"Sag mir wo die Blumen sind". Tell me where the flowers are. A beautiful song which was first song by Marlene Dietrich in 1962. It is an anti-war song. The song is also performed in the beautiful television series “Weissensee”. This video provides translation of the lyrics to English.
This version of the song has been song by Katrin Sass. Please check her channel for some really very beautiful German songs. Most of the songs she sings on her channel were old resistance songs that East Germans used to sing during the “occupation” by the East German Socialist Republic in their fight for freedom. The television series “Weissensee” is a beautiful television series from Germany
The story is set in Eastern Germany between 1980 (first series) until middle of 1990 (half a year after the fall of the Wall which had separated East and West Germany for many years).
The series gives a very good description of how life was in Eastern Germany in the 1980s and how the STASI was operating.
The story is about the Kupfer family, where both the father and the oldest have high positions within the STASI. The father tries to uphold moral standards while doing his job, but the oldest son is completely brainwashed by the East German system and is extreme in his actions while working for the STASI.
His younger brother Martin on the other hand, does not want to have anything to do with the STASI and chooses for a simple life. And he falls in love with a beautiful girl Julia and she gets pregnant.
However, the STASI (especially the older brother of Martin) do everything to make the life of both Julia, her mother, and Martin extremely difficult. I will not disclose the rest of the story.
