  • The new ambient sounds for birds, owls and insects react to players in this update, allowing other players to know or not if you are nearby. For this reason, I break down how bird sounds work to help you understand how to avoid detection from other players, and know when other survivors are near you in DayZ.

      My burning question after so many excellent videos detailing the edge cases of game functionality, why hasn't Bohemia offered WOBO a job? As a developer your level of detail would not only anger me (temporarily) but, would absolutely be welcome on my team.

    Bird sounds should be audible to other players within a certain radius, this would make tracking players within forests a thing. A player couldn't just run off into a Livonia forest and be gone, they could be hunted. Animals should also trigger bird sounds so they can be tracked and hunted.

      yeah making the bird bubbles global would be nice, but would switch it from client to server side and probably come with more implications to iron out. that's a lot of sound-distance processing you are potentially adding to strain on the server. Also an proximity triggered event spawn of a real bird, one of a territorial nature like an owl, raven, or crow that typically will bark at who they see as intruders in their IRL environments. So if they keep the bird bubble's client side there is the knowledge of some birds that are spooked when a player is around and the also the contrary, knowledge of different birds that will alarm the forest when the other birds are "hiding" which would be the best of both worlds for realistic immersion IMO

    I actually noticed the silence of the birds a long time ago. Sometimes you would notice it immediately before you, or somebody in your squad would get hit. You would notice just a really sudden cut out to the bird sounds and then you think "oh shit" just to be smacked by a .308 a fraction of a second later. lol

    Finally, bird noises, the feature we've all been asking for. I'm so glad this recieved priority over desync and render issues (which have been reintroduced with this update).

    I've said it before... It's a good idea to add real birds. Ducks and geese swimming in ponds that get spooked and fly away if someone gets near. Beavers that knock down trees. Woodpeckers. Birds in trees that fly away when spooked. Rats, raccoons, skunks, and crows in larger towns and cities. Mice inside houses. Crows near dead bodies that caw when a living player gets close. And have the crow sound travel farther than a rooster to in turn alert other players of your presence. Pigeons on roofs of highrise apartments and industrial buildings that get spooked when a player reaches that roof. Seagulls on the coast. Maybe an occasional dead fish on the beach. Dig for oysters on beach. Squirrels that can climb any surface and ground hogs in fields and in the woods. I want more hunting opportunities. Grouse, pheasant, turkey. Plus hunting different types of animals should open new crafting recipes. Not just for food. I want to put a feather in my cowboy hat. Or to make arrows for the bow they will never add. I want to craft a hat from a fox or a raccoon. Make new clothing items or to decorate existing clothes. DayZ has heroes and bandits. This would create a new type of player. The primitive survivalist. Lives off the land. Fully geared from what nature gives him. Or her. Like Rambo first blood

      Sadly I feel like most of the community only sees this as a pvp survival game and not the survival game it was intended as. Think about the masks we just got, purge style faction masks /: I’m not knocking pvp but they cater to it the most and it’s not even great as an fps game

      @@adeadfish5006 It does have a extensive modding community, which has been improving the pvp experience considerably by adding better basing building, vehicles, missions and pve creatures.

    They should change the silencing system so birds go silent when the sound wave hits not as the weapon fires. Maybe they should also change the birds from being silent to suddenly flapping away as if scared by the bullet.

      Would be cool but I think details like that would be too costly on resources considering it's not really that important. It would make the game/servers run worse to calculate it.

      @@rafox66 Ah, okay. It wouldn't be much more, though. All of that is fully built into the engine already, and would only be triggered once every 10 seconds (bird location goes offline/silent) even if spraying bullets.

    Since 1.20 buildings/walls take forever to load in. I play on ps4 unfortunately but instead of corner peeking I can just see other players through walls before they load.

    one thing I'd love to see is a random chance to 'scare the birds' if you're moving around the forest, and almost certain if you shoot or start a car etc. Like not only a sound but real particles flying away from the trees. Imagine you're walking on the field and there is a patch of forest and all of the sudden you hear like birds taking off and see them flying away, you're almost certain that there is someone or something in that forest, what do you do?

    This has nothing to do with ambient sounds but i think its a cool idea that will add a lot to dayz and want to post it somewhere:
    The idea is to be able to make you own sewing kit, potentially using rope and a fishing hook or something along those lines.
    I think that this might make the game easier in terms of maintaining gear. This is a bit of a downside to this idea but I think the upsides outweigh that.
    Upsides (My opinion) :
    - Increases the variety of things that you can do out in the forests without going into towns. As both rope and hooks can be acquired from animals.
    - Allow you to repair clothing while on the move or in the middle of nowhere.
    Downsides (My opinion) :
    - Makes maintaining gear a bit easier (But I do think that rope and hooks aren't common to carry, at least in my experience, so it sort of counters this point)
    Overall I think this would be really cool and support players who have a more secluded hunter playstyle (Like myself), and I think it would benefit everyone, at the cost of a small amount of game difficulty, but it could be balanced (e.g. it only has one or two uses, it can't be used on wounds, or something along these lines, or in other ways)

      This isn't a bad idea but the issue is really the insane durability system in this game. Brand new pair of military gloves get ruined punching 2 zombies out, it's wild in a game that rides itself on realism.

