I agree with you 100%. At the distances that bad things happen, a dot is pretty much useless. I do most of my training a 3,5, and 7 yards for that reason. Most commonly you need to be able to get a shot or two off at 'bad breath' distance.
Also, every millimeter you add to your gun makes it harder to conceal.

      Thanks, Pard!
What can I say, I'm old school.
I just prefer traditional sights over red dot
      on my handguns. 👍😎
      Thanks for watching.
      Stay safe and healthy.

I see it like that also, close enough and quick for the most part. I want to learn hit center mass from the hip

Red dots are great on carbines, but I prefer traditional sight on my handguns.
As for shooting from the hip...
Practice, practice and practice some more until it becomes second nature.
If it were me, I'd start from ten to fifteen ft.
      Thanks for watching.
      Start safe and healthy.

I put a red dot on my HDX for the sole reason that I disliked how tiny the iron sights were on it when I would practice hitting the various small targets from 25-30 feet or more. Up close, under 15 feet, it's not really needed as I fire at center mass. It's probably silly, but it does help me when I want to target practice with it and it's at longer distances.
On my regular less lethal launchers and my 9mm I just use the iron sights as they're more than enough for quick aiming.

On a rifle/carbine or rifle like self-defense option, a red dot
      makes prefect sense.
Not so much on self-defense handguns in my opinion, unless you're planning on shooting longer distances.
      Again, just my opinion.
      Thanks for watching.

      You could...
That said, if you're not used to using red dots on handguns there is a learning curve. Meaning, you really have to put in the time to get proficient with it.
Personal I'm fast getting on target with my traditional sights when it comes to handguns for self-defense. But hey, give it a try!
You might like it. And if not...
You can always take it off.
      👍😎
