Ahhh Kate, you do make this time of the year so so special for me. I do have friends who read and I can talk books with, but none of them read classics or Victorian literature (despite my best efforts), so I just so appreciate this time when I can share my Victorian literature love and ooh and ahhh over everyone else’s books. And get very jealous because I want to be reading all of them for myself 😊 xx
Hey, Kate, your collection is so inspiring, I cannot wait to watch the next 2 videos in this series! And not to spend your money for you lol but the 2002 Folio Society editions of Elizabeth Gaskell's novels do contain illustrations. Not the lavish color illustrations found in FS' modern releases, alas, but a very generous number of black pen and ink illustrations. I will be wrapping up Wives and Daughters today and I will miss the Gibsons and Hamleys SO much! BTW that FS edition contains an illustration of Mrs. Goodenough and her crew gathered around a table which might be my favorite one, she looks exactly as I imagined!
I love seeing all of these!! You made me scurry to find a copy of The Heir of Redclyffe. I paid way too much for it ($40) but many of my books I find used for $5 so I splurged for a World Classics in very good condition.
I love all the different editions, I know it looks good on a shelf when they are all the same but I like a bit of character 😉 throughly enjoying Salem’s Chapel, a quiet country story of a priest has turned into a sensation novel!
After hearing you talk about the Heir of Redclyffe quite a while ago, I wondered into a thrift store (don't know which one, but it wasn't a book shop specifically), and found a copy when I wasn't looking for it. Really cheap, too. Definitely $2or less - Cdn 😆. So glad I picked it up when the opportunity arose. Now to read it!
Walter Scott is pre-Victorian (he died in 1832) but he is credited with inventing the historical fiction genre. Was the best-selling writer in Europe during his lifetime.
Ooh, I have the same Everyman's Library edition of The Life of Charlotte Bronte by "Mrs Gaskell" from 1966. It's a bit battered because it's a library discard, but it does have an introduction by writer May Sinclair.
Love this and can’t wait for the others! Thank you for making Victober so special! 🧡 So far I have read The Picture of Dorian Gray with my classics book club (that will be quite the discussion tonight!) and I am about 1/4 of the way through Ruth by Gaskell. Enjoying her writing so much once again
I'm enjoying Victober so much, and I love your Victorian collection! I started Hester today and I love it so far (maybe not the bit where one of the characters is described as an "old woman" aged just 65...) so I was sorry to see in your Try a Chapter video that it didn't work for you. Thank goodness there are so many amazing things out there to choose from! Usually I just read whatever comes in as a reserve at the library, so I don't tend to plan my reading at all, but I'm enjoying making some choices during Victober and seeing them through.
I can’t remember if I mentioned to you, but I stumbled upon Mrs Miles right after I saw your other video about it, I’ve got some things lined up for Victober, so I may hold off and hear what you think of it before I give it a try. Happy reading!
Wow! That is so cool! So the writing is absolutely amazing but it is a bit slow. I'm putting it on the back burner until November when I'll leisurely make .y way through it.
🤗Just want to say how much im enjoying your videos/ interviews etc & thank you for making Victober so special 🤓💖Im really loving Hester (Oliphant is new to me) so it sure wont be my last. Romola gets a bad rap but i loved it (my fave Eliot so far)😉👍😊
Thanks so much! I do work really hard on these but it absolutely always feels worth it seeing the lovely comments from people. I'm so glad you're enjoying Hester! I hope one day it clicks for me.
Great collection! For my first Victober, I am reading Dracula, along with the Re:Dracula podcast and am loving it! I may also try Wuthering Heights if time allows...
Great video - I love to see your books! Who is the publisher for your edition of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, if you don’t mind sharing? It’s gorgeous!
HI Kate, really enjoyed this video! Do you or your followers recommend an edition of Victorian novels worth collecting? I appreciate something with illustrations, notes, any extras that help immerse you in the story. Thank you.
Hi Teresa! Do you have a preference between hardbacks and paperbacks? Because the Barnes and Nobles paperbacks editions are always very floppy and have an introductory essay and notes included. Penguin black classics aren't as floppy but have good foot notes and usually an introduction.
I'm in agreement with you. The exterioros of folio books are pretty, but other than buying it for the story, what do they offer for their exorbitant price? I had Wives and Daughter's on my tbr for victober, but the Trollope book is so big, I don't think I'll get to it.
So interesting to hear about each book, Kate! 🤓📚🩷 So far this Victober, I’m really enjoying the opening chapters of Women in White and actually, Emily Bronte’s poetry. ♥️ I read poetry weirdly, though, just for the sound, lovely words, vs. understanding. 😂 I don’t always totally understand it, but I’m ok with that since I reading it for other reasons. I need to try Aurora Floyd soon! 😍

Thank you, Amanda! I feel the same way. Some reading friends but not many that read Victorian Literature.
I am reading MiddleMarch by George Elliot

Oh, I loved the Curiosity Shop!!!!!!
I could watch you go through your whole library in one sitting. Love this! It's so fun to see all the different editions!
Thank you, Bethany!! It's quite an eclectic group of books.
I love seeing all of these!! You made me scurry to find a copy of The Heir of Redclyffe. I paid way too much for it ($40) but many of my books I find used for $5 so I splurged for a World Classics in very good condition.
I hope I haven't talked up Charlotte Mary Yonge too much 🤣🙈🤞

This is fantastic! And because of you, I read Lady Audley's Secret and loved it!!!
Ahhh! That makes me so excited to hear!

What a great idea, Kate, to show your collection. Loved watching this and can’t wait for the other ones!
Thank you, Leo!
Kate, I wish I could peruse your entire book collection 😍
I really enjoyed the variety of editions you have Kate. Oh and I hope we get the Middlemarch video.
Coming soon!

So glad you're having a great start to Victober!
Thank you for this video, Kate! Really enjoying seeing your collection. Currently reading Far From The Madding Crowd and loving it so much.
So glad you enjoyed it! Far From the Madding Crowd is such a beautiful book!

Oooh! Dracula is just perfect for this time of year.
Can't wait to see more of these!
I tried reading Anthony Trollopes The Warden and DNF'd it; I am loving the group read however. I am also loving Odd Women.
So glad his writing is working for you more in the group read!
Great video - I love to see your books! Who is the publisher for your edition of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, if you don’t mind sharing? It’s gorgeous!
Heron Books and published in 1970. No isbn number otherwise I would share that.

I do think they're supposed to be especially sturdy?
@@katehowereads and they have a case to protect the book lol
