‘’Twas the first night of Victober and all through the house the only creatures stirring are my dog, myself, and a mouse 🥴. Happy Victober, everyone💖📚☕️
I recommend Helen's Babies . An unmarried uncle takes care of his two young (not babies) nephews in their English country home. the children mean well, but need structure and a lot of attention that the uncle doesn't know to provide. So chaos and hilarity . When the uncle tries to court a neighbor lady, the children get involved unknowingly and hilarious misunderstandings happen. This is the book Betsy Ray read while Carnie and Bonnie sewed, knitted, tatted at Carnie's house in Heaven to Betsy. (And we who read the Betsy Tacy books know of Lady Audrey's Secret, lol)
Bravo to all the wonderful booktubers who took part in this unique project. Good job Kate for getting it all together. I love Vanity Fair, Tenant of Wildfell Hall, The Half Sisters, The Ghost Story book already and look forward to reading some other new books, especially Olive. I finished The Mayor of Casterbridge, Janet's Repentance, The Canterville Ghost and other Short Stories, Esther Waters, Carmilla and a few Gothic Tales because, despite getting the shot, I contracted Covid and had 2 weeks in quartine to read in September. Again, great job!
A special hurrah for Under the Greenwood Tree, Vanity Fair, Harrison Ainsworth in general, and The Beetle. And, to be fairer than is my custom, if you're going to read Rider Haggard, that's the one to go for. :-) Thank you everybody.
I love these collaborative videos not just for the books but for all the new booktubers I find. So glad Amanda mentioned Arnold Bennett, I read his short story The Death of Simon Fuge last year and loved it but haven’t heard much about his novels.
What a wonderful video! Thank you so much for putting this together, Kate! There are so many Hardy books on this list that I haven’t even heard of (that I need to get my hands on ASAP).
Happy Victober. My underrated choice is Mrs. Oliphant's "Miss Majoribanks". It was quite a light and comic book. I thought of it as a Victorian version of "Emma". Not sure if one can consider any Dickens novel as underrated but "Dombey and Son" is as compelling as his other more well known novels.
Great fun! Thanks ladies! At first I thought this was going to be Thomas Hardy central - but then we got some other authors in there too LOL! I think I’m going to go out and find Ruth and the doctors wife! Happy vicTober! 💕💕
Well that was a treat to kick off Victober with. There’s a couple of books I’ve never heard of, and some which I’ve had on my radar and feel inspired now to pick up. Happy to see Ruth by Elizabeth Gaskell recommended- I really enjoyed it and think it’s definitely underrated compared with her other novels. Thank you everyone, Happy Victober xx
@@katehowereads thank you for having me. There’s not many events that would coax me out of the comments section to show my face, but Victober is most certainly worth it. It’s such a special month xx
@@amandalavelle2638 Hi, Amanda, just wanted to tell you that your review was great! You should come on screen more. Definitely going to check out The Grand Babylon Hotel. Happy Victober.
@@amandalavelle2638 Hi, Amanda! Thought I’d let you know that I LOVED The Grand Babylon Hotel. Thanks so much for the recommendation. Hope your Victober is going well.
What an absolute treat this video was, and what a great resource for Victober. I am still working my way through most of the popular Victorian titles but I am glad I have this for future reference. The only one I have read (The Tennant of Wildfell Hall) is one of my all time favourite books. I think the one I would add to this list is The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot. Well done also for putting this together :)
This is great and I have so many ideas about books to look for for next victober.. Thanks so much for doing this and including so many great Booktubers 🎉🎉🎉🥰
I’ve been meaning to try Arnold Bennett for a long time now. I have The Old Wives’ Tale and Anna of Five Towns on my shelves. I think they just moved up in my TBR. Thanks to Kate for putting this together and to all the lovely people that contributed. So many wonderful books to get to!
Wow now I have so many more books I want to read! This was a great fun start to Victober and I loved seeing what everyone had to say… many Hardy books, I may have to start Hardy sometime. Anyway, I loved this. Thank you so much for letting me be part of this, Kate! Happy Victober! 🙂🍁📚🎃
I rarely watch videos that are over 15 minutes long right to the end, but I watched all of this in one sitting which goes to show how much I loved it :D Great recommendations ladies!
Thank you for putting this together Kate. I finally got to the end of it as I had to keep stopping and noting things to read in the future. Also how lovely seeing all these booktubers in one video.
I'm a bit late getting started on Victober, but this video is such a great resource! Thank you for all the hard work you've poured into it - such a lovely idea and a celebration of this wonderful reading community
Wow! Thank you for compiling this. My tbr went up about 5 books, I'm dying even more to read those already on my TBR, and I guess I'll be doing Victober all year round now.
This was a great collab video and I definitely got a few more books added to my TBR. Thanks, Kate, for putting this together and allowing me to join it. -Amy
Amazing list 🤩 I now have more than enough Victorian things to read for the next 15 Victobers 🤣 At the Back of the North Wind. Yaaaasss Roz! Great stuff
This is a brilliant start to Victober and I commend you for putting it together - some great titles (a few I have never heard of before) and some great Booktubers (again, some new channels to go and explore). I look forward to eventually getting to some of these, and think I really ought to get Mary Elizabeth Braddon on my shelves.
Also that gorgeous book of scary stories - I can’t remember the title LOL - sounded great. Can anyone explain though why E F Benson is never included in those collections? I believe he wrote tons of ghost stories before he ever wrote Mapp and Lucia. Any comments on that would be welcome. Thanks!
I enjoyed this video so much. I’m always looking for underrated and even long lost Victorian authors and books to read. I have two stacks of very old Victorian books that belonged to my Grandparents and Great Grandparents who were born in the Victorian era (except my Grandma). The books are so old they don’t have ISBN numbers (when did that start?) nor are most on Goodreads. Most in the first stack are small books for Children.
Fantastic video. Thanks, Kate, and all the contributors. It’s great to have so many recommendations … well, maybe not when you’re trying to restrict your TBR 😉. Enjoy Victober, everyone!
I’m reading Ruth this Victober and after listening to the recommendation of it, I’m excited for it even more. 😊 I’m glad for many other recommendations too, thank you!
This was great Kate. Lots of new books and new channels here. A question does Amanda have a channel? Where can I find more of her videos? Thank you for putting this together.
Hi Kate Grania and Under the Greenwood Tree are on my TBR. I'll be adding the following. Olive, Torn Sails, At the Back of the North Wind, The Hand of Ethel Birda and Windsor Castle. My underrated victorian book is Carmila.
@@katehowereads After looking at GR I decided against The Hand of Ethel Birda. Tomes are hard for me to get through but I added Olive, Torn Sails, At the Back of the North Wind Windsor Castle as well as Carmilla to my ever growing TBR
I was inspired by a random comment somewhere on the internet to devote Victober to L.T. Meade. She wrote hundreds of books, and though I've only read about 17 of them, any secret misgivings I may have harbored have been politely but firmly dismissed. I find her much more fun, to read, and her style suits me much better than that of Mrs. Yonge, and the sainted Ms Edgewood. I'd extend Victober over into Victautumn if I didn't live in Victallthemonths.
