recurring character on there. They have a history of working together. So basically, what you're watching is a Williams' sisters level tennis match of verbal sparring, going back and forth.
Bea Arthur (who plays "Dorothy") is ALSO like this in her series BEFORE "The Golden Girls" called "MAUDE" which was a spinoff from "ALL IN THE FAMILY." "MAUDE" is another hilarious sit com. She's married in this one and has a grown daughter.
I was in my late teens when this show came out I loved it, now I’m 57 and I have been watching reruns, the things they said back then, you couldn’t do today..just a wonderful show all around ❤
HEY EVERYONE CAN YALL PLEASE CHECK OUT MY WIFE REACTION TO THIS VIDEO AND LEAVE A COMMENT UNDER HER VIDEO ua-cam.com/video/JvhddwtQDKA/v-deo.html
@darealadogg Bea Arthur is 5 foot 10 inches.......
It doesn't matter what year it is, The Golden Girls will always be one of the best TV shows of all time.
I totally agree.
I so love these woman
I bought the entire series on DVD and binge watch at least once a year.
Yes, it will!!!
This show tackled so many deep topics from AIDS, being LGBT, tackling grief - that's barely scratching the surface.
It's still an amazing show.
Rose was a opioid addict!
People don't realize just how forward the show was bc they just thought of it as old ladies eating cheesecakes. This show has always been a beacon for LGBTQ+ to feel understood and safe. In the context of the characters, Dorothy is a savage, but she gets it from her more savage mother Sophia. She really has no filter. 🤣
Picture it, Sicily
@@yc0995 1924 etc…
Part of Sophias' storyline was that she had previously had a stroke, which damaged part of her brain, causing her to have no filter.

Black male here 80s baby at that . Love this show. Perfect sit com imo. All actresses perfectly played their role.
❣️👍🏼💋
It’s a show for everyone
I still love when she said, "Shady Pines, Ma !" Every time she would make a reference to Shady Pines, I would laugh.
I use that one on my mother now
A dear friend of mine would always joke with her mom about Shady Pines. Her mom loved the joke, too.
Or the ever so popular “Not now Ma!!!!!”
My daughter got me a frig magnet with Dorothy and that saying 😂😂
I used to say it to my mom all the time.
I am 46 and still indulge in reruns nightly. I remember when the pilot for GG launched. It is still one 9f the funniest sitcoms created. I will be watching it when l am 90... With the best song ever. I am the same age as urself and like u I still watch it.
I loved that show and Cheech Marin was on that show wasn’t he?
I'm 25 and I LOVE the Golden Girls, maybe because my dads raised me on it due to how much they had loved it (it was a show that was openly accepting of gay people and had those hard conversations when others wouldn't) ❤❤ this show transcends age, race, religion and more ❤❤
And, don't forget about the show, Empty Nest, who was the GG's neighbor with the dog Drefyus! 😂
I'm 44 and doing the same thing😅

The actress playing Dorothy, the legendary Beatrice Arthur is 5'10. She looks tall next to her co-stars because they were really short.
I was wondering if she may have had some heels on at times making her appear taller yet.
@@slvrangel22 no she’d wore flats…the other women were very short.
She was also in the US Military
5'10" is still well above average (average is 5'5") for women.
I discovered this show at 16 (I'm 27 now) and LOVED it. My friends teased me for it because "it's about old women -- how can an old show about old women be good?" I'm like, "They're hilarious! Dorothy was 5"10. And she served in the U.S.Marines.
She looks taller on the show because the other girls were all under 5’4.
In the programme or real life?
@@georgemaxwell4984 In real life. There are photos of her from that time online. Just Google Image search “Bea Arthur Marines.”
In real life Bea was a US marine
oh, i read that she was only 5'-9".
Dorothy and Sophia used to use Shady Pines against each other. Sophia used it as a guilt trip while Dorothy used it as a threat.

Bea Arthur (Dorothy) was a staff sergeant in the USMCWR during WWII.
I can see her punching nazis in the face, all day long, just like captain america
Dorothy ( Bea Arthur) was just under 5' 10" tall. Rose (Betty White) was 5'4"" , Blanche (Rue McClanahan) 5'3" and Sophia (Estelle Getty) 4'10".
25 years old Black asf, and watches nothing but this on rerun. My favorite on Hulu and all. ‘Three on a couch’ one of my favorites!
This and Designing Women! 😂
it was a sitcom but it has touched so many serious topics. The legendary line of Blanche, ´AIDS is not the bad persons disease, it is not god punishing for their sins´, is one of the best examples.
Dorothy being diagnosed with Fibromyalgia was another good one
Best sitcom ever!!!!!! U have to do Sofia’s most savage moments now, she is hilarious!!!
Oh Sofia is a legend! I don't remember watching a lot of Golden Girls, but I remember Sofia was my favorite.
@@truefanforum3273 mine too
After all this decades it is still the most funny sitcom there ever was imo. Smart writing and excellent acting.
The writing and delivery was perfect in this show. Thanks for sharing.
I miss good writing.
Dorothy was straight Savage! And the kicker is this, she got it from her momma.... Ya heard! Sophia is a straight up beast 😂😂😂
Sophia is my favorite! 🔥
"CONDOMS CONDOMS CONDOMS!" kills me every time.
One of the funniest. 😂😂
They cut off before “calm down lady, you just got out of prison?”

Yes! Designing Women! Please! 😂
The older I get the more like Dorothy I become. My daughter, who loves this show, is already becoming Dorothy.
Bea Arthur who played Dorothy on Golden Girls was 5'9 1/2 inches tall. She served as a truck driver in the United States Marine Corps Women's Reserve during WW2.
You mentioned Dorothy is tall.
Bea Arthur, the actress who played her, was a truck driver in the Marine Corps before she went into acting.
somehow this makes soooo much sense
Every weekend. I'm 46, so super nostalgic.
Dorothy is my spirit animal. Been watching and rewatching this show my entire life. Great stuff!!
I watch Golden Girls daily. I actually turn it on before I go to bed and it plays while I sleep.

According to Google, Bea Arthur was 5’10”. I love these Golden Girls reactions!!
I knew 6.4" was to high lol.
I believe, Bea Arthur confirmed that her height was 5 foot 9-and-a-half inches.
And she was a Marine during WW2 as well!
I'm 3 inches apart from Bea's height (5'7). I can really relate to her walking in bare feet on the set bc she hated wearing shoes as well.
I LOVE this, especially Dorothy's character! Thank you for bringing back the Golden Girls 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This show was iconic lol If you ever get bored...start watching the episodes haha ""Mama's Family" was good too.
Eunice is a trip
Best show on telly in the 'eighties! And yes, Dorothy is savage - but she learned everything she knows from her mother, Sophia (little cranky lady with the bubble-perm!)
