That's cool I have two 2003 hybrids with the electric power steering, I ran both cars well over 300.000 miles Never had a Single problem with this System from either car, both Cars are for parts only now, I guess I should pull both out and save all the necessary parts so others can Swap cars like You guys just did, Great Content this is why I watch you're Content 👍, From Wisconsin.
Great video. I had a bit of trouble figuring out how to open up the fuse box at 4:25. I think I might just use my RSX's (I scrapped the body, kept all suspension parts). Nearly all the fuses are the same as my ES1.
Right but it's a tough engine if you change your oil often enough, Headgasket can be a problem after 200,000 But it's not a big deal to me as long as it wasn't overheated because the heads go bad quickly in high temps, I know because I had a radiator drain get broke off once running 75 mph down the highway after hitting some strange animal in the dark, didn't notice the water temp pegged out causing the head to turn into a Tato Chip 🧐. O and by the way it only had 115.000 miles on it when this happened I installed a good head and it didn't damage any of the cylinders dosen't burn oil even after running it out of coolant like this.
Honestly, one of the cooler things I've seen y'all do, and y'all do a lot of cool Honda stuff. Any chance there's a before & after dyno pull? Curious the power and efficiency gains. Hopefully someday I can chat you up about hondata and a tune for my GD3 😎
I have a 2002 4door and I have been waiting to do the same thing. I h Just have to get my rear in gear and find all the parts. Then I also wanted to do a k-swap. Tons of plans but no time and with little money. 😢
Great Swap!!! Thank u for sharing this!! I have a question, what are the thread size on the old rack. There 2 connecting line ( high pressure and low pressure )
I'm converting a 7th gen (2001 Civic EX) to electric (Tesla SDU) and would like to use one of these EPS racks. Can anyone elaborate a little on the RPM signal being emitted by the ECU? Since I will no longer have the ECU, I'll need to find another way to reproduce this signal. I'm thinking I might be able to use the wheel speed sensors, or RPM of the electric motor, and if needed, an Arduino, to reproduce the signal. So I think I would need to know the voltage (5V/12V?), if it's just a pulse on each rotation of the crankshaft, or a PWM signal, or some other format? Not sure what else. If anyone has any tips I would greatly appreciate it!
No, the R18 is a totally different engine. The D17 is based on the D16 from the older Civics, but unlike the rest of the D series, very few of its parts are interchangeable with anything else.
Do you also replace the factory steering slider when you do this swap? I’ve read how those are fragile from the factory on the steering rack where the tie rods meet in the center of the rack, but in both RSXs I’ve had, they were fine. Curious if you recommend this upgrade?
Not with the 7th gen rack, it's a totally different setup. As far as I know, the only way to convert a 6th gen or older to EPS is with an electric power steering pump, which defeats the purpose of converting in the first place.
@@haqitman You may be better off either deleting the power steering or getting a manual rack. I have no experience with the manual racks, but the 6th gens aren't that hard to steer with the stock rack and power steering deleted. I'm a smaller guy and I have no problem driving my EJ6 with the power steering pump belt removed. The 7th gens are a bit harder to drive without power steering, but still IMO manageable unless you are doing a lot of parallel parking or something.
@@averyalexander2303 I've run w/o the PS belt, effort is about like a manual rack but response is sluggish. To go manual correctly you need a manual front sub frame since the man rack is a smaller diameter, kind of a big job. I may go this route but I'm getting older and having ps is nice. A drop-in elec rack with like 12:1 ratio would be sweet but I've not found such a solution. Appreciate the feedback!
@LHT Performance I guess I'm referring to the power steering pressure sensor pigtail. It no longer will have anything to plug into so I was wondering what changes you made in regards to that.

No one hardly ever tries to upgrade the EM2. The 1.7 is like a step child...
The plan is to eventually loose the 1.7 and swap in a K20 with 6 speed

Thanks guys. I did this to an 03 coupe. Had to get creative running the wires but it all worked out.
Do you only need to tap the vss wire, the rpm and the key on power wire into the ECU for the control module to work?
What route did you take to get it in
The passenger side
@@cadenyacavone960hey did you end up doing the swap does the eps engage when at a stop
replace rubber slider to a nylon slider in the rack where the steering arms connect to the rack

Same at idle I have like no assistance and.
Could this work on a gen 2 crv? It’s literally a civic suv
Will a 5 speed manual 02-04 CRV engine harness work for George’s swap?
It will!
How’s the overall drive experience from PS to EPS? I have heard that fuel average also increases with EPS.
Guys, sweet swap. Now Gran can drive you to church ;)
is it the same wire color for a 7th k swap??
#LHTPERFECTION
Does anyone have the electronic circuit diagram for the control unit?
My ep3 civic feels stiff with the electric power steering, when you rev it gets lighter to steer, is there a permanent fix for this?
It doesn’t sound right. Either wiring is wrong or the control box is bad.
Would love to have this done on my 8th gen R18.
Not familiar with this year model. Is this engine similar to the R18 in the regular Civic 8th gen?

Definitely do it the oem one is plastic the billet one makes a big difference
Yeah u should replace them..i have replaced it with delrin its like POM
Would this work on 4/5/6th gen civics? Maybe you could make the brackets and sell a kit 😀

Is there no option for the 88-91 CRX ?
Yea. The 90-91 Civic ex PS conversion. Not electric though.
I believe some people have used an MR2 electric PS *PUMP* but it's still hydraulic. It just runs off of electricity instead of a belt.
284k original head gasket?? dang!
I have an EM2 ex with 295k miles and a 4 LX with 230k miles.
D17 will last if you take care of them.
Wish this would work om my 05 crv
It might if the rack is mounted in the same fashion as the ep3/rsx/em2
Swap has been done on an Element should be similar to the CR-V
The 02-06 CR-V is built on the same platform as the 7th gen Civic and the RSX. I would not be surprised if it bolted right in.
Does doing this swap trigger a check engine light?
Not if installed correctly