    Like some others have already said it would be better if there were noises for birds flying away like they've been startled out of the tops of trees if a player runs under certain trees but wouldn't happen if you were crouch walking. A bit off topic but I still think it would be great for tracking if bleeding players left a blood trail, it would bring a new dynamic to the play style 👍🏼

    PUBG had a mechanic where birds would fly into the air as a flock when you startle them, essentially letting you track players by looking above fields for where the birds were flying away from. That would be cool in DaYz

    Having grown up in the swamp for a good part of my life, I've always considered crickets, cicadas, birds, and other wildlife sounds as a warning system of predators, including humans. I would love to see DayZ include this in the game. When the crickets stop, be alert.

    The birds and crickets reacting to gunshots is a nice start, though other expansions could be made. I'd like to hear specific distress calls and fly-away sounds (think like the tree across the bridge from Riverwood in Skyrim) that you could hear if other players disturb a bird bubble too much. If they shoot within X meters of the source, other players should hear the bird distress calls from the source much farther away before they go silent.
    Maybe go even further and add trap bushes or trees, full of distinct chirping birds that flee if a player walks too close, alerting other players to their general position. Would make forest chases much more intense.

    Honestly the bird sounds suddenly stopping when gunfire happens has been around for a while. You can hear everything go silent, birds, crickets, everything, right before a gun fire goes off.

    I noticed the trees creaking way louder after the 1.20 update. They kept startling me when I was hiking through the woods in the dark, lol.

    The frequency of the bird sounds at night are ridiculously high when you're sneaking through the woods. I first heard birds reacting to zombies walking in the tree-lines and thought "shit" anytime I'm in the woods at night people are going to be able to kinda zero in on my position. I could see if it were once in a while but its almost constant.

    I liked the crow sounds for camping persons in Vigor. I hated that there is no 1pp for that game. I forsee myself playing Dayz for probably 10 more years, unless Dayz2 drops before. Thank you for the content.

    I like the general idea of this mechanic, but agree it needs some tweaks. Knowing someone fired a shot 500m away 2 seconds before the bullet would even hit you is pretty broken. I like the idea of the "bird bubbles" becoming quiet at the speed of sound as well, that way if someone is shooting at YOU, you get no warning, but if someone is shooting elsewhere, you can get a leg up on them.

    Would be cool if they come up with a mocking bird system where you can make a bird call with your mic, and the birds will mimic it and transmit the mimic across other bird sources up to 500m.
    Would be a cool way to find your buddies without a radio, especially if they need to reply with a different call you agreed on earlier.

    That is seriously remarkable, that you pinpointed that birds go quiet before a bullet making sound reaches their location since it's based on the prerequisite of a gun being fired within a certain range rather than adhering to the laws of logic. When they fix this, it will be that much closer to simulating reality, that's just mind boggling!

      If they fix this.... It's bohemia. They double down on their mistakes, then when they get a load of hassle over it, they tend to just remove. This has already happened with sounds in the dev cycle.

    It would be great :
    - First to add more sound variety (more diverse sounds and longer loops) as some ambient sounds tend to be a bit repetitive. More bird species also. There are plenty in Europe.
    - Too add some distinct alert advertising call from birds when there's something approaching. Eurasian Jays and European green woodpecker make very characteristic sounds when they see danger. Ther'es plenty of copyright free birds sounds online.
    - Without even considering animated bird models right now, you can still add the sound of a flock taking flight in the opposite direction of the danger.
    I believe this type of changes wouldn't be that hard to implement. And be worth it considering the time spent roaming in forests in this game.

    What’s crazy is I noticed that before unsuppressed sniper shots it would go quite for a moment I’d be holding an angle at like nwaf for example and it goes quite I just move instantly and the shot would always come right after I never knew why I just know it works 😂 never noticed for suppressed shots though I probably didn’t notice the game going quite without hearing the shot right after. Interesting stuff

    i left this suggestion a number of months ago in sumraks namalsk discord. I wonder if my suggestion influenced this or maybe they were already working on it :

    Maybe not a namalsk exclusive suggestion but a general one. Personally I think it’d be great if birds had a chance to randomly spawn in trees and could be used to track players. Running past a tree would send the birds up and be a visual indicator for people near or far that someone just ran through that part of the woods or even an animal (counter could be to walk or crouch to avoid this). Also blood trails could be really cool. Basically more tracking techniques would be awesome, especially on bigger maps.

    I really hate the new tree creaking - it's also kind of broken. In a group of trees there will be one tree that the sound is coming from and if you are right under that tree, the sound will become VERY loud and the spatial mastering will be removed so it'll sound just like something coming through the mic system in game. It always freaks me out and makes me think there's a player who went live on mic until I remember it's the changes to the ambient sounds. I hope they tweak this in the next update. I also really hate that they added a three step shuffle into the beginning of the tree top wind noise - so every time the breeze starts I think someone is running up.

    personally, I like this 'bug.' Like, imagine you're just talking to your friend in the forest. You both go quiet as you notice the silence. Suddenly, a rifle shot cracks through the air and all hell breaks loose.

    Sounds one player makes should be heard by others. Sounds should be in groups: like near ambient when player walks , louder when player jogs and loud and disturbed when player runs

    Just an idea… I know it would require some extra coding and I’m not a dev so idk. Maybe birds and crickets could hear gunshots from, oh I don’t know… 25%-50% farther away than you? So if someone fires a weapon, then the birds go silent. It would be a disadvantage to using unsuppressed weapons, but also a player with a suppressed weapon could get a lot closer without being detected.

    I don’t how or what I’d change, but the way it is currently just seems overly complicated / too much. Just go back to the old ambient sound noises, wasn’t anything particularly wrong with the old way

    I'd love to see ambience react to players in a more intelligent way. Like, birds can be startled by a gun shot, and scramble playing a unique sound that can be heard further than the current "bird bubble". Also, I'd ditch the bubbles and cover areas with a large hitbox that pseudo randomly assigns points where sounds can play using something like gaussian blur (I believe it's called) or similar method. That might allow for a simple implementation of what I mentioned before.
    Crickets are fine for sure, but obviously the gunshot thing don't make sense.
    We currently have wildlife that is synced between players (but I believe sounds are not, except maybe death sounds of them), why couldn't we have the same for thunder, and bird sounds?

      This would require implementation of a "bird" actor that can hear sounds just like the player, but could only be tracked server-side and the client only receives information on "bird" when the bird has something to do.

    i OFTEN hear bird sounds getting cut off, but they start RIGHT back up... is this a bug that can happen? it seems like sometimes they get stuck and just keep repeating the very start of their sound but it never fully plays. anyone else heard this?

    If their gonna devote resources to give the ambient sounds logic, they should add in sprites that players can scare off. Players have been wanting better ways to track player movements.

    The only suggestion I have for the devs is to test these changes more thoroughly before implementing them, many of these recent issues seem as though they would have been caught and corrected in advance fairly easily

      I was amazed that 1.20 left experimental so fast with such obvious issues. Bohemia have never been good devs imho. without the modding community, they'd have a tiny player base.

      the problem i see is that not many people play experimental and report the bugs they do find leading to situations like this. and if they do report them they dont provide a way to recreate them leading to the devs just not paying attention to it. we afterall are the play testers for dayz updates

    I suspect this "birds go silent" thing has been there for some time. Maybe to a different extent, but I'm certain it's not a new thing. And quite frankly, it's very hard to use it as you typically need your senses to more important things than to listen to random ambient noises.

    I think bird noises such as fluttering of birds if someone is close by. Alerting players someone is close.

    Hey I may have an idea: multiple stages of kuru building up 1 layer per piece of human flesh consumed, eventually leading to you becoming a wendigo of some form (this is how it happened according to folklaw at the time) essentially you will die but a version of you that will actively hunt down players for food, again just a fun Easter egg, adding nothing of importance to the game though as most of us just blow are brains out after eating one piece of human meat.

      It's good to know how your natural surroundings work.
      Plus sometimes they can be bit annoying when they get in house and wont be quiet.

    Also for lag resistance what if the developers could figure out how to focus the render distance of a player within their immediate 500m and only take focus further when zoomed in because I'm sick of walking into a car or fences that stay invisible for a few seconds before the game realizes there is something in the way

    Probably need to reduce the “silent” radius down to the same as players hear them. Make ambience go quiet depending on sound and movement from all sources (players, vehicles, large animals)

    Actual birds or stuff would be way better than unlimited bird noices.. especially not being able to shoot them and silence them up there. So yeah, Hunt: Showdown like, make them fly away if you're real close to their tree they're on.. normal ambience sounds to make players aware, that there are birds near you and you might trigger them flying away..

    It's difficult to track players across large maps like Chernarus. I'd like to see more sounds traps added without being as extreme as Hunt: Showdown. That being said, crows in trees would be a fantastic addition.

    I think this was misleading (title). Although you did address it about the 3:30 mark, the bird sounds don't appear to give away your position (or help you track a player). I think it would be nice if you could hear birds in the distance, triggered by another player. At least within the yelling voice travel distance away from you.

    When I go hunting what usually happens is the birds go silent for the first few minutes, than resume also if I come to close they flush and fly away giving my approximate position. I really don’t think this reflects reality.

    In the game "The Cycle Frontier" , there is a lot os birds that fly away and make a lot of noise qhen you pass by them!! Something like this could be good in Dayz!
